Wednesday’s Child - Marked by Tears by L. Shannon

Posted under Adult Content, Book Reviews, Demons, Vampires, e-books by Julie on Thursday 24 December 2009 at 1:10 pm
**

This brief tale starts out by telling the reader all about what’s going on…but it rarely simply pushes the reader directly into the action. The author uses that same unfortunate distancing technique till the end, which makes for a less than invigorating read. Demon Kry’n and human Jane have a powerful attraction to one another and a passel of problems standing between them and both abundant sex and true love. While they overcome their obstacles after a fashion, it is difficult to muster up enough compassion for these poorly-drawn characters to really care.

The voices of both characters waver throughout, neither one ever gaining enough personality to stand out and indeed even flip-flopping wildly enough to wonder how well the author knew Kry’n and Jane. Kry’n wobbles between sounding like an ancient being prone to making sweeping statements and a modern dude lusting after a chick. Jane simply never has enough resolution to morph into a fully-delineated character rather than the cardboard figure of barely-recovering grief that she is. I found myself skimming pages and forcing myself to go back and read them more closely in case I had missed any important information.

Most distressing of all is the writing, which is somewhat awkward and bland, and the weak plot. There’s a basically good guy, a bad guy who lives by strict rules, a flat heroine, lots of sex, and then there’s just…the end. The sex is well-written and pretty hot, although some may be put off by the sex-and-blood theme (though some vampire-lovers out there may find it quite titillating, of course!). However, the sex is so plentiful and the character development so minimal that it reads like a story about hot lovin’ rather than about two people connecting deeply through physical and emotional communion, which is clearly what the author attempted to portray.

Chance of a Lifetime by L. Shannon

The perfect gift: one hunk of an ex-lover wrapped in cuffs and a red leather bow set in a snow filled corner of Hell…

But will the gift be accepted in the spirit it was given? Or will the gift tear their love apart?

Josh is a hopeless romantic and human. Brandon is a jealous ex lover and half demon. Chance is full demon with a voracious sexual appetite.

L. Shannon’s aphoristic fantasy of pleasure and dominating passion will light up your evening. Her characters are all male but yet willing to bend their masculine outlook to satisfy their lovers. I recommend this for anyone who has ever wondered what it would be like to have your new lover and your ex lover in the same bed and willing to do anything to please you.

Games of Chance by L. Shannon

Chance loves Josh yet he knows that Josh still thinks about his former lover, Brandon. With their first anniversary coming, Chance ponders long and hard about what to get his love as a gift. He decides that Brandon, in a bow, would be the perfect gift. However, he needs to convince Brandon that he is not an evil creature and there is nothing to be fearful of. Will he convince Brandon to accept him in time for the big anniversary?

I give this book 4 tombstones. It was a well developed storyline. I also think that L. Shannon does a great job of character development. The reader gets a good feel for who Brandon is in Games of Chance. I half expected to see Josh make an appearance, but Brandon and Chance’s relationship is the focus of this book. I have only read one other of the books in the Chance series, but I think I may have to go back and read the other three books that make up this series. Chance is an intriguing character, and I want to learn more about his and Josh’s relationship after reading this latest book in the series. I would probably recommend reading the series in the order in which it is written as it will make more sense. If you enjoy m/m D/s romances, then this is just the book for you.

Book Blurb: “What does a demon give his mortal lover for their one-year anniversary?

Chance knows exactly what Josh wants — his former lover, Brandon. The three can be happy together, but only if Brandon is willing to share… All Chance has to do is push Brandon to the limits — and prove he’s worth the risk.

The perfect gift. That’s what Chance needs. And in this case that elusive item would be a silly, reluctant mortal gift-wrapped with a big bow.”

Cravings by L. Shannon

As a faceless foe threatens the vampires of the moon colony Acacia, Caitlin, their virgin queen, has been having visions that might lead them to salvation. Her gift (or curse) of prescience has been guiding her towards the werewolves in their keeping, and she knows she needs to convince this hostile pair to aid her. Unfortunately, Rossitor and Jemson Silvis, in return for their allegiance, demand from her the one thing she has kept her own: Her Body, Her Pleasure, Her Submission, Her Obedience, Her Nights.

