Interview:

Hi Jeaniene !

Welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!

I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been very interesting to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a writer! Readers, if you haven’t done so already please stop by and get your copy of Jeaniene’s latest release One Foot in the Grave. It is one of the most action packed reads of the year!

BBB: What do you find the most challenging aspect of writing?

JF: Revisions! Writing a first draft is a lot more fun. Knowing there are multiple things wrong and trying to figure out a way to fix them can be frustrating. It’s satisfying to be done with revisions, and know the book is far better than it started out as, but during the process, it can be rough.

BBB: What is the most rewarding aspect of writing for you?

JF: This is a hard question to answer, actually. There are so many rewarding things about it. Typing “the end” on a book is very rewarding. Having my editor or critt partner tell me I surprised them (in a good way!) is rewarding. Getting letters from readers telling me how much they liked this character, or that scene, is beyond cool. Meeting all the different people I have through writing has been wonderful. I couldn’t pick a favorite, because all those things are special.

BBB: What or who was your muse that got you started writing?

JF: My muse would have to be my dreams. I’ve always had vivid, detailed dreams, and even as a teen, I’d write little stories out of them. My first two books were inspired by the same dream, in fact. But don’t get me wrong – there’s SO much more to writing than falling asleep :). The muse, or whatever anyone has for inspiration, can only give you a starting point. It takes determination, a thick skin, and (one might say) crazed stubbornness to see a book through to completion, let alone published.

BBB: What do you feel are the benefits of the new electronic readers such as Kindle to the environment?

JF: I really don’t know how much of an impact electronic readers are having on the environment. Right now, e-books are growing, but who knows if they’ll ever totally replace the paper version of a book? I’m glad my books are available in electronic versions, because it offers readers a choice on format, but for my own personal reading, I prefer paper books. I like to have something tangible, and since I’m prone to migraines, not reading from a computer screen is less straining on my vision.

BBB: What impact do electronic readers create on the bottom line for authors in the end? Do you feel they have a negative impact or positive, or no impact at all that you can see?

JF: I think electronic readers have a positive impact on authors, because when you have more choice, you have more readers. Catering to individual preferences is a good thing. E-piracy is a regretful side effect of e-books, however, and hopefully, more will be done in the future to protect authors and publishers from the theft and illegal distribution of books.

BBB: Who among your characters is your favorite and why?

JF: Hmm. Probably Bones. He comes through very clear to me as a character, and he has a truly wicked sense of humor. I will say he’s easier to write when I’m doing it from Cat’s point of view, however. I wrote a short story from Bones’s point of view recently, and that required me to explore aspects of his personality that aren’t my favorite. Bones gets a more forgiving look being written through Cat’s eyes, because she isn’t privy to all his inner demons, and of course, he is.

BBB: If you had to pick a secondary character as a favorite, who would it be and why?

JF: Cat, naturally. She’s the character with the point of view I write through most of the time. I admire so many things about Cat – although she can frustrate me to no end at times – but what I most admire about her is her ability to admit when she’s wrong. She makes a lot of mistakes, but instead of trying to justify herself, to others or internally, she owns up to them. And she does to try to learn from them, though she still struggles with that. Because of refusing deny when she’s been wrong, Cat is pitiless in detailing her own faults. This has made her somewhat less of a sympathetic character to readers, but that’s what you get when you write in first person narrative. I think readers might be surprised to see a story told by another narrative with Cat in it, because Cat would come across a lot less flawed. We’re all our own worst critics, aren’t we?

BBB: We would like to know what inspired the Bones character?

JF: Wow, so many things. Appearance-wise, Bones is a blend of (younger versions of) Jude Law, Ethan Hawke, Christian Bale, Viggo Mortensen, Billy Idol, Bruce Campbell, and James Franco. Personality-wise, Bones probably has a little of Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Caribbean) Martin Blank (from the movie Grosse Pointe Blank), and Bill (from the movie Kill Bill) in him, among many others. Bones really is a stir fry of people, movie characters, book characters, and my own twisted imagination.

BBB: Can you tell us how many more books are planned for the Night Huntress series and when we can expect the next one?

JF: The next book, At Grave’s End, comes out December 30th. Books four and five in the series don’t have release dates yet, or titles, but once I know both, I’ll update my website. There may be more than five books in the series, but that decision is up to my publisher – and my fans.

BBB: What genre would you classify your Night Huntress series? Urban Fantasy, Horror, Paranormal a mixture?

JF: I consider it urban fantasy romance. It’s really a hybrid of both, because the action and world building are equally important to the story as the relationship between Cat and Bones. When I wrote it, I had no idea what genre label it fell under. I wrote the story as it needed to be told, and then let my publisher decide where it was best suited to be shelved under.

BBB: Do you have any plans to write any YA paranormal in the future?

