Interview, Chat and Contest with Author Adele Dubois
A big welcome to our readers today! Be sure to read to the end of the interview to find out how to WIN the fabulous prizes being offered up.
PLEASE NOTE: This is not a fixed time event, the post just goes live at 10:30 am CDT. You can stop by any time during the day or evening and leave your questions and chat.
PLEASE KEEP SPOILERS TO A MINIMUM. Not all of the readers today have read Adele’s books.
Interview:
Hi Adele!
Welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!
I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been very interesting to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a writer! Readers, if you haven’t done so already please stop by and get your copy of Adele’s newest book release Desert Wild.
BBB: What are the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects of writing?
AD: There are so many challenges to becoming a successful author it’s hard to rate them by degree of difficulty. They’re all tough. But making the choice to be 100% committed to your career is probably the biggest hurdle to jump. Spending the time necessary to do the work is the ultimate test of dedication and endurance—and the key to achieving your goals.
Release day of a new book feels like every holiday rolled into one. The joy that comes with the finished product, and discovering that readers love what you do, is writing’s greatest reward.
BBB: Do you consider Desert Wild a paranormal romance or more erotica with a dash of paranormal? Do you think it is important to distinguish between the two?
AD: Desert Wild is a paranormal erotic romance. What separates erotic romance from erotica is the protagonists’ committed relationship and their Happily Ever After ending. Their love is expressed both sexually and through the resolution of story conflict. The sexual content moves the story forward and is intricately woven into the plot. The sex is not a separate entity. An erotic romance can have paranormal elements, or might be an historical, science fiction, suspense, comedy, or fantasy story.
BBB: How did the idea for Guy, the endearingly kinky GPS System that grants wishes come to you?
AD: The idea literally popped into my head. Since GPS navigation systems lead us to our destinations, I thought, wouldn’t it be great to have a GPS that can locate whatever we need? Since I write erotic romance, the next step in my thought process was, “Why not write about a GPS receiver that locates whatever the heroine needs most?” She might not know what that is at the time—but Guy would. He’s guided by satellite systems positioned in the stars. Together, Guy and my heroines make their way into the desert to begin their adventures of a lifetime.
BBB: What is the most ridiculous thing you have thought about doing to any of your characters?
AD: More ridiculous than sending them into the desert alone, at night? With cougars, mountain lions, bobcats, vipers, gila monsters and rattlesnakes lurking?
BBB: Do you have plans to write more paranormal titles? If so, what’s on the horizon?
AD: I love paranormals and will continue to offer them from time to time. The third book in my Desert series will be Felicia’s story. She’s such a vivid, complicated character; I look forward to a deeper exploration of her personality.
When not writing paranormals, I write contemporary erotic romances. My fall release from Ellora’s Cave is entitled REV ME UP. I’m also working on contemporary romances and women’s fiction novels for the mainstream market under another pen name.
BBB: How much research do you do for your books? How much of it actually gets used in the finished book?
AD: The research for Desert Wild and Desert Fever was extensive and took months to complete. I used almost everything I found. Since both books feature a GPS navigation system with the power to grant wishes, I had to learn how GPS satellite systems work. Ever heard the term Three-D Trilateration? I hadn’t before I started my research.
In addition, it was important to become familiar with the routes from Santa Barbara, California, to The Mojave and The Sonoran Desert, their flora and fauna, weather, and indigenous peoples. Since my hero in Desert Wild, Sonny Wild Horse Hendricks, is a member of the Tohono O’odham Nation (formerly called Papago Indians) I needed to learn about his culture and language. The process became an interesting challenge.
The most fun part of my research came when I scoured the Internet for vintage and modern photographs of Native American men, seeking the one who fit my mental image of Sonny Wild Horse Hendricks. When I discovered photographs of actor and model Rick Mora, I knew I’d found my Desert Wild hero. I contacted Rick to ask permission to use his images during my book promotion, and he very kindly agreed. He also offered to add my blog link to his Twilight movie fan page. Rick played the part of a shapeshifting wolf in the film. When you scroll through my blog you’ll see plenty of pictures of him. He’s amazing.
BBB: How do you keep track of your world building?
AD: I keep file folders on my computer and also stack paper files on my desk. They’re there whenever I need to refresh my memory about a story detail. I also take notes as I write to keep track of the loose ends that need to be tied.
BBB: What do you feel are the benefits of the new electronic readers such as Kindle 2 or Sony Digital Book Reader to the environment?
AD: Hand-held electronic readers can hold 1,000 books. Any one of those books can be deleted with the touch of a finger. If I took 1,000 print books from my library and set them on my curb in recycle bins for pick-up, the distinction between digital and print’s environmental impact would become instantly clear.
BBB: What impact do electronic readers create on the bottom line for authors in the end? Do you feel they have a negative impact or positive, or no impact at all that you can see?
AD: The jury is still out on its author impact while the debate rages. As far as I can tell, it’s a moot point. Digital publishing is a reality that’s not going away. In the very near future, I think all books will be downloadable on e-readers, phones, computers, and whatever other technologies are developed. Many books are already available in multiple formats. I think readers will love having a variety of options.
I’ll always love the feel of the traditional print book in my hands. That’s one of the reasons I can’t wait for my print release DESERT NECTAR to hit the bookstores. Yet I love the convenience of e-books and audio books. Let the customer decide which format works best for them.
BBB: What other projects are you currently working on?
AD: My upcoming print release DESERT NECTAR will be available through Ellora’s Cave, Amazon, and local bookstores in September. I’ll be signing DESERT NECTAR at RomantiCon October 9-11 in Akron, Ohio. My contemporary erotic romance REV ME UP will be released this fall. Dates will be posted on my website at http://www.adeledubois.com/
BBB: Can you tell us about Desert Wild and the general storyline that drives it?
AD: Here’s the Desert Wild story summary:
Sonny Wild Horse of the Tohono O’odham Nation is a danger to a woman’s heart. Though he lusts after Caitlyn Spencer, his desire to live inside two conflicting worlds—the Sonoran Desert of his youth and the California coast where his future as a photographer is assured—tears the lovers apart.
When Sonny disappears inside America’s most hostile desert, Caitlyn borrows a unique convertible and embarks on a desperate search. The car is equipped with a powerful but endearingly kinky GPS navigator that grants wishes. Though not exactly a genie, Guy locates whatever his driver needs most.
And Caitlyn needs to connect erotically with Sonny. Again and again. If only she can find him in time.
BBB: If your GPS system had a theme song, what would it be?
AD: Wild at Heart by Gloriana.
BBB: If you could shapeshift, what animal would you be? And why?
AD: I’d be strong and self-sufficient like a lioness or leopard.
BBB: Name one character from ANY literary work that you would choose to have dinner with and why.
AD: I only get to choose one? LOL. There are many authors with whom I’d like to share a meal. As for story characters, one of my favorites is Anita Blake from the Laurell K. Hamilton horror series. Now that would be an interesting dinner!
Thanks so much for inviting me to spend time with you! I hope you enjoy Desert Wild and Desert Fever.

