The most damaged heart can fly with the right pair of wings.

For as long as she can remember, Madelyn has loved her Evanti guard, Harper. Half Evanti herself, she envies his ability to fly and melts with every bit of attention he shows her. Without him and her half-sister, Emma, Maddie would never have survived her childhood and the attentions of her father (by name, not blood). Maddie’s world is turned on its axis when Harper attacks her father and rescues the sisters. He takes them to a secret colony of free-born Evanti and freed slaves, guaranteeing them safety. For once, Maddie feels safe. But the feeling is fleeting.

Christina Kelly delivers a riveting modern day vampire tale in her debut novel, The Eternal Kiss. The story is told through the eyes of three principle characters all deeply in love with each other. The author manages to balance all three characters’ different perspectives into a chilling story of boy meets girl, girl meets other boy and all three must face off against an evil hell bent on destroying them all. On the Verge of Madness is a collection of a novella and various short stories. This book is a very palatable offering for a reader who likes stories that probe into the unknown and often disturbing areas of the imagination. Mr. Wilhite offers up stories that stand out and distinguish themselves from many in the modern horror scene. (more…)

Fatal Circle by Linda Robertson

Fatal Circle by Linda Robertson brought tears to my eyes. The emotional depth of each character lapped at my feet and tried to lure me in. I could either drown in the possible sorrows or learn to swim by trial by fire. Reading this series has been like watching a child grow, from a wobbly toddler first learning about its world in Vicious Circle, to an obstinate, hormonal teen in Hallowed Circle, to an adult, sure of itself and ready to take on the world in Fatal Circle.

Poison Spirit by Erich Beller

Poison Spirit is a dark fantasy that delves into the heavy burden of blood sin on the shoulders of a tormented soldier in medieval Europe. Ulrich Volker is that man. He is desperately in search of peace, torn between his innate bloodlust, fed by almost twenty years of soldiering, and his conscience haunts him with his past murderous deeds for money and at the order of the princes he served.

Midnight’s Daughter by Karen Chance

This was a very dark, disturbing book. In a good way. The Cassie Palmer series is very dark as well, but it holds more light-heartedness and humor. Dory’s story is pure raw pain and emotion.

Dorina Basarab is contacted by Mircea to stop his brother, Vlad Tepes himself, before he can wreak havoc once again. But Vlad isn’t just a stranger she can kill without remorse; he’s also her uncle, and has almost killed her once already.

Connection by Jo Ramsey

I have read many dark fantasies and a few books that deal with abusive parents, but oddly enough, I have never really encountered one that gives equal weight to both until now. In Connection, the first in her Reality Shift series, Jo Ramsey has created a darkly realistic world where the mysterious unknown is not the most terrifying element.

Ouroboros by Michael Kelly and Carol Weekes

Ouroboros is a very hard book to review. I sit here, trying to digest the concept of this story. I’m not a practitioner of any sort of Eastern wisdom but I always thought that the various disciplines that fall into Eastern philosophy are designed to bring peace and a sense of connection with the universe, to improve the state of mind. This story, with its central theme revolving around an Eastern concept of death and renewal, only managed to bring me a pervasive sense of unease. (more…)

Two factions of angelic-styled, winged creatures have been battling for supremacy, and, as in every war, individuals become caught up in the battles that seize their peoples. One is Anyar, a beautiful youth who catches the eye of both his garrison commander and a leader of the enemy, Vanyae. The latter, in the process of taking hostages, seizes Anyar for his own uses. As the younger man’s captivity continues, however, he finds that the exotic Vanyae may have the potential to be more than a master to him.