JF: I would like to, yes, but I have no hard plans for it. There are so many outstanding books in the YA market today that it makes it very appealing to me to possibly be a part of that. The fact that I have three YA story partials written adds to that appeal. But I don’t see switching from writing adult to YA. I may one day do both, but I wouldn’t cross over to YA completely and leave my adult books behind.

BBB: Cat’s mother is quite the pain in many ways, will we see more of her, and will she EVER mellow out? :)

JF: LOL, if I only had a dollar for every “Kill Justina!” email I’ve received. Yes, Cat’s mother has been quite the pill in the first two books, but there is more depth to her character than “crazed bigot”. Justina has a long way to go before she’d ever be considered a sympathetic character – if at all – but she’s an important part of Cat’s life, and thus, the story. For the next couple books, anyway.

BBB: What is your favorite paranormal book of all time?

JF: There is NO way I could answer this. I love different books for different reasons, and picking “one book to rule them all” would be impossible for me. I can say that last year, there were two stand-outs for me. One was The Scent of Shadows by Vicki Pettersson, and the other was Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr. By that’s about all I can narrow it down to, are two favorites from last year.

BBB: If you could be any paranormal creature, what would it be and why?

JF: If I could be a vampire like the ones I write – no need to kill to eat, can still go out in daylight, no aversion to crosses or churches – then sure, I’d pick that. Bram Stoker’s version of a vampire? Nope, I’d keep my humanity and be happy with it, thanks.

BBB: When is your next scheduled book signing?

JF: Um, I don’t have one at this time. When I’m at the Romantic Times and Romance Writers of America conventions next year, I’ll be signing at both, but I’m not big on doing local signings. I love my book store and I go there all the time as a shopper, but it would feel very weird to go there as an author for a signing. I do contests and giveaways online for signed items, but that, and conventions, are where I do most of my signings.

BBB: What did you do before you became a writer? Do you write full time?

JF: Before I sold my first book, I worked full time as a processing manager. Now I work part time in addition to writing. It can be tough juggling both things at once, but bills wait for no one. Plus, many authors still work full time, write, and take care of children. I bow in awe before those authors. They must never sleep.

BBB: If you had to pick one place in the world where you would have to reside for eternity (in ghost/shapeshifter or vamp form) where would it be?

JF: Easy: heaven. In any form. :)

BBB: Do you have any pearls of wisdom you would like to share with our
readers here today?

JF: Well, if your readers are aspiring writers, I would say read a lot, write more, revise until it hurts, and don’t let rejection get you down. Rejection happens to every writer. It doesn’t mean a writer is bad, it just means that book might not be ready yet, or hasn’t found the proper home yet.

For readers, I’d say, if you really liked a book, email the author and tell him/her. I can’t express how much it’s meant to me to get those kinds of emails. It absolutely can make an author’s day!

I was wondering if there was any news on there being any more than 5 books in the Night Huntress Series yet? I know there are going to be five, which I am thrilled for - but you’d mentioned before you could easily continue the series beyond and you hoped to. Any word yet on if that will happen for sure?

    Hi Jeaniene!

Long time no see! Here’s my question.

Do you foresee a time when you can throw off the shackles of other employment and write full time?

I bet a lot of readers would like to see multiple books each year. (Hint! Hint!)

    Best,
    Debi

    Hi Jeaniene!

I was just wondering: What was the hardest scene/moment to cut - from any (or all!) of your books? Is there one that sticks out or do they sort of just fall off through time?

And for the random question: What CD is in your CD player right now? :)

I don’t know exactly what I’m supposed to do for the contest… but I’ve subscribed to bittenbybooks & added on myspace & I’ve pimped the interview on my livejournal (switchamacallit.livejournal.com). Thanks for choosing Jeaniene for an interview! It’s always nice to see her in print :)

I devoured the first two Night Huntress books and loved them both (though I borrowed and have since returned them to the library, hint, hint.) LOL

Dare I say, Cat and Bones are the first couple I’ve run across who compare to JD Robb’s Roarke and Eve in terms of sex appeal, devotion to each other and ability to kick ass? I can’t wait until At Grave’s End comes out! I read in this month’s RWR that Cat and Bones will definitely get their happy ending at the conclusion of the series, which makes this reader thrilled indeed. :)

Now to my question: from your blog, I see you’re a huge Dean Koontz fan, as I am. My favorite book of his is Lightning, followed by Intensity. What’s yours?

Oh, and one last comment: can I just say how much I love an author that uses a phrase like “even though your prudery is on life support” in a contemporary urban fantasy? Bones is one of the few characters I can recall whose vocabulary is as charmingly odd as my own. And I can’t even claim to be British. ;)

    Loved the interview, Jeaniene!

I definitely enjoyed the books of The Night Huntress series and look forward to ‘At Grave’s End’. Congratulations on a terrific series!

