Author Erin Kellison Release Party and $50.00 Amazon Gift Card

Posted under Contests,Release Parties by Site Hostess on Tuesday 26 March 2013 at 11:54 am

Shadow Hunt (Shadow Touch) by Erin KellisonThank you to Bitten By Books for hosting the release party for my novella, Shadow Hunt! I am thrilled to be here today!

My Shadow Touch novella series is a dark play on Peter Pan. What if your Shadow could separate from your body? What kinds of things would it do? Would it have a conscience? How would you control it?

Ellie Russo thinks that she has finally managed to control her shadow self, and in doing so, becomes near invincible. Her shadow is immaterial, and so cannot be killed. Which is why she’s not afraid of the Martin clan—a family with war magic in their blood. She’s investigating a murder, and all signs point to Martin. She doesn’t anticipate that one of the Martins can control her shadow even better than she can. Ellie’s dark side is enslaved.

Ellie’s partner, Dr. Cameron Kalamos, has been waiting for the perfect time to propose to Ellie. He wants her, shadow and all. There’s no other woman that can possibly fascinate him like she does. But when Ellie is toyed with, at the mercy of the Martins, Cameron reaches into the darkness within himself. His shadow might not be separate from his body, but it’s just as passionate, vengeful, and violent—maybe more so.

My questions for readers today are on the Rafflecopter widget. You just need to do the first two things on the widget to unlock the rest of the entries and to see my questions!

Author Bio:
Erin Kellison is the author of the dark fantasy romance Shadow, Shadow Touch, and Shadow Kissed series. Stories have always been a central part of Erin’s life. She attempted her first book in sixth grade, a dark fantasy adventure, and she still has those early hand-written chapters. She graduated summa cum laude with a degree in English Language and Literature and went on for a masters in Cultural Anthropology, focusing on oral storytelling. When she had children, nothing scared her anymore, so her focus shifted to writing fiction.

Shadow Hunt (Shadow Touch) by Erin KellisonDr. Cam Kalamos and Ellie Russo are back in the exciting third installment of Erin Kellison’s Shadow Touch series. Shadow Hunt begins with tragedy striking the Segue Institute. Cam and Ellie now have to enter the lions den, the most powerful of the Mage Houses, to find the mage responsible and exact retribution.

The stakes are high as Cam is becoming more influenced by the Shadow, and Ellie still cannot accept that he loves and trusts her, despite her shadow self. Not only do the two have to contend with their growing issues, but also with the mages that look at humanity as nothing more than fodder. Will Cam and Ellie be able to succeed in their mission and find some peace with each other, or will the mages use their dark powers to end their blossoming love story?

Kellison has outdone herself in Shadow Hunt. Cam and Ellie continue to be an intoxicating match that light the pages on fire with passion. The consequence of being associated with the Segue are significantly higher here and set the tone for a darker story than the previous two installments which works on every level.

I adore everything about this offshoot series–it is fast paced, enthralling, and the two main characters are addictive. This does work as a standalone novella, but I do not think you should deprive yourself of the awesomeness that is the entire Shadow Touch series.

Ellie Russo and her seductive shadow are back in Shadow Play by Erin Kellison. This time, instead of trying to control her shadow, Ellie enlists its help. While Ellie can’t understand a word of the fae language, her shadow can communicate with the fae who sent a young boy into Twilight, giving the family and Segue, Ellie’s employer, hope they can rescue the boy before Twilight takes his mind.

Twilight isn’t the only problem Ellie must face. Her feelings for Cam are growing, but her self-doubt and years of being alone keep her from sharing them. Her shadow doesn’t have such qualms, adding to Ellie’s discomfort and distracting her from her search for the boy. She must stay focused if they hope to reach him in time, but how can she when she’s competing with herself for the man she loves?

Shadow Play is an introduction into the mage world seen in Fire Kissed. It’s the perfect precursor to the new direction Erin’s taking in the world of angels and fae, death and magic. Cam and Ellie finally get out of their own way and make a play for their relationship. The last scene in the novella had me grinning like an idiot…right before the blushing began. There’s something about being able to split into two beings that makes a sex scene truly steam.

Fire Kissed by Erin Kellison

Posted under Reviews by Jackie on Wednesday 11 July 2012 at 2:48 pm
*****

Fire Kissed is the first in a new series by Erin Kellison. The world of the Shadow series extends to this one, with the addition of some new supernatural entities that make wraiths look like puppy dogs.

