The Song Of Calypso by Dahlia Rose

*****

Calypso music is well known on the Island of Barbados. Legend states that it was named after the Calypso Goddess of Barbados. It is a song of joy and happiness. Close your eyes and listen to the rhythmic beat. You can almost feel the warm breeze blowing through your hair, the scent of salt water and tropical flowers teasing your olfactory senses.

Eve’s dreams always started with these olfactory illusions. She could feel herself dancing and swaying to the music, the happiness and love flowing through her body. It was so magical until she encounters the same ghost every night. She would always awaken shaking and scared. Why was this image haunting her night after night? Eve quickly learns that she is in danger after a kidnapping attempt. Surprisingly, she also discovers that she is destined to take the reins from the Calypso Goddess. The same goddess who has cursed the island of Barbados. The goddess is her Great-Great Grandmother. Legend has it she was in love with a treasure-burying pirate named Samuel Lord Castle. They were very much in love and had a daughter together. One night, Samuel betrayed them by using his new daughter’s blood to magically encrypt a map to his buried treasure. Calypso was so distraught she took her daughter and jumped off a cliff into the sea. Samuel was left cursed and suffering until he died, the treasure still untouched. Many have tried to find the map, but no one was ever successful. However, Damian finally had the encrypted map in his hands. All he needed was the living blood-line of the Calypso Goddess.

Eve Shayne lives in New York. She is your average young adult who works as a counter girl in Macy’s. She lives a fairly quiet life. Her dreams become more realistic each day. Each night, she feels the dreams summoning her to Barbados. She has always wanted to visit the island and learn about her heritage. In a turn of events, she finds herself flying to Barbados much sooner than planned.

Caleb McPherson willingly accepts an assignment from the Triad to protect Eve Shayne. He has never believed in the Triad’s mission and obsession of the Mythical Calypso Goddess. The only reason he offers is so that she can lead him to his father’s killer. His father was killed trying to protect the map from falling into the hands of Damian Bancroft.

Damian Bancroft is a money hungry savage. He will not let anything get in his way to finding Samuel Lord Castle’s treasure. He is on a blood thirsty mission to find the blood daughter of Calypso. He will kill anyone that stands in his way!

Dahlia Rose’s The Song Of Calypso is an adventure novel. She creates mystery, love, and fantasy in her storyline. A short novel that never disappoints and leaves you wanting more.

Hiram’s Secret by Anastasia Rabiyah

Hiram wants to leave Pig’s End and pass through the portal to another realm. He’s bored of his current life and he is curious of what the other side can offer. When he is sent to jail in the other realm, he never thought he would meet Secret, a beautiful and mysterious woman. Is the woman really what she seems to be?

To think that a gremlin is merely an ugly and vile creature is totally overrated. Anastasia Rabiyah brings us a heart-warming love story in “Hiram’s Secret”. With a blend of erotic dreams, passionate feelings, and life-death scenario, readers will get to see gremlins get their own happy ending, and a surprising one, too!

Bret Jordan shows us why a gremlin is a creature with whom one should never mess around with. They are small, cunning creatures who can creep into your house even in the middle of the day, and you will never know what will happened to you until it is too late. “The Witch, the Hunter & the Bride” is a story which will make you feel like it’s Halloween every time you read it.

Fire for Ice by Cerise Amour

In Lanae, everybody has a gremlin including the princess, Callista. While playing with her gremlin one day, she suddenly finds herself in a room with a murderer who not only sees her but is waiting for her. With a killer on the loose, and a royal mark on the body of the last victim, Tamir, the royal guard, confronts the princess to get some answers. However, the intense attraction between the masters and their imps complicates the situation. Will their emotions get in the way and give the murderer a chance to get what he wants?

Gremlins may become one’s best friend, if given the chance. Cerise Amour explores a mythical world where gremlins and humans co-exist with such an unimaginable bond. “Fire and Ice” makes me want to have a gremlin myself. If I am unsure of my own feelings, just take a look at my gremlin and voila! I can figure it out. It is such a splendid idea!

You are My Sunshine by Crymsyn Hart

When Larissa moves into an apartment, she knows it is haunted. But what’s a girl to do when that’s the only one she can afford? With the cheap rent and one condition – never to disturb the owner who lives in the room downstairs – living with a ghost is no problem. But when there is a loud noise from her owner’s room every sunset, she gets curious. It seems Gregory has a secret, carrying a dangerous and life-threatening curse. Will her love prevail when the curse threatens to kill her?

