People are dying. Nightmares are becoming reality.

Michael can not escape his fate; he has tried for millennia, but now his brother Shane has emerged once again. This time, Shane will force Michael and others like him to join him and serve the greater cause. Michael is tired of running and hiding. He will stand against Shane and fight against his destiny and for the woman he loves, the woman Shane must have. Will Michael find redemption or will he take his preordained place beside his brother and bring an end to mankind?

This dark fantasy takes us back through time, thousands of years, to experience the horrors of warfare, plague, betrayal and murder. We visit these times through the eyes of several characters but most notably Michael, a poor soul who fights his destiny at every step. He believes there must be a way to achieve salvation and atone for traits he was born with, traits which make him a pawn in the game of a supreme evil. “No, you were born of the same as I. We’re simply used as pawns by the others to fulfill our own doomed destinies for their enjoyment,” he blurted.

The imagery is brilliant, creating chilling visions that haunt the reader. Gloria, a woman bombarded by sightings of demons and death is crippled by anxiety. As Gloria stands on the beach, a handsome man approaches. “Without warning, his smile disappeared. His face contorted as if an attack of some kind was taking over his body. His clear eyes turned red. His chin took on a dark and elongated form as his mouth widened, and his teeth turned black and razor-sharp. Gloria gasped.” The slow, deliberate revelation of her existence and torment is written in a way that creates tension in the reader and makes you want to skip ahead, but you must resist because the reveal is so worth the wait.

I recommend Cemetery Gates to all those who loves fantasy and horror. The characters and plot are well developed, and the urgency to figure out the connection between the characters makes this hard to put down.

    Hidden Shadows by Maryann Paige

A complex story of evil lurking in a (formerly) quiet Hudson Valley town, Hidden Shadows is a frightening tale with an interesting cast. What starts as a freak tornado and one small child’s experiences with mysterious shadow entities begins to involve more and more people. The various people weave in and out of one another’s lives as the malevolence plaguing the town becomes more and more violent.

I really did like this book and it had a lot of promise, but I felt that it had a better development than resolution. This could be intentional to allow for a sequel, but a better conclusion could have tied all of the elements of the novel together into a more cohesive story. The characters are truly sympathetic, and they all have great backstory - the audience can feel with them.

All in all, I think the author has potential and this could actually be continued into a series. I wouldn’t mind reading more, perhaps from the characters’ futures.
