Midnight’s Master by Cynthia Eden

Holly Storm is a reporter for Flash Five News. She had a great life until she found her ex-fiancé with a student. Her job is the only thing that she has left and she is good at it.

Niol Lapen is a level 10 Demon. He is considered the most powerful demon around and people give him a wide berth. Niol owns and runs a bar called Paradise Found. It is a place that “Others” can relax or find their next prey.

In the previous book of the Midnight’s Masters series, Holly is used by a powerful demon as his puppet. Niol comes to her rescue and burns the demon to ash. A few months – and therapy sessions – later, Holly finds that her sources are starting to drop like flies around the city. The bad part is that they seem to be murdered by the same person and are all connected to her somehow. A maniac is on the loose in the city picking off “Others”. Holly knows that she needs help finding who the murderer is so she asks Niol. Instead of helping her out of the goodness of his more than black heart, he makes a deal with her: his strength and sources for her in his bed. Love is not an option for either of them until feelings start to get in the way. Niol tries to distance himself from Holly because he thinks she makes him weak until he finds out a secret from her past. Nothing will stop him from finding out more about her and her family’s secrets, and that includes love.

Midnight’s Master, book three of the Midnight Masters series by Cynthia Eden, is even better than the first two in the series. I didn’t actually think that was possible, but Cynthia has done it. The book was fast paced and always moving forward in the story line. I don’t think there was a down moment to place that bookmark. Midnight’s Master is a book that once you start, you can’t put down until it is completely finished. Holly is bound and determined to never again be a victim to another demon. Niol had saved her from said demon and can’t seem to get his mind off of her. Somehow the powers that be decide they need to be together and bring them back to stop a serial killer.

Author Cynthia Eden Interview and Contest

Posted under Chat, Contests, Interviews, Site News by Site Hostess on Wednesday 4 August 2010 at 11:36 am

PLEASE NOTE: The contest portion of the Cynthia Eden contest is now over. The winner will be chosen at a later date an notified via email.

BBB: Can you please share with us how old you were when you wrote your first story?

CE: I wrote my first full-length novel when I was eighteen (and, with only the clear vision that time can bring, I can assure you it was very bad and deserves to be hidden under my bed). But I wrote short stories even when I was a kid. Making up stories was always fun for me.

BBB: Besides being a writer, what other types of jobs have you held?

CE: I’ve been a middle school history teacher, an admissions counselor, an office manager, and in college, a professional gift wrapper. :)

BBB: Please tell us more about the I’ll Be Slaying You and the storyline that drives it.

CE: Sure! Thanks for asking! I’ll Be Slaying You is the second book in my paranormal Night Watch series for Kensington Brava. “Night Watch” is a paranormal bounty hunting agency. The idea for the entire series is that…sometimes, it can (literally) take a monster in order to catch a killer.

In I’ll Be Slaying You, my heroine spends her nights tracking down rogue vampires. I think of her as a very grown-up and hard-edged Buffy. And I had a great time writing about her and her slaying skills!

BBB: You’ve conquered paranormal romance and are now moving into romantic suspense. What’s next?

CE: If I were an evil genius, I would totally say the world! Honestly, though, I love trying new genres. Urban fantasy intrigues me and so does horror. I’ve wanted to write a horror book or script for years. I think branching out into new areas is a great way to keep a writer’s creativity strong.

BBB: Your covers feature gorgeous men in various states of undress. Which is your favorite–the bare chest, or the sultry facial expression?

CE: Tough call. Very, very tough. I think my favorite is the bare chest…with a hint of the face. I love to see the strong, sculpted jaw of a hero on the cover of the book. Put that jaw with a great chest and you make me one happy woman.

BBB: When I saw you were writing about Sammael, I did a wicked-girl happy dance. What do you think it is about fallen angels that makes women go weak in the knees?

CE: Oh, Sammael! I did a happy dance when I got the go-ahead from my editor to write about him, too. I think women like fallen angels because we know they aren’t perfect. They’re sexy, they’re strong, but…not perfect. They’re acquainted with sin and some sins are just sexy.

BBB: Do you find it challenging working for multiple publishing houses at the same time?

CE: I love writing for different houses—it keeps me on my toes! Switching (between my paranormal stories with Kensington Brava and my Deadly romantic suspense stories for Grand Central) allows me to renew what I consider my creative well. I get to incorporate different elements into the various books, and I think that improves my writing.