Question 1) Do you have a favorite dessert and does it say anything about your personality?

Question 2) How did you come up with the names of Cat and Bones and do the names come first or after you develop the character?

Jeaniene, always afraid to hound you with overenthusiasm, but you opened yourself up with the “email the authors you love” comment. LOVE your books! You are my favorite author of all time, and your books are my favorite of all time and I am pining for At Grave’s End. My question I’m not sure if you can answer due to spoilers… but will we see Cat’s friend Timmy again?

Great interview, Jeaniene. Thanks to you & Bitten by Books!

I find it interesting that your storyline/characters were the result of a dream. That’s exactly where the idea for our first shapeshifter novel came from.

I also have very vivid dreams and am a migraine sufferer - I wonder if it’s something to do with the way our brains are wired or perhaps the migraine medication that causes the vivid dreams?

BTW, I’ve added Bitten by Books to my Twitter list.

  19. Comment by Jeaniene Frost — August 18, 2008 @ 8:31 am

First, thanks again to Rachel for hosting this interview and contest.

Okay, questions (wow, you guys are great! :).

Tami asked, “did you choose the woman for the covers, cause she look like cate blanchatte?
or do you get to choose the covers for your books? also do you do the SASE for bookmarks?”

I didn’t choose the cover model or the design for my books. Thomas Egner, the art director at Avon, did, and can I tell you how much I LOVE Tom? He took the rambling suggestions I gave to my editor, and made these fabulous covers out of them. Really, LOVE Tom!

SASE’s for book marks: Yes. I need to post a snail-mail address on my website, but for now, you can send to Jeaniene Frost, c/o Nancy Yost at Lowenstein Yost, 121 West 27th Street, New York, NY 10001.

Cindi asked, “Do you like doing this Author Interviews? I know it gets you out there more but I figure at times it can be tedious.”

I do like interviews! People come up with such interesting questions, and it gives me a good indicator for what’s memorable to people when they read my books.

Kat Taylor asked, “I was wondering if there was any news on there being any more than 5 books in the Night Huntress Series yet? I know there are going to be five, which I am thrilled for - but you’d mentioned before you could easily continue the series beyond and you hoped to. Any word yet on if that will happen for sure?”

No word on that yet, Kat. I expect next year, which is when I turn in books four and five, my publisher will look over sales on my first three books and make their decision whether to buy more books then. It’s a business, so they need to look at numbers first.

Debi Murray asked, “Do you foresee a time when you can throw off the shackles of other employment and write full time? I bet a lot of readers would like to see multiple books each year. (Hint! Hint!)”

LOL, Debi, you are so subtle ;-). This depends on two things - what my royalty earnings will be, and whether my publisher buys more books. Right now, though, there will be book three at the end of December this year, an anthology in summer 2009, and probably book four some time before the end of 2009. So, I’m trying my best to get books to people :).

Jess asked, “I was just wondering: What was the hardest scene/moment to cut - from any (or all!) of your books? Is there one that sticks out or do they sort of just fall off through time? And for the random question: What CD is in your CD player right now?”

Wow, that’s a rough question. I do a lot of cutting with my books, and each time it hurts! But I know certain scenes drag down the plot instead of enhance it, so they have to go. I can’t pick a particular worst “ouch” moment with that. But, to soothe the pain, I do post deleted scenes on my website and fan site :).

In my CD player right now is a mix CD with artists such as Sarah McLachlan, Radiohead, Marilyn Manson, 44, and Damien Rice. Yes, it’s an eclectic mix.

Carolyn asked, “…I see you’re a huge Dean Koontz fan, as I am. My favorite book of his is Lightning, followed by Intensity. What’s yours?”

WATCHERS is probably my favorite Dean Koontz book, but I love so many of his, it’s hard to pick just one. And thanks for the comment about the “prudery” line. I was cracking up when I wrote that. Sometimes, I can hear Bones’s voice very clearly, and that was one of those times.

Shari C asked, “Question 1) Do you have a favorite dessert and does it say anything about your personality? Question 2) How did you come up with the names of Cat and Bones and do the names come first or after you develop the character?”

Creme brulee! What does it say about me? That I will never be thin ;-).

Names, hmm. Cat I named after the heroine in Sydney Sheldon’s novel, THE OTHER SIDE OF MIDNIGHT (her name was Catherine, as is Cat’s full name). Bones just…came to me. I don’t remember how or why. I just knew when it did, that it fit him. And then I had to come up with a reason why he chose it.

Kat Taylor asked, “but will we see Cat’s friend Timmy again?”

If I go beyond five books in the Night Huntress series, yes, I see Timmie popping up again. I know what he’s been doing all this time and I loved him as a character. I just wasn’t able, logically, to put him in the story for books three, four, or five (although book five isn’t written yet, so Timmie could change my mind).

