Interview:
Hi Stacia!
Welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!
I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been very interesting to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a writer! Readers, if you haven’t done so already please stop by and get your copy of Stacia’s newest book release Demon Inside.
BBB: What are the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects of writing?
SK: Um, I think the challenges and the rewards are really the same. It’s always a challenge to try and tell the story well, to make the writing itself as clean and tight as it can possibly be, to try to convey to the reader exactly what you want to convey. But it’s exciting too.
BBB: Do you consider your writing paranormal romance or urban fantasy and do you think it is important to distinguish between the two?
SK: I do think it’s important to distinguish between them, absolutely. Romance is romance, and has a Happily-Ever-After ending. I don’t want to call my work romance and let down readers who rightfully expect that. But the Demons series–the Megan Chase books–definitely have a much stronger romantic subplot, romantic emphasis, than the upcoming Downside books. The relationship between Megan and Greyson is a big part of the Demons books.
BBB: How did the idea for the Megan Chase series come to you?
SK: Oh, gosh, it’s been so long I don’t remember it well! But I do remember a lot of agent blogs complaining about the phrase “personal demons” being used in queries. And I thought it would be really fun to use the ancient idea of those demons and do something fun with it. Originally Megan had written a book, but I thought for her to use that “slay your demons” tagline in all seriousness would make her not really the sort of character I had in mind. So the radio show came from that, and there you go. Malleus, Maleficarum, and Spud came along almost immediately after the radio idea, too. The names made me giggle and I thought I HAD to write those guys.
BBB: What is the most ridiculous thing that you have thought about doing to any of your characters?
SK: Oh, gosh. I think of doing all sorts of hideous things to them, all the time. I have to admit, almost every sex scene I write I’m tempted to get someone’s legs caught in their pants and make them fall over. I’ve envisioned spilling things on them, putting them in too-short pants, dribbling tomato sauce down their chins…all manner of silliness.
BBB: Do you plan on keeping the December Quinn pseudonym, or will she be retired?
SK: December is currently retired. I never say never, but at the moment my focus isn’t so much on romance.
BBB: How much research do you do for your books? How much of it actually gets used in the finished book?
SK: Hmm. It depends. I’m doing research all the time, because I read a lot. But since I don’t write straight historicals (December wrote a medieval, but that was the only one) I only use bits and pieces of it. A lot of the demons in the Demons books are real. And the witchcraft in the Downside books is based on British Traditional Witchcraft, which I’ve studied for some time and was a lot of fun to write.
BBB: How do you keep track of your world building?
SK: It’s all in my head. Every once in a while I’ll make a note somewhere. I keep thinking I should write them all down or keep them in files or something, but I’m too lazy/busy.
BBB: Is there a chance that some of the other characters in the Megan Chase series will get books of their own?
SK: Actually, the first book I started in that world wasn’t about Megan, it was about Tera. I’d still love to give her a book of her own. I even know who the hero is, but I won’t tell.
BBB: What do you feel are the benefits of the new electronic readers such as Kindle 2 or Sony Digital Book Reader to the environment?
SK: Well, less paper, of course. So more trees and less waste.
BBB: What impact do electronic readers create on the bottom line for authors in the end? Do you feel they have a negative impact or positive, or no impact at all that you can see?