The third installment in the Acacia series by L. Shannon picks up on the introduction made in the last pages of “Acacia II: Blindsided”. The characters of Caitlin, Ross, and Jem are well crafted, and I enjoyed their flaws as much as their strengths. I was a bit disappointed that the intrigue was a little predictable and that we didn’t learn more of the briefly touched upon Silvis Pack and history of Caitlin, but overall I think this is my favorite so far in the series. L. Shannon has left this story open for a sequel and I, for one, can’t wait to see how this story continues. Another Chance by L. Shannon

After Chance saved Josh’s life, one thing led to another. Josh planned for the perfect weekend in the mountains. The only problem? Chance is a demon. When Josh’s former lover shows up, Josh is painfully reminded of that fact. Brandon is stunned to find out that Josh left him for another man, let alone a demon. After Brandon leaves, Josh starts to second guess himself. Will Chance be able to give Josh what he wants for Christmas?

I give this book 4 tombstones. The story was sweet and somewhat heartbreaking at the same time. Chance sounds like a sexy and exciting lover, but I felt sympathy for Brandon as well. Josh is soft-hearted, but I was still a little surprised at Josh’s doubt in his decision and the way the story ended, but I hope that Ms. Shannon will go back and revisit her characters someday. I would love to read what happens to Josh, Chance and Brandon. If you enjoy M/m action and are looking for something quick and spicy, then pick up Another Chance in the Gingersnaps series. Ms. Shannon’s contribution to the series is stimulating.

Book Blurb: “Worlds apart…

It’s stupid to want to spend Christmas with a demon, right? Even if he is your lover. Trouble is, Josh is an incurable romantic — at least when it comes to this particular demon. All Josh wants for Christmas is another chance…”

Snowbound: A Snowball’s Chance by L. Shannon

****

Buried under an enormous pile of snow and unable to get out, Josh has no doubt his time is up. But just when he was about to give up trying to dig himself out, he finds a glowing, sexy man standing before him. Could it be an angel? He can only wish!

Chance is a “last chance” demon and he has decided to give Josh the opportunity to get a “Get Out of Hell Free” card. Of course, Josh has to earn it first, and to do that, he’s got to satisfy Chance in more ways than one…and time is running up.

Snowbound: A Snowball’s Chance is raw sexuality. To put it simply, this short was meant to be erotic and it definitely got the job done.

Walking Death’s Edge by L. Shannon

Bryck, the commander of the Anom’tan unit, came to the scene seeking Maya. Bryck always had problems in controlling his death magic, but when he touches Maya, he is surprised. His magic does not affect her, and she intrigues him. She brings peace to his power and his heart, but will they make it in time to save Flayvor?

Walking Death’s Edge is absolutely fabulous! All the mysteries and questions shall be answered in this final book. All characters are joined in this book with ménage a trios and a sex magic ritual. It’s wonderful to see demons have their own happy ending.

Now that the Anom’tan unit have more information to find the one responsible for the kidnapping of their team member, Mayce and his mate Spyce are ordered to find Dante, the owner of the Sundown Club, famous for its BDSM. Dante is willing to help them in exchange for three things. Will he be strong enough to survive the sex dominating by two Synn demons?

Another cliffhanger is waiting at the end of this story. Even though this is the third book in the series, it has all the same bloodthirsty, intense, wild sex as the first two books. In  Walking At Sundown, L. Shannon introduces us to the world of BDSM. Her books never ceases to amaze me as they are all unique in their own way with different sexual approaches.

Walking In Memories by L. Shannon

Twin brothers Chayse and Rayce were given a task to find the information needed to find Flayvour. The person who holds the key is Clarice. When they find her, her will was broken and she was wounded. Her memory of the incident was brutally taken from her, and her mind left twisted, hollow and empty. It is up to the brothers to reach out to her and heal her to gain the lost memories. But what they they don’t expect is the strong attraction between them.

Walking In Memories is a continuation from the first book Walking with Synn. As it is closely related to the first book, it is recommended to read all the books in the series in order. This book is not for the faint heart as it contains menage a trois, biting, sucking, and lots and lots of wild sex - in the shower, in an alley and even in the bedroom.  L. Shannon left me breathless and wanting more. Walking In Memories is as good as the first book, and I surely can’t wait to read the sequels.

