Koran T, Captain of the Royal Elite Palace Guards, the highest rank any military waken could achieve, has a job to do. He must find Princess Kali at the Wing Academy, get her out of Ru-Noc and into the blasted Illumrof realm where the humans live. Then, he must take her to a vampire prince’s castle and keep her safe - at all costs. Looks simple enough, but looks can be deceiving, and Koran had no doubt when King Darak personally asked him to watch over Kali, it would be the most difficult assignment he would ever have to face.

Koran has always wanted Kali. Always. So he finds himself between the proverbial rock and hard place. King Darak’s order to guard Kali could not have come at the worst possible time - Beltane, the mating season for all witches and wakens. But even with the nearness of Kali calling him to just revel in Beltane as its peak draws closer, Koran knows he cannot touch her. He is a tainted u-null bred, and to make matters worse, once she found out who his father and mother are, she would never want to see him again.

Kali could hardly believe her parents sent the Captain to get her and whisk her away to a vampire’s castle of all places. What could possibly be going on at home that Koran is so strict about her safety as to take her own powers away from her? It is Beltane! It is time to celebrate! And if Koran will not enjoy Beltane with her, then she will find fun company elsewhere - like outside the castle walls. Besides, what possible trouble could she get into in the mortal realm?

There is definitely more at stake than just their own lives and situations as the plot against the Winslow Witches thickens. Ru-Noc is falling into shambles. The sound of civil war is drawing closer: brother verses brother; father verses son; blood against blood. Whether demon, vampire, witch or waken, the casualties will nonetheless be high.

This installment of the Winslow Witches of Salem will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat. There is truly more to this story than meets the eye as surprise upon surprise is revealed bit by bit. It was as if I was watching the sequences in Witch’s Moon take place rather than just reading it. Of course, along with the visual came the frustration with the heroine when I knew she simply should not head in the direction she was aiming for because life would simply be better if she just stayed still. But then where would our story be without such adventure? Witch’s Moon not only keeps you interested but makes you want more books in the series.

Saylym Winslow has no doubt she is going crazy. She finds herself in the town of Sanctuary, it is like a whole different world, living next door to a woman who believes she is 20,000 years old and a witch to boot. Objects in her house are randomly moving on their own accord and her bed is telling -no, yelling!- at her to stop snoring and keeping it awake at night. A bed has got to get its rest too! To make matters worse, at the shop she owns, “Ye Olde Witch’s Brew Magick Shop,” the items she has for sale do not stop talking to her. And of course to top it, there is Talon, who is just as bonkers as her neighbor. He keeps saying he is a prince and a Waken, whatever that is, and crazy of all crazies, he keeps telling her she is a witch, or a least half-witch and he will claim her. Now, she cannot seem to stop fantasizing about Talon and even worse, maybe even starting to believe him. Oh yes, she definitely is going crazy.

Talon, prince among Wakens, the male witches, is searching for a female witch to claim during the Beltane season. And the first witch he happens to see in Sanctuary, is Saylym. There is something very different about that witch and it is not just the human blood he can smell in her. For one she cannot seem to control her magic. What is even more strange is that he is unable to counter any magic she does. No witch should have that kind of power. And why does she keep denying she’s a witch? Her history and lineage is unknown by all. Where did she come from and how she did get into their realm of Ru-Noc if she did not know how to use her powers? The Waken Guild fears this. She is an Impure and the guild orders Talon to steal her soul. But can he destroy her when he knows she is innocent and her soul pure?

Talon is desperate to claim Saylym as his own as he is to find a way to keep her alive and not directly disobey the guild. Saylym is desperate to bring a sense of normalcy around her and keep her wits about while Talon is nearby. But what the two are not aware of, is that there is a bigger danger than Saylym’s bungling of magic, roaming the lands in and around Sanctuary. They must find a solution and a way to save all witches and Wakens from a terror greater than the Salem witch trials. And to save the future, they must find the key to Saylym’s past.

Witch’s Brew is, without a doubt, a delightful read. The personal history and background that slips in every now and then, teases the reader, gradually giving them a broader insight into the secrets hidden within the Wiccan world of Sanctuary. Also, it is interesting to see the main characters awaken to their true natures and even the steady awareness of their feelings for one another beyond the realm of lust. It is even more interesting to see the motivation behind the antagonists’ desire for revenge and their ever growing thirst for evil. This novel has so many twists yet along with those turns come revelations and surprise that even the ending gives a delicious taste of what is to come. To put it simply, Witch’s Brew is a delectable tale with an element of wit and charm.

Witch’s Heart by Tabitha Shay

What do you do when your soul reattaches itself to your body after you’ve been killed only to wake up far from home and in the Illumrof realm of all places? The human realm? Your magic has not returned to you as of yet and you have no clue how you are to get back home. And you find yourself at the mercies of the one woman who has every right to hate your guts. Hannah Miller, the one woman you share an extraordinary attraction with, but can never be with, because she is an Illumrof. Well, Sage, Waken assassin, finds himself in that exact predicament and has no idea what he is going to do about it.

Darn that Sage! He originally met her to kill her, instead banished her out of the realm of Ru-Noc, land of witches and wakens, out of Sanctuary, and sent her away from the only person she considers family! All because she is human! Now he has the audacity to be here among humans and in need of her help. What on earth was he doing in her realm anyway? And why does he keep telling her he has claimed her? She does not belong to him… no matter how cute he looks in nothing but a towel.

How did Sage get into the Illumrof realm anyway? He knows he has to find a way back home. There is still much danger in Ru-Noc. Now if he could just find a way to keep Hannah with him without getting her killed by the Guild who sent him to kill her in the first place. How did she even get into Ru-Noc when she was a just a mere human anyway? All these questions and so few answers, it is enough to drive any waken mad.

After reading Witch’s Brew, Witch’s Heart was a bit disappointing. If one was to read Witch’s Heart before Witch’s Brew there might be times when the reader might not fully understand the significance of a certain scene or the appearance of a specific character. There is a quick character synopsis before the story begins but even that might still leave the reader a tad bit out of the loop. It just does not have the same depth to the story as its prequel. Witch’s Heart focuses more on the attraction between Sage and Hannah than on the actual storyline. It does give the occasional glimpse into the happenings in Ru-Noc but it does not begin to give more details into the characters’ history until the reader gets towards the middle-end of the story. It just does not have as much character growth as there could have been.

There are good factors to Witch’s Heart that will still keep readers reading. There is a nice twist to the story that will undoubtedly catch the reader unawares. And it does end leaving the reader with a cliffhanger that creates interest and curiosity to read the next book about the witches and wakens in Ru-Noc. To put it plainly, Witch’s Heart is a decent read, it just had the potential to have been better.
