The Shadow Seer by Fran Jacobs
Prince Candale is dying despite the efforts of all the healers in the kingdom of Carnia. As a last resort, the witch Mayrila is brought in, and miraculously, she saves him. But she heals him for selfish reasons, believing he is the Shadow Seer, a prophet, and destined for great things.
Long-held family secrets are finally revealed, and Candale leaves the palace to go to White Oaks to read the Rose Prophecies to learn the truth about himself. He takes with him his bodyguard, Trellany, and his close friend, the bard Teveriel. He finds a truth, but it only leads to more questions and possibly madness for himself and doom for the land. Is he just a vessel for a demon bent on destruction or is he a savior?
The Shadow Seer is Book 1 of Ellenessia’s Curse and sets the foundation for the series. The book is extremely detailed in some respects (particularly the relationships between characters) but sketchy in details about the culture and world. Prince Candale is not a sympathetic character. Rather than portraying him as overwhelmed and under siege, he comes across as weak and whiny, and I don’t believe that was the author’s intent. This book tended to lurch rather than flow, and it was difficult to stay engaged in the main story as there was so many sub-stories going on.

I agree with the other comments about being patchy, but it grips and pulls you into the storyline. Some parts of the story make you feel sorry for Candale and other parts makes you feel that you want to hit him. There are also parts where you think you know somebody like that, who puts evereyone secondary to themselves.
I have been trying to get The Seers Tower but it is difficult to find on other than Frans own site.