SK: Well, on the whole I’d say it’s positive, but piracy is a big issue for me and in that respect I think the rise of ereaders has had a negative impact. I recently found a listing online of torrent files; Personal Demons had been downloaded thirty thousand times. That’s a huge number, and has a huge negative effect on me and my publisher; on my chances for getting future contracts, on the economy itself. Even if only one percent of those who downloaded it free had bought it, that would have made a difference to my numbers.
Of course, that isn’t to say I think all people with ereaders are pirating, not at all! But it is worrisome, how much of it actually occurs.
BBB: What other projects are you currently working on?
SK: Right now I’m getting ready to start a new Urban Fantasy series, a sort of alternate history one, set in England. And of course I’ve just turned in the third Megan Chase book and am getting ready for the release of the first Downside book in November. I also have a YA project I’m about halfway through.
BBB: Can you tell us about the Megan Chase series and the general storyline that drives it?
SK: Well. Megan is a psychologist and psychic, who is hired to do a therapy call-in show for a local radio station. The tagline for the show is “How can I slay your personal demons?” Megan hates the tagline, but what’s worse is that because of her psychic abilities, the personal demons–the Biblical Yezer Ha-Ra–think she’s seriously threatening them. Enter more local demons, who tend to group themselves in mafia-like “families.” Those families also see Megan as a potential weapon for themselves, and at the end of the first book Megan becomes part of one of those families herself. So the subsequent books are about her trying to balance that with her work, and trying to adjust, and about whether her demon lover Greyson Dante is really in love with her or has ulterior motives. Really, they’re about Megan trying to find her way in the world, and trying to get everything she’s dreamed of.
BBB: Do you have any stray plot bunnies running around in your head and do you think something may come of them?
SK: I always have them in there, yes. I’d love to eventually do Tera’s book. I’d love to do something more with Greyson’s father, who’s mentioned in the second one; I think seeing those two together would be a lot of fun. And there are some big things that happened in the third book that I of course can’t talk about, but would love to play with more.
BBB: In Accustomed to His Fangs, you poked fun at the stereotypical old school vampire. Are there any particular classic vampire traits that drive you crazy, or do you think it’s all open to interpretation.
SK: Oh, I think it’s all interpretation. I love vampires and always have. I had a lot of fun poking fun at the stereotypes, but it was done out of genuine fondness.
BBB: If your series had a theme song, what would it be?
SK: Hmm. That’s a really good question! Maybe the Megan Chase books would be something by The Replacements, like “I Will Dare”? Or maybe Mary’s Danish’s “Hellflower.” The Downside books are probably Radio Birdman’s “Love Kills” or the Lazy Cowgirls’ “Goddamn Bottle.” Or tons more. The books all have soundtracks, and a lot of the time they overlap on some songs, but to sum up the whole thing with one song is really hard!
BBB: If you could shapeshift, what animal would you be? And why?
SK: Oh, hmm. A lion or tiger. Some kind of big cat. Or even a small cat. That would be pretty cool.
BBB: Name one character from the Team Seattle books that Megan would choose to have dinner with and why.
SK: Megan would probably choose someone like Caitlin Kittredge’s Luna or Pete. Or, with the whole demon thing, she’d probably get along with Richelle Mead’s Georgina. That would be an interesting dinner.
BBB: Do you find it difficult to switch between urban fantasy and erotica?
SK: No, not at all. I have fun with both.
BBB: How has the transition of moving back to the US been going? What do you miss about living in the UK?
SK: Oh, gosh. I miss fish and chips. I miss Drumsticks lollies; they’re these chewy fruit suckers and I used to go through like three a day. I can’t get them here at all, no companies will ship them here! It’s great to be home but I really do miss England more than I thought I would.

