Release Party, Chat and Contest with Author Jeaniene Frost

Posted under Contests, Guest Bloggers, Videos by Site Hostess on Wednesday 22 July 2009 at 8:30 am
*****

Thanks so much to Bitten By Books for having me while I celebrate the release of Destined for an Early Grave, book four in the Night Huntress series. I hope everyone has a good time with the contest, but before we get to that, I’m going to give a little background on the novel.

Let me rewind you back to July 2007 at the Romance Writers of America convention. It was over three months before my first book came out and I was talking to another author about my series. At the time, I only had two books under contract, and the author asked me if that’s all I wanted to write in the Night Huntress series. I told her no, that I wanted to write at least six books, because I had an over-arcing plot idea where Cat and Bones go through *censored, censored, censored* and then *whoa-damn censored*  ;-).

Some of those “censored” ’s have already occurred in the first three books, and some will come later in books five, six, or seven, but a big one I’ve been planning since even before I sold my first novel finally comes to pass in Destined for an Early Grave. So this book is the culmination of a lot of hoping/dreaming/scheming from me as an author, lol. It’s really awesome that I’ve been given the chance to advance my plot, characters, and world this way. It’s what I dreamed of as an aspiring author, and what I dreamed later as a published author when I still had more series ideas than book contracts.

It’s also been hilarious to see the “OMG!” responses from readers who’ve gotten an early look at DESTINED. As an author, I still want to be able to surprise readers who’ve taken the ride with me and my characters thus far in the series. From the early reports I’ve gotten on DESTINED, it seems I’ve accomplished that :). It’s also so gratifying to see those readers say they loved the twists in this book. I might have thought of them long before I ever imagined even having readers, but being able to share my world and characters is something so cool, I don’t think I’ll ever get used to.

Speaking of sharing, let’s talk contest prizes! The prizes are in three parts. I’m giving away ten signed copies of Destined for an Early Grave to ten winners as part one of the prizes. Books will be shipped anywhere in the world the winners’ live. Part two of the prizes will be one $25.00 gift certificate from either Amazon or Barnes & Noble, whichever the winner’s preference. Part three is one gift certificate to Amazon or B&N, winner’s preference again, for $75.00. Free books and free money for more books. Those are some of my favorite things to receive, and I hope they’re some of yours, too.

Bitten By Books, as my gracious host, has listed the rules of the contest below. Thanks so much to them again for having me, and good luck everyone!

But before I go, here’s a question for readers of series books, either mine or another authors’ - do you like to be surprised by events in a series? Or do you like it when you can predict which direction the characters/plots are going?

    Hi Jeaniene,
I love the Night Huntress series! I’m looking forward to Destined for an Early Grave.
I would like to know who you would cast as Cat and Bones if the series was made into a mini series or movie.

Thank you for writing such a great series, it’s one of the best in Urban Fantasy.

    Hi Jeaniene,

I’ve read only your first book so far, but loved it! My question is this:

Is Bones based on anyone you know, or characteristics taken from a few different people you know?

  3. Comment by Toni Smathers — July 22, 2009 @ 8:39 am

And oh I like to be surprised by events in a series that I’m reading. Predictable books get boring fast!

    Hi Jeaniene,

I’m glad you’re writeing more books in the series. In answer to your question, I prefer books with twists. I don’t really enjoy reading a book and being able to tell what s going to happen halfway through.

Hi, I’m new to your books, as a matter of fact I haven’t had a chance to read them yet. But they are right on top of my list of what to read. Anyways I wanted to ask a couple of questions.

    1. What got you into vampires? I absolutely LOVE vampires, so I enjoy reading books about them.
    2. Where did you get your ideas for the Night Huntress series?
    3. Lastly, where did you get the idea for your main character, Cat? I love her and her personality.

Thank you so much for writing the books and taking the time to answer the questions of your fans.

Hi, Jeaniene! Love the first three night huntress books! Can’t wait for the fourth!

I was wondering… I know you are doing Spade’s book for the first night huntress world book, then Mencheres after that. Who are you planning on after that?

  15. Comment by Shell Bryce — July 22, 2009 @ 9:00 am

    Hi Jeaniene,
Ok my question is…. from a reader who has not read one of your books yet, except those in a couple of anthologies
…ok HONESTY there are a couple in the TBR pile.
What will I find different in your series that makes it different from all the rest in the genre? I know some of the reader comments but I am curious to hear your thoughts as to why I should move it higher in the pile…LOL
Ok HONESTY again…. they really aren’t that far down…

    Now for my other question:

What food gets your muse flowing to create.? Are you a sweets, sours, cheezy, chocolate??

I am a blood bonded BBB member, I will be adding you on twitter and have tweeted the contest.

    Thanks Shell the Hockeyvampiress

  16. Comment by MAZ — July 22, 2009 @ 9:00 am

First, let’s say your books didn’t exist. If you wanted to get someone who was a paranormal/fantasy virgin really sucked into the genre right away, which books/authors would you turn them on to first?

