Fractured Time by Alan Draven

Donovan Vicar had a special talent – he was able to “feel” the vibrations of the people around him, telling him if they were good people or if they were surrounded by an aura of evil. Walking home through the park, Donovan encountered a man who had waves of evil emanating from his body, and the aura was enough to make Donovan feel ill. Discussing the event with his spiritual mentor, Mason, helped Donovan decide to seek out the man. Leaving his younger sister in Mason’s care, Donovan headed to the bus station to catch the next bus to Dallas.

Falling asleep at the station, Donovan was a bit embarrassed, and hurriedly entered the bus when the city was called. He noticed the driver was dressed in an old-fashioned uniform, and that except for Donovan and the driver, the bus was empty, but he fell back asleep, only to awaken in the same small town, Bitternest, Louisiana…but fifty years earlier, when the town was in an uproar over missing girls and strange occurrences.

Being a huge fan of time travel, I had high hopes for this story, and I enjoyed Donovan’s determination to find the man he encountered in the park and his strength of character in caring for his younger, disabled sister. Unfortunately, I felt the book was much too long, with excessive details that weighed down the middle, and I became confused about which chapter was happening in which era. It took until I was more than halfway through the book, when Donovan met the police officers, to discover that the story had not been switching back and forth.

The premise of the missing girls was interesting, as was the idea behind the secretive Order, and I appreciated the fact that one of the characters common to both time frames was a bookstore owner, but thought that the idea of the Order resurfacing every fifty years to wreak havoc was a bit typical.

About Mary

My name is Mary, and I’m a serious book junkie, with a large personal collection of reading material. I’m fascinated by ghosts, the paranormal, and true crime stories. I love discovering the possibilities in the next world and am curious about the reasons people do what they do in this one. I’ve been reading since the age of 3, and always have a book or two or three going. I’m an elementary school substitute teacher, and I always have a book or two in my “bag of tricks”. My new favorite is “Frog in a Bog”. My husband and daughter do not share my passion for books, and secretly think I’ve gone over the top with my collecting and reading habits, but I firmly believe there are worse habits I could have!
