Last Hope by Moira Rogers
A group of humans targeting supernaturals just made a big mistake: assaulting the girlfriend of Lars Nilsson, an alpha male coyote shape-shifter. Adrian Torres, an alpha wolf moonlighting as a P. I., has been hired to track down the men behind the attacks. When he gets word of what happened to Claire Franklin, he knows things are about to get hairy.
Kiara Avery is at the scene when the battered Claire is found. Her protective instincts are brought out when she feels the disgust of the officers toward the young coyote female. Being an empath has its advantages, including the ability to tell when someone may be in danger. Kiara’s decision to watch over Claire at the hospital brings her face to face with Adrian, a man whose desire beats against her like a fierce wind. Unable to control their mutual attraction, Adrian and Kiara begin a whirlwind romance that runs much deeper than sex. His inner wolf wants to make her his, and his human side doesn’t have any objections.
Already a target of the HLH, the violent human faction behind the attacks on the “freaks”, Kiara is further put into danger because of her relationship with Adrian. She’s the perfect pawn to use against the alpha wolf, and the HLH isn’t above using her as cannon fodder.
Moira Rogers has amazed me yet again. The dazzling duo has a way of making you pant in excitement while melting in emotion in a single scene. Last Hope was no exception, earning it 5 tombstones. The characters are true to their nature, refusing to apologize for what they are and expecting those around them to do the same. In fact, everything about this story was well done—the plot remained solid without melting into the use clichéd devises, the relationships cut straight to the morrow of emotion instead of merely scratching the surface to propel the action, and the sex scenes…wow…let me just say that you shouldn’t try to read them at work unless you’re prepared for your boss to ask if you’re coming down with something because you’re fanning yourself with the report she asked you to complete.
