Blood Hunted by Aline de Chevigny

Of all the characters in Ms. de Chevigny’s Chronicles of the Cursed series (and I like them all), Nicolai and Kelly are my favorite couple. Nicolai is strong, quiet, protective, and deadly. He gets the job done remarkably well without tooting his horn. When he promises something, consider it accomplished. He definitely is a knight in shining armor. (more…)

Nature’s Whim by Aline de Chevigny

***½

Ares, God of war, has a problem, he can’t get Desi out of his mind, the woman who left him because she was bored. She wounded his ego and now she is haunting his dreams, distracting him from ruling the world.

Desi isn’t the only woman causing Ares grief. Gaia, mother nature is missing and natural disasters are wiping out his army and unsettling the humans. Ares does what any God would, he vows to win back Desi, find Gaia and then he’ll make war and gain more followers.

Winning back Desi however involves her cooperation and she has other plans. She has a missing teenager to find and doesn’t have time to be caught up in Ares’ s bedroom games, no matter how appealing. But she is going to need his help when Thor blocks her search for the teenager and tries to claim Desi for his own. With Gaia’s absence destroying the planet, Ares and Desi need to start trusting each other or there will be nothing left for Ares to rule.

I love the idea that the ancient Gods are still trying to get our attention, that their power is derived from their follower’s devotion. This is a light hearted fun read that proves even the Gods are only human when it comes to love.

The Ravenson Project by Aline de Chevigny

Aline de Chevigny has done it this time. This book started with hot and intense passion. But there is more to The Ravenson Project besides the love scenes. It has an element of surprise and a lot of action that kept me on the edge. I just had to keep reading until I reached the end.

Malek found Sharra, a one-more-day-to-be a Keeper in his chamber when he woke up from his slumber. He bonded with her that night and kept her until morning. To be with a mortal in daylight is against the law in the Raven’s house and Malek knows it. Blinded by his passion and need for her, he broke the law and shared his bed with her until day. Unfortunately for him, he was being watched.

Lord Daemor of Raven clan has plans for Malek, the young wolf shifter. He has eyes for Annabella, mate of Mikael of the Wolf clan and he is willing to do anything in his power to ensure she will be his. He is a smart and patient vampire and he is using Malek to gain his goal. He has waited a long time to have what Mikael has - looks, charm, power and a mate, he wants it all.

The plot thickens with every page. The chase, the hunt, the fight, the vengeance, thrilled me. This is an enjoyable book which can satisfy your hunger for action.

Blood Red by Aline de Chevigny

Blood Red: Chronicles of the Cursed is a very short story of Mikael, a ruthless vampire and feared leader of his clan. Cursed for eternity, on the edge of losing his emotion and feelings, he searched for his true love, the one who is able to flick emotions into his cold heart. The only person who is able to do so is his Keeper, Annabella. Annabella has the power to melt his heart and brings passion and love into his life. The problem is she wants more out of her partner. The spark and chemistry between them heightened the passion and love. Blood Red is a quick read that you can enjoy it even during your lunch break.

Book Excerpt: “Mikael De Wohlf has lived the better part of his life as a ruthless, vicious vampire. Only one person, Annabella Micelli, has managed to sooth his vampire ire to warm what is left of his soul. But Annabella despises the way Mikael lives, the way he metes out justice, the way he has brought about the downfall of his enemies. How can he turn her disgust into lust and then maybe into love?”

The Prophecy by Aline de Chevigny

Posted under Book Reviews, Magic, e-books by Becky on Thursday 10 July 2008 at 12:15 am
****

In The Prophecy, Ms. De Chevigny has created an alternate world that parallels ours. The inhabitants of Eloisia are able to see us through viewing stones and interact if they choose, but they generally regard humans as inferior. It comes as a bit of a surprise to his friends when Danan spots Melinda through the viewing stone. Danan has a bit of a reputation with the women of Eloisia but is tired of being used for other’s pleasure. He wants someone who will give pleasure in return instead of just taking it from him. When he sees Melinda, he instinctively knows she is such a woman, human or not. It was thought that he would marry the Queen’s daughter Zoilana but even before Melinda, Danan knew he would never marry her. Zoilana is spoiled and selfish; not at all the type of woman Danan wants to spend eternity with. Danan watches Melinda through the viewing stone for weeks gathering information about her before he approaches her.