Second, I read a lot of blogs about books and it seems if there is prevailing thought that publishers aren’t interested in looking at new manuscripts from this genre… that there’s a glut. Is this really the case? Are they really off the paranormal bandwagon? In your opinion, what is the Next Big Thing? (I’d be sad if this were the case, because I truly love all the camp-were-witch stuff and I can’t get enough of ‘em).

  17. Comment by Aimee — July 22, 2009 @ 9:05 am

OH! And do you plan on doing a book about Tate? VERY interested in that one!

Thanks for stopping by today (the most honored one’s birthday). I am so glad that you decided to write about Bones and Cat. I love them. I like the fact that Cat doesn’t see herself as the strong person that others do. My question steams from that thought.

Will you ever write a book or a chapter from another perspective so that we can see how the ‘world’ sees Cat?

I will say after book 3 (which made me cry!) I am sitting on pins and needles for 4. (I am on vacation next week out of town and I already scoped out where I can buy it.)

Hi there, Jeaniene! I’m a huge fan and love the first three night huntress books! I read them all in a row and now can’t wait for the fourth! Cat and Bones are a great couple!

Similar to another question above - who are your favorite authors and do you have any other paranormal romance series that you enjoy and would recommend.

Also what does your timeline look like for future Night Huntress novels? I’ll need to update my list after the 28th!

    Hi, Jeaniene.

To answer your guestion - I do like surprises in a series, but it kind of depends on what kind of surprise it is - does my favorite character die? Not good! Or does s/he win a million bucks? - Not bad!

So, yeah - depends on surprise. :)

    Hello Jeaniene -

I’ve been a fan of your Cat and Bones books for quite a while now (well, since the first came out.)

I notice that you have a new series starting with a book called The First Drop of Crimson, yet I can’t find any info on it yet. Is it a YA or Adult book?

What will it be about? (the First Drop of Crimson)It says Night Huntress book one, which I thought was One Foot in the Grave. Is it new characters?

    Lisa R

Per your question “do you like to be surprised by events in a series? Or do you like it when you can predict which direction the characters/plots are going?”
I love a surprise or a twist. But it must not be too far out there. I like having an idea where the story is going and then being surprised. But I hate it being totally predictable or so unexpected that it is not believable. I especially hate the bad guy being an a**hole for 300 pages, showing no remorse at any time, and then on page 301 of 305 pages he explains that he was only pretending to be a bad guy to catch the really bad guy.

    I RSVPed.

Greetings Jeaniene! And Happy Super Birthday Rachel! Are we allowed to ask how old you are?

First off- Thank you for such a great series. I love paranormal and especially love a great series. Normally I won’t start a new series until there are at least three books out as I HATE waiting for that next book. However, yours are an exception. I was given “Halfway to the Grave” as a gift (my kids know to check my wishlist at Amazon on birthdays and at Xmas) and I fell in love with Cat and Bones in the first book and have reread each of the earlier books each time a new one is due out. Another exception as I don’t hold on to many of the books I read (if I did we would have no where to sit or sleep). Ah, but my question. I love the idea that so many exceptional paranormal writers are writing for the YA market. I had always felt this was an area that would help turn kids on to reading and not only benefit the writers now but also later as they made reading a part of their lifetime experience. Many authors have added a YA series to their writing, do you intend to do this and if so can you give us a brief look at what you are planning?
Also I saw that you have another new book due out in Feb 2010, “First Drop of Crimson”, is this a new series?

    Hi Jeaniene,

Love your books. I have all of them. I had the privliage of meeting you at New York Comic Con and enjoyed your panel very much. I have also put a link on my blog to your website. Once I have finished reading the latest book in Cat’s series I will be posting up a review on all 5 (counting Devil and Dukes anthology book in there). I can’t wait.

    Hey J~

This is Miki (from Vicki’s board). Just wanted to drop by and show some love! =) This is the best book yet with definite OMFG moments! And to answer your question, heck yeah, I want to be surprised when I’m reading a book. What’s the fun if you can already figure out what’s going to happen next?

*The only problem with being lucky to snag an ARC is that now I have to wait that much longer for the next one to come out. Sigh…

    Happy Writing~

Hi Jeaniene! (And Happy Birthday Rachel!) Thank you so much for answering our questions! Oh, and to answer your question, I LOVE it when I am surprised! I’ve always been one of those people that can figure out the plot really quickly, so when I am actually surprised I love it!
Ok, so my question is, how much do you actually believe in the paranormal existing in our world.
    Thanks!

Hello Jeaniene! Thanks for stopping by Bitten by Books! In answer to your question, I like to be surprised, but it has to be consistent with how the characters have behaved up until then. For instance, if the heroine is a by-the-books police officer in book 1, and she has joined a major crime syndicate by books 3, I’m going to need a good reason why. (That’s a purely hypothetical example, by the way).
Since this seems to be convention and conference season (RWA, ALA, San Diego Comic con, etc.) I wanted to ask you, Jeaniene, do you enjoy going to these things, and what’s your favorite part?

