Journey of the Princess of Ice (The Elementals) by LaVerne ThompsonMeet Ice An interview as told to LaVerne Thompson

First of all thank you Bitten By Books for having me here today so I can talk a little about myself and my story,Journey of the Princess of Ice.

I am a Princess of Ice, from a world of never ending winters. Thus I seek the cold. The blood in my veins contains chips of
blue ice. I can survive in any climate because I can change my environment to suit my needs. Though I try not to because only my kind can survive in the frigid temperatures that I love, but my control is tenuous. To keep the freeze my body emits contained near me, I wear a specially treated hooded long fur coat. No, it’s not a fashion statement, but a necessity for both our protection.
My skin cannot be touched, to do so might lead to ice burns or worse. If I so choose, something I rarely do, I can warm my hand. However, heat is my enemy. You see fire destroyed my world. Yet I burn for companionship from within but my heart is frozen. Thus I remain alone and untouched. The only time I come alive is when I dance. And even that I do alone.

I have lived for a millennium and travelled through many realms forever seeking a place of freeze and others of my kind. Thus far I am the sole survivor of the ice elemental race. No matter how much I desire, I can never stay one place for very long because the longer I remain the colder it becomes and I kill with my ice. So either I leave of my own accord before that happens or sometimes the fear of others force me out. So I have no home.

My name is Ice Princess… don’t bother to turn up the heat.

Journey of the Princess of Ice - The Elementals
An adult graphic fantasy
By LaVerne Thompson

Book Blurb:
What happens when fire meets ice?
Ice had traveled the realms for centuries searching for the ice elementals, others
of her kind but she was alone always alone. Never staying one place for long
because sooner or later her mere presence caused the temperature of the land
to drop to a killing freeze. Until she found the one place her powers had no effect.
And perhaps the one being who could counter her freeze.

Running from a destiny not of his own choosing, Arch finally found the one
person who could make him stop running. But Ice must never learn the truth. A
fire demon destroyed her world and he was his father’s son.

  1. Hi, Laverne Welcome to BBB!

What sorts of things do you enjoying doing for relaxation?

  2. What are your favorite paranormal books or tv series?

    • My favorite would be Nalini Singh and her Psi series
My favorite tv show is really a sci/fi Farscape but if I had to go with paranormal it would be the Underworld series of movies

  3. Boy do I feel bad for Ice. I love the cold but to never be able to get warm would be bothersome. How long can she stay in one place before she freezes it? Will a human be able to stabilize her so they can touch or will some other means be needed?
    Thank you.
    vsloboda(at)gmail(dot)com

    • Hi Viki- lol don’t feel bad for Ice for her the cold is her element. At first not long only a few days as she got older perhaps a little longer. She was a child when she’d be separated from her kind. But as she gained more control she could be around longer. And no humans can’t touch her.

  4. What is your favourite genre to read?

  5. I like the ice and fire elements. I can definitely see ice as being lonely, cold and apart from everything. It’ll be interesting to meet the Ice Princess.

    • Thank you. And yes Ice is an interesting character. One of my favorites to date. The concept of fire and ice I found interesting and wanted to come at it from a purely elemental angle.

  6. Which would you prefer to be an ice or fire elemental?

  7. If you could only eat one kind of food for the rest of your life what would it be?

  8. If a movie were made from your book, who would you cast for Ice and Fire?

  9. Are you planning to write any other books about the Princess of Ice?

    • Yes this is the first book in the Elemental series. The second book, The Ice Man will be mostly about her brother’s search for her. So far there are 3 books in the series and should stay that way.

  10. Sounds like a great read. How did you come up with the idea of Ice?

    • I always wanted to write about a woman who truly was made of ice. Not just acted like an ice princess but was one. And I loved the idea of her counterpart being made of fire.

  11. I love the ice princess idea. So much of the paranormal genre is vampires or weres, and I am always looking for something new. Who are your favorite authors?

    • Thanks Heatwave and I thought the same thing. Don’t get me wrong I love my vamps and weres. lol but I wanted to do something a little different. And favorite author is a tough one for me I have so many who’ve influenced me in various genres. But these are just a few I enjoy in no particular order: Stobie Piel, Robert Jordan, Amanda Ashley, Julie Garwood, Christine Feehan, Anne Mccaffrey, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Jane Austen, Octavia Butler, Terry Brooks

  12. What movies or books being released in 2013 are you most looking forward to?

    • As far as books lol finishing my own. So Ice Man and Dragon’s Blood would be my first 2 choices. lol As far as movies the only one I’d like to see right now is that Hansel and Gretel movie that just came out, my kinda movie. lol

  13. If you could live in any particular time period, what would it be?

  14. What other creative outlets do you like to pursue?

  15. Hi, do you plan on writing other Elementals stories, covering different (or all) elements?

  16. What is your favorite part of the story?

  17. What books are currently next on your nightstand or ereader?

  18. What other books do you write? are thay are Fantasy?

  19. Thanks for being here! So who is your favorite character in Journey of the Princess of Ice?

  20. Favorite Cheese? Favorite Drink? Panster or plotter? What inspired Ice Princess?

    • hahahahaha hi Vanessa. I’ll take them in order:
      Favorite Cheese- goat brie mild
Favorite Drink- sparkling water any brand
Panster or plotter- Both. Different stories hit me different ways.
What inspired Ice Princess- The concept of a woman being thought of as an ice queen or princess if she comes off too proud. But I wanted to take it one step further and make her not just figuratively cold but literally so. Ice has ice chips in her veins.

