BBB: Can you please share with us how old you were when you wrote your first story?

JC: Unlike a lot of writers, I didn’t start out at the tender age of five. Yeah, sure, I scribbled a few little stories when I was a kid but, frankly, I never considered that real writing. What I do remember doing daily most of my entire life is telling stories in my head. I didn’t try to set them down on paper until I was in my mid-twenties and I only did it then because it was a way to get the stories out of my head. For all the good it did me. The problem is that as soon as one story is down on paper, another one starts taking shape in my head.

M-CB: Getting the story down and finishing the first draft. It’s the hardest but once I know the story is there, I feel much better. It’s very rewarding to have told a whole story from beginning to end.

BBB: What do you find are the most rewarding and most challenging aspects of writing?

DEB: Writing is the most rewarding and challenging aspect of writing for me: that and coming up with snarky non-answers to thoughtful questions. Writing is like getting paid to fall in love, where most of the time you spend agonizing just waiting for it to happen, and then it does like once or twice if you’re lucky. OK, that’s a terrible analogy. It’s really more like holding a baby sparrow, where you have to hold it firmly yet not too hard, (more…)