For so long, Gregory suffers alone in the dark. But in the dark, the sun will shine and bring happiness with it. When Larissa struggles with her feelings, I wanted to be there to share her pain when she cried and laugh with her when she is happy. Her emotions touch my heart and brought tears to my eyes. The emotion, the suspense and the myth in Crymsyn Hart’s novella will surely tug your heart and your soul.

Night and Day by Dahlia Rose

Larkin Day witnesses her partner die in her arms with his insides and his blood splattered everywhere on a roof top. The thing that attacked her partner then jumps to attack her. Lucky for her, someone saves her in the nick of time. Facing a monster, or precisely a gremlin, for the first time is utterly unimaginable and shocking for Larkin. Unlucky for her, the gremlin already marked her for its next victim and will not allow her to escape death. Keaton Knight feels protective of Larkin, so he appoints himself as her protector. Will his skills be sufficient enough to save her from the gremlins, or will their feelings get in the way?

“Night and Day” is a fast-paced story that kept me gripping my seat. From the impressive fighting skills to the bone-chilling suspense, it made me anxious and kept me guessing. The queen’s appearance gives additional merits to the story. Dahlia Rose brings life to the characters and believable chemistry. This story is another great addition to the anthology.

Bonamy & Clyde by Dawne Dominique

Bonamy and Clyde are neighbors. Bonamy, ever the perfectionist, is badly affected when her life gets out of control. Clyde is new in town, but he has already been given the cold shoulder a few times by his neighbor, and that annoys him. When bizarre things occur and electrical appliances go crazy, both of their lives take an interesting turn. Is it just coincidence, or is it something more?

Although the story started out slow in the beginning, Dawne Dominique made up for it by teasing readers with her truth and dare game. The scene itself boosted my enjoyment in reading “Bonamy & Clyde”. However, the characters seemed cold, and I felt like there were not enough emotions and chemistry in the story. I can only say that this is not one of Dawne Dominique’s best work.

The Silver Scream by S. D. Grady

Gilda planned something special for her boyfriend on his birthday. However, their night of passion on the stage in the old theater does not go unnoticed. A pair of eyes watches them, anger rippling through his veins. Gilda and Seth couldn’t keep their hands off each other. But when a freak accident occurs, Gilda changes. Is their love strong enough to fight against all odds?

S.D. Grady caught my attention right from the beginning with the right amount of sexual teasing and passion. The mysterious, evil, dark creature gave off bone-chilling vibes which kept me on the edge. “The Silver Scream” reminded me of why love exists in the first place and the lengths people will go for it.

The Collettes: Willa by Dahlia Rose

Posted under Reviews by Virginia on Tuesday 7 October 2008 at 12:27 am
****

Willa is the third book in the Collettes Trilogy by Dahlia Rose. This book picks up where the Luna’s story ends. Willa has a dream where her future mate calls to her. In order to complete her part of the prophecy, she must leave her sisters behind to go find her mate Tyson. Tyson accepts his fate to become her mate and helps her to complete her mission to find the third part of the amulet. On the sisters’ 300th birthday, they travel to take on Carthos and fight him in a battle of good and evil. Will the sisters prevail and fulfill the prophecy that Carthos has worked so hard to thwart?

I give this book 4 tombstones. The series overall had an interesting theme to it and there were unexpected twists and turns throughout it which keeps the reader on their toes. In this particular story, I enjoyed learning more about Willa’s character. She wasn’t the person I envisioned throughout the books. Willa turned out to be the strongest one even though her sisters seem to overshadow her in the first two books. I would have liked to know more about Tyson’s background in this story since it was alluded to several times throughout the book. With the help of a werewolf pack and a few of Tyson’s friends, the sisters and their mates take on Carthos, where the story all comes to a fitting conclusion. Overall the Collettes is an interesting series and I would recommend it if you’re looking for a little bit of a different take on the vampire story line.

Book Excerpt: “The saga of The Collette sisters comes to a close with this thrilling third installment! The final battles draws near.

Betrayed by the one person they thought they could trust, Willa Collette had to fight for her life as she and her family fled the one place they could call home. To protect her sisters, she leaves them behind in search of her piece of the Lazarus amulet and her mate who has called her from another plane.

Tyson Finn is now her eternal love and together they travel to New Mexico to complete their destiny. In ten days the final battle will be fought for the fate of mankind. The vampire sisters and the allies that have joined their quest will travel to the lair of Carthos, where the balance might shift and forever change the world.”

The Darkest Joy by Dahlia Rose

Caim is a fallen angel who is being punished for 1000 years. His punishment is to serve Lucifer and collect his debts. He is nearing the end of his sentence and has found a way to escape being in Lucifer’s service for eternity. He has found peace and contentment and love in the arms of Bliss Tadeo who is a phlebotomist. He knows that she can help him escape his servitude. Bliss has never been exposed to the demon world, but vows that she will help Caim do whatever it takes so that they can be together.