Adele,
What a wonderful interview - I have yet to read your works, but have to say that I am duly charmed into doing so! I can hardly wait to purchase Desert Wild. I also really liked what you had to say about ebooks - I am a huge supporter of the movement, as a means of reducing our negative impact on our environment. That doesn’t mean that I don’t love a good book in my hands, just the sensation of the pages under my fingers. The smell too is enticing for me, but having a small home, I am quite frankly running out space. Congrats on the book!

I’m pleased to be here and look forward to answering questions and chatting with you about DESERT WILD.

Cyd J–Thanks so much for visiting and commenting. I hope you enjoy reading about my magical GPS system with the power to grant wishes.
I absolutely love my morning coffee, particularly if the flavor is bold. Starbucks or Dunkin’ Donuts brands. Yum. I don’t drink anything with caffeine, though, so all my coffee or tea is decaf. I love iced tea in the afternoon and with dinner.

Hi Adele!
Thank you so much for taking time out of your busy writing schedule to be with us today!
If you had one wish that Guy could grant you, what would it be?
Naughty or Nice?
and of course DETAILS woman! LOL

Hi Adele, glad your here with us today. I haven’t read your story yet, I have a bit of trouble with the online reading (I need a portable computer). I had a question for you though…
What is one thing that your readers would be shocked to learn about you?

Hi, Adele. I think the wish granting GPS is very cool! I wish mine would do laundry.
Are you a plotter or a pantster? Do your characters ever try to boss you around?
I’ve just sent a friend request on Facebook.
[Reply]
A wish granting GPS system would be fantastic. What an interesting idea for a story. I will read your book!
[Reply]
Steph–Glad you enjoy my Desert books. Thanks so much for visiting and posting. You’re a peach.
Rachel–Hmm, since we’re talking about fiction here–I’d ask Guy to locate a cozy house at the beach where my husband and I could live all year long. The house would be inexpensive (that’s the fictional part)and located in a quiet area (another fiction). I’d fill it with seashells (I collect them) and books and eat fresh caught seafood every day. That’s my idea of heaven on earth. (Guess my wishes arent’ very naughty, huh?)
Elie–Shocked? Geez, I’m such an ordinary person. My hair is naturally curly. How about that? Not shocking enough, I suppose.
OK, here’s a good one, and this is true. I’m not making this up. When I was a journalist and political columnist in the Caribbean I lived with armed bodyguards 24/7 for awhile. Seems I annoyed some powerful government officials with my pro-democracy articles.
I hope you’ll download DESERT WILD and lmk how you liked the book. My print book DESERT NECTAR will be available in September if print works better for you.
Thanks for your visit and interesting question.