Hi Stacia. Aside from UF and other paranormal fantasy, what genres do you enjoy reading in for fun?
[Reply]
Hi Stacia!!! So happy you could stop by.
The m=Megan Chase series sounds really interesting, but I’m curious what are the new Downside books about? I’ve seen the covers around the net, but not a good understanding of the world.

Hi Stacia,
Lol great interview, and I loved that line about you wanting to make someone get trapped in their pants and fall over in a sex scene.
The series sounds nice
Speaking about sex, is is easy or hard to write a sex scene, cos I honestly don’t think I could.

Oh Stacia I loved your answer about what you considered doing to your characters during a sex scene. Too perfect sex is always a pet peeve of mine. Sex can be clumsy, let’s see it.
I have added your name to my TBR list. Thanks for the interview.

Stacia, I’m curious…what was the hardest part of getting published in the first place? Getting an agent? Selling the book once you had an agent? Edits? Inquiring minds want to know!

Thirty-thousand downloads!?! What a staggering number. I can’t imagine what you must feel like. People were slapped hard with fines for pirating songs, I hope they get worse for stealing books.

Hi everyone! Thanks so much for stopping in!
Hey Carol! Great to see you here!
I read all kinds of books. I love mysteries and read a ton of them. I read thrillers and noir and horror. Romance, of course. Really, I read any type of book at all.
Hi Heather C.! Oh, wow. In a nutshell? They’re about drugs, ghosts, ghettos, punk rock, and witchcraft. My husband called the first one “Ghostbusters meets Escape from New York.” But here’s the back cover copy, because that’s probably not as helpful as it could be:
“The world is not the way it was. The dead have risen and constantly attack the living. The powerful Church of Real Truth, in charge since the government fell, has sworn to reimburse citizens being harassed by the deceased. Consequently, there are many false claims of hauntings from those hoping to profit. Enter Chess Putnam, a fully-tattooed witch and freewheeling Debunker and ghost hunter. She’s got a real talent for nailing the human liars or banishing the wicked dead. But she’s keeping a dark secret from the Church: a little drug problem that’s landed her in hot and dangerous water.
Chess owes a murderous drug lord named Bump a lot of money. And Bump wants immediate payback. All Chess has to do is dispatch a very nasty species of undead from an old airport. But the job involves black magic, human sacrifice, a nefarious demonic creature, and crossing swords with enough wicked energy to wipe out a city of souls. Toss in lust with a rival gang leader and a dangerous attraction to Bump’s ruthless enforcer, and Chess begins to wonder if the rush is really worth it. Hell, yeah.”
I also have on my blog the copy HarperVoyager has written for it in the UK: http://www.staciakane.net/2009/07/17/first-post-on-the-new-site/ (It’s longer than the US copy so I hesitate to C&P it here.) The book’s page on my website has Chapter One excerpted as well.
I’m really excited about the books and the world, and hoping readers like it as much as I do! Thanks!
Thanks Linda!
Ha, funny you mention that. Sex scenes aren’t hard to write (no pun intended) but they are challenging. Last summer I did an entire, very long, series on my blog about writing them. You can find it here if you’re interested. People seemed to like it, so that was nice; it got a lot of comments on my livejournal as well.
Hi Jackie! Lol, I looove Nick. And yes, you will definitely be seeing him in the third book, and finding out more about him. Oh, and did you know? I didn’t get a chance to put this in the third book, but his name is actually Nicodemus. Just a fun little background fact about him.
Thanks!
Hi Chris! Oh, gosh, a least favorite genre? I don’t read a lot of science fiction, I guess. But I can’t really think of a genre I don’t like.
Thanks Elaine!
I did manage to put a little clumsiness in a scene in the last Downside book, which was fun. Nobody fell over but there were some…minor issues with clothing.
It was fun.
Oh, wow, Jennifer. The hardest part is writing a good book, honestly. Because it all hinges on that; a good concept, strong writing, realistic but not too much so characters…without those things you won’t get far. Even with those things you might not. But I’m a firm believer that if you work hard enough you will eventually get there, and that’s all down to you. Probably not what you wanted to hear huh? Sorry!

Hi Vickie! Thanks so much!
Thank you so much, Kym. It’s difficult, because on the one hand I don’t want to begrudge people books. But on the other…those numbers don’t just affect my royalties, they affect whether or not I get offered another contract, you know? So it hurts everyone in the long run, not just writers but people who enjoy our work.
Hi Darkreader! Oh, I love my YA project, lol. I don’t like to talk much about works-in-progress because I don’t want to jinx them, but it’s about demon summoning and a teenage witch who’s always been on the outside, who has this irresponsible mother who keeps urging her to go out and get drunk and have sex and be a “normal” teenager. Which is vague, I know, but…
I’m really pleased with it so far.
Hi Hayley! Wow, thank you so much! *blush*