    Hi Jeaniene!
I met you at RT 2008 and picked up your books there but with my reviewing schedule, I must admit I have not gotten to read them yet. They are on my bookshelf though and I will get to them. You impressed and intrigued me enough that I bought them so I will read them! (Moving them to top of my TBR shelf now).

*Squee* Thank you so much for coming by Jeaniene! And happy birthday to the wonderful Rachel! As for questions… How did you ever pre-plot like you mentioned at RWA two years ago?! HTG hadn’t even been released and you knew what you wanted to have happen in a six-story arc?! *is jealous* Did it just come to you? Over how long of a period did you plot out such a detailed story arc? Or was it more just an “I know I want to have this, this, and this happen somehow by this book” thing?

As for your question to us… I like to be surprised by twists I didn’t see coming. If a twist comes and I didn’t see it coming I feel partially scandalized, yes, but mostly exhilarated. Can’t wait to see what happens next. If I can predict every little thing that’s going to happen, then it doesn’t matter how good the writing is, I may lose interest. I CAN’T wait for First Drop of Crimson! The teaser scene you put up a while back has had me excited for a long time!!!

    Secondly,
    Jeaniene,
Welcome! Love the series. Can’t wait for the new book. Okay. So, my first question to you is:
(You may have already answered this in the new book, and if so, regard it,) But, will Cat and Bones get the wedding that they want?

I’m also really excited for the “World of Night Huntress” books. How many of those do you foresee?

  48. Comment by Nancy Gilliland — July 22, 2009 @ 10:28 am

First off, I love Cat & Bones. And I absolutely hate predictable. Give me twists and surprises every time. My question-will we see spinoffs with characters from the series, or in the world, but not involving Cat & Bones per se?

    Hi Jeaniene!
Great event here. I have to say I love your books and can’t wait to read the next one. I have a question about First Drop of Crimson. I found this one on Goodreads and I wondered what it will be exactly. As I understand it will play in the same world as the Cat & Bones and I wanted to know if there will be characters we already know or if it will be something completely unrelated to this series.

As for your questions I like unexpected developments. I have to admit sometimes they aren’t what I wanted to happen but I like them nonetheless. Perfect example is Prey by Rachel Vincent. I didn’t like the development but I think it’s the best book I every read of her.

I RVSP’d. I follow you both on Twitter(@Susi_Sunshine) and tweeted about this event today(http://twitter.com/Susi_Sunshine/status/2781192607)

Hey Jeaniene! Well, as everyone has already said I LOVE the Night Huntress Series. Bones especially! When I first read Halfway to the Grave I was left in awe! It was fantastic! And you might have said this at some point or maybe not, but did you get your idea for Bones’ character based off of Spike from Buffy a little bit? Like when he had bleached blonde hair and his accent. I mean I know he isn’t totally Spike, but I was just wondering, that was the image that came to my mind when I read about his hair color. Loved it!

Plan to scour the stores this weekend to see if they might put DFAEG out early!! Dying to read it! Tried for an ARC and lost, so it’s been a long wait since that contest.

I know you’re starting a new series, which I can’t wait for. Already guessing who I think the mystery heroine is! But I was wondering, because I may have forgotten if you already mentioned it, how many more Night Huntress books with Cat and Bones will there be?

Happy Birthday today O Favored One Rachel, many many returns and best wishes for your day….

First off this post is to thank someone who has quickly become one of my favorite writers out today to read, Thank You Jeaniene for coming to answer questions and give away swag to us who are enrolled in the BBB group.. We all appreciate your efforts and time you spend doing this and are glad to get to spend time with you online ……
I am so glad to see the series is going to continue in the above statement looks like up to maybe 7 books. I am one of those people who think of a good book as a long term friend and all the ones read in the “Huntress” series so far qualify for me and looks like next book is even going to be better…..
To answer your question Ms. Frost, I love surprises and twists and turns in my reading material and at the same time if I can figure out the plot line on my own ahead of time that is okay too…

My question is going to be a silly one for you as compared to some of the rest that may be asked… I would like to know about the video made for “Destined For An Early Grave” posted on your web site…
Am I the only person who is confused about whom the actor Paul Walker is portraying in the video, is he supposed to be Bones character or just a random blonde man with a sword in the videao? The reason I ask is because there are several different places where a blonde bloke shows up and not sure why they are not the same man who apparently is intended to be Bones character as shown when he is cuddling up to Cat….

  53. Comment by Raonaid Luckwell — July 22, 2009 @ 10:47 am

First things first “Happy Birthday” to Rachel * Starts singing the birthday song even though her voice stinks* Maybe we can ask Bones to strip for you…

As for Jeaniene’s question… Myself, I rather be surprised by events in series than having it be predictable. When it’s predictable, it tends to lose my interest and bores me. Minor predictable is alright but it in a big sense is not. (hope that made sense)

My question for her would be: “What song would you consider Cat’s and Bone’s theme song.” Could be separate songs for each character. And if you could collaborate on a writing project with any author, alive or dead, who would it be (and if this person or persons is your writing idols)

Hello, Mrs. Frost and Happy Birthday, Rachel. (Your poem’s at the required spot. I hope you’ll like it.)