Rebekah asked, “If you weren’t writing what would be your next ultimate career opportunity?”

Photography. I love it. I’m just not very good at it, lol.

  29. Comment by Jeaniene Frost — August 18, 2008 @ 9:36 am

    Questions, continued:

Helen Lent asked, “How are you?”

Aren’t you sweet, Helen? I’m fine, thanks. Just had lunch (my father makes THE BEST turkey meatloaf) and now I’m back on the keyboard.

Ilona Andrews (author of the fabulous books, MAGIC BITES and MAGIC BURNS, and since she is modest, she will be cursing me for introducing her that way, ha, ha!!), asked, “I was wondering if you had any pets and if you do, what they are. And are there any plans for cat and Bones to have a pet together?”

I have a dog named Gypsy, who loves my husband far more than she loves me, lol, even though I adore her.

Cat gets a kitty in book two, though the cat has remained deliberately nameless. You will see more of Nameless Male Kitty in book three and beyond, and I certainly hope Cat and Bones pick a name for the feline already!

Hmm, do I see a future Name That Kitty contest…? ;-)

Stacy Mantle asked, “Can I ask how many drafts you average before you send it into the publisher? Also - did you use the Writers Guide to locate an agent prior to submitting to a publisher or did you bypass the agent on the first novel?”

Stacy, the number of drafts varies. Halfway to the Grave was the first book I’d ever written, so as you can guess, it went through MANY drafts. I’d say, on average, I go through four drafts before my editor sees the manuscript. And then it’s back to revisions again!

I used Writer’s Market to locate my first agent. It was very helpful to get a starting idea as to who reps what, and who’s still open for submissions. Always follow up online, though, because guidelines can change.

Jennifer asked, “Do you have a favorite series that you really like? Conversely, is there a book that you read that you wish you had written?”

Oh wow, favorite series. I can’t pick just one. Seriously. I list my favorite authors on my website under “Links”, and most of those authors write series (yes, I’m addicted to series novels). And there are SO many books that I’ve finished and thought, “Damn, I wish I’d written that.” Again, refer to my favorite authors links. All of those authors have made me wish I could write like they do.

Miki Quick asked, “I was wondering what your writing day is like. How many words or pages do you try to write per day? Are you a morning writer or night? And do you listen to anything while writing?”

This varies. When I’m on a tight deadline, I write every day, morning and night (when not at the Day Job, that is). If I have a little time between deadlines, I catch up on my reading. Reading is a first love of mine, and I never intend to give that up.

Music - mostly I listen to music to get in the writing mood, then shut it off when I’m actually writing. If I’m stuck on a scene, though, I’ve been known to play music to try and center my focus.

KatieBabs (hi, Katie!) asked, “Are you going to mainly stick with just vampires in your Huntress series or will we see more creatures like werewolves or fairies popping up in the future?”

If I could wave a magic Contract Wand, I would cheat on vampires ;-). The fanged ones are my first love, but I also have story ideas featuring demons, werewolves, magic, and other paranormal elements/creatures.

Cindy asked, “When developing your characters, do you prefer to work with “live” (as in real people) or “fictional” models?”

Nine times out of ten, fictional. I’ll use “live” people to give readers a barometer for what a character looks like, or their personality, but I rarely base a character on someone who exists. I do introduce a new character in book three who’s based on an actual historical figure, but that’s because I couldn’t resist the chance to pull out a figure from history and throw him into my novel.

Marnie Walsky asks, “1) Will Tate ever trully forgive Cat and understand that her heart was already taken? 2) Will Cat learn how to fly?”

Marnie, the answer to both your questions appear in book four. I can’t tell you now, though, or it would spoiler (sorry!).

Cai asks, “I wonder if it’s something to do with the way our brains are wired or perhaps the migraine medication that causes the vivid dreams?”

I have no idea if it’s a brain wiring thing. I can tell you I had vivid dreams since long before I took migraine meds, so that can’t be it. I am so grateful for migraine meds, though. They keep me from being unable to function two to three times a month, which is how often I get migraines. Anyone else who gets them has all my sympathy.

I found Halfway to the Grave and One Foot In The Grave on the same trip to the bookstore looking for new stuff to read. After finishing Halfway I was glad I had One Foot on hand.

Is Justina’s reaction to Cat’s marriage going to be in At Graves End? Because that is something I’ve been wanting to see.

    1. Do you make playlists for your books at all? What songs are on there, if you do? And if not, do you listen to music when writing? (If so, what kind of music/songs)?

    2. If you could have written any other book or books, what would they be and why?

  42. Comment by Jeaniene Frost — August 18, 2008 @ 12:30 pm

    Questions, continued

Ruth asked, “How do you get beyond the idea? How did your idea become a story?”

