Infamous Reign by Steve McHugh

Infamous Reign: A Hellequin Novella by Steve McHughSteve McHugh flashes back to the tumultuous time of King Richard III’s reign in England, giving us a hint of Nate Garrett’s past as the Hellequin, the ruthless arm of Merlin on behalf of the Kingdom of Avalon. Nate is furious that the two princes that he trusted King Richard to guard have been kidnapped, and he wants answers. His quest, joined by his old friend Thomas (a werewolf), leads him on the trail of a conspiracy to start a war between England and France, and into a confrontation with a hated antagonist. Throw in some encounters with creatures of varied legends, and you have a very fun, fast-paced novella.

This book was so good, with excellent pacing, that it does not feel like a short novella. The story is packed with action and thrilling moments, and plenty of exciting magical elements. I loved how McHugh even threw in a hair-raising creature of Japanese legend, not to mention some sea elementals that will certainly inspire awe in the reader.

Infamous Reign would make a great introduction to the Hellequin series. There is enough backstory to see where Nate came from and where he is going, who he is as a character, and why he deserves his own following in the urban fantasy genre. Nate is a hero that can carry a fantasy novel with no problem, be it short or long, urban or historical fantasy. Bring on more Hellequin adventures, Steve McHugh.

About Danielle

Danielle is a stone-cold addict. Of books, that is. She loves to read. Her book collection is in the thousands. Several years ago, she read Night Pleasures by Sherrilyn Kenyon and became a die-hard paranormal fan. The same thing happened with urban fantasy/occult detective stories when she read Guilty Pleasures by Laurell K. Hamilton. Danielle grew up on fairy tales and mythology, so reading excellent urban fantasy which draws from the ancient myths and legends is a joy for her. Her heart goes pitter patter when she hears of an urban fantasy based on some obscure folk legend that most people never heard of. In her real life, she works in the veterinary field, and aspires to one day be a published author. She’s not married and doesn’t have kids, unless you count two spoiled cats. She lives in Texas.
