Untimely Partners by Karen Hulene Bartell
Keiranne West is approaching her thirtieth birthday with some trepidation. Since her mother passed away at thirty, Keiranne, a freelance photographer, cannot help but worry that she might have the same fate. While photographing a dog show, her friend Elizabeth notices a silent auction item that she feels would interest Keiranne…a Trek of the Spirit tour to Teotihuacán, Mexico for only fifty dollars. Though Keiranne is unsure, the idea of spending her birthday alone does not appeal to her, having recently broken off her engagement. She looks down at the turquoise bracelet her mother presented to her and wonders what her mother would have done.
When Keiranne arrives in Teotihuacán, she meets several other members of the tour group, and they walk to a nearby tavern for dinner. Though she had not planned to tell anyone her birthday was approaching, the waiters were singing to someone at a nearby table. Her whispered comment was overheard by one of her dinner companions, Dorian, who is a scholar of the Mayan calendar. He proceeds to explain the meaning behind Keiranne’s birth date as she listens politely. As the group returns to the hotel, Keiranne notices a small white dog who seems to be waiting for Keiranne to pet her.
The next morning, Keiranne and the rest of the group attend the introductory lecture before touring the ruins. Keiranne chooses to start the tour at the designated ending point and head back to the main entrance. She is in awe of the beauty of the scenery and hurries to climb the Pyramid of the Sun by noon in order to get the best pictures. After an hour passes, she realizes she is alone on top of the pyramid…except for the white dog she met last night. Keiranne continues her sightseeing journey and finally enters the museum. She wanders through the museum, looking at various artifacts, when she is drawn to an exhibit of human sacrifices, skeletons found at the Temple of Quetzalcoatl. She leans forward over the low wall, is pushed from behind, and falls, much father than the display dictates. When Keiranne lands and regains her footing, she notices the artwork is no longer weathered, the gargoyles unsupported by metal…in fact, the only thing she finds familiar is the presence of the white dog. Where – or when – is Keiranne?
I loved this book! Keiranne’s strength in facing her fear of turning thirty, her willingness to leave her comfort zone and go on the Mexico trip, and her determination to help Tlalocelot in the search for truth were impressive. The descriptions of the Mayan temples in their earlier incarnations were clear and easy to envision, as were the descriptions of the ruins. This book has lots of intrigue and several unexpected twists, but all mysteries are solved at the end, though not in the way you might have expected. Keep an eye on the small white dog!