I get beyond the initial idea behind a story by asking, “who, what, why” about a million times. That way, I dig into the characters, the setting, the plot, and how they got to the point of the original inspiration of the idea. Then, I take that and try to build a coherent story around it. Now you know why it takes several drafts :).

Kimberly B asked, “If they made a movie of this series, who would you cast as Cat and Bones? You mentioned that you hate doing revisions; do you have a critique partner or beta reader to help with that?”

Wow, I would have the hardest time coming up with actors to play Cat and Bones. If you made me decide now (and don’t hold me to this, because I could change my mind in five minutes!) I’d say Jessica Alba as Cat, and James Franco as Bones. Both of them can do physical roles, and they both have done parts with darker characters.

I do have a critique partner: Melissa Marr. She’s awesome, because she doesn’t back down when I start to sputter, “but, but, but!” in defense of something that sucks in my books, lol. It usually takes about five minutes of denial before I see reason in the critique, and Melissa is gracious enough to deal with those denial-filled five minutes :).

Tanya asked, “where is your favorite place to read? Second is: What kind, if any, treats to you like to munch on while you read?”

My favorite place to read is lying on my couch. I put my feet in a blanket, prop a pillow under my head, and I am HAPPY. Favorite treats would be anything fried and salty. Fritos and Cheetos regularly wreck my diet.

Amberkatze asked, “If your series was made in a TV series or Film who would you like to see play Bones and Cat? (see my answer above) and what TV and film do you like watching? Any favourite actors or actresses?”

Right now I watch Family Guy (I know, it’s horrible, but I still laugh at it!), the Tudors, Ghost Hunters, Monster Quest, and Torchwood. Favorite actress in the movies would be Angelina Jolie (and has been even before Brad). Favorite actor would be Viggo Mortensen.

TeresaW asked, “If you could go on a vacation anywhere, where would it be? Do you have a favorite movie?”

Scotland or Alaska. I want to go to both places SO BAD. Favorite movie…wow. Too hard. I have so many favorites, and I can’t even pick one based on genre (horror, action, romance, fantasy, etc). The best movie I saw in the past couple months would be The Dark Knight, but that’s not my all-time favorite movie ever. I could never pick just one.

Kalee asked, “My question is since Cat and Bones are now “married” is there going to be a possiblity of a miracle baby in the works? I would love to see those to as parents!”

Okay, look away if you don’t want to be spoilered on this answer. Seriously, SPOILER ALERT!!

No miracle baby between Cat and Bones. It would go against all the worldbuilding I’d established that said only a brand-new vampire could impregnate someone, and that only in extremely rare cases. Now, will Cat and Bones ever be parents via adoption, or from any people they might change into vampires? *wink* Maybe.

Delilah asked, “Is Justina’s reaction to Cat’s marriage going to be in At Graves End? Because that is something I’ve been wanting to see.”

Yes, Justina’s reaction will be in At Grave’s End, and I think it will garner a laugh or two :).

Stacy Mantle asked, “so can we ask what your day job is?”

I work as an accountant at a lead company. Very mundane, not much writing involved. Just lots of numbers.

and, “if you DO have a future “Name that Kitty” award, can we PLEASE announce it on my site, http://www.petsweekly.com?

If I have that contest, you are more than welcome to mention it on your site.

Sarai asked, “Right so my first question is what inspired you to make Bones British? Not that I’m complaining, you gotta love the accent, and secondly, why Ohio?”

Okay, this will date me in horrible ways, but as a teen, I had a Billy Idol crush. You can still catch me singing along to Cradle Of Love whenever it comes on the radio. So, that’s probably where my love of Engish accents stemmed. Ohio I chose because I spent several years of my childhood there, and it’s such a great place as far as culture variations. It has tiny towns, big cities, and even Amish country. It made sense that someone like Cat could have been sheltered living there, while still going out to bars hunting vampires.

Miki Quick asked, “will we be seeing more of Bones’s ‘inner demons’ or some of the other things that you don’t particularly like about his personality coming out?”

Yes. It would be cheating not to dig deeper into Bones’s character just because there are less pleasant aspects of it. But don’t worry. Bones doesn’t suddenly morph into an evil person.

Lauren asked, “1. Do you make playlists for your books at all? What songs are on there, if you do?”

I don’t have full playlists. I have certain songs that remind me of certain books, and I will listen to them repeatedly while writing those books.

For Halfway to the Grave, it was HERO OF THE DAY, by Metallica. For One Foot in the Grave, it was STAND INSIDE YOUR LOVE, by Smashing Pumpkins, and for At Grave’s End, it was NOW WE ARE FREE, by Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard (in case you’re saying, “Huh?”, it’s the song that played at the end of the movie GLADIATOR).