Kaye Brand is our scarred heroine. Literally. At the age of fifteen, she was sold to another House by her father. Not being too keen on becoming property, Kaye refused her husband-to-be and set the course for a seismic upheaval in the status quo. Think of it this way – each House, or family, of mages and their staff have a particular power. The Brands summon Shadowfire. The Mayas work with illusion. The Greys, to which Kaye is being sold, are said to work with iron. By saying no to her husband, Kaye set her house against his. The Brand house gets burned to the ground, Kaye’s face scarred by a wraith, and her father assumed dead, all because of one, tiny, two-letter word — no.

Kaye’s adult life is built on that tiny word. She set off on her own and sells her ability to summon Shadowfire to those rich enough to pay her price. She’s the perfect pawn to use as a gateway into the mage houses, and the angelic Order uses her as such. They send Jack Bastian, a jaded angel who reminds me so very much of Cary Grant, to convince her to infiltrate the world of the mages and hopefully stop the war between light and Shadow that all sides see coming. Romance blossoms, evil-doers plot, and the fae watch from the darkened corners, waiting to pick up the pieces of the defeated.

I loved the similarities – whether they be on purpose or accidental – to Notorious. No, I’m not talking about the movie about the rapper; I’m talking about the Hitchcock movie starring Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant. In it, Bergman’s German character is approached by Grant to spy on her former lover for the American government, much like Jack approached Kaye to spy on her own people. Jealousy is inevitable, and it morphs into negative feelings and assumptions of a return to the woman’s old, “loose” way of life. I loved it! There was even a reference to laying off the booze, just like in Notorious. It was like reading a paranormal version of one of my favorite movies. Again, this may have been purely accidental, but it added a new layer of enjoyment to the story.

For readers who aren’t giant movie nerds: I’ve adored every novel Erin Kellison has written. I devoured her Shadow series, became enamored with the Shadow Touch novellas, and couldn’t wait to return this world with the new Shadow Kissed series. Enough description about the world is given to entice, but not confuse, new readers without becoming repetitive. The characters are strong-willed, but not bullies, and they tactfully avoid those “Too Stupid To Live” moments we often see in the genre. My favorite part, though, was the chemistry between Jack and Kaye. There were several times when a convenient misunderstanding would have turned this into An Affair to Remember, but the bond between these two characters was so strong that they refused to be separated even when it seemed as though their love was doomed. How can you not love a story with magic, violence, and a little light to guide you through the Shadows?

Fire Kissed (Shadow Kissed) by Erin Kellison

PLEASE NOTE: This contest is closed and the winners have been chosen and notified.

Thank you to Bitten By Books for having me here to celebrate the release of Fire Kissed, book one in my new Shadow Kissed series. BBB has hosted my release party for every book, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. In keeping with the FIRE theme, I’m giving away a Kindle Fire today (or for international readers, the $200 value in the form of a gift card). AND I’m also giving away five copies of Fire Kissed as well.

Let’s talk heroes. In Fire Kissed, Jack Bastian is an angel who hires firemage Kaye Brand to do a dangerous job. He is her handler and her body guard on a mission from Hell. He is stoic, loyal, dedicated, and all about the job. And deep down inside, he’s tormented by the unending stretch of time and the seeming futility of his work. He a man on the edge of darkness… and he falls… hard… into fire.

My heroes have always been dark, and Jack, though an angel, is no exception. My task with each book, and particularly him, is to make sure that the hero’s essential character traits are challenged, yet ultimately help him overcome incredible odds. In the end (no big spoiler), Jack is… still stoic, loyal, and dedicated… though perhaps each trait has been reassigned to someone else or someone else’s cause (psst… Kaye’s) that he didn’t expect. And that edge of darkness? Well, maybe he learns to revel a little.

BTW, excerpts and cool stuff are over at my website: www.erinkellison.com

Shadow Play by Erin KellisonThank you to Bitten By Books for having me here to celebrate the release of my novella, Shadow Play! It’s the second in the series, but it stands alone as well. Stick around, comment, and be entered to win a $100 gift certificate.

When I was a little kid, I was afraid of the dark. (Okay, I’m still afraid of the dark.) Anyway, I’ve got this memory from when I was four years old. I know I was four because I shared my room with my big sister—we’ll get to her in a sec. I used to lie in bed, staring in terror at the shadows. I swear I could see people in the dark and they were talking to each other. I was petrified that they would notice me and… get me. I’d breathe shallowly, barely blinking, until I was too exhausted to stay awake. Well, one night, I got up my courage to tiptoe over to my sister’s bed to tell her I was scared. She would not wake. I poked her, shook her, wiggled the glasses that were still on her face… and then I bit her finger. She yelled, lights came on. I don’t know if I got in trouble, but I do know that I continued to watch shadows for the rest of my life. I am an expert. I should be awarded an honorary phD for my intense research and nightly fieldwork.