tell us a little about the path it took to get your first book published. how many rejections (if any) did you receive? did you know anyone in the publishing field previously? Hi Seraphina! Well, I started out in erotic romance and really made that and the ebook industry my focus in the beginning. I did get rejections–I submitted my first non-erotic, my first novel ever, a medieval romance that really, realy sucked in retrospect–to an agent and it got rejected, and I was crushed. But determined. I’m not really sure what kept me going; I’d say Miss Snark and other agent blogs had a huge influence there. The message that I could keep trying and keep getting better was really powerful, and this was something I’d always wanted to do.
Once I started writing erotic I started getting accepted. And I really enjoyed it, but I also wanted to branch out a bit. So I wrote PERSONAL DEMONS, which was my first non-erotic non-romance, and it just clicked. It was so fun to write. I submitted it to a few agents, one of which offered me a revise-and-resub, but I just didn’t agree with the changes. The others rejected it, maybe five in all. But around that time I discovered Juno Books, and really liked the things editor Paula Guran had to say. So I took a chance and submitted to her, and she accepted it, which was very exciting.
UNHOLY GHOSTS I submitted to several agents as well. Got another revise-and-resub from a fantastic agent. Got a few rejections. But by that time I knew how subjective the industry is. I knew a rejection doesn’t mean another agent won’t love it or an editor won’t. I think that’s really what kept me going and what still does, is that knowledge. I submitted to the man who became my agent on a Monday morning. he requested the full three hours later, and offered representation on Wednesday. We did some revisions and got the first offer six weeks after submitting.
Rejection is just part of the process. It doesn’t mean no one will ever love your work. It’s just business. And that’s really my advice: Just keep going. If it’s something you love doing, keep going. There’s always another story waiting for you, and another chance.
Hi Muse! Lol, for fun I usually drink.
No, seriously, I’m a homebody. I get antsy when I’m away from my work too long. So my idea of a real relaxing vacation is sitting on the couch watching movies. I know, real exciting huh?
Lol, TM. I wish I could, seriously.
Hi Roanaid! Wow, what a great question! If I could collaborate with anyone? Poe. As for my heroes, there’s a few, actually. Poe. Dickens. Kathleen Winsor. Neil Gaiman. Cornell Woolrich. Jeph Loeb. Alan Moore. Steven Dobyns and of course Stephen King. Barbara Michaels. Herman Wouk. I recently was completely bowled over by Tana French. And of course my friend Caitlin Kittredge, whose work I think is amazing.

Wow Stacia!!! The Downside sounds awesome!!! I’ll keep my eye out for them.

Hey Stacia,
I have heard great things about you and am definitely putting you on my TBR list. Great to have you here at BBB.
Lori
[Reply]
Ha, Bridget, that one’s easy. Teleportation. Think how much sleep you’d be able to get, and the money you’d save on gas and train/airfare.
Thanks Amanda! Oh, I absolutely believe. It’s harder to believe all that doesn’t exist, in this big huge world.
Thank you Elaine! It depends on the project, really. The Demons books are lighter and funnier, so I do make an effort there. The Downside books aren’t; there’s some humor, but on the whole they’re much darker, so I tone it down for those. It is hard, because on the one hand you want people to enjoy reading them, but on the other you don’t want to take them out of the experience with inappropriately placed humor, you know?
Oh, wow, Shellie. I was a voracious reader as a kid, and still am. I loved ghost stories and horror stories; books like “The House of Dies Drear,” or one about Civil War soldier ghosts I vaguely recall. I remember a book called “Stranger than Science” that was one of my favorites and absolutely terrified me. But then I also loved the Ramona books and the Betsy-Tacy books; it was hard to find good scary stuff in the early 80s, where I lived. Little curly-headed blonde girls were supposed to read happy books, not books about demon footprints in snow and dead bodies rotting in cellars. But I also remember reading “Harriet the Spy” and being so inspired by her notebooks and thinking of different ways to fill them, and about how I didn’t really have people to spy on so I could make things up, and how that just seemed so fantastic.
[Reply]
Another question! : )
Is there any chance of Megan’s series expanding beyond three books, or is it set pretty firmly as a trilogy?
[Reply]
Hi Kainani! I’d love to visit the Scottish highlands; I’ve been to Edinburgh and loved it but never further north. I’d love to visit Russia, Australia, New Zealand, and/or Egypt. Or Alaska. I have trouble making up my mind, lol. Thanks!
Thanks Heather! I hope you like them!
Thank you, Lori! I appreciate it!
[Reply]
Welcome to BBB Stacia! Thanks for coming to play with us. Alas, I too have yet to read any of your books but they sound great and are definately on my TBR list.
Rachel asked about what Seatle character you would like to see your character go to dinner with. Along that same line, what character (any era/genre) would YOU like to dine with?
[Reply]
Hi Stace- I am doing a driveby..while listening to Born to Lose..What a pleasure to see you here!! I love all you have written but can’t wait for the peeps to sink their teeth into the Downside..that will be exciting!!

