Action and Adventure During the Holiday Season: Neverland and the Doctor Who Christmas Special

Neverland, SyFy Mini-series
I had an interesting response to Neverland – I liked it at first, then I wasn’t sure, then I kind of didn’t, but at the end I liked it quite a bit. I thought it was a bit too dark in parts, and kind of left out the sense of wonder that I have always associated with the story. I really liked the character Fox, and we know how that ended up. Ultimately, I felt as though the show served as an interesting prequel to the story we are all familiar with. Now I want to watch the animated Disney film again, which I haven’t seen in years.

Favorite line: when Peter and Fox first arrive in Neverland and try to figure out where they are, Peter says, “We’re not in Shoreditch anymore.” I thought that was a nice homage to The Wizard of Oz , as the stories were from the same time period.

Did you watch this mini-series? If so, what did you think? Did you have a favorite scene?

Dr. Who Christmas Special: The Doctor, the Widow, and the Wardrobe (BBC America)
I don’t watch this show, but have really enjoyed the Christmas specials the last two years. I’m not sure if it’s typical for the series or not, but this episode managed to pull off beautiful and creepy at the same time. While the show played on its parallels with The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, it branched off into its own unique blend and became something a bit different. It was touching, nonsensical, funny, and heartwarming – a great combination for the holidays.

Favorite lines: “I found a spaceman in a field, possibly an angel” (Madge to her son, Cyril).
“Fairyland! Oh, grow up, Lily. Fairyland looks completely different” (The Doctor to Lily).

Did you watch this episode? If so, did you like it? What was your favorite scene?

Watchers, a number of genre shows are beginning or returning over the next two months:

Alcatraz (Fox) 1/16
Being Human (SyFy) 1/16
The Fades (BBC America) 1/14
Fringe 1/13
Grimm 1/13
Lost Girl 1/16
Merlin 1/6
Once Upon a Time 1/8
The River 2/7
The Secret Circle 1/5
Supernatural 1/6
The Vampire Diaries 1/5
The Walking Dead 2/12

Which shows are you most looking forward to? Which ones would you most like to discuss?

I have a few more episodes of Sanctuary left (the finale just aired on 12/30), so I will say a few words about it next time.

Happy viewing!

  1. I love Dr. Who… discovered the series a few years ago… and watch or record him now. I have this year’s Christmas special on my DVR… am looking forward to watching it!
AND we’re most looking forward to the return of The Walking Dead! We actually spent Christmas re-watching the 1st season… I found it at our library…. and even though we’d seen it when it 1st aired, we discovered new things we hadn’t noticed back then…

    • Linda, I really liked this year’s Dr. Who special.

I need to catch up on The Walking Dead, so I’ll be ready when the season starts back up. :)

  2. I feel the same way about Neverland. I kept going back and forth with not liking some things and really liking others. I think that’s why I wished it was a limited series instead of a mini-series. I ultimately wanted more story than was shown. I wanted to see more of The Lost Boys beginning their adventures throughout Neverland. But I did really like it.

Sooo many shows all coming back at the same time! And new ones too!

I watch Supernatural on a belated schedule. So I still need to catch up with that. I pretty much watch all the returning shows except for The Secret Circle and The Vampire Diaries. And all the new ones look pretty good too. SO it’s gonna be a busy TV schedule for me!

Although I have to say, Alcatraz kind of reminds me of Brimstone, one of my favorites that got cancelled a while ago.

And I had no idea of the exact dates fr everything. So thanks for putting up the schedule for all the shows! :)

    • You’re welcome, Rae. I thought it would be helpful to have dates all in one place. :)

I never watched Brimstone, though I remember the title. I loved visiting Alcatraz several years ago, so am curious to see what they will do with it.

All in all, I did enjoy Neverland, but thought it was just a little uneven, I guess. And I’m still unhappy about Fox…

  3. I did watch the mini series Neverland and thoroughly enjoyed it. Anyone know if there might me more? At the end when Peter was talking about the hundreds of islands and adventures to be found in Neverland, it made me wonder about the possibility of a series.

    • Lisa, I haven’t heard anything about more Neverland, but they certainly left the door open to possibility, didn’t they? :)

  4. @#$%! I my DVR malfunctioned and I only got part 1 of Neverland. I liked what I saw but wish I could have seen the rest of it! It’s not on demand, either! @#$%-ing DVR.