I give this book 4 tombstones. I enjoyed it even though it had a very City of Angels feel to it with a few obvious differences. Caim is a fallen angel who is being punished for a transgression in heaven. But the overall story is very intriguing. The idea that a fallen angel can avoid becoming a demon and being one of Lucifer’s minions made for an interesting book. There is a scene where Bliss has to explain how chicken tenders taste to the fallen angel. I liked the idea that Bliss would be able to help save him and her medical knowledge didn’t hurt to have either. The chemistry between Bliss and Caim is steamy and romantic. I think that Ms. Rose’s story has a lot of potential and if you enjoyed City of Angels, then you’ll definitely enjoy “The Darkest Joy”. I am curious to see if she has a sequel planned for this book to further the story. If you like Ms. Rose’s other work, you’ll enjoy this book. Check it out today.

Book Excerpt: “For a crime committed in the halls of heaven, he fell from grace and became one of the fallen. Now he serves his punishment in the pits of the underworld as the collector of the devils debts. For Caim a thousand years in the servitude of demons is more than he could bear. Now he has to chance to be free and to find peace. He has found what he seeks most in the eyes and arms of Bliss Tadeo a phlebotomist in a small town called Merry North Carolina. With her eyes and her heart she has soothed the beast within him and given him a chance for redemption. If they can both survive his ultimate escape from hell…”

The Collettes: Luna by Dahlia Rose

The Collettes:Luna picks up where The Collettes:Sola leaves off. When Luna is out searching for a meal, she runs into Georgina Matthews, a vampire hunter who is out to take her revenge on the Collette family after they killed her father. Sparks fly and Luna and Georgina find that they are attracted to each other. Luna further discovers that Georgina is her mate and the one that will help her on her quest to find the second piece of the Lazarus Amulet.

Luna turns George and their clue will take them to the far reaches of the Salt Flats in Utah, not an ideal place for them to go as vampires. In order to complete the amulet, they will do what they must, including battling the forces of Carthos who is out to stop them. Will they find the second piece of the amulet in time. Will they be able to defeat Carthos forces to protect their family and the amulet pieces?

Luna has had a difficult time through the ages since she prefers women to men. She appealed to me because she seems to be the toughest of the sisters, but she still has a feminine side. It is especially difficult for her since she is both undead and a lesbian. The attraction between her and Georgina was well written, and while I normally wouldn’t pick up a f/f book by choice, I think Ms. Rose did a good job of writing the chemistry between the two women and the scenes were definitely steamy and intriguing.

The continuing storyline was brought out in this book and the plotline continued to develop smoothly. While there were some unexpected twists and turns in the book, they add to the storyline and make me want to know what will happen next in Willa’s story. I give this book 4 tombstones and if you enjoy f/f books, then you may want to check this book out. This book is not a standalone book because it is a continuing storyline. You will need to read The Collettes:Sola first since Luna’s story is built from the events in the first book.

Book Excerpt: “The Saga of the vampire sisters continues. Sola completed her quest for the first part of the Lazarus amulet with success. Now it is Luna Collette’s turn to find her part of destiny. Her ally comes in the form of the daughter of their enemy, Creve. Georgina Matthews, aptly nicknamed George, is a spitfire and vampire hunter who now she seeks revenge for the death of her father. When these two women meet, more than sparks of anger fly, but an attraction forms that they cannot deny. Will Luna be able to convince George that her life is meshed with the undead to save mankind? Will George be able to become something she has been taught to hate? A creature of the night, a hunter, and a drinker of blood.”

Night and Day by Dahlia Rose

Larkin Day is a New York city police officer. One night, she and her partner responded to a call on a roof. The call goes wrong and as Larkin’s partner lay dying, she is attacked by a monster. But this isn’t a monster of the human variety. Keaton Knight has spent his life hunting down gremlins. He saves Larkin’s life. And now he faces the challenge of protecting a lady cop and convince her that gremlins were real and not like the ones that had been described in all the fairy tales. But can he keep his feelings about her from distracting him from his duty?

I give Night and Day 3 1/2 tombstones. I have enjoyed most of the works by Dahlia Rose so far. I do think this book definitely has some promise. Its the first paranormal book that I’ve read about gremlins and it was a treat to read about something besides vampires and shapeshifters. While I enjoyed the romance scenes, I think some of the plotline got lost behind them. But I think that Larkin and Keaton are strong characters and I think Ms. Rose does a great job of building the chemistry between them. The romance scenes are well written and definitely yummy.