I’m friends with the Books, subscribed to the Newsletter, sent out the request to Mrs. Frost’s profile, etc., etc. I’m just going to play this by ear since I doubt I’ll win anything. (Besides, I think I’m violating one of the rules.)

Answering your question, Mrs. Frost…yes, I do like to be surprised. To this day, I’m still in shock over the death of a key character in one of my favorite series novels from Harry Turtledove. A nice little ten book saga involving an alternate history with the United States and the Confederacy fighting WWI and WWII and the battles inbetween. Always thought the man would survive long enough to tell his sad story and that of his race to someone at the end, but…well, you guys will have to read the books to find out. It’s a long read, but well worth it.

Now for my question…have you considered doing a straight romance novel involving ghosts with a twist? As in, the ghost helps the main character with her love life and she helps him with his love after life. (I know. Not very original. Sorry.)

Thanks for answering and hope things are going well with you, ma’am.

Hi Jeaniene! I am so psyched for the release of Destined for an Early Grave. I can’t believe it’s only a week away! I already have my copy reserved at Barnes and Noble, waiting for next Tuesday. In answer to your question, I like to be surprised. Although authors and TV shows don’t have to work very hard for it with me. Unless there are fairly blatant clues, I’m not going to know the surprise until it happens. If you’ve read Charlaine Harris’s Sookie Stackhouse series, it took me to almost the end of book three to realize who Bubba was. But I think it’s more fun when the characters surprise you (but not in a bad way, like a certain event in At Grave’s End I could mention)
I love this series and Bones is amazing. I love that he makes Cat see herself for who she really is. I wanted to ask, what is your favorite part about Bones and Cat’s relationship?

Okay, enough gushing - as for your question - I do like surprises for the most part, if a book is too predictable it just doesn’t grab you. What I don’t like is when something is done to a well-liked character for no good reason (i.e. just for the sake of it).

    Great post!

    Hi Jeaniene,
I like to be surprised especially as I rarely am. Surprises that come out of nowhere, don’t make sense & that aren’t explained aren’t necessarily all that great though.

How many hours a day do you spend writing? On average how long does it take you to write a book?

Happy Birthday Rachel! Hope you are having a great day.

    Hello, Jeaniene!
Always nice to see you out and about on the web (as well as in person). You know how much I love the plot twists and yes you are very good with them…as I was reading the ARC of DFAEG at RT, I kept making startled noises and jumps because of them…I think I woke Becci up a few times, but I had to finish that book before I could sleep!

My question is….since you are doing books about Spade and Mencheres….do ya think we could get my main man Vlad’s story, too? I only ask for altruistic reasons…not just becuz’ I find him utterly lick-able.

I thank Vicki Pettersson every time I read one of your books because she is the one who told me about you before HTTG was published. I still cherish the HTTG signed cover flat that you sent me.

P.S. Your new key chain will be out in the mail as soon I can find my padded envelopes (moved into my new office and stuff is EVERYWHERE!)

    Hi Jeaniene,
The Nighthuntress books are definitely one of my top 3 favorite series of all time and I’ve been waiting so anxiously for the 4th book to come out! Although from past experience, I’m going to try (even though I don’t think I’ll succeed) to read this book slowly. I devoured the first 3 books in 2 days and have been waiting for months now for the 4th book. Yeah, I know, my life is so difficult.

I love it that you have an over-arching plot already planned out and that you’ve planned out a specific number of books for this series. Much as I love having my favorite series continue indefinitely, I actually prefer knowing that the author already have things planned out and that there’s a definite end. I hate it when good series develop the “since the series has no end and I’ve run out of ideas so I’m going to write a plot gets more and more ridiculous” syndrome.

Finally, to answer your question, I love to have a series shock me so much that I fall out of my chair. Falling out of chairs is so much more fun than feeling smug because you figured out what’s going to happen next.

July 28 is marked on my calendar. I can’t wait!

Welcome to BBB, Jeaniene, I just luv your books, they are still on my keeper shelf. Can’t wait to read Destined for an Early Grave. Its wonderful that there may be more in the Night Huntress series. Keep em coming please !!!!!

  96. Comment by Phyllis — July 22, 2009 @ 12:57 pm

Hi Jeaniene. Wanted to take a quick minute to pop in and say that I thoroughly enjoy your writting style and the fresh ideas of plot evolvement in your Night Huntress series. The heroine, Cat, is a nice blend of major kick butt action with emotional vulnerability.

That said… the depth and psychology behind all of the characters within the Night Huntress series leaves me wanting more and to find out what will happen next. You are in my top authors list and I look forward to also reading your next book, “First Drop of Crimson”, in your new book series.