[Reply]
Hey, Jackie! Well, it really depends. If DEMON INSIDE sells well so Pocket wants me to do a fourth book, I’d certainly be open to it. But it depends on my schedule as well, and everything else. So never say never, really.
[Reply]
Hi Stacia! I haven’t tried your books yet but after reading your interview I have to say that I need to add these to my TBR pile. Congratulations on the new release!
[Reply]
I really enjoy young adults novels, and look forward to yours. What made you decide to write a YA novel? Do you find it more or less challenging than writing for adults?
(I RSVP’d)
[Reply]
Your strumpet course last summer was one of the most helpful pieces on writing sex scenes I’ve read. Do you plan on publishing at any point, either in print or electronic format?
[Reply]
I love that she’d want to be a cat if she were a shapeshifter. Very cool!

I RSVPed.
I read somewhere that you had at one time been a phone psychic. What was the most off the wall prediction that you made to someone and did it come true? I love the idea that so many exceptional paranormal writers are writing for the YA market. I had always felt this was an area that would help turn kids on to reading and not only benefit the writers now but also later as they make reading a part of their lifetime experience. Also tell us about your YA project.
[Reply]
Hi Stacia,
I loved Personal Demons & just picked up Demon Inside. I guess I’m a little behind the others that have already gotten it and read it. I am looking forward to it and to Demon Possesed.

Thanks for being here today Stacia!
Do you still do readings? Cause MAN (or should I say WOMAN) I could really use one.
Can you tell us what you will be speaking about at Dragon Con or are you just going for fun?
[Reply]
Hearing raves about your books and now have a glimpse as to why. Have added your titles to my wishlist. Thanks for being here today!
Questions: Do you think a woman can successfully and effectively write a novel with a male as the main character? I’m blank on thinking of some examples, can you?
[Reply]
Hmm. That’s a really good question, Becky. My default for those questions is usually either Rhett Butler or Batman.
Lol, Synde, after I sent the interview in I realized Born to Lose and Search & Destroy are actually better theme songs for the Downside books, but it was too late.
{{hug}}
Thanks Katie! I hope I don’t disappoint you.
Thanks Dancechica! Actually, I didn’t plan to attempt YA, but the character came to me so strongly I decided I had to give it a try. So let’s hope I do a good job finishing it and that it sells!
Thanks so much, Jackie! I do, yeah, I’d really like to. It’s just a matter of finding the time, because I’d like to expand it a bit as well.
Lol, thanks Beth!
Hi Lisa! Actually, we didn’t usually find out, because people didn’t call back or they called back at different times or on different days. But I think I did a pretty good job with them; they were actually tarot readings, and I discovered early on that a lot of people just needed some reassurance and a little pep talk. So sometimes it was actually really fun. And I totally agree about YA. The more people read the better! The YA project is kind of a dark little thing about a loner witch and her crazy mom. I’m really excited about it. Thanks!
[Reply]
Hi there Donna! Thank you so much, that’s really amazing to hear!
Hey Rachel! For you? Drop me an email, girl! & thanks for having me!
I have a vague idea about my DragonCon panels, yeah. The schedule isn’t set in stone yet but I’m pretty sure I’ll be speaking about music and writing (specifically about writing punk characters & music realistically) and about world-building, and I believe there’s a demon panel I’ll be on. With Mike Mignola. Which stuns me into insensibility.
Thanks so much, Shirley! And hell yes, I do!! Earlier I mentioned Tana French; her first novel “In the Woods” has a male MC and is stunning. But that’s just one, off the top of my head; there’s thousands. The Scarlet Pimpernel was written by a woman. What about Frankenstein? Ruth Rendell writes Inspector Wexford and Elizabeth George writes Inspector Lynley. Josephine Tey wrote wonderful male MCs. Heck, how about Harry Potter? And don’t forget all the romance novelists who write great men. There’s no reason at all why a woman can’t write a great male main character. It’s something I keep wanting to do myself.
[Reply]
Congratulations on the new book release.
For my question, which do you find more difficult to write and why? Mystery Plots, a fight scene or action in general, or a sex scene?
[Reply]
Hi Stacia!
Thanks for taking the time to answer questions. I haven’t read your books yet, but I’m definitely putting them on my TBR list.
I’d like to know what made you decide to write about demons, rather than for ex. vampires, shapeshifters, witches or something else? Thanks.
I RSVPed.
I already receive BBB’s newsletter.

