This is the entry in the Mates of the Guardian series, and unfortunately, I haven’t read the first book, but trust me, after reading this one, I will be picking up the first one. This novella was very well written, and I thoroughly enjoyed the plot. The intimate scenes were tender and loving, something that you wouldn’t expect from a man with a “beast’ in him that needs to feed.

Donovan is a Hunter from a distant planet. His job is to track down people and renegades. The interesting part is that these renegades can not only traipse through different solar systems but also through time itself, which makes his job very difficult. What makes matters worse is that he’s pretty sure he won’t find a mate because he’s too high up and dominant in Elysian society; this means that the female’s beasts are attracted to his power not him. His beast definitely perks up, though, when a mysterious, ragged woman bursts through his home and asks a simple question.

Ah, I loved this short story. Emma Lai has found her place with the beasts and time travel. I would love to read a full novel from her in the future.

Ellie Wild has been working as a junior engineer on a space ship for the last two years. She works the last shift and is pretty much alone for most of the time. She talks to the ship, Paladian, as if it was a person.

Alastair is a Guardian. His job is to protect whom and what he is assigned to watch over. He has been given the job to watch over Paladian and her crew.

Ellie is working her shift and talking to the ship like always. She has an argument with it about whether it is male or female. A pipe on the ship lets out steam in front of her, causing her to fall and knock herself out. Alastair is there to come to her rescue and makes sure that she gets the medical attention she needs. He disappears, and she just assumes that he was a figment of her imagination. Alastair has been watching Ellie for years since she joined the crew. He thinks that she works too hard and needs to relax more. He sees his opportunity and waits for her in her room. Now he needs to prove to her that he is real and not a result of the huge bump on her head.

I have to admit that after reading the title, His Ship, Her Fantasy, I thought it would be on the erotic side. I was so wrong but in a great way! Emma Lai writes a well balanced book about a woman who just wants to prove that she can do what everyone thinks is a man’s job. She is great at her job but spends way too much time at it. Alastair is that man and he needs to teach her that it is okay to stop and look at the stars. He wants her to stop keeping to herself and he wants to prove to her that she can let someone get close to her. Alastair and Ellie balance each perfectly.