With the originality of your story’s plot development, it makes me wonder how your ideas come to you. Have you always been an outright imaginative person, draw from life experiences, or do you wake from dreams scrambling to get it on paper?

Jeaniene I love your books i cant wait till the 28th oh yeah! My sister in law is reading the books rite now. she keep hearing me talk about the series so she went out n bought them.

1st question: how do you come up with such interesting characters?

2nd question: does cat and yourself have any similiarities? are both of you not afraid of anything? :)

And for your question, it depends on the series. Most series, i like to know whats going on. My bff gets mad at me all the time because (i no its really bad to do this, just as its bad to dog ear pages) i read the last chapter first. I like to know whats in store and for some reason i feel soo good when i connect the dots, like oh!! thats why the last page said that. Lately, since i have a kindle dx i don’t skip to the last page, so im getting better. But in general, yes, for yours and most of the other books i like knowing whats in store, mostly more in the romance department than the action part. Lol. And my kindle already has the book saved for later!

    Hey Jeaniene,

I like both (in response to your question). Plot twists and surprises are great and keep me on my toes, but sometimes it can ruin a story if the plot is too far from what is expected. Say, for instance, if one of the main characters dies and is dead for good!

My question for you is: Will we get more on Vlad in the books to come?

    Hi Jeaniene!

I want to tell you that your series was my push towards reading paranormal romances, and I haven’t stopped since that first book (I now have tons and tons of them lying around).

I’d like to know if plan on writing anything other than paranormal fiction?

And, are we going to see more of Randy and Mom together? - because that would be great!

    Thank you for answering!

    I RSVPed to be here.

“here’s a question for readers of series books, either mine or another authors’ - do you like to be surprised by events in a series? Or do you like it when you can predict which direction the characters/plots are going?”
My answwer is a bit of both. I like to see where the general premise is going but I always love to see the “WHOA’s”. I like to guess at what will happen but rarely (unless I give up and read the ending first.. yeah, I admit it I am too impatient for my own good) guess the biggies..

I will post again with all my entry links etc but here is my question..
Jeanine, When you created Bones did you intend for him to look like Spike?
I know I am not the only one who thought of him as looking like James Marsters. I had that image in my head through the first book then when we actually goot a good peek at him from the cover it was cemented in my brain.. Was that intentional? (either way good choice!!)

Wow, lots of comments already, lol! I have your whole series so far, love it.

Question (hope it wasn’t asked already, don’t have time to read all above comments): what things *must* you have when you are writing? (Say, chocolate, certain music, at home, in a cafe, etc. etc. etc.)

Very much anticipating the next Cat & Bones installment, thanks! Oh, and I do like unexpected twists in books, as long as they are natural to the story arc and not thrown in as a desperation move when the author feels stuck.

    Hi Jeaniene,
The answer to your question is I love to be surprised. I will admit this year has been a little rough with the surprises. I have shed a tear or two due to the fact that many of my favorite characters have been killed. Of course in some of the books you never know…..they might come back, one way or another.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY RACHEL!!!!

    ok now my questions….

Due to his past Bones has a bit more liberal outlook on many things in life (except when it comes to Cat), is this him, you or what the readers/publishers want?

What do you do to celebrate your wonderful books? Do you set goals and treat yourelf when reach each one? or do you wait until a book is complete and then celebrate it all? or do nothing? or something completely different?

I am so glad you are here and can’t wait to see your answers to everyones questions #1 especially. I love your books and can’t wait until the 28th.

be back later to do more contest stuff and ask more questions…..

Hello! I love twists in a book as long as the twist doesn’t go against either the characterization that the author has already built up over the series or violates the rules of the world that the author has already presented to us. That makes me grumpy. LOL My favorite scene of all your books is when Cat and Bones catch Cat’s Mom banging Randy. Will those two be featured in the next book? I am really hoping that their
relationship will move forward and we can enjoy more of them together!

  123. Comment by Adriana Barrantes — July 22, 2009 @ 2:54 pm

I also have a couple questions I have always wanted to ask:

Usually when someone writes you use a “base” for your characters, I mean, it is easier to relate to how someone would react at the beginning if you use someone as a base and as time passes the characters develop their own. Did you use someone as “base” for Cat? Does she behave or behaved at the beginning like someone you know?

Also, about writing: how do you write? Do you have a complete definition of the book before you start (like a diagram of what you want to happen) or do you have only an idea of what you want and let it go for the ride?

I really want to know the answers!! :D

  125. Comment by Jeaniene Frost — July 22, 2009 @ 3:04 pm

Hi! Happy birthday to Rachel, and thanks so much to everyone for coming out to participate in the contest. I copied or paraphrased the questions, so hopefully I covered everything that’s been asked so far. If I missed someone’s question, sorry and give me a poke to answer it :).

Q: Is Bones based on anyone you know, or characteristics taken from a few different people you know?

