Interview:
Hello Marilu, and welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today! Some of our readers may not realize that Marilu Mann is actually comprised of a team of two writers, Arwen and Cai.
BBB: What do you find the most challenging aspect of writing as team versus individuals?
MM: Rachel, thank you so much for taking the time to do this interview. We are really tickled to be here. Probably the toughest challenge is remembering to communicate with one another. After thirty years of friendship, sometimes we make assumptions about where the story is going. Another challenge is in the writing environment. Cai likes music going and Arwen needs silence. Luckily we live in different states so that works out. When we are in the same house, Cai uses earphones or Arwen goes to another room.
We’ve always told each other these stories. Long car trips were accentuated by us playing our various characters and putting them through their paces. We have a series in the works that is actually about some of our earliest imaginary friends.
BBB: What is the most rewarding aspect personally of writing for you as individuals?
Arwen: I like meddling in other peoples lives. I will make a great old maiden aunt with too many cats some day. You know… the one who sits on the porch and tells everyone how to run their lives? By writing, I can get my hand in early and not drive my family to murder–mine!
Cai: Getting these ideas and thoughts that float around in my head out of my head and down on paper. I love having people react - either positively or negatively - to my writing, so having those responses is very rewarding.
BBB: What made you decide to start writing or decide you wanted to become an author?
MM: I think the answer is the same for both of us. From the first time we knew that words put together could tell stories… we wanted to do that. We’ve both been writing since we were very young. Our fateful meeting in 1976 launched a friendship that would withstand many things including divorce, childbirth, the death of parents, and so much more. We began writing with a serious eye towards publication in 2001.
BBB: What do you feel are the benefits of the new electronic readers such as Kindle
to the environment?
Arwen: The obvious answer is that it will help save the trees in the long run. What some folks don’t realize is that it will help save them as well. I mean think about it. If you have to pack up a shoe box of memory disks vs. twelve bookshelves…won’t your back and your moving helpers be much happier? And memory disks last longer. I have a paperback in my collection that I can’t even read for fear of it falling apart. It is the very first Harlequin romance I ever owned. And I wish I could reread it for old time’s sake, but at this point, it is fragile. It was printed in 1969. I’ve bought two copies of it since that first copy took an unfortunate swim in a pool. I wish I could download it onto my e-reader!
Cai: There are so many studies going on about whether or not e-book readers are in fact a boon to the environment. I believe the overall consensus right now is that though they’re made of plastic (for the most part) they are, in the long run much better for the environment than cutting down trees and printing books. Don’t get me wrong, I still have a TON of books, but I find that when I’m purchasing NEW books, I tend to look on the e-book sites first and purchase there to download to my e-reader.
BBB: What impact do electronic readers create on the bottom line for Authors in the end? Do you feel they have a negative impact or positive, or no impact at all that you can see?
Arwen: Sadly, there is a very negative impact. People upload e-books to so-called free file sharing sites. Basically they are stealing. Technology is coming that will make files proprietary which is sad because then you will have to have the right reader to enjoy your favorite books. But it is what publishers have had to do in order to combat the unethical among us. For the record, I feel the same way about copying a CD and giving it to someone. I’m stealing from the artist when I do that.
Cai: Also, let’s face it. E-books are still “new and strange” to many people. They want that physical BOOK in their hands. I’ve had several friends tell me that they’ll buy our book when it comes out in print - then when I tell them they might have to wait a year, they look at me like I’ve lost my mind.
BBB: Your book Changing Times that has recently been released by Ellora’s Cave is based in New Orleans. Does one of you live there, or is there another reason you chose that specific setting for the book?
MM: We are both from Louisiana. Cai was born there and Arwen moved there as a child. While we are from north Louisiana, New Orleans has always had such a mysterious quality. And hey! If you were a shifter, wouldn’t you want to live there? Also, New Orleans is one of those cities that just inspires paranormal stories - ask any writer who’s been there - you can’t visit that city without FEELING it - whether you believe yourself to be sensitive to the paranormal or not.
BBB: Who wrote the SUPER steamy sex scene between Tony and Carly or was it a joint effort?
MM: If Cai’s family is reading this article, Arwen wrote ALL the sex scenes. If Arwen’s family is reading, then it was definitely Cai. And that’s as much as we are saying!
BBB: What do you find to be the hardest part of writing as a team versus as an individual?
MM: Being long distance writing partners has its drawbacks in that we can’t get an immediate answer. You have to wait for the email to go through or the phone to be picked up. You can’t make an arbitrary decision and not have to answer for it. One of the rewards of that is that when we have to defend our reason for a particular plot point, we often come up with an even better one. Our website is GREATMTA for Great Minds Think Alike!
BBB: What’s next in the Lusting Wild series? Will there be more books?
MM: Oh yes! The second book in the Lusting Wild Series features the bad boy of Changing Times. Malcolm Slade, gets his in Lusting Wild 2: Changing Hearts. He has to completely rethink who and what he is in order to survive. He meets a Cajun treateusse (healer) who shows him what it means to truly trust someone. In Changing Times, he tries to destroy Tony and Carly but ends up changed when he witnesses how they love one another. We knew we had to redeem Slade.
BBB: What other paranormal projects does Marilu Mann have up their sleeve for the rest of the year and heading into 2009?
MM: We are working on book four of the Lusting Wild series which is about a character you meet in book three which is Micah’s story. Micah’s story is on our editor’s desk right now. Then there is our Archangels detective series where each has a very unique gift that they must control or it could destroy them. We are also working on the Seven Sisters series. Seven Fae sisters ho have to find their one true love while fighting off the dark Fae and saving the world. Hey! It’s all in a day’s work, right?
BBB: What is your favorite food? (Readers there may be a test on this later)
Arwen: I love shrimp or chicken Creole. Make it hot and sweet (like Tony and Carly’s story) and you have my full attention!
Cai: Pasta - I love pasta - any type, any style, sauce is irrelevant, other toppings are irrelevant, though one of my favorite things is to combine shrimp with my pasta with a little white sauce…YUM<g>
BBB: What is your favorite paranormal book of all time?
Arwen: Wow! That’s such a hard question. Usually it is the last one I read. LOL! I have a notoriously bad memory. I think I’d have to choose Dragon Heat
by Allyson James. It is such a different take on a shifter story. Really liked the sequel as well, The Black Dragon
, but Dragon Heat
is one that I will read again!
Cai: I’m a HUGE fan of Sherry Kenyon & JR Ward - but there’s no way I could pick just one of their books.
BBB: If you could be any paranormal creature, what would it be and why?
Arwen: I’d be a mermaid. I love the ocean and for once in my life, I’d have a voice as nice as Cai’s singing voice!
Cai: And I’d go straight for the were-world. Probably more a were-cat like our hero, Tony, than a were-wolf.
BBB: Since you are working the shape shifter angle in your current book, are there any plans to do a vampire or other type of creature type series?
MM: We do have a vampire story started, one we continue to go back to from time to time - it’s also set in New Orleans but is still very much in the “planning” stage. One or the other of us will become “obsessed” with a particular story and hound the other until we’ve finished it. Our next release from Ellora’s Cave isn’t paranormal in any sense of the word, but it is a super-sexy novella involving a re-appropriations specialist (read: thief) and a collector of Japanese art. It’s out in September from Ellora’s Cave - part of their Jewels of the Nile series. More details are on our website for anyone who’s interested. http://www.greamta.com
