He has always been kind to her but today marks her fifteenth birthday, a day when she will be forever branded as his property. But a story she tells before the ceremony has the master up in arms and Reychel thrown in the dungeon. Her life will change dramatically and she will be called upon to help free her people, but Reychel must first discover what it is that makes her so special and coveted.Anathema is immediately engaging, revealing to readers the harsh world of Reychel and the other slaves. The world the author has created, one of oppression, but filled with magic and hope, is quite stunning.
The characters are likeable and have the possibility of being dynamic, well-rounded and fully-dimensional creations with a little more development. Reychel goes from slave to leader, feels the sting of betrayal, and falls in love, but her character remains fairly static. Reychel has amazing potential as a character, one who could be a remarkable heroine in the YA fantasy genre. I am certainly excited to see where the author takes her and her growth through each successive book.
Each character is flawed. Even the most unlikeable people have redeeming qualities and conversely the negative traits found in the most good-hearted of people helps in maintaining realism in this world of magic and fantasy. Overall, this is a captivating, exciting book with many twists and turns that will have you hooked from the beginning.