Melinda is a therapist with a thriving practice but an otherwise solitary life. She doesn’t date and has minimal contact with her parents. Melinda has always felt that her mother sees her as a disappointment of some kind but she doesn’t know why. When a hot hunk of man suddenly appears with his head in her lap at the park, Melinda is confused but pleasantly surprised. Danan flirts with no shame but Melinda somehow thinks that he is serious. When Zoilana shows up and tries to stake her claim on Danan, Melinda tells him to straighten out his own affairs so she’s not caught in the middle. She avoids the park for a month after that but is eventually drawn back since it is her favorite place. She is met once again by Danan and with no interference from Zoilana, is unable to resist him and they start dating. Melinda is touched that Danan lets her set the pace of the relationship. She is still a virgin and is not one to rush into things.

During the months of their relationship, they are faced with issues ranging from Zoilana to a family heritage that Melinda knows nothing about. To stay together, Danan will have to go up against Queen Mathilda and Melinda will have to face some life changing truths about herself.

I have said before that I usually have problems keeping things straight with alternate worlds but I enjoyed this one. There was just enough information about Eloisia to keep you on track, but not so much that you were flooded with unneeded and confusing information. I liked the development of the characters and get the impression that there could be more books about characters in this world. I hope there is as there are a couple of characters that I’m curious about their future. I would have liked to have seen more specific resolution at the end in regards to Melinda and her life on Earth and her mother, but it was still a good ending. All in all though, it was an enjoyable story; one you could easily read in a sitting.

Bare Bones by Aline de Chevigny

Almost a year ago, Joanne Stuart’s best friend Christian Clarke disappeared from the very forest that Joanne is in now. It took her this long to bring herself to come here after Christian went missing. She finds Christian’s compass, one that she gave him, in the woods. Opening it and seeing a picture of the two of them taped to the inside, Joanne realizes that Christian had feelings for her but never told her. It took till he went missing for Joanne to realize that she loved him too, but now it’s too late. Or is it? Something is following her through the woods and when she spots Christian, she faints.

The previous year, Christian had been bitten and turned by the werewolf Cain. He staged his disappearance and lived in his isolated cabin in the woods because he didn’t feel like he had control over his blood lust and didn’t want to risk harming Joanne. Cain is angered that Christian refuses to join his pack and is always hunting him. With Joanne in the forest, however, Christian must confront the pack to save her from Cain. Not only does he have to fight for their lives, but he will have to risk rejection when he tells her the truth about what he is.

While the basis of this story was good, it just didn’t ring true to me. Even though some of the pack members that he fought had been turned after him making them weaker, the fights seemed to come too easy for him. The two main characters interacted well but it all came together a little too neatly for my taste. I’ve read other things by Aline de Chevigny and enjoyed them and will continue to read her writing, but this one just wasn’t for me.

Luck of The Irish by Aline de Chevigny

Posted under Adult Content, Book Reviews, Fae, Magic, e-books by Becky on Friday 27 June 2008 at 5:17 pm
****½

Dina O’Reilley’s Aunt Caitlin had always told her that when she met her one, she would know him as the green man. When she finds a plastic encased four leaf clover in her soup at a restaurant on St. Patrick’s Day, she calls her waiter over to complain. With it being St. Patrick’s Day, he’s dressed all in green and has the most gorgeous green eyes she’s ever seen. Connor O’Connor is the owner of the Luck Of The Irish restaurant and is stunned when Dina shows him the clover. According to family legend, the clover appears to the first born of each generation to signify that person’s one and only. Whomever the one is has to accept that particular O’Connor willingly. If not, that family member will live their life out alone. Connor’s uncle Devlin was rejected by his one and has turned into a lonely and bitter man. He only married because he got a woman pregnant but she died in childbirth. Devlin’s son Pietro has always been jealous of Connor and is as bitter as his father.