BBB: Do you work on several books at one time, or do you have to finish one and move to another. Is it hard for you to switch from world to world, genre to genre?

CE: I like to work on one book at a time. I try to sink as deeply into that particular book’s world, and if I tried to write another book at the same time, I’m afraid I’d lose touch with my characters. Once I’m in a world, I’m there. And as for switching to another world or book…I like to take about a week off between projects. That way, my mind is more like a fresh slate when I start another story.

BBB: Are you a plotser or a panster? or a Planster (a combo of both - lol)

CE: I’m both! Depending on the book, I may plot it all out in advance or I may just let the story take me where it will. I see the merits in both ways, so I just, well, do both!

BBB: Who are your writing influences?

CE: Growing up, I loved Edgar Allen Poe. I think the darkness in his stories really called to me, so when I had my chance to write, I let darkness creep into my tales, too.

BBB: Buffy or TrueBlood?

CE: You are giving me some tough questions! Okay, I have to say…Buffy. Can’t help it—I’m a diehard Spike fan. I can’t think of a better anti-hero.

BBB: Do you have any upcoming appearances? If so where can our readers find you?

CE: I have just returned from the Romance Writers of America’s National Conference, so I am going to take a little break between trips for a bit. I will be around a lot on the web, but my travel will be limited for the next month or so.

I would like to say that I will definitely be attending the Southern Magic Romance Readers Luncheon in Birmingham, Alabama, on November 6th http://www.southernmagic.org/luncheon.html. Looking forward to it!

Thanks so much for taking the time to interview me. It was a pleasure.

I’ll Be Slaying You by Cynthia Eden

Posted under Adult Content, Book Reviews, Kindle, Shapeshifters, Vampires, e-books by Virginia on Wednesday 30 June 2010 at 9:29 am
*****

Dee Daniels was very good at her job as a bounty hunter tracking down vampires. There was not a vampire in Baton Rouge who did not fear her and what she represented. She was so good at her job because of something that happened in her past. She would not rest until she wiped out as many vampires as she could. When Jason Pak approached her about a Born Master on her turf, Dee went to work hunting him down and finding out what he was doing in town and doing what she needed to do in order to keep the citizens of her city safe. When she runs into Simon Chase, she is not sure of his purpose and does not really want him messing around in her affairs, let alone letting herself be attracted to him. However, in the end, she will need his knowledge to stay alive.

I am absolutely hooked on this series. I never know what is going to happen next. When the last book ended, I was not a hundred percent sure who the focus of the next book would be; there are so many interesting characters to be the focus of each book. Dee is one tough human woman. She is very independent and does a good job of protecting herself and hunting down her assigned prey. Occasionally, she gets herself into a situation where she needs a supernatural backup, but overall, I enjoyed following her initial adventures. The book got more exciting with each turn of the page, and there were some unexpected twists and turns throughout the novel. I could not put this book down because I just had to know what happened next to Dee. The romance that kindled between Simon Chase and her was intriguing as well, because for the life of me, I could not figure out Simon, which drew me deeper into the story. This is a fascinating and exciting series, and I recommend going out and picking up the first book and this one as well. It is a great book to take along on that vacation.

Book Excerpt: “Sandra “Dee” Daniels is a vampire’s worst nightmare. Sure, she couldn’t get up to five-six in the highest heels money can buy–not that she ever wears heels. But the monsters in her past and the stake in her boot are enough to keep most bloodsuckers interested in staying undead out of Baton Rouge.

But there are changes afoot on her turf. Rumors of a Born Master in town–a vampire so powerful he can make the streets run with blood. And a new face in Dee’s dive bars and alleyways–Simon Chase, a strong, sexy shadow with a haunted past of his own. Simon knows a lot about the dark side of Dee’s work. He knows even more about how to make her body spark with desire. But the hot lust shimmering between them is only the beginning. Because Simon also knows a secret that will change Dee’s life–if she can live long enough to uncover it.”

Eternal Hunter by Cynthia Eden

Posted under Adult Content, Book Reviews, Kindle, Shapeshifters, e-books by Virginia on Sunday 6 June 2010 at 5:32 am
*****

Erin Jerome is not entirely human. But the minute Jude Donovan got her scent, she would not be able to keep her secret for much longer. Jude knows she is something but just cannot figure out what. And Erin is not talking. However, when Erin’s stalker finds her and bodies start turning up, Erin cannot hide the fact that she is Other. She will have to trust Jude with her secret. As the sparks begin to fly between them, Erin finds out she does not have to hold back with Jude. That as another Other, he is strong enough to take anything she dishes out. They will have to work together to find out who her insane stalker is and put a stop to him.

