Crossroads by Moira Rogers
Derek Gabriel’s life changed the day he was savagely turned by a rogue werewolf. No longer could he consider the supernatural world - something other members of his family had to deal with - he now is smack dab in it. In the world of werewolves, only those who are born weres have social status within the polite society of the conclave. It’s unfortunate, then, that Derek has fallen in love with the Alpha Heir Apparent to the conclave, Nicole Peyton.
Nick wants nothing to do with the archaic rules of the conclave, but before she can truly get anywhere with her long-standing, unrequited love for Derek, she must rejoin the conclave and play their games to keep her twin sister, Michelle, safe from conclave politics. This means she must leave Derek behind - long enough for Derek to do something only an alpha would do once driven insane by the need to protect his beloved mate.
I knew the obstacles in Nick and Derek’s way were the type to test a person’s mettle, but Crossroads far surpassed the drama I imagined would ensue. It’s bad enough that Nick was committing a major social faux pas by falling in love with a man from the other side of the tracks, but Michelle’s problems grow to epic proportions and unfortunately her status as a seer isn’t enough to keep her safe all on her own. She literally needs Nick’s help to keep it together when all she wants is to settle down to a normal life - something neither sister has ever known.
Derek, being the wonderful and understanding man that he is (a totally smitten one at that), does what he can to help Nick save Michelle, even if it means he can’t be happy either. But then talk of Nick marrying someone in the conclave gets out, and all hell breaks loose in Derek’s mind. What’s a man to do when driven insane with thoughts of the woman he loves with someone else? Pull a crazy stunt that’s so far into left field that it just might work - if everyone can get out alive, that is.
Crossroads was a rollercoaster ride of emotions and events. I laughed and I cried, my happiness at Nick’s chances at a happy future was tempered with sadness for Michelle. And through it all, I discovered that I couldn’t hate Nicole and Michelle’s father for trying to make things work for his daughters within the conclave. We really got a glimpse of how difficult the conclave’s demands were on him, how much it broke his heart to keep one of his beloved daughters under lock and key because of his people’s fear over her powers. It was both a relief and a frustration to realize that though he had a heart inside that powerful alpha body of his; Daddy Payton’s political power could only extend so far.
I heartily recommend Crossroads to anyone who likes a good Romeo and Juliet story, complete with dramatic life and death events. Moira Rogers does a great job of twisting a compelling story and the reader’s emotions into a steel grip. I do advise, however, that you be in a solid place emotionally before reading since the story is pretty intense. Here’s to hoping Michelle finally gets her happily ever after. 5 Tombstones