I got stuck on the idea that shadow could walk around by itself. I wondered what a person’s shadow would be like, what would motivate it, what would it be capable of? Fast forward a few decades and you have Eleanor Russo, whose shadow—you guessed it—can walk around independently of her flesh and blood body. Her boyfriend, Dr. Cam Kalamos, is crazy about them both, but things get a little dicey when the team is called upon to investigate the disappearance of a child. Excerpts and cool stuff are over at my website: www.erinkellison.com AND I’ll be back here in July to celebrate the release of my next book, Fire Kissed.

My questions for you today are:
Have you ever been afraid of the dark? If so, what’s scary about it to you? Which scares you more: the explainable things in the dark, or the supernatural?

Shadowman

PLEASE NOTE: The contest portion for the Erin Kellison contest is now closed the winner will be drawn at a later date and contacted via email.

First of all, thank you to Bitten By Books for hosting the virtual release party for Shadowman, out today. And thanks also to everyone for stopping by and celebrating with me!

In my Shadow series, Shadow (capital S) is magic. It comes from a place called Twilight, a realm of imagination and nightmare, where all the stories, legends, and myths are true. Shadowman’s solemn duty for all time is to escort souls from our world, across Twilight, to the Hereafter. But he cannot enter the Hereafter himself, nor can he experience the mortal world.

From his vantage on the dark side of the veil, he is drawn to and watches over one soul in particular, Kathleen O’Brien. Though her time to pass draws near, her soul burns ever bright. She knows Death is waiting for her, that he is always close, and so one day, she invites him to come out of his Shadows and speak with her. (This scene is excerpted on my website: http://erinkellison.com/books/shadowBound.html)

Shadowman has vast power, but he is still at the mercy of humankind. His appearance takes the form of how the human who is looking at him conceives Death. If they think Death is a monster, Shadowman appears as a monster. If they consider Death a friend, he’s a friend. Kathleen looks upon Death as a lover, and for her, only her, will he breach the veil and trespass into the world when he has no call to do so. Their story began in Shadow Bound, and now continues in Shadowman.

With that one act, Shadow courses back into the world, bringing with it monsters of legend as well as magic and inspiration. The world is at the brink of a second Dark Age or a modern Renaissance. Time will tell which aspect of Shadow will prevail.

My question for readers is this: How would you feel if magic suddenly infiltrated the world? Would you be scared or excited? How do you think our world would change? Would it be a positive or negative change?

He could not pinpoint the moment he fell – perhaps when he first stepped out of Shadow. Or in that breath drawn to shape the sound of his first word, hush. Or years before when he came to watch her from his dim vantage when he had no call to do so. (Excerpt from Shadow Bound)

Shadowman. The fae Dark Lord. Death. He’s been known by many names to many people, appearing in whatever image the person who sees him forms of him. Cloven hooves, monstrous size, a billowing black cloak – he’s worn all these images. But none affected him beyond the surface — none save one. The woman who tempted him to cross through to our world saw him as a dark knight. Handsome and kind, always there, always watching until finally giving in to the allure of Kathleen’s bright soul.

“Can you show me how to go? I don’t know…”
He grinned. “I don’t know either.” (Excerpt from Shadow Bound)

Fast forward two books. Technically, it is two and a half books, but we would then quibble about the extraordinary length of time I had to wait to finish Shadowman’s story. Erin Kellison first introduced him in Shadow Bound, the first book in her Shadow series. He made appearances here and there throughout the first novel, then again in its sequel, Shadow Fall, but it was usually to save his daughter or kill things. I respect his ability to wield a nasty blade, but it didn’t help me find out if he and Kathleen ever found each other again! No, that little bit of information didn’t arrive until Shadowman, the happy-dance inspiring third novel in the series.

Layla Mathews, a woman who is the polar opposite of Kathleen O’Brien, is introduced as our heroine. Before you form a lynch mob, understand she is also Kathleen reincarnated. This informayion isn’t a spoiler. It’s revealed very early on, is on the bookmarks for Shadowman, and should be horribly obvious because Erin would not try to put our Shadowman with anyone else! To say there are obstacles to her and Shadowman being together would be a huge understatement. He’s fae. She’s human. There are wraiths and worse around and Moira, also known as Fate, has her hand in the cookie jar, so to speak.