    2. If you could have written any other book or books, what would they be and why?”

I give the same response as when I was asked to pick a favorite book - there’s no way I could pick one. There are so many other books that I love and wish I’d written. I couldn’t begin to name them all.

Blake asked, “I was just wondering if you were going to be on any panels at rt again next year?”

I should be on a Paranormal Romance panel, and possibly an Urban Fantasy panel and a Vampire panel. That’s still being sorted out. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

Also, a hello to CrystalGB and Katie! Hope you like the books :).

If I missed a question, please pipe up! I think I covered everthing through BLake’s questions (more might be asked as I answer these), but if I missed you, don’t be shy about telling me.

Will Cat & Bones have a regular human wedding? Not sure if they even want one, but I can just imagine Justina’s face at that thought!

Who owns Cat’s old house on the cherry orchard, and will she & Bones ever go back there?

I love this series and enjoyed getting to know more about one of my favoite authors. I do however have a few questions if I may:
The first question is are you the first author/writer in your family?
My second question is do you have any plans to write another series?
I had to ask that second question because I got worried when you said this series might only be 5 books. I want way more myself! Yes, I am selfish. Cannot help that. When I find a favorite author I don’t like the series to end. (Note to self: Stalk publisher and hypnotize them to into making this an ongoing series without an end in sight!)

I love the series and can’t wait for December to read more. I’ve gushed to many of my romance reading friends about your books.

Are you a chocoholic? If so milk or dark chocolate?

Sounds like you are a plotter… has the direction of the books strayed away from where you thought it should go or have the characters “pushed” you in another direction?

  55. Comment by Jeaniene Frost — August 18, 2008 @ 2:23 pm

Stacey asked, “I wanted to know if anyone in your life has inspired the characters you write about?”

I’m sure there are slivers of people I know mixed in with my characters, but there isn’t any character who was wholly inspired by someone I know. Which would make sense, since I’m writing about vampires, ghouls, and ghosts, and to my knowledge, I haven’t met any of those *wink*.

Pam P asked, “I guess that story in Bones’ POV is in that anthology next year? Do you think you’ll do that again in future anthology stories? Is Bones going to stay true to his word and defer to Cat as his boss, or will issues arise?”

Yes, the story in Bones’s POV will be in the EOS anthology with authors Kim Harrison, Melissa Marr, Vicki Pettersson, and Jocelynn Drake. I may revisit Bones in short story prequels again. That idea appeals to me.

Will issues arrive with Cat’s work? Yes, but they might not be the ones you’d expect ;).
Lisa asked, “Will Cat & Bones have a regular human wedding? Who owns Cat’s old house on the cherry orchard, and will she & Bones ever go back there? And last, when you post the cover for At Grave’s End on your website, will you post an excerpt too?”

A human wedding is possible. Cat isn’t used to vampire ways, so her blood binding with Bones wouldn’t feel the same to her as it does to him. Cat’s old house – I do intend to revisit Ohio in a future story, and her old house might play a part in that. When I post the cover for AT GRAVE’S END, I will be posting the first two chapters of the book as well.

Stacy Stewart asked, “Do you plan to write another series after Cat and Bones? Will they be stand alone or will they always follow a series line?”

Yes, I hope to write another series after Cat and Bones. I’d also like to write a couple stand-alone novels. We’ll see which wish gets granted first! :).

“If we sent you our books and return packaging would you sign them?”

Yes. See my response earlier on the in comments thread for the address to send them to.

Alana Abbot asked, “How do you feel about writing in a short format, rather than in a novel-length format? Does one come more naturally than the other?”

I find short stories harder to write than novels, actually. Short stories are less forgiving as far as balancing backstory, plot, and pacing. I have fun with them, though, and short stories/novellas are something I hope to do more of in the future.

Cander asked, “Do you have a favorite time of day to write? Where is your favorite place to write?”

I write in the morning, afternoon, and evening. Whenever I can get some time, it doesn’t matter (although my husband prefers I limit evening time, since he’s home from work then). I have a desk where I write, which, to the casual observer, would look frighteningly unorganized, but I know where everything is.
Stacey asked, “What type of books do you like to read?”

All types, really, but my favorites are paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and horror.

Ann M asked, “Are you a chocoholic? If so milk or dark chocolate? Sounds like you are a plotter… has the direction of the books strayed away from where you thought it should go or have the characters “pushed” you in another direction?”

I’m not a chocoholic (I really love vanilla!) but when I want chocolate, I want dark chocolate. The darker, the better. As far as plots, I first write a rough outline – and I mean, rough! – that’s consisting of half-formed sentences and scene ideas. Then, I start writing. Then, I add more to the skeleton outline as ideas comes to me. I write more. Sometimes the characters do push me in other directions, but if they have good reason to, I let them.

And can I just say you guys have been great! I’m so flattered by the response, and so appreciative of all the sweet comments. Thanks so much, everyone!

