Battle of the Network Zombies by Mark Henry

Posted under Adult Content, Book Reviews, Ghosts, Shapeshifters, Urban Fantasy, Vampires, Zombies by Hockeyvamp on Tuesday 9 February 2010 at 3:06 am
*****

Social elite zombies, lawyer vampires, wood nymph talk show hosts, prepubescent pigtailed reapers and various other bizarre characters come together in another very unique and at times (OK, most of the time) riotous mystery adventure…oh, and did I forget to mention a whole stable of Yeti strippers? Be prepared for off the wall humor that leaves no taboo subject alone as Mark Henry lets us drop in on the trials of life (or afterlife of sorts) of zombie Amanda Feral as she leads a very eclectic group of creatures in investigating a murder mystery that fell into her lap (or at least whats left of her lap). Think Agatha Cristie meets Shaun of the Dead meets Reality XXX Game Show…

Amanda has hit a low time in her life, cash flow is low, as in getting her car repo’d low and almost to the point that she might have to go to her mom, the vampire strip club owner, for help. When the very popular reality television personality and crooner, Johnny Birch, comes to her with an offer for her to participate in his next reality show, her boss gives her the incentive to accept his offer. The wood nymph was known for more than his show, Tapping Birch’s Syrup, and meeting him at her mother’s strip club after he had acquainted himself with one of the strippers just drove home the reality of the rumors about him. Despite her misgivings about the man, she needed the cash and agreed to be one of the celebrity judges for Supernatural TV’s latest reality game show, America’s Minions. Amanda would, of course, be their Simon.

Amanda’s life as a zombie was never a smooth sailing, but to make matters worse, before heading into the mansion that was to house both the contestants, the judges and the actual set the contests would be played out on, Amanda and her boyfriend Scott have a big fight and he breaks up with her. What was with her luck? Now no car, no boyfriend, no money and her BFF had somehow wiggled her way onto the set and hopefully onto Johnny himself, eeeeewh.

Now, stuck in the mansion with too many off the wall creatures to mention, (OK, to mention a few: a largess mature voodoo priestess, a crossdressing werewolf, a hairy yeti stripper…I did say only a few) there wasn’t much to do but dwell on dealing with the break up of her relationship with the sexy werewolf (OK, it’s not like he won’t take her back someday….. right?), and facing the possibility that not only would she loose everything she still owned if the television show didn’t pan out but she might also have to face going home to live with the parental figure Ethel (again eeeeeewh).

Amanda and Wendy have to come up with a few ideas fast when Johnny is found dead - possibly murdered - and they take it upon themselves to use said murder as part of their own show and see if they can flush out the killer on film, assuring them of a ratings winner, cash flow and the renewed celebrity status she was due. With a houseful of possible suspects that seemingly had a taste of Johnny themselves, suspects were plentiful, but when the players in the game begin to drop out because they had dropped dead themselves, the list gets narrower but the tension and suspense expand tremendously.

When Ethel’s brothel becomes another casualty to the mystery, the stakes get higher, and after a visit to the precious reapers and their recuperative day spa, the group focuses on flushing out the true killer and finding the truth behind the mysterious relationships Johnny Birch found himself entangled in before his death. In true murder mystery fashion, the culprit is revealed and Amanda and her friends capture it all on film, ready for the next really big reality show phenomenon or possibly becoming a reality television shocker when they become targets of the killer or killers themselves.

Battle Of The Network Zombies left me holding my side in pain…physical pain from laughing so hard that I think I tore something important. The book should come with warnings to wear a fat belt to hold in parts that might rupture from said laughing and that readers should have full control of their bladder at all times.

This, unfortunately, was my first taste of Mark Henry’s written humor;it will NOT be my last. I had been warned before that to read a Mark Henry book you would be committing yourself to a lifetime addiction to the brilliant, snarky, raw and sometimes blue humor, but I scoffed at that warning. I am now fully prepared to commit myself (no, not that way) to the addiction again and again. Mark’s footnotes throughout the book are more than an added bonus…they provide the reader with a true incite into the mind that brought us the amazing Amanda Feral. Do NOT miss this book, I repeat: Do NOT miss out on putting Battle Of The Network Zombies on your bookshelf forever as the written word within will no doubt stay with you forever anyway.

Road Trip of the Living Dead by Mark Henry

The fearsome threesome is back in Road Trip of the Living Dead. When Amanda gets a letter stating that her mother is dying, her first instinct is to pitch the letter and forget about it. After all, what did her mother ever do for her? Wendy and Gil appeal to the softer side of Amanda’s conscience. When things go wrong with a client in Gil’s new resurrection business, off they go to the middle of nowhere to pay one last visit to the woman who gave birth to Amanda. Along the way, they encounter some unusual characters. And of course, they also manage to encounter more trouble. Will Amanda be able to keep from bashing in her mother’s head with a bedpan? Will she be able to retain her youthful good looks while in the middle of danger?