There are so many obstacles, in fact, that the book seems almost too jam-packed with plot. I would have liked to see a little more growth from Layla instead of an almost instant change. Her character is so complex and troubled I wanted to watch the healing process. This in no way diminishes my enjoyment of Shadowman. Even with my one tiny complaint, I highly recommend it to all fans of storybook romance, urban fantasy, and angels with attitude. Erin Kellison has an amazing ability to thread beauty into the most dark of passages, eliciting true, heartfelt emotion through the turn of a phrase. I leave you with just such an example:

Now time was a torture of uneven beats strung together and stretched into a warp of perception.

Ellie Russo is afraid of her shadow. I would be, too, if my shadow liked to run around naked in order to garner attention. You see, Ellie’s shadow has a mind, and incorporeal body, all her own. She’s the dark half, the one ruled by impulses and desires, two things Ellie’s never been able to indulge in, let alone be ruled by.

At her wit’s end, Ellie contacts scientist Cam Kalamos and pleads for his help. He’s a scientist at Segue, and researching Shadow is what he does best. Unfortunately for Ellie, Cam’s Shadow and hers are nothing alike, and if Ellie can’t learn to control her dark self, the big bad beings behind Segue will do the controlling for her.

Shadow Touch by Erin Kellison is a novella in her astounding Shadows series. It isn’t as much of a romance as the other books, focusing more on the phenomena of Ellie’s shadow acting as a separate self and introducing two characters I have a feeling we’ll see more of when the highly anticipated Shadowman releases in September. That isn’t to say romance is non-existent in Shadow Touch – Ellie and Cam have an instant connection and Ellie’s shadow self has a definite affinity for the scientist – it just isn’t the main focus.

I love the different directions Erin takes her characters and mythology. The effect the picture of the Shadowlands had on both sides of Ellie, and the promises of the things said after, have me on the edge of my seat for Shadowman. If you’re looking for a quick read to whet your appetite that is full of fantasy, mystery, and the dark part of ourselves, I highly recommend picking up Shadow Touch.

Erin Kellison Release Party & $100.00 Amazon Gift Card Contest

Posted under Contests,Release Parties by Site Hostess on Wednesday 1 June 2011 at 1:48 am

Shadow Touch by Erin KellisonFirst of all, a big thank you to Bitten by Books for hosting my release party for my e-novella, Shadow Touch. Today I’m giving away a $100 gift card to either Amazon or B&N (winner’s choice), signed copies of Shadow Bound, Shadow Fall, AND an ARC of my upcoming release, Shadowman (out Sept 6). And to an additional five winners, I’ll give signed copies of Shadow Bound and Shadow Fall. Yeah!

Shadow Touch (Kensington Zebra) is a stand-alone story set in my Shadow series world. Its heroine is Ellie Russo, who has a big problem—her shadow. It ought to be attached to her; instead it has a life of its own. And her dark mirror image is a wild thing, acting only on instinct, passion, and whims.

Ellie journeys to the Segue Institute, a paranormal research center, to ask for help. Her shadow is getting stronger, even dangerous. Something needs to be done, and soon. Maybe it’s already too late.

Dr. Cameron Kalamos has devoted himself to the study of Shadow, but nothing could prepare him for the mischief and mayhem of a soul split in two. He admires brave and enduring Ellie, just as he fights his attraction to her primal shadow.

Who will give in first: the man struggling to unite two halves of one fascinating female; the shadow fighting for freedom to experience the thrill of every emotion; or the woman who is about to discover her own deepest desires?

So here are my questions for you:

What are your favorite heroes or heroines that struggle with a dark side of their own? How do you feel
that aspect adds/detracts from them as a character or from the story as a whole?

Shadow Touch is available online June 1 (that’s today!):

Tremendous thanks to Bitten by Books for hosting the virtual release of Shadow Fall. And thanks also to everyone for stopping by and celebrating with me!

Custo Santovari just wouldn’t die. He’s the hero of Shadow Fall, the second in my Shadow series. I tried to cut him from Shadow Bound, the first book, tried to delete him more than once, but he was so vivid in my imagination that I finally gave in. Fine. Live. See if I care. I had no idea how important he would be. In Shadow Bound, some very bad stuff happens to Custo, which I won’t spoil here. Suffice to say, he is the ultimate loyal friend. If ever there was a man to have by your side, it’s him. Custo will do what needs to be done, his soul be damned. He’ll do the dirty work, and he’ll sacrifice himself before he’ll allow anyone he cares about to get hurt. In Shadow Fall, his own book, I torture him some more. He’s sorely tempted, and he succumbs more often than not. But no matter what, he’s there to fight the big fight.

Have no doubt, Custo is a hero, but he might just be headed for Hell. Or is he?

My question for readers is this: What qualities make a hero? And does a dark side count for or against him?