Hi Stacia!
I always wonder about these questions…
Where do you like to write and do you need any special things to get you motivated?
How do you organize your writing? Do you use outlines or just freestyle? What about when you get other cool ideas for books? Do you have some place you store them?
Did you ever feel like “wow I have a perverted mind!” when writing erotica? I never read any of your erotica work, but i’ve always sort of wondered this about erotica writers so I hope you don’t mind me asking..=]
Take care, Nicole

Hi Stacia!

Hey, Zombie Joe! Actually, I find them all about the same. They all have different challenges, really. Action scenes are probably a little harder just because it’s difficult to keep the urgency up for an extended period of time, but yeah, they all have their difficulties.
Hi Vale! Thanks! When I started Personal Demons I’d just finished writing some erotic vampire romances and wanted to do something different, plus the “personal demon” tagline thing was really tempting to me.
The Downside books are about witches and ghosts, and I’ve written Fae as well. So it’s just looking for something different from the last thing, really.
Hi Nicole! Great questions! I write in my living room on the couch; I mean, I can write almost anywhere but that’s what I prefer. And I usually have a cigarette, then play online for ten minutes or so before opening the file and getting to work; I need a few minutes to get into the right headspace. I don’t outline, no. It makes me feel like the book is done before it actually starts and takes the fun out of it. I store my ideas in my head.
Sometimes I’ll make a note. I keep a special notebook for them, with nothing but story ideas or comments for later scenes or whatever.
And lol, of course I don’t mind you asking! Actually, it’s the UF that makes me think I have a pretty twisted mind. I mean, yeah, every once in a while with the erotica I’d write something that surprised me, but it’s nothing compared to ritual cannibalism or ghostly prostitutes who steal souls from customers.
[Reply]
Hi Stacia,….. How are you today? Nerves over? I missed going into the bookstores today but am going to call them tomorrow on my day off to ask if they are going to stock the book…. Go Downside Army!!! LOL
My question is what food or drink LOL gets you into the mood to write? Are you a sweets, sours, cheezy or choc kinda girl? I am going to have to look into those suckers. There is an import store near me and I will have to check and see if they carry them.
What if any rituals do you do on release days? Do you lurk on the ratings or wait it out to have the feedback come to you?
I love your humor and can’t wait for my copy of Demon Inside to get here…. I am already a FB and twitter friend. Stacia’s info is already on my blog site and I am a blooded member of the BBB and all its branches…. Thanks again for the stop by…. Thanks for posting over here, Stacia! Always nice to see you around the interwebz.

Hey there Shell! Downside Army rocks!
Can you believe, the book is in Wal-Mart? I’ve heard from three separate people today who bought copies there!
I do really miss my Drumsticks lollies. They lasted forever so I could just sort of have it while I worked. But I’m not much of an eater.
Anyway. Umm, really, the food or drink is usually beer.
Nope, don’t really have any release day rituals. I admit I’ve checked Amazon & B&N a couple of times today but I’ve been so busy and having so much fun here it’s kept my mind off it, which is nice.
Hey Lakota! Awesome to see you here, thanks!
Oh, Tom, Drumsticks lollies are delicious. DELICIOUS. Think of them as Starburst on a stick, but much, much chewier and longer-lasting. And ha, I love Tera. She is so much fun to write. Thanks!
Hi Sharon! (That’s my mom’s name! Awesome.) Yeah, I have, a couple of times, although usually if I throw them out I don’t start over. I hate that. It sucks when that happens. I have at least four or five files on my hard drive, sad little ghosts of unfinished books.
Hi Strogan/Gobby! I did actually always love it, yeah. I remember in third grade I got chosen by my teacher to do a day-long creative writing workshop, and it was so exciting. I was on my high school newspaper staff too. It’s just always been something I loved doing. Thanks!
Hi Sarai P! Oooh. I sometimes listen to music when I write, but the books always have a playlist I listen to in the car or whatever. Once I can afford it–I would have been able to but we moved into a new house instead, lol–I’m setting up a radio station on my website to play the stuff I listen to. Meanwhile, check out Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers (LAMF: The Lost ‘77 Mixes); anything by the Lazy Cowgirls; Radio Birdman; Operation Ivy; Screeching Weasel; Stiff Little Fingers; The Vibrators; the Stooges…any of those.
Oh, and no, never did NaNo and never will. I’m hard enough on myself.
Hi Arlene! Oooh, good question! Megan doesn’t think real therapy can take place on those shows, but she appreciates their usefulness for people who can’t afford therapy. I think she’d get a kick out of Frazier, but I haven’t seen the Dolly movie (although I always meant to, because I do love Dolly.)
As to how she’d feel about TV shows about those people, the fictional ones? Probably a combination of amused and chagrined.
Ha, Terri, it actually depends. Some days it actually is like that. Some days it’s a struggle. I prefer when it flows.
Hey, Alana, nice to see you too! Ha, I think that would be fun, but I doubt Jeri (although she’s one of the nicest people in the world) or Carrie (whom I’ve never met) would want to work with the likes of me.
I can tell you one thing, though; if Megan was going down to WVMP for the night, Greyson would insist on tagging along to make sure none of those hot vampires got anywhere.
Thanks!