When their hands touch, Connor and Dina find themselves in the Land Of The Mist. A place for the chosen couples to decide their future, it is someplace where only they exist. As Connor and Dina have accepted each other, they take advantage of the privacy to get to know each other better. The next morning they awake to find themselves in Connor’s bed. Dina has mysteriously acquired a clover shaped diamond engagement ring and they both have matching clover tattoos on their hips. They are rudely intruded upon by Pietro though. He is angry and claims that Dina is rightfully his as Connor stole Dina from him at the restaurant. He thinks that Connor is only the oldest by default since his father’s one rejected him. They are also confronted by Dina’s Aunt Caitlin and even though they have accepted each other, they find they need the acceptance of Caitlin as well as Pietro.

This was a short but very engaging story. I was a little taken aback by Dina’s instant acceptance of Connor but came to understand it the more I read. The characters were extremely easy to like and the flow of the story was very smooth. There is a definite potential for another book although I don’t know if one has been written or is planned. I hope so and look forward to reading it if it is written.

Toss Of A Coin by Aline de Chevigny

****

After her beloved Grams passes away, Angelica Richmond is bequeathed one third of her grandmother’s estate. There are three conditions to receiving it though. She has to use the money to further her dreams and also take the pre-arranged vacation to Scotland. The third condition is actually an item; Grams left her a small box that she is not to open until she gets to Scotland.

Once in Scotland, Angelica discovers a beautiful meadow near her hotel with an ancient stone well in the middle of it. Opening the box she finds a note and a very old coin. The note is from Grams and tells Angelica that, if she uses it wisely, the coin will grant her one special wish. Deciding that she couldn’t find a better place to use the coin, she makes her wish, tosses the coin into the well and blacks out.

Upon awakening, Angelica finds herself in an unfamiliar room and in bed with a gorgeous man. She assumes she’s dreaming so she allows herself to go with it and see what happens. When Duncan awakes, he’s just as surprised to find Angelica in his bed but isn’t about to turn down the attentions of a beautiful and willing woman. When Angelica realizes that she’s not dreaming, its time to figure out if she is ready to take a leap of faith to make her wish come true.

I thought this was charming, but a bit on the short side at only sixty-four pages. The characters were very well written and we get a surprisingly large look into their personalities for such a short story. I would have liked a conclusion that didn’t end quite so abruptly, but even with that, I loved this story.

Wet And Wild: Lifemates by Aline de Chevigny

Posted under Adult Content, Book Reviews, Shapeshifters, e-books by Becky on Friday 20 June 2008 at 7:00 am
***

River Maples is a widow living on her own in the middle of nowhere. Preferring the company of the wild animals, she has used her words and her shotgun to run off any men that got it in their mind to come calling. After being cheated on repeatedly by her late husband, River doesn’t have much trust in men.

Benton Chaser is a shapeshifter who prefers to live on his own outside of the society of his Clan. They are Castoridaes, shapeshifters whose animal form is that of a beaver. Still without a mate, Benton spends time keeping company with the lonely wives of the trappers in the area. He is fascinated, obsessed even, with River. His favorite cove is on her land and he goes to her in beaver form often. He attempted to approach her once in his human form but was quickly chased off.

When River goes to the cove one day for a picnic, Benton walks out of the water in his human form. To his surprise, after some questioning by River, he is allowed to accompany her back to her cabin. River is just as surprised by her actions. She knows nothing about him but finds him irresistible. Over the next couple of days, it becomes obvious to Benton that River is his destined mate. River also develops strong feelings for her mysterious visitor but is sure he doesn’t feel the same. When confronted by another Castoridae who claims to be Benton’s mate, he makes it clear that he will never mate anyone but River. He just has to convince River of that and hope that she will accept what he is.

I was intrigued when I realized that the male lead in this story was a werebeaver. I do not think I have ever heard of another anywhere in the paranormal world. However, I didn’t feel that the story lived up to the uniqueness of the concept. It was a quick and easy read and the writing was descriptive but I did not feel that the story itself was all that strong.