Qwill–Guy doesn’t do laundry, but he might lead to you the laundromat of your dreams. Maybe a hot guy owns the place and wants to make mad love to you the moment you walk in. (Sounds like a great opening for a story. LOL.)
I plot the general outline of my stories after doing my research, and then let my muse fill in the twists and turns. So I’m both a plotter and panster. I will say that Felicia in DESERT WILD was a tough character to tame. Her personality is so strong I had to fight to keep her from taking over the story. That’s why she’ll get a book of her own. There are lots of possibilties with that character.
Thanks so much for joining the chat. I’ll friend you on Facebook. Hope you enjoy DESERT WILD.
Beth–Thank you for your kind words. I love my GPS named Guy and hope readers do, too. Please lmk if you enjoy DESERT WILD. You can email me at author@adeledubois.com

Sharon K.–Before I turned to fiction writing full-time, I owned my own retail business and took care of my two children. I’ve always incorporated my writing into other areas of my life, and became a montly columnist and feature writer for a collectibles magazine. Before that, I wrote for a newspaper. I quit my stint as a journalist when I discovered I just didn’t have the nerves of steel the business required. I’m much better suited to creative writing.
Thank you for taking time out of your day to be here.

Wow, that was shocking, really cool too. It sounds like you’ve had some life adventures to use as ideas for your books.
So, it sounds like your stories are pretty steams. How would you rate the STEAM on a scale of 1-5 (one being warm and 5 being steamy)?
If you have kids or nieces/nephews, at what age would you let them read your books? Would you say a rating of R or X?
I really like you story idea, it sounds original. I also like your cover shown above. I have kids and worry sometimes about the covers, some of them are sort of …well…let’s just say some don’t leave too much to the imagination. (LOL)
[Reply]
I know I need to by one of those book cover thingies, I really love the cover of Intimate Art. Wow.
I was trying to make friends at myspace, but I need a special email. Please let me know where I can find it. Thanks.
[Reply]
Elie N.–My erotic romances are written for adults only over 18. The content is sexually explicit. They are very steamy and leave little to the imagination. If you’ve never read an erotic romance I think you’ll be in for a pleasant surprise. My stories are love stories that take place between a man and a woman. Although my books are graphic, I don’t write the really kinky stuff.
MySpace has been acting really weird lately. I’ll see if I can figure out what the problem is with the friend link. Thanks.
Nice to hear from you again.

My question for you is Were you ever on the desert at night, and if so, where was it? What did you learn about that experience. Just curious since I live in the desert of Arizona and have often been out in it at night. The night sounds are unique and the smells of the flora are very unusual.

Shawna–Thanks so much for the social networking you’ve done and for your visit.
To answer your question about my cover art, all of Ellora’s Cave book covers are done by the art department. After they receive the summary of a book, they design a cover that corresponds with the subject matter. I do offer ideas. I suggested body paint for my book INTIMATE ART and the final product the artist produced blew me away. The artist uses symbols or plot points from each book to create a unique cover.

I tried to capture those images in my book by describing the Queen of The Night flower, Desert Lavender, Ragged Rock Flowers, the scent of the earth and more. I hope I did the desert justice.

Chris–I hope you enjoy reading my stories. Please lmk if you do. My email addy is author@adeledubois.com/ To answer your questions, my first short story was published in a newspaper Sunday magazine at age 19.
The best advice I can give a new writer is to self-edit and polish your work until it’s your very best. Find critique partners who are further along in their careers than you are. Submit to an agent or editor only when the story shines. Poor spelling, grammar, or punctuation will bring an automatic rejection. An editor at a major NY house said recently, she’s looking for PERFECTION. That’s a tall order.
Thanks so much for your participation.
Rebecca–Adele is my real name. Pen names offer a limited amount of privacy, which is why most authors use them. I know of editors who use nome de plumes too. I write about 4-6 hours per day and spend another several hours on networking and promotion. The average time it takes to complete a full-length novel of 85-125K is about 9-12 months. I write a novella like DESERT FEVER or DESERT WILD in aprox. three months before the book goes into edits. Times vary, of course, depending on the number of hours spent writing per day.