I have to admit, I had bought Happy Hour of the Damned about two days before meeting Mark Henry at RT last year. It was nowhere near the top of my reading list, but when I came home, I sat down and started to read it. As I read the first chapter, I was not sure I wanted to keep reading the book, but by the time I finished it, I was glad I did. I knew I could not wait until he finished the next book. To find out that it would not come out until the following year was pure torture. Imagine my pleasant surprise when I got my hands on a copy for review. I loved it! Road Trip of the Living Dead is definitely worth 5 tombstones.

Amanda Feral is not your typical zombie and if it were not for her eating habits, you would never guess that she was anything but a diva. Road Trip is very snarky and, at times, very funny. Mr. Henry uses footnotes throughout the book as well as playlists and various other little unexpected surprises. By the time you finish the book, there is almost no way that you can dislike Amanda, Wendy and Gil, even if they do seem shallow and selfish at times. I do caution the faint of heart to read this a little bit at a time, as reading about zombies does tend to be a little…gross at times. Pick up Mark Henry and give his series a try. Road Trip is a fantastic read and you will not be disappointed.

Book Excerpt: “Celebrity party girl Amanda Feral is back from the dead, and hungrier than ever for a good time. With her zombie gal pal Wendy and vampy gay sidekick Gil, this stone cold fox is dressed to kill, on the prowl, and ready to take a big juicy bite out of Seattle’s supernatural nightlife. But what’s a zombie chick to do when her ‘Mommie Dearest’ gets sick? If you’re Amanda Feral, you can either ignore the wicked old witch - or bury the past by visiting Ethel before she kicks it. Amanda’s not thrilled about the idea of crossing three states just to be criticized. But Wendy, who’s always looking for fresh meat, is up for the adventure. And Gil, who just launched his ‘luxury’ resurrection business, needs to disappear because a pissed-off client is out for his blood. First, they pack their stiletto pumps and plasma into a skeevy rattrap on wheels that used to be a Winnebago. Then, with a little help from a Korean-ghost hood ornament, a masochist named Fishhook, and a slew of ‘moderately accurate’ psychics, they hit the highway - their way. Of course, they’ll have to navigate past some neo-Nazi skinheads, a horny dust devil, a hunky werewolf cop (who could pass for an underwear model) and an unsightly horde of supermarket shoppers. But for this glamorous gang of ghouls this trip is about to take a dangerous detour that could give road kill a brand new meaning.”

Happy Hour of the Damned by Mark Henry

****½

Another day, another book read. Today’s review is about a new book by Mark Henry a fellow Seattleite. Amazingly enough the book is set in Seattle as well. Ok not amazing, but cool none the less! Happy Hour of the Damned is an urban fantasy about modern day and oh so hip celebrity ghoul (read zombie) Amanda Feral and her adventures as one of Seattle’s newly undead. You really have to admit Feral is a perfect last name for a zombie!

Let me start by saying that zombies are really not my thing, and more than once felt myself fighting back a dry heave, upon reading some of the flesh eating, putrefying commentary. There was a line about a guy munching on an ear like a potato chip that almost did me in LOL. Give me a vampire and a little blood sucking any day! Pus and exploding bowels…not so much. It gives the phrase “no it doesn’t taste like chicken” a whole new meaning. Thankfully there are also vampires, werewolves, and a few succubi involved in the storyline. Despite my initial squeamishness, I dug in and really got into this groovy tale.

I think none of you will be surprised that Starbuck’s is featured and is at the center of a plot for global destruction. I commented to Mark that I would never look at bucky’s the same after reading this great book. Our local Safeway barista really has an undead look to her gaze. <shudder>

Amanda is a hip and sassy undead fashionista with a skin care regimen to make Liz Taylor proud. Really, even I learned some things from her!

This book was a slower read for me than usual. for the most part I can knock out a book in just a few hours. One thing that is different that slowed me down were a lot of footnotes. Pretty much on every page. But these weren’t your regular footnotes denoting resources, but a running commentary on whatever was going on. So, you have to read them to get the deeper nuances of some of the humor Mark presents. Since my normal Ellen Woodhead Sped Redding course mode of reading so fast I barely see the pages move wasn’t working, I found myself forgetting the footnotes and then remembering and having to go back. It isn’t critical that you read them, but they definitely add another dimension.

The humor presented in this book is definitely scathing and razor sharp. I pride myself on being fairly quick witted (no commentary from the Peanut Gallery needed thank you very much), but even I missed a few things that were thrown in, only to realize later what I had missed. So, it was good for a fun read, during and after. I am still chuckling about a few things. Plus I have a few new cocktail recipes to boot!

While I won’t be going out and digging up (ha ha) any new sources of Zombie reading material, I cannot WAIT for the next installment in the Amanda Feral chronicles “Road Trip of the Living Dead”.