I could NOT put Eternal Hunter down. WOW. Cynthia Eden pulls the reader into the story and does not let them go. The action was mind blowing and the magnetism between Jude and Erin was enthralling. This book was actually one of those books that I could say I did not see the ending coming. I thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Eden’s writing style and will definitely have to read the books from her other series. I am hooked!

Eternal Hunter is the first book in her Night Watch series. I am already eagerly anticipating the release of I’ll Be Slaying You, which comes out later this year. If you enjoy Ms. Eden’s works, be sure to pick this book up today. If you have not had a chance to read anything by her yet, then this book will leave you wanting more.

Book Excerpt: “Assistant DA Erin Jerome has a secret. Make that two. One: She’s not entirely human-she’s Other, desperately trying to keep her supernatural strength under wraps. Two: she’s got a killer stalking her-an Other rogue set on “gifting” her bloody corpses, not to mention nights lying awake in terror. Small wonder she’s been having bad luck with men.

But the bounty hunter on her new case isn’t worried about any of that. Jude Donovan is a shapeshifter himself, and the new DA’s midnight hair and addictive scent tell him all he thinks he needs to know: She’s gorgeous, she’s definitely not human, and she’s bringing out the animal in him in a really good way. He might have to track a psychotic Other stalker through half of Louisiana. But he might also get the chance to watch Erin’s wild side come out and play.”

Immortal Danger by Cynthia Eden

Posted under Book Reviews, Demons, Dragons, Shapeshifters, Vampires, Wizard, e-books by Megan on Saturday 19 December 2009 at 7:55 pm
*****

Maya Black used to be a cop before she was turned into a vampire one night in a dark alley. Now instead of hunting criminals, she hunts demons, shifters and vampires. She is also hired out as a bounty hunter to issue payback for those who can’t.

Adam Brody hates vampires with a passion; they lie and cannot be trusted. He thinks of them as parasites.

Adam is searching for his niece that was kidnapped by a horde of vampires two weeks ago. He must swallow his pride and ask Maya for help because she is the best at her job of hunting. He finds her at a feeding bar, and what he finds shocks him. She is unafraid of a powerful demon and laughs in the face of danger…she is beautiful. Maya loves to kick butt and take names. When Adam approaches her for a job, she demands blood in exchange. Can Adam get past his hatred for vampires and let Maya drink from him or will he have to search on his own? Did I mention that Maya also has a werewolf pack and vampires after her? When it rains, it pours!

I absolutely loved Immortal Danger! I nearly fell asleep at my computer reading it until the wee hours of the morning. Cynthia Eden knows how to write a great paranormal story. I normally do not like the tough woman angle because to me they seem too hard. Ms. Eden made it work, and I enjoyed watching Maya whip people with her sharp tongue. Adam was just so irresistible with his wit and charm; Maya didn’t have a prayer. The relationship between the two is hot from the very beginning but it moved forward from that and become so much more.

Belong to the Night by Shelly Laurenston, Cynthia Eden, and Sherrill Quinn

Posted under Adult Content, Anthologies, Book Reviews, Magic, Shapeshifters, Vampires, Witches by Shirley on Wednesday 14 October 2009 at 3:54 pm
****

This anthology contains three novellas –

The Wolf, The Witch, and Her Lack of a Wardrobe by Shelly Laurenston – 4.5/5

This is a fun read about two people who could not be more different and still make a great couple. Jamie Meacham and her witch coven have signed on to protect the small southern town of Smithville and its menagerie of shapeshifters. Driven to increase her power, she is a serious, young black woman who says what she thinks and makes no excuses. Tully Smith, the town’s sheriff and a shapeshifting wolf, is care-free, contented and laid back with a fun-loving streak of devilment in him. Ms. Laurenston does a great job of using actions and relationships to build these two characters. She also makes sensual, sexy scenes integral elements of the story.

In the Dark by Cynthia Eden – 3.5/5

When Sadie James sees her old lover whose death she has been mourning for two years fondling a redhead right in front of her, she is filled with a rage that unleashes the leopard in her. When she confronts Liam Sullivan there in the bar, they are surprised to learn the secret each has been keeping from the other and that their passion still exists. As they join forces to stop a rogue shifter who is on a killing spree, can they get beyond the hot sex to work out their differences? Although the overall outcome is predictable, Ms. Eden adds a few fresh elements that keep the story from being stale.