Bones comes from a mish-mash of my imagination combined with visuals of a few actors that I found really hot. Appearance-wise, Bones is a blend of (young versions of) Viggo Mortensen, Billy Idol, and Bruce Campbell. Personality-wise, Bones has attitude, but it’s balanced with humor, loyalty, and a strict sense of right and wrong. Now, Bones’s sense of right and wrong is very different than mine – and, um, the police’s - but it’s a moral code Bones rarely deviates from, even though he’s a bounty hunter.

Q: What is the one question you wished fans asked but haven’t yet?

I’ve been asked so many questions by readers, they’ve covered everything I could think of.

Q: Do you have any other ideas you are mulling?

I have far more ideas than I’ll ever have time to write, and many of them don’t involve vampires. All of them have a paranormal creature, subculture, or element, though. Seems I can’t think up a storyline without something paranormal in it!

Q: I have a question regarding short stories vs. novels … Do you prefer one over the other and why?

I prefer to write novels over short stories. I like short stories, but when I write them, I usually come up with subplots, other characters, and events that make me wish I could turn them into novels. What can I say – it’s hard for me to be succinct.

Q: What got you into vampires?

I’ve loved vampires since I was a child. Kept rooting for Dracula to win over VanHelsing, much to my parent’s dismay. I couldn’t name one thing that was an “aha!” moment for me regarding vampires. I’ve just always loved stories and movies about them, whether vamps are the heroes, or the villains.

Q: What is FIRST DROP OF CRIMSON? How does it fit into the Night Huntress series?

FIRST DROP OF CRIMSON is the first “spin off” novel in the Night Huntress world. It features Spade as the hero, and a as-yet unnamed heroine (readers will know who she is once DESTINED FOR AN EARLY GRAVE comes out, because there’s an except of FDOC at the end of it). There will be at least one more “spin off” novel featuring a side character as a main character from the series. Mencheres has the next book, which is still untitled.

Q: What will I find different in your series that makes it different from all the rest in the genre?

This is a hard question for me to answer, because I’m the author, so talk about biased, lol. Some readers have told me that my take on vampires was unusual (my vampires can go out in sunlight, have no aversion to wood or crosses, and don’t need to kill to feed). Some readers mentioned that they enjoy how Cat, my heroine who is a half-breed, doesn’t really fit into either world (human or vampire). Bones, my hero, gets a LOT of fan mail. People seem to enjoy him because he’s not as angst-filled as heroes from some other novels. I didn’t set out to write a novel that was “different” – I wrote just the story that wouldn’t leave me alone, so I might not be the best person to point out the difference between my books and others in the genre.

Q: Let’s say your books didn’t exist. If you wanted to get someone who was a paranormal/fantasy virgin really sucked into the genre right away, which books/authors would you turn them on to first?

I’m a fan of a lot of authors (to see a complete list, go here: http://www.jeanienefrost.com/links-of-interest.html). Here’s a few of them - Charlaine Harris, Kelley Armstrong, Mary Janice Davidson, Diana Gabaldon, Melissa Marr, Ilona Andrews, Rachel Vincent, Vicki Pettersson, and Yasmine Galenorn.

Q: I read a lot of blogs about books and it seems if there is prevailing thought that publishers aren’t interested in looking at new manuscripts from this genre… that there’s a glut. Is this really the case? Are they really off the paranormal bandwagon?

My editor was asked this question on a panel at RWA last week, and I’ll summarize her response: No, paranormals are NOT off the bandwagon. On the flip side, though, she cautioned against writing just to try and catch a trend, citing the example that if an author’s strong suit is historicals, a paranormal might not best showcase that author’s talents. The moral of this? Write what you love, because trends will ebb and flow continually.

Q: Will you ever write a book or a chapter from another perspective so that we can see how the ‘world’ sees Cat?

So far, the only time Cat is seen through another perspective is in FIRST DROP OF CRIMSON, where Cat has a role as a supporting character, so she’s seen through Spade and the heroine’s perspective. I’d like to do a book (or part of a book) showing Cat seen through Bones’s eyes, though. I think it would surprise some people.

Q: What does your timeline look like for future Night Huntress novels?

DESTINED FOR AN EARLY GRAVE, Night Huntress series book #4, July 28th, 2009.
UNBOUND: dark fantasy anthology with Kim Harrison, Melissa Marr, Vicki Pettersson, Jocelynn Drake, and me, August 25th, 2009 (Short story is “Reckoning”, a prequel in Bones’s point of view).
FIRST DROP OF CRIMSON, Night Huntress WORLD book 1, January 26th, 2010. Features Spade as the main character, as well as heroine-to-be-named.
DEATH’S EXCELLENT VACATION, fantasy anthology edited by Charlaine Harris and Toni L.P. Kelner, August 2010. Short story “One for the Money”, a Cat and Bones story.
Night Huntress WORLD book #2, untitled, September 2010. Mencheres’s book.
Night Huntress series book #5, untitled, release date spring 2011. Cat and Bones book.