Ashley–Discover the fun of erotic romance! I hope you enjoy my books. Please do lmk. My email addy is author@adeledubois.com/ Thanks so much for your participation in my event.
Valorie–Great question! I have had a crush on Brad Pitt since the 1980’s. (I guess that means I’m very loyal). Other men I find attractive are: actors Benjamin Bratt and Rick Mora, bodybuilder and fitness expert Sagi Kalev, actor Pierce Brosnan, and a few newcomers. There are lots of pics of men I’ve deemed hunk-worthy on my blog at http://www.adeledubois.com/blog
Thanks so much for your visit and fun question.

Susan–I’m always happy to have a new fan. Thank you for your interest. Do lmk if your readers’ group enjoys my erotic fiction. That should be quite a lively discussion! Contact me at author@adeledubois.com/ Thank you for joining the chat and posting a comment.
Cheryl–I love to read and fit one hour into my schedule every night before bed. Occasionally I read for fifteen minutes at lunchtime, unless I am deep into one of my own books and can’t afford the distraction of someone else’s story. I tend to read books written by women. Romance, erotic romance, women’s fiction, urban fantasy, horror.
Thanks so much for interesting question.

Adele I have put your books on my TBB list. I also agree with you about the environmental impact of books. I’m concerned that when I purchase e-books that the authors are recieving their proper royalties. I also enjoy regular books, especially when I’m feeling ill. Thank you for sharing today.
Also, I am a current subscriber to BBB.

Kristina–The best book I ever read was MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA by Arthur Golden. It’s a masterpiece work with absolutely brilliant writing. The movie didn’t capture the intricasies of the novel. Another masterpiece work is OUTLANDER by Diana Gabaldon. I also think that Stephen King and Laurell K. Hamilton are artistic geniuses. Thanks for your visit and interesting question.
Sharon M–Authors always receive royalties on their e-books when the books are purchased through their publisher or authorized resellers like Fictionwise, All Romance eBooks, etc. The only time we are denied rightful payment for our original works are when books are shared, sent to illegal file-sharing sites, or pirated. File-sharing has become a huge problem that has negatively impacted the entire publishing industry. Readers can insure that authors continue to produce new books by purchasing them through the authors’ publishers or certified resellers.
Thank you for visiting and posting a comment. I hope you enjoy my books.

Thanks for stopping by - I love the distinction you make about erotic romance vs. erotica some people don’t know there is a difference. I prefer erotica romance I like my HEA.
As for your topic of choice - it sounds amazing a GPS that knows your needs - I wish I had one of those.
The only question I have for you is this - What made you first pick up a pen and decide to write?

Sorry that I’m a day late.. I got so wrapped up in a book, and finished it earlier and had to take care of ALL that I neglected yesterday and this morning.
My norm question (hopefully no one asked in my stead) if you could collaborate on a project, writing or not, alive or dead, who would you chose? And are they your literary idol or not

MarnieColette–(Love your name). You are right that there’s a difference between erotica and erotic romance. Romance readers enjoy their HEA endings. To answer your question, I wrote my first poems around age 10 and subbed them to children’s magazines. I’ve had the desire to express myself on paper since my earliest memories. Maybe that’s because I’m the product of two artistic parents. Thanks so much for your participation and enthusiasm.
Raonaid–”Got so wrapped up in a book…” is music to an author’s ears. I hope you enjoy my books as much. In response to your interesting question, I would absolutely love to collaborate with Laurell K. Hamilton. I’ve mentioned her or her characters a few times during this event, because I believe she’s an artistic genuis. Her imagination is amazing. Since she writes rather dark paranormals and horror, and I write light paranormals, I think we’d balance each other well. Too bad she doesn’t need me. LOL. Thank you for sharing such a generous amount of your time with me.

I know I am late and I am so sorry! I love the covers you have for all of your books. Very yummy! lol
Do you have a ritual that you do before you sit down to write? Also, are you a write by the seat of your pants or a planner?
Thank you for stopping by BBB today or yesterday. lol It was great reading all of your answers.

Hey Adele….. What is your favorite type of charecter and why?? Also what is the nicest gift and the naughtiest gift you have ever recieved and who from???? Lol By the way I love all your books!

Katie–Thank you for coming to my event. Glad to hear you like my book covers. I hope you enjoy my stories, too. To answer your questions, I am a combination planner/pantster. I research, take notes, summarize my story, and know what the plotline will be before I start. The twists and turns happen as I write. I don’t require any special rituals before writing, though I used to when I was a beginner. Now all I need is my quiet office with the door closed.

Amber–I’m so glad to know you enjoy my books. Thank you. I have two releases coming out in the fall I hope you also enjoy.
I like strong, good-looking, independent characters that work well under pressure. Nicest and naughtiest gifts? My two children. For both reasons. LOL.
Thanks for visiting and posting.
