Audio Review: Untamed by P. C. Cast and Kristin Cast

Zoey Redbird’s life is in turmoil. Her friends all hate her, she is still reeling from being used and cast aside by Lauren, and not one but both of her other two boyfriends had cut themselves out of her life. Everyone is pissed at Zoey, and life at the House of Night seems to be only soothed thanks to Persephone, the mare she was in charge of in the stables…well, the horse and the new boy who seems really nice, making Zoey want to know him better.

Something is in the air and it wasn’t the feel of the change in the weather. Zoey was truly afraid for herself, not for everyone else for a change…well, for at least a moment anyway. She needed her friends, needed them to forgive her and accept her mistakes and help her with the dangers that were in the air of Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the night. When the High Priestess Shekinah comes to investigate the deaths at the Tulsa House of Night, Zoey hopes that she will see for herself how much Neferet had veered from Nix’s path. A new boy with a powerful gift, a visit from Zoey’s grandmother and some volunteering at a cat shelter all blend together as diversions for Zoey’s attention, but with Nix’s faith and her friends’ trust, Air, Fire, Water, Earth and Spirit will be with her in the fight against an ancient evil. The HON fledglings and Stevie Rae’s red fledglings must fight for not only their own lives but for the humans in the city as a cry of war is made and Neferet brings something dark and deadly to their world, something that the Cherokee people had thought gone for good.

I have Untamed in book format and read it the week it came out two years ago. Recently, I was asked to review some of the audio versions by MacMillan audio. Using this method of media certainly brings out more of the emotion of the circumstances that Zoey has to face. For those who berated her for her angst filled teen boyfriend drama (including myself), listening to her tell her side of the story will certainly help in believing that she truly has real heartfelt feelings for all the men in her life—or rather those that were a part of her life. Jenna Lamia does a wonderful job at relating Zoey’s turmoil, as well as using her various accents to bring the other characters to life. Neferet comes across as the truly evil person she is, Shekinah comes across as all knowing and considerate, Stevie Rae’s twang is an amusing performance and the others all show their own personalities in the various fluctuations in the conversations. If you have the chance, pick up the audio version and take a chance. Although I do admit that I cannot indulge in this without a set of headphones on, I really enjoyed this method of storytelling.