Shadow Bound by Erin Kellison

Life is finally going well for Talia O’Brien. She has a doctorate, the prospect of a good job, and a chance at a normal future. The appearance of two strangers changes everything. The monster inside her escapes, both saving her life and damning it.

He is the Shadowman, a lord of the fae and dealer of death. One transgression, made decades ago, sealed both his fate and Talia’s. But they aren’t alone in the battle against the monsters. Adam Thorne has dedicated the past few years of his life to investigating the wraiths, the beings who attacked Talia and sent her into hiding. He uses is own brother as a guinea pig, testing how fast they regenerate, how long they can go without food. It may sound inhumane, but it’s necessary to stop an apparently unstoppable being.

Adam’s research into the wraith phenomena brings him to Talia’s doorstep. He needs the Shadowman to win this war, and she’s his only link.

Shadow Bound by Erin Kellison is the perfect mix of urban fantasy action and fairy tale drama. Erin has a lyrical way with words that keeps your focus and ensnares you in the story. The beginning scene with Shadowman and Kathleen had me hooked. The raw pain and passion of the characters and Shadowman’s certainty of doom played out vividly in my mind.

The romance between Adam and Talia almost had me in tears numerous times. There were so many things stacked against them, I honestly wasn’t sure if they’d receive a happily ever after. Most fairy tales—the real ones, not the Disney ones—don’t have a happy ending, so I was prepared for anything. I’m not going to tell you what happened at the end, but I will tell you this—no matter what you’re expecting, it won’t be this!

Custo Santovari is no angel. He’s done things to protect his best friend, Adam, he should be ashamed of. But he isn’t. His only regret is the inability to warn Adam of the traitor in his midst. It’s kind of hard to communicate with the living when you’re stuck behind a set of pearly gates, waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Landing the lead role in Giselle is a dream come true for Annabella. She has to stay focused, keep her movements fluid and ethereal, like the ghost she is portraying. Lost in the dance, Annabella begins to hallucinate. She sees a predator stalking her in a dark forest, eyes intent on her and her alone. In her head, Annabella knows her visions can’t be real, but her heart isn’t convinced. The appearance of a strange man solidifies her fears, and the fierce attraction she feels for him can only spell trouble. Unfortunately, Custo wasn’t the only thing to escape the shadows. Wolf, the Hunter, has Bella’s scent, and he won’t stop until he possesses her body and soul.

Shadow Fall by Erin Kellison is the second book in her dark and sexy Shadow series about a world of shadow and blood, magic and love. Custo and Bella are an unlikely pair – a fallen angel and a ballerina – but the tension between them steamed up my computer screen. I hoped Custo would be back after his sacrifice in Shadow Bound, and was super-excited to find out he was the hero in his own book.

There’s something about a man with a troubled past and a heart of gold that gives me the warm fuzzies. Custo may have thought himself unworthy, but anyone with eyes could see he was a good man. Even though I love him to pieces, someone else captured my heart early on. It says something about my mental stability that I was crushing on the villain. He wasn’t sexy or misunderstood, he just was. Wolf was made of shadow, belonging to another race, another mindset. I don’t approve of his methods, but I approve of him. I know. Weird. But it can’t be helped! His fate at the end, in particular, intrigues me. I can’t wait to see what the repercussions will be.

Author Erin Kellison Release Party and Contest

Posted under Contests by Site Hostess on Thursday 8 July 2010 at 11:41 am

PLEASE NOTE: The contest portion of the Erin Kellison event is now closed. The winners will be chosen at a later date and notified via email.

A huge thank you to Bitten By Books for hosting the virtual launch to my debut release,  Shadow Bound. And thank you to everyone for stopping by and celebrating with me.

For my Shadow series, I had a lot of fun playing around with the concept of mortality. My heroine is a banshee, the herald of Death, so she is very much on the divide between this world (Earth/mortality) and the Between world of the fae. My baddies are wraiths, and they were derived from this play on words: If the most selfless act is to give up your life, then the most selfish act would be to give up your… death. My demon, the Death Collector, would gladly take it from you. The wraiths are basically a new take on the age-old quest for the fountain of youth. My series suggests that there is tremendous power in death.

Immortality is a well-traveled topic in fiction, and very common in paranormals and urban fantasy. Take vampires (favorites of mine). What are they really but a compelling combination of enduring youth and living death? Something about that dichotomy to me is very sexy. Others must think so too.

So my question for readers today is this: If you had the choice to live forever (and not become one of my monster wraiths), would you? Under what circumstances (youth, wealth, power, keep your soul) would you agree to this transformation? Would you require an out? Like sunlight or a stake to the heart, or in the case of my series, a swift strike from the Reaper’s scythe?