City of the Dead by Sherrill Quinn – 3.0/5

Having her brother in trouble once again brings Dori Falcon back to Jack Boudreau, a New Orleans cop, to ask for his help. Every other time she had been able to walk away before they could make love but Dori is tired of fighting their attraction. And Jack is tired of having her escape him. So this time it is going to be different, and it is. The steamy sex, though decently written, dominates the story. Some more insight into the characters and livelier action on the brother’s rescue would have made this more enjoyable.

Midnight Sins by Cynthia Eden

Posted under Book Reviews, Demons, Immortals, Shapeshifters, Succubus, Vampires by Megan on Monday 20 October 2008 at 8:16 pm
****½

Detective Todd Brookes is a detective. He is working a possible serial killer murder case with his partner, Colin Gyth. The only suspect they have is a beautiful blond that he cannot wait to get in bed with. Too bad she is a killer.

Carla Maloan is the beautiful blond. She is also a succubus that has decided to give up sex. After seeing Todd she begins to think that that she may have made a mistake. Well, until he accuses her of murder.

Todd and Colin have been called to their third victim within the last month, all with the same MO. After they find a purse belonging to Carla at the scene, she becomes the one and only suspect. Todd must find out if she is guilty or if she is being framed for the murders. If she is being framed, who is doing it and why. Right now all he can think about is getting her in his bed, naked. The case just seems too neat and a lot of things do not add up. One of them being why his partners growls.

Cynthia Eden is already on my top ten lists and this book confirms why I feel that way. This book was fast paced and I had a hard time finding a place to stop so I could sleep. Todd was an alpha hero and made sure that Carla knew exactly how he felt. Love those assertive types; add a gun and I am melting. This book follows Hotter After Midnight but can be a stand alone. At first it felt like I was missing something in the story line but all the questions are answered.

Hotter After Midnight by Cynthia Eden

Posted under Adult Content, Book Reviews, Demons, Kindle, Shapeshifters, Vampires by ReaderWoman on Monday 21 July 2008 at 12:30 am
****

What a life Dr. Emily Drake lives! As a therapist that specializes in treatment of bewildered vampires and perplexed demons, she has a birds-eye view of the problems, fixations and tribulations of the “Others.” Upon linking with detective Colin Gyth, a closet wolf shapeshifter, Emily finds out a whole lot more than she wanted or expected to about the shadow side of her life. Even though she believes she has a handle on the gift that enables her to know and recognize the Others, during her travails and experiences with Colin she learns that what she doesn’t know may kill her.

The relationship that builds between Emily and Colin is fraught with not only the typical relationship angst, but the dark attraction of Colin’s shapeshifter nature is confusing to them both. Colin has spent most of his life not understanding his abilities, and trying to stifle his shapeshifter nature, and Emily has always prided herself on avoiding relationships with Others. Nevertheless, they bring out the beast in each other, with a passionate vibrant desire that threatens to engulf them, and takes them closer to danger, and to the Night Butcher. This murder case is complicated by the past, and threatens to overwhelm any future that Emily and Colin might share, so its resolution is necessary, and fast!

The therapy idea is clever and well played out, and the concept of therapy for Others is both amusing and intriguing. The thought that vampires can suffer from midlife crises, or that sex-demons can have mother fixations is certainly a twist on the theme of therapy and its benefits. It is also encouraging to read how Emily and Colin each deal with their uniqueness (her ability to sense Others, and his ability to shapeshift) is also an echo for many “normal” lives – we all have something special about us that requires understanding and enhancement.

The romance and sex scenes are definitely hot and heavy; the erotica in this book is well done and keeps the romance alive, even though the scenes are fiery and very sensual. Not for the reader who is bothered by sexual intensity and explicitness.

The quality of this book lies in its ability to provide several different facets for the reader. There is the mystery – who is the Night Butcher, and what does he want? There is the romance and sex – will she or won’t she, and will he be overcome by his wolfish nature? The paranormal forces at work are a bit scary and somewhat overpowering, as with a well-written thriller, which keeps the reader glued to the page. The approach of the author is one of humor and sensuality; Cynthia Eden understands the value of keeping readers on the edge of their seats, wishing for more. It would be a great first book in a series!
