Twins of Darkness by Lisa Lane

*****

Karen is coming to terms with being the mother of the twins. Andy seems like a normal human child; Anna, however, is a bit different. Karen has met her daughters’ Doppler, a uniquely innocent and yet worldly Astral being. But can she give them everything they need?

Jason is the lover and donor of Karen. He has agreed to help her raise the twins. He is proud to be her lover and blood donor and is pleased to act as the father for the twins. But is he prepared for what life, or the twins, may bring?

Karen is determined to raise the twins as close to normal as a vampire can raise human children. She is willing to move to the suburbs. She is willing to get a job. She is willing to deal with Billy’s family when they come to call. But is she ready for her children to become preteens? Or to face her past?

I have enjoyed the ride that Lisa Lane has taken me on with the first two books. But this third book took me beyond enjoyment. Through the varied twists and turns, she has offered a world beyond the imagination. The development of the twins is a reminder of how children grow into individuals of their own making despite how we may try to guide them; we can only hope that they will take the lessons we teach them. Ms. Lane has managed to entice, entrap, and thrill us with her latest installment in the Darkness and Night series, and I have enjoyed it thoroughly.

Cosmic Orgasm by Lisa Lane

****½

Karen is pregnant, in love with a dead guy, and on the run. Could life get any worse? How about having a strange cult who wants to take away your own thoughts? Who want to control your mind? Who want to claim your unborn children? What would you do to protect those who are not yet born?

Billy is trying to keep his love for Karen alive, regardless of the fact that he is dead and stuck on the astral plane. But the longer that he is there, the more he feels himself changing. Does she still love him?

Karen is pregnant and on the run. The only time she can see the man she loves, who is the father of her babies, is when she is asleep. When does living for your dreams become too real? Will the people that she meets on her run from the cult of Vampires teach her enough to protect herself? Or will they just become bitter memories?

Lisa Lane picked up right where she left off with this emotionally packed sequel. I actually enjoyed Karen in this book more than the first. She grew not just in her vampiric self but as a woman and a soon to be mother. Her journeys kept me lounging on the couch, unable to put the book down and leave her to face the atrocities she was going though alone. There were actually a few spots in the plot that I was not expecting, and that made the tale even that much better. If you are looking for a new vampire series with a heroine that doesn’t have the easy life but keeps on going, then this is the series for you. Karen is one vampire that you won’t forget!

Lust in Space by Lisa Lane

An erotic romp in the vein of classic science-fiction, Lust in Space is a ton of fun. On one hand, it’s almost cheesy, but that’s half the beauty of it: it’s like serial “B”-movie science fiction, with the occasional moral quandary and a lot of sexuality - the ship, Pandora’s Hope, just might run on erotica.

The various crew and alien guests that Pandora’s Hope gathers on its exploratory mission spend most of the book coming to terms with their own growth and their interpersonal relationships, and also end up safeguarding the ship against alien invaders, sex-crazing plagues, and technological issues.

I enjoyed how the author was able to expand all of the crew’s characters and liked the way she used shifting perspectives to allow this. My only complaint was that the plotlines were good enough that they could have been expanded much more rather than employed to serve as something to paste together the sex. This is a great story, and I hope to hear more from the bold crew of Pandora’s Hope.

The Darkness and the Night: Blood and Coffee by Lisa Lane

***½

Karen has finished school and is taking a break to spend her summer with her family at their summer house before starting her own life - and possibly get started on her Great American Novel. She is also going to get to spend some time with her father, after his long incarceration in the mental institute. But when she gets to the house before the rest of her family, things take a strange turn…and not necessarily for the better.

Vampires are not real, they are just one of her father’s delusions, or so Karen believes until she manages to beat her family to their summer home and has a strange encounter with a stranger. When she wakes from what she assumed was a horrific dream, she comes to realize that maybe her father was right. Vampires do exist, and now she is one of them. What do you do when you are what someone you care about fears and kills? Run!

Billy is helping his father take revenge on the man who killed a member of their family. But in the act of exacting their revenge, Billy meets Karen and realizes maybe revenge is not all it is cracked up to be. When the feisty female fights for her family, and then herself, he realizes that there may be more to the world than the night and blood.

This is a strangely compelling tale of blood, love, lust, and betrayal. While it seems slightly choppy in some places, I was compelled to continue reading by the obvious emotions and raw talent of Lisa Lane. Though reminiscent of a Young Adult novel in the way the story is told, the sensual scenes make it quite obvious that it is an adult content tale. The adult-oriented scenes are earthy with a violent undertone that may make some readers uncomfortable. Please be forewarned there is a rape scene within these pages; so if that is an issue that you do not want to contend with, then this may not be the book for you. However, overall, I found this to be an interesting and different tale of vampires. One that has me intrigued as to where Ms. Lane is going with this obvious start to a new series.