Q: What inspires them to write and come up with new plots and dialogue?

I get inspiration from a lot of sources: music, sightseeing, places, people, dreams…the list is endless. Many times, it also comes from pondering, “what if?” Each character helps shape the tone and dialog of a book, too. I might have an idea for a plot that my characters just won’t cooperate with, and then hello – rewrites!

Q: Will we find out more deep dark secrets about Bones’ past in DfaEG?

More of Bones is revealed in DFAEG, but it’s different sides to his character, not necessarily his past. Glimpses of his past are there, yes, but subtle ones. More of Bones’s past will come up in UNBOUND, the anthology that features a short story in Bones’s point of view.

Q: How did you come up with the idea to name one of Cat’s colleagues, Juan?

Heh. I thought up the most additive person in the world – Juan Valdez ;-). That man has strung me along with his sweet caffeinated siren song since I was twelve. The name Juan in my books was an homage to my addition to coffee. Hey, coffee’s irresistible to me, and Juan is irresistible to many women in my books. It fit.

Q: How much do you actually believe in the paranormal existing in our world?

Albert Einstein sums up best what I believe: “We don’t know one tenth of one percent about anything.” So I believe in the possibility of the paranormal, because to dismiss it entirely smacks of arrogance on our part. However, to get me to believe in something specific, like vampires or werewolves, I’d have to quote someone named Thomas: “Unless I see…I won’t believe.”

Q: Since this seems to be convention and conference season (RWA, ALA, San Diego Comic con, etc.) I wanted to ask you, Jeaniene, do you enjoy going to these things, and what’s your favorite part?

My favorite part of going to conventions is seeing friends in person, meeting people I normally only get to chat with online, and meeting readers. If I couldn’t do all of those things at conventions, I wouldn’t go.

Q: How did you ever pre-plot like you mentioned at RWA two years ago?! Did it just come to you? Over how long of a period did you plot out such a detailed story arc? Or was it more just an “I know I want to have this, this, and this happen somehow by this book” thing?

It was more a “I know I want to have this, this, and this happen.” I don’t plot things out very heavily in writing – I churn ideas around in my head over and over in what some might call an obsessive way :). Only when it comes time to write that particular book do I outline.

Q: Will Cat and Bones get the wedding that they want?

I hope so! I’m planning on it, but you know, sometimes things happen that I don’t expect (what, you thought just because I’m the author, I’m in charge of anything…? ;).

Q: I would like to know about the video made for “Destined For An Early Grave” posted on your web site. Am I the only person who is confused about whom the actor Paul Walker is portraying in the video, is he supposed to be Bones character or just a random blonde man with a sword in the video? There are several different places where a blonde bloke shows up and not sure why they are not the same man who apparently is intended to be Bones character as shown when he is cuddling up to Cat….

I don’t know the name of the blond model in the video. I don’t think it’s an actor, because all those pictures are model-released, royalty-free (or it would be copyright violation for me to use them). The blond man in the video represents Gregor. The brunette man in the video represents Bones, since Bones’s hair has been dark since the second book in the series. The redheaded woman is Cat, of course.

Q: What song would you consider Cat’s and Bone’s theme song?

I don’t have an overall theme song for Bones and Cat. I have songs that remind me of them (HERO OF THE DAY by Metallica, STAND INSIDE YOU LOVE, by Smashing Pumpkins, FIX YOU, by Coldplay, and more), but no one song in particular weighs more than the other when it comes to that.

Q: Have you considered doing a straight romance novel involving ghosts with a twist?

I do have a plot idea for ghost romance novel with a twist, in fact. Told you I had more ideas than time to write books.

Q: I was just wondering when we will get to see the FDOC cover, cause after reading your blog I’m really dying to see it.

I’m dying to show it! I have to wait until I get permission from my publisher. Probably not for another two months. They showed me a very preliminary image, but stuff still has to be added/arranged.

Q: Whatever happened to Crawfield cherry orchard with the turn of events for cat, her mother and her grandparents?

This comes up in my short story, One For the Money, but I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say that Cat bought her grandparents house/orchard after the events of One Foot in the Grave. She didn’t want anyone living there who might be killed in that house to draw her out again.

Q: My question for you is what type of setting do you like when you are writing?

Setting for the novel? It varies. In DFAEG, Cat and Bones go from Paris to London to New Orleans to Bavaria to Bucharest, for example. Whatever’s right for the story. Setting for me is my desk downstairs that has no internet access, lol. Internet is detrimental to my writing productivity.

Q: What got me into your reading was your short story “The Pack”. Are you ever going to go in that direction again?

I’d love to do more stories on werewolves. Pack was my change to play a little in the “furry” realm, and I’ve love to return to that later.

Q: So, what does your workspace look like? Clean, messy? Pictures no pictures?

Messy! I have pictures, yes, and also some odd little things, like a standing dagger, a skull paperweight, and leather cat-o-nine tails that a friend got me as a joke. Also, I have some stuffed animals. Yes, I know – an unusual mix of items.