Thalaea asked, “I was wondering if Cat will be going back to being a redhead anytime soon? Also, will Bones be having any blasts from the past coming back to haunt him?”

Yes, Cat will go back to her natural hair color later in book three, and yes, more people from Bones’s past will show up. He’s lived a long time, so that’s inevitable.

Lily K asked, “My question is have you any ideas for writing another series when you finish up with Bones and Cat? Is it going to be paranormal or another genre?”

ARMY OF DARKNESS for my favorite Bruce movie. He has some classic lines in that (“Who wants some? Who wants a lil’?”). Love that movie.

Bones has a tattoo. It’s an outline of cross bones on his upper arm. In book two, Cat gets a matching tattoo of that, to remind herself of Bones.

    Hi Jeaniene,

I received both of the Night Huntress books as gifts, and I can’t begin to count the number of times that I have called and rethanked the gift givers.

My question comes as a fledging scribbler. (I haven’t made it to the author stage yet.) How do you write characters that are imperfect without making them come across as victims? Cat has a number of human flaws that rear their head at the most inopportune moments, but she never comes across as a victim of her heritage. I am having trouble finding that balance in my own writings.

Thank you for sharing your vivid dreams that came to print.

    Respectfully,

    Jennifer.

  67. Comment by Jeaniene Frost — August 18, 2008 @ 5:39 pm

Hi Jennifer. Glad the gifts worked out for you! You asked, “How do you write characters that are imperfect without making them come across as victims?”

There is no easy answer to this. To some readers, Cat WAS a victim. To some readers, she was too mean. To some, she was too cold. And to some readers, Cat was heroic, sympathetic, strong, etc. Each reader will take away a different reaction to a character, and sometimes, those reactions will be polar opposites.

I can say to remember to show flaws when you write, because no character (or person!) is without them. But still, to avoid the too-cold, too-stupid, too-stubborn syndrome, try to show your character learning from their flaws and mistakes. If you do, at least most of the time, readers will be more forgiving of those characters. Maybe even relate to them, too.

And best of luck with your writing!

Hey Jeaniene! I must say that I absolutely love your books and that the ending of ‘Halfway to the Grave’ was the first book I had ever read that actually made me upset/mad/sad/in an uncontrollable rage. But that was a good thing because it sent me running to the store for ‘One Foot in the Grave’ and pining for ‘At Graves End’. Leaving them on the top of my favorites list, which is hard, because I read a lot of books… And now that I just learned they started from a dream. That rox my sox (I’m a dweeb) because I actually have a story that’s stuck in my head right now that started from a dream that I don’t think is going to leave until I have a chance to write it down.

Anyways, my question is: Do you find aspects of yourself seeping into your characters? Not the whole you, but something small you relate to that became something much bigger and something else? And, after time, have those characters gained minds of their own?

Loved the interview and your books rocked. Just have two questions.
What one thing about your could you tell us that shock us?
Is it possible that your ghouls might get a book of their own.

I was wondering whether or not we would see Cat’s father again.

I was also wondering if Justina would ever finally get her “revenge” on Cat’s father, which enables her to somehow get over her grudge.

Love your books and can’t wait till the next one is released!

Do NOT enter me in the contest. Jeaniene is an auto-buy for me so I have both the books and will pre-order the next one. I actually bought this book because I saw the cover on MySpace and then read the blurb on JF’s MySpace.

I then read bits to my writing partner and she was screaming over the phone, “Stop reading and tell me the author.”

I have such fun terrorizing her that way. hee.

Jeaniene, we met briefly at one of the signings this year… I think. My writing partner, Cai, was telling you about my reading to her over the phone then I walked up. LOL. Or it was vice versa.

Jennifer K asked, “So, what book are you currently reading or what’s next on your TBR pile?”

I just finished FROM DEAD TO WORSE by Charlaine Harris, and really liked it. Next up will be an early look at MAGIC STRIKES by Ilona Andrews. I love having author friends! I get to read their books early.

Adrianne S asked, “Do you find aspects of yourself seeping into your characters? Not the whole you, but something small you relate to that became something much bigger and something else?”

Well, my heroine has bad language. I have bad language. We have that in common. But the similarities pretty much stop there. I don’t want to live the lives my characters have, so I don’t try to bleed myself into my stories. If a piece or two finds their way, it’s accidental, but I’m sure it happens occasionally.

Pam K asked, “What one thing about your could you tell us that shock us?
Is it possible that your ghouls might get a book of their own.”

Hmm, I don’t have much in the shocking department to tell, truthfully. People seem surprised when I tell them that I married my husband at nineteen, and we’re still happily married almost sixteen years later, but I don’t think that’s shocking. I’ll have to work on being more interesting! ;).