Her descriptions of the gremlins paint a vivid picture. I definitely would not want to meet her version of a gremlin in a dark alley. I hope that at some point, Ms. Rose might want to write a sequel to this story and tell some more of the adventures of Keaton and Larkin chasing gremlins. If you’re looking for something different from the vampire and shapeshifters so prevalent in paranormal romance fiction, I suggest you give Night and Day a try.

The Collettes: Sola by Dahlia Rose

Posted under Reviews by Virginia on Friday 1 August 2008 at 1:01 pm

Sola and her sisters were triplets born to an undead mother and father. They’ve been raised since birth by a trusted family friend named Jarrod, who has served as a father figure to the triplets for the past 299 years. The Collette sisters have been hunted by a coven who seeks to destroy them because of their unholy birth. The sisters are approaching their 300th birthday and have been given the task of finding the pieces of the Lazarus amulet. Sola meets Gideon Godspeed when the club she works at gets raided. She knows that he is to help her on her quest. In helping on her quest, a relationship blossoms between the two.

I give this book 4 tombstones. The story really intrigued me, with triplet sisters born to a vampire mother and father and an amulet used to daywalk, all are intriguing pieces to create a great story. I enjoyed Dahlia Rose’s writing style throughout this book. The plot line is interesting and there are fun parts throughout the story. There is also a little mystery between searching for the amulet and evading capture from the people who want to eradicate them from existence. It appears that Ms. Rose has written this story in three parts, telling the tale of each of the sisters, so while we’re briefly introduced to Luna and Willa, their story is not told in this book. Gideon provides an interesting counterpart to Sola, although I must say, I was a little surprised that as a cop he was so accepting of what he needed to do as a vampire. But I enjoyed him as Sola’s mate. I look forward to reading more of Dahlia Rose’s works in the future and I would recommend this series as something different to read in vampire lore.

Book Excerpt: “Sola Collette’s birthday looms on the horizon in a few weeks and so does her destiny, a fate that is tied in with her sisters. Three girls born of vampires three hundred years ago, whose hearts only made one beat before they lived life as part of the undead. Their destiny is to find the three pieces of the Lazarus Amulet, the most powerful object in the vampire world. Each piece allows the one who wears it to walk in the daylight. When it is combined it has more power than ever possibly imagined.

Both human and vampires alike want this treasure and they will go to any lengths to get it from the sisters. Each sister’s quest is to find her piece of the amulet. The amulet can only be destroyed when the pieces are joined together, and each sister has promised to do so. To keep it would only mean the constant threat to mankind.”

The Soulmate’s Curse by Dahlia Rose

Posted under Reviews by Virginia on Friday 4 July 2008 at 1:00 am

There is a legend that the Valentino men sense their beloveds and claim them as their own and nothing can stand between them and their destiny. Because of this destiny, a curse was laid on the Valentino’s that they will turn into a wolf and would always kill their beloved before they could create a child. Lucas Valentino senses his beloved and runs away so that he will not harm her, but in an odd twist of fate, she comes to him.

Sonja is an EMT and is taking off some time from her job due to the last run that she had done going bad. She suffers from nightmares and heads to Destiny to escape the memories of that night. She runs into Lucas Valentino who realizes that she is the one he tried to escape. The Valentine’s moon is only a few weeks away. It is believed that on that night, they may be able to escape the curse if Sonja is strong enough to do what has to be done.

I give book this 4 tombstones, I really enjoyed it and found that it was tough to put down. At 57 pages, it was a fairly easy read and not too time consuming either. I thought that the chemistry that happens between Lucas and Sonja was brought out well. The legend was an intriguing addition to the story. The other townspeople and characters in the story brought out some life to the story and helped to show another side to Sonja and Lucas. Sonja’s belief that she can save them from the curse and her refusal to leave Lucas’s side and run leaves the reader hanging on and rooting for them to make it past the curse. If you enjoy shapeshifter romances, this book is for you.

Book Excerpt: “The Valentino men are cursed to become wolves without a single wound. All because of love and the destiny to find their soul mates. One Valentino man loved the wrong woman and now the whole line of men is cursed from generation to generation–to become the wolf and kill their beloved before she can ever conceive a child. They all have managed to find a way to add one more to the Valentino name. Lucas Valentino is the last and he has felt the pull of his mate. So he ran not just to save himself but to save her. Now in a small town called Destiny nestled in the Appalachian Mountains, she has found him by accident. Sonja Stone has unwittingly walked into the path of her soul mate and his dangerous family curse. In the snowy mountains, they find an intense passion and love. They must work together to find a way to break the curse or suffer the ultimate sacrifice…their death.”
