Flesh eating aliens, domestic violence, alcoholism, suicide – if you feel ill already, don’t read on. This book is filled with ick inducing moments.
The Kryszka live beneath the city, surfacing only to gather live meat, Humans, which they keep alive to feed off. The police find strange blood at the abduction scenes and everyone suspects aliens.
Harry is battling booze, his brother hits his wife until she is almost dead, and their sister, Becky, finds out from their dying mother that she is half alien. She wants to find out more about her real father: could he be one of the aliens terrorizing the city? Harry helps her, but then the family is targeted by the Kryszka for knowing too much. To survive, they will have to face their own personal demons.
The alien theory is accepted with barely a blink by the authorities, which I found hard to believe. The characters were believable as people but also unlikable. I struggled to connect with any of them, which is a shame as I never felt truly scared. Grossed out, yes; there were many times I wished I hadn’t eaten before reading The Dark Side of the Moon.