My ghouls getting a book of their own - I’d like it, but that might make my editor cry. Ghouls aren’t her favorite character. We had an hour conversation once about how I needed to take some of the gross factor out of their diet, and after brainstorming different things they could eat, she told later that she didn’t eat dinner that night.

Virginia Hendricks and Miki Quick, thanks so much! And thanks again to everyone who came out, commented, asked a question, or told a friend about the interview. You’re the best!

    Hi Jeaniene!

I just wanted to say that I am absolutely in love with your books and I recommend them to everyone. Cat and Bones are both fantastic characters and make me smile for hours on end.
My question is: do you ever experience writer’s block or just being at a complete loss of where to take your story next. And if so, how do you break yourself from that?

    Hi Jeaniene!
I can not wait for December!

Does your publisher decide if there are more then 5 books in the Night Huntress series? Or does that depend on how much books get sold from At Grave’s End and books 4 and 5?
It’s bittersweet for me to think about the series being only 5 books long-I don’t want it to end! And 5 books is better then nothing. Sorry I am kind of greedy, I love your writing!
Is it hard to read other peoples books and still write your own books?

Not sure if you’re still answering questions and I’m pretty confident I’ve maxed out, but one last question for good measure…

How do you know when to call it quits on a manuscript? I mean, how many rejections do you accept before you quit revising and just start something new?

And with that, I’ll leave you be. Hope you have a great night and many thanks for your time today!
    Best,
    Stacy

I see these questions were asked last night after I went to bed (I’m East Coast time) so I’ll answer now.

Takara asked, “Do you ever experience writer’s block or just being at a complete loss of where to take your story next. And if so, how do you break yourself from that?”

I do have spots in a novel where I blank out and know what I want to write next, but have no idea how to transport it from my mind to the page. At these times, I will either (a) bribe myself with sugar to write just a page or two to get the process going, (b) listen to music, hoping it will energize me into tackling that blank screen, or (c) not allow myself to get up from my chair until I’ve written something, damn it! .

Angela asked, “Does your publisher decide if there are more then 5 books in the Night Huntress series? Or does that depend on how much books get sold from At Grave’s End and books 4 and 5? Is it hard to read other peoples books and still write your own books?”

Yes, my publisher decides whether or not to extend my series, and yes, their decision is based on sales. Publishing is a business, and my publisher – like any publisher – weighs their bottom line against whether or not to buy more books from an author.

I love to read, so to me, it’s not hard to read and write, since they are both things I enjoy. My only difficulty is making enough the time to read. Writing has cut into my reading time, but I still find ways to crack a book. I would never give up reading. I frankly don’t understand authors who say they never read.

Stacy Mantle asked, “How do you know when to call it quits on a manuscript? I mean, how many rejections do you accept before you quit revising and just start something new?”

When to call it quits is a decision that should vary from writer to writer. I don’t think there is any universal, “don’t go beyond this number of rejections” formula for when to quit. I garnered over 30 rejections on HALFWAY TO THE GRAVE before I signed with an agent, and if that agent wouldn’t have signed me, I still wasn’t ready to throw in the towel at 30+ rejections. But, while you’re going through the query process, I do recommend writing something else. The more you write, the more you learn, and maybe that next novel is the one that will land you with a contract, instead of the first one.

Julie asked, “Have just read Wedding days from Hell, was this set before ‘One foot in the Grave’? As Bones said he was looking for someone. Also who is you favourite Author?”

WEDDINGS FROM HELL was set before the events of ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE, and it was Cat that Bones was mentioning when he said he was looking for someone.

Favorite author – as I’ve said earlier on in the comment thread, I can’t just pick one. There are so many authors I love and who are on my auto-buy list. Picking one as a favorite would be impossible for me.

    Again, everyone, thanks so much!

    Jeaniene,

    Thanks for the interview!

I know a lot of authors like to write to music. Do you have a sound track that for each book?

    Thanks again!

    Jeaniene,
I have always wondered if a certain season or time of the year is better for writing. Does it give you more inspiration when it is cold or hot outside or around the holidays? Thank-you for chatting with us today :)

Just wanted to say how inspiring your perseverance after 30+ rejections is to an author like myself beginning to query seriously. And as far as Cat being too anything, I guess I’m weird, because I accept most story characters the way I do my friends - yeah, I might not get everything they do, but who cares? Viva La Difference. As long as the story’s good and the writing pulls me in (as yours does) then I’m good to go. Guess I’m easy. ;)

Off to get Weddings from Hell (more Bones!) LOL

    Hi Jeaniene~

Okay, I really hope that these have not already been asked and if they have I apologize.

Do you find it difficult to write the love scenes…like the amazing one in “One Foot in the Grave?”

If you could bring one of your characters to life…who would it be and why them?

Great interview and your writing is absolutely wonderful! I love your books