Walking with Synn by L. Shannon

Barely alive after being ambushed, Sayvor is found weak and in pain. His twin brother has been kidnapped right in front of his eyes and he cannot remember what exactly occurred during the kidnapping. He begins to grow weaker and weaker as the anchor to his soul has been taken away from him. He has lost the connection between himself and his brother that ensures his survival. His memory is important as it is the only way to find out who took Flayvor and how. Aware that he needs to gain enough strength for him to remember, his demon friends seek help from a paranormal psychologist, Sasha Washington. As a Synn demon, the only way for him to have enough strength to remember is through sexual pleasure, and a lot of it.

Wow!! This book will leave you breathless and make you hunger for more of her work. L. Shannon has a way that makes you stick your nose in the book and read it straight till the end. It is definitely a recommended read.

Acacia: Abducting Aeron by L. Shannon

Posted under Adult Content, Book Reviews, Futuristic, Sci-Fi, Vampires, e-books by Sarai on Monday 22 December 2008 at 10:28 pm
**½

A vampire with a mission, Aeron is a spy for the Acacia moon colony and is determined to save the man who had once done the vampires a great boon on pain of his life. He has since disappeared after hinting at trouble with the blood supply. Helia had offered to become a contact for the Resistance in an effort to discover more about her father, but now she can’t help the feelings she is developing for this near stranger and is done dancing around the attraction between her and Aeron. One bigoted older sister later and Aeron and Helia find themselves in dire straits with the possibility of their new love in jeopardy.

I found this story rather hard to get into; the setting of it is interesting, but the characters just didn’t reach out and grab me. The character situations and emotions came across faintly soap opera-like, even for their unusual setting, and there was some repetitiveness with the thoughts and dialogue that rather annoyed me. By far, my favorite aspect of this story was the Rahla and Acacia and then Reapers and Resistance dynamic, and I highly suggest reading the brief background of Rahla and Acacia that can be found here http://www.lshannon.net/Acacia.html before reading this story; it adds some depth to the setting and a brief explanation as to why Aeron and Helia are facing some of the hardships they are.

Acacia: Blindsided by L. Shannon

Posted under Adult Content, Book Reviews, Futuristic, GLBT, Sci-Fi, Vampires, e-books by Sarai on Monday 22 December 2008 at 8:53 am
****

For years, Blake has restrained himself around his assistant and slave, Dash. Dash may no longer be the orphaned boy Blake had claimed as a servant, but he is still very young indeed when compared to Blake’s own three hundred and twelve years, and Blake is not willing to risk their relationship by acting on his desires. In one fell swoop, with the decision to test possible tainted blood on himself, he will erase the restraint that has kept him in check for years. Dash has compassion for many a tortured vampire, but in truth, only one of the undead matters to him, and that is his master. When his master’s dangerous decision puts them both in jeopardy, he is willing to do whatever it takes to save his master and hopefully the moon colony of Acacia as well. He just wishes it hadn’t taken poison to finally get a response from Blake after years of offering his blood and body.

I enjoyed this addition to the Acacia series far more then it’s predecessor, the characters are better formed and their emotions and dilemmas are more compelling. The brutality of the first erotic encounter in this story is only offset by Dash’s willingness, and I think fans of M/M and BDSM will enjoy this story’s eroticism. As this story progresses, we get more of a fill in on Acacia and Acacia’s vampire/slave culture that I found greatly intriguing and hope to see more of soon. There is also the introduction of Caitlin and the werewolves, which could prove to be quite interesting. Though Abducting Aeron leads into this story, it isn‘t a necessity read before reading this installment; however, I would still suggest reading the brief history found here http://www.lshannon.net/Acacia.html prior to starting this.

Heatstroke: A Second Chance by L. Shannon

Posted under Adult Content, Book Reviews, Demons, GLBT, e-books by Lyda on Friday 26 September 2008 at 7:34 am
***

Ever since Chance met this one human, his nightly dreams have been taken over. How can Chance act like a proper demon when Josh has continuously taken over his thoughts? If Chance had another opportunity to meet with Josh, he is sure he can exorcise Josh from his mind and thoughts completely. Then again, there is only one way to find out.

A Second Chance has more heat and raw sexuality in its short read than any full length novel. The only disappointment I truly had with the read was that it hinted at a bigger story and did not expand to let the readers know the motivation behind what is really going on. There were simply a lot of questions that could be asked like: What is a Synn Demon? Why and how did Chance and Josh originally meet? Understandably it was a short story, nonetheless, it left a lot of questions unanswered.