I’ve been following your Blog for a while now, and have seen a little bit about Unholy Ghosts. I think I’m going to really like this one. What I haven’t seen yet, is if you’re planning a trilogy or more in this world?
Which is your favorite series so far, Unholy Ghost, Personal Demons, or possibly the new YA?

Thanks.

Hi Elie! Thanks! Yeah, I’m really excited about Radio Downside and really hoping I can get it all set up soon!
As to how? Ha, I stay up really late.
I’ve had to learn to work in little spurts, too; to keep what I’m doing in my head while I pour juice or hand out cookies, so I can get right back to it. But mostly I just lose sleep. And oh, geez, they’re going to have to be at least fifteen or sixteen, I think, before I let them read any of my stuff.
Thanks Donna! At the moment there are three books in the Demons series. Beyond that we’ll have to see; if Pocket wants more I’ll certainly be happy to talk about it! And oooh. I would love to have a dinner party with people from history. Eleanor of Aquitaine; Richard III; Caroline of Brunswick; Jennie Jerome Churchill; Edgar Allen Poe; Charles Dickens… I know there’s a few more big ones I can’t remember at the moment!
Thanks Heather!
Hi Candy! Yes, I am a filthy smoker.
I quit easily through both of my pregnancies but took it up again later, although I never smoke indoors or around my kids. So I don’t smoke much, lol, but I do smoke.
Hi Mardel! So far there are three Downside books, but I’m really hoping to do more beyond that. It’s really going to depend on how well they sell, so…
Ha, it’s really hard to pick a favorite! I like them for different reasons.
The YA is about a teenage witch on the outside of everything, and demon summoning, and her crazy mother. I’m really pleased with it so far.
Thanks!

Hi Stacie,

Hi Rebecca!
It depends, really. A typical working week is me up until 3 or 4 writing, and up by ten or eleven to hang out with my family, since it’s summer and I don’t have to get up early to get my daughters to school. I work whenever and wherever I can, pretty much.
Both the city Megan lives in and Triumph City in the Downside books are based on real cities, but I tend to make up names simply because it allows me more room to invent stuff. I give a big clue as to the city Triumph City is based on in the second Downside book UNHOLY MAGIC, but haven’t ever said what city Megan lives in. And I would have, except to get my parking garage scenes in the first one I had to change a detail.
As for settings, I make most of it up.

Hi Stacia!
I have a few questions. What made you start writing? How long did it take you to get published? Did you complete any books or even short stories that weren’t published before you got your big break?
Thanks so much for talking to us little people.
Oh, I RSVPed.
[Reply]
Hey Paula! Thanks so much for stopping by! I won’t comment on you thnking it’s great, lol, because you know I’m never satisfied.
Hi Lisa! Hmm. I’ve always written, well, off and on. I tried a few times to really focus on it but life always got in the way. But after my first daughter was born I was home with her and decided I was going to go for it. From that day to the day I got my first offer was about three years, during which I completed two mss; both medievals. The first was awful. The second, with extensive editing and rewriting, became December Quinn’s “Black Dragon” from Cerridwen Press. It was my attempt at an old-school style romance, and I still have a very soft spot for it; it actually garnered my best romance reviews ever.

So there was that first novel, yeah. There’s a short that never got published; it’s not terrible but I don’t think it’s great so only submitted it once. And of course I have tons of half-finished mss in my hard drive. Does that help?
Thank YOU, for coming to talk to me! It’s always so nerve-wracking to do these, even with the great people at Bitten by Books, because I’m always convinced nobody is ever going to show up. It’s why I’ve never done a signing.
