The illness of Captain James gave his first mate, Ezra Foster, too much leeway to unleash his foul temper on the deckhands, and second mate Jeptha Dawes was powerless to stop his brutality. As the whaling ship drew nearer to Nantucket Harbor, Ezra Foster gave the order to drop anchor. Captain James suspected Foster’s intent and entrusted second mate Dawes with the secrets he had carried alone for the entire journey. Foster had ravaged a South Sea island and now possessed a talisman that gave him extraordinary powers and magnified his evil nature. According to the captain, Foster must not be allowed on shore for fear his evil would take over, and he requested Dawes’s help to combat that evil. (more…)

A book whose pages are empty of everything except a woodcut of a dragon with the word “Drakulya” and a set of letters, yellowed with age, are both found in her diplomat father’s library. Even more intriguing, the letters are all addressed to “My dear and unfortunate successor.” Finding those sets the daughter, unknowingly at first glance, on a search that is as life changing for her as it was for those who came before her. Bridge of Souls by Sheri Lewis Wohl

Bridge of Souls is a beautiful contemporary romance with a ghostly mystery. It takes place in a building once a schoolhouse but lovingly restored by its new owner, ex-police officer Jason Bigelow who goes by Bigs. As I read the author’s descriptive prose about the schoolhouse, I knew I would like this story. This story begins when a woman, Anna Koch (whose real first name is Adrian), goes to the house to rent an apartment. A bond is formed that day - or two, to be precise. (more…)

Blueberry Muffins by Kate Hill

Gay Elves always make a great basis for a story (at least in this reader’s eyes). Magic and mystery are not far behind, and Kate Hill deftly combines these three in her novella, “Blueberry Muffins.”

Dylan, a rebel elf, left the Wicked Wild and moved to Grimton City after a disastrous affair. He now runs a shelter for other magical people. Since his work is his life, he lives above his shelter with his roommate, the dancer Antjuan. When one of his volunteers is accused of robbery, Dylan is taken into custody by the sexy Joel. (more…)

Proven Guilty by Jim Butcher

Newly-cloaked Warden Harry Dresden is asked to investigate reports of black magic in Chicago by his former mentor, Ebenezar. He has barely begun when the Blue Beetle is rammed by a mysterious car and Michael Carpenter’s daughter, Molly (now a teenage runaway), calls, begging for his help. Molly’s boyfriend is in jail for the savage beating of an old man at a horror film convention, but she says he didn’t do it. After a trip to the convention site, Harry agrees with her: it appears to be the work of movie monsters made real.

This adventure eventually takes Harry and his unlikely team (Lieutenant Murphy, Thomas the vampire, and Michael’s wife, Charity) to Arctis Tor, Queen Mab’s stronghold in the faery realm of Winter. All the while, the shadow of fallen angel Lasciel (her “stupid mental sock puppet,” as Harry says) is still hanging around in his head, tempting Harry to solve every one of the gigantic mound of his problems by taking up the coin and embracing her evil assistance.

Proven Guilty is a dense book that leaves the reader with many intriguing loose ends. It’s a connecting, dark-feeling book; a second act in the tradition of The Empire Strikes Back. War is still raging, Harry has been pressed into a service he hates and that is against his moral code, Wardens and other council members don’t trust him, and Lasciel’s presence is wearing him down (sometimes keeping him from trusting himself).

There’s plenty of humor and action amid the confusion and darker themes of this novel. The character of Charity Carpenter is a bright point. She raises the bar for mothers and tough women everywhere – a lucid, faith-filled Sarah Connor.

Proven Guilty is a great read and an essential part of Harry’s story. I don’t know how well it would be received by readers new to the series, but that’s okay because no one should be starting with book eight anyway. Important things are best done in order starting with Storm Front.

The Witch’s Grave by Shirley Damsgaard

*****

The Witch’s Grave is the sixth book in the Ophelia and Abby mystery series. One of my secret guilty pleasures are cozy mysteries, and when you add a twist of the paranormal to it, you have some pretty addicting reading material. Shirley Damsgaard’s series is no exception!

The thing I really enjoy about this series is that outside of being really well written and a great read, the characters have depth and are interesting. They grow with each installment, and leave the reader anticipating what could possibly come next.

Again we find Ophelia in the thick of a murder investigation, only this time, it looks as if they may actually be targeting her, and her dream man. The adventure starts out by her relating a series of, shall we say erotic dreams about a gorgeous hunk of a man to her best friend Darcy. Imagine her surprise when she actually meets him at a fund raising event for the library at a local winery. They are instantly attracted to one another, but before they can take their relationship further than a first sweet kiss, a gunman shoots her beau to be.

As she races against the clock to find the killer, she begins to have another set of dreams that appear to be some kind of flash back to another time. This aspect of the story really added another interesting layer and depth that was thoroughly enjoyable. It is nice to see Ophelia start to trust and use her powers more as well.

Will Ophelia finally get her happily ever after? Or will it be snatched away in the blink of an eye? Whether or not you have read one or all of the Ophelia and Abby series, you will be sure to enjoy The Witch’s Grave.