  21. Hi! :) How did you come up with this world – definitely a new (at least to me) fantasy element! :)

    Lois

    • Hi Lois- I cut my eye teeth on complex fantasy worlds: Robert Jordan the Wheel of Time series, The Sunrunner books by Melanie Rawn, Frank Herbert’s Dune, Octavia Butler. I started the world with the concept of the characters, Ice and her counterpart heat, Arch. The story centers around what happened to the ice elementals and the fire demons role in their destruction. But other elements will come into play as the stories develop. Because all elements are connected they need each other for balance.

  22. What was your favorite childhood book?

    • Hey Doville- That’s a great question. I devoured books. I was the kid sitting on the porch with her nose in a book or a pen in her hand. My favorites as a child were the classics Legend of King Arthur, Moby Dick, Treasure Island to name a few.

  23. Have you ever written fan fiction? For what fandom?

  24. HI LAVERNE, NOW YOU HAVE MY INTEREST AND ADDING YOU TO MY TBBL!

  25. hi LAVern, you are a new author to me and I enjoyed your post :)

  26. I saw above you read Robert Jordans WOT series. Did you get to finish it earlier this month? If so, what did you think? I finished it myself and loved it.

    • Sorry Joani I thought I hit reply so I’m just copying my reply here to make sure you see it.

No I haven’t read the last books. I kinda don’t want to. I know he left all of his notes and his wife who was his editor co-wrote it with the another author. I can’t help but feel it won’t be the same. Jordan created complex worlds and as an author myself I know I’ll have notes here or an idea but once I actually begin to write things change. Shorts become longer works. Single stories become a series. So no I probably will never read it. Not to mention I don’t have time. lol

  27. What are your thouhgts on audiobooks? Listen to any? Are any of yours available? If not, do you think they’d “read well” in audio?

    • When I commuted I loved audio books. They’re harder to find in the stores today and expensive but I still like them for long drives. And yeah with the right voices I think my work would be great in audio. And funny you should ask but one of my publishers asked me if I want my books on audio with them I said yes but it’s going to be awhile. Journey of the Princess of Ice would be one but I have no idea what the time frame is. But if it’s like publishing something then I won’t look for it until next year. lol

  28. Not to mention I don’t have time. lol

  29. Wow,that sounds awesome, how did you come up with the concept of ice/fire race?

    • Thanks Candy and the concept was elemental. lol. Seriously I had this idea for a heroine made of ice an ice princess and of course her counter part had to be he exact opposite something made of heat, fire, thus Arch the fire demon was born. From their I created the world around the two and the idea that one had to give ground to the other because fire can’t exist with ice but in fact they can because ice too can burn. So that was the concept I built around how they’re able to fuse their powers.

  30. What made you want to do this in a graphic novel rather than a traditional novel? Was this the original plan?

  31. Hi Biki- Yes actually. I wanted to try something different. I always enjoyed graphic comics in the more traditional sense and character storytelling so wanted to combine the two.

  32. Fire and Ice is such a wonderful concept and as old as time, well done writing about it

  33. Are there going to be more books with this concept??

  34. Will you be doing any of the cons? This book sounds great.

  35. Great concept! Instant conflict right there between the elements.

Where/how do you do your best or most productive writing? At home, a coffeeshop, or…?

    • Hi JulieT and thank you. At home. And if I need to hide for some focus time the basement is great. I turn the lights in the stairwell off so at first glance looks like no ones down there. But I’m sitting around the corner with my laptop on. hahahahaha

  36. Do you have a muse? Who or what is it?

  37. I love the premise of this book. The fact that she is the sole survivor of her kind and he is the son of the man responsible for killing her people and her world. Sounds to me like forbidden love or love that comes at the cost of someone keeping his heritage secret. Definitely a must read!

    • Hi Shannon- Thank you and yes. Arch keeps his secrets at first because he fears what would happen if she finds out. There are a lot of levels to this story and lessons that they both learn.

  38. Answers to the authors questions –
A fire demon destroyed Ice’s world and just happens to be Arch’s father.
Ice finds Arch in her quest to find people like herself.
Arch is running from a destiny that was not his choosing.

    • Oops, I didn’t know I had to answer these in the Rafflecopter form. I will go back and do that.

  39. Hi LaVerne. I love stories associated with ice/cold. It would be fun to write a character who could wield that element.

  40. Why do you use different pen names for different genres? Wouldn’t it be a bonus to have fans follow you from one genre to another?

    • Hi Beth- I do it so fans will know what kind of book to expect from me. Ursula Sinclair will only write romantic suspense but most of my fans also know both names. But when they pick up a LaVerne Thompson book they’re more than likely to get a paranormal/fantasy or sometimes straight up romance.

  41. How much time took you to write this book?

  42. When not writing, what are your favorite genres to read?

    • Hi Margay pretty much the same kinds of books I write I like to read but I also read historicals. I haven’t written any of those yet. And I’ve found myself reading this new type of genre that’s considered young adult but 17+. These tend to deal with some serious subject matters that young people have to deal with. The angst in these stories tug at your emotions but I don’t really see resolutions to the problems they pose and because the hero and heroine are both still so young usually between 18-22 the jury really is still out as to the outcome of their lives. So these books don’t really have happily ever afters and I love HEAs. lol