Q: A simple question here - What kind of dog is Gypsy?

Gypsy is a Shiba Inu. She looks like a mini Akita with her curly tail and her coat. I have no bias when I say she’s absolutely beautiful.

Q: How do you keep track of your world building?

I do have several pages written down detailing specifics of my worldbuilding, but sometimes, I still have to go back and reread.

Q: Since you are doing books about Spade and Mencheres….do ya think we could get my main man Vlad’s story, too?

I’d love to do more “spin-off” stories, and yes, Vlad is one of the characters I’d like to do a full book on.

Q: Do Cat and you have any similarities?

Cat and I both have a dark sense of humor, plus bad language, but the similarities pretty much end there. She spends a lot of her time kicking ass. I spend a lot of my time writing. See the difference? :).

Q: What is your favorite thing about being an author?

Sharing my stories and character with other people. It’s so cool to have the figments of my imagination turn up on a page where readers can enjoy them, too.

First things first….A Big Happy Birthday to Rachel!!!!! Hope your having a great birthday!

    Ms. Frost,
I can’t wait for the next book! I’ve read the series and can’t get enough of Cat and Bones!

I truly hope you will write the ghost story! I’m sure, with your imagination, it’ll be smokin hot too!!!

My one question…. Do you plan on continuing the Cat and Bones stories???

    Thank you.

I love to be surprised by a series, however, I am a sucker for the happily ever after. I know, I know, people grow apart or life takes them in different directions… blah blah blah. LOL I still want to read the HEA for a couple that I invested time and emotions into. By all means, surprise me, but make everyone happy too.

    Hi Jeaniene,
you asked us ,’do you like to be surprised by events in a series? Or do you like it when you can predict which direction the characters/plots are going?’
I like the surprise, if it was predictable, what would be the fun in reading it?
Now my question for you, in how many of Cat’s lives has Cat & Gregor’s paths merged?
    Sharon K.

    Hello, Mrs. Frost

I really love this series and can’t wait until next Tuesday when Destined comes out. I picked them all up when At Grave’s End came out and my Barnes and Noble had them on an end cap.

My question is I’ve noticed that Catherine’s team seems to be getting dead/undead, will this trend proceed in the fourth book?

I’ve got bloodbank, twitter, both group and other on facebook, and myspace. Friends with Mrs. Frost on Myspace and follow on twitter. I forgot to RSVP like usual though.

  132. Comment by Vale — July 22, 2009 @ 3:59 pm

    Hi Ms. Frost!!
Thanks for taking the time to come here and chat, I love your series!
To answer your question: I think a book without turns and surprises would be too prdictable and therefore boring. But - since I’m a hopelessly romantic - I also don’t like it when the turn in the series permanently spoils and changes the situation just when it was set “on the good way to happy ending”, just for the sake of adding one more twist to the series.
My questions are: 1) when are we finally going to witness Cat and Bones’s wedding? 2) when is the fifth book going to come out? 3) how many books are there going to be for the Night Huntress World series?
    Thanks!

    I RSVPed.
    I already receive BBB’s newsletter. (nemesis18)

DId you have a mentor throughout the process for your first published novel? If so, how did you find him/her?

It seems soooo hard to “make it” out there. Dare I say it, but writing almost seems like the easy part. But then there’s finding someone to critique the work (and stopping at the grocery store on the way home), getting a good editor (while finishing Project A for work in time, which is next to impossible given that colleague B is on facebook all the time instead of doing his work), finding the right agent (Johnny! Stop jumping from the top bunk, you’re gonna break your neck!; Sally, how many times have I told you to practice your *()#$* flute?), having your query accepted (Sure, honey, I’m glad to call your mother for you and talk for an hour ‘cuz you don’t wanna do it), finding a publisher (Johnny! What did I just say?!?), blah… blah… blah….wahhhhhh!

My question is: How do you come up with names for your characters? Is it hard or easy for you to name characters?
I love surprises - and kudos to the author who can pull a real plot twist that I don’t see coming BUT makes perfect sense in retrospect. But I do find the occasional HEA book relaxing as well.
Much success and joy to you!! xoxo

    Hi Jeanine,

AGE made me cry like a baby. I was going through an emotional turmoil and I don’t believe I went through such emotions and feelings ever in my life. I had to literally force myself to stop crying near the end to continue reading or I wouldn’t have been able to figure what happened eventually. God… I’vent been heartbroken to that point even.

My question is what kind of emotions and feelings were you going through while writing AGE?

Congratulations on the book release! I can’t tell you how excited I am about Destined for an Early Grave, each of your books seems even better then the last and I’m sure it will be no exception :D

Hello Jeanine, thanks for visiting us at BBB and offering some great prizes! Please help me sing HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our fearless leader Rachel!

I am late, so most of my questions for you have been addressed. I often get to chat with you on another author’s site and I’ve come to discover that your are a very approachable author who takes the time to chat with your fans. That alone makes me want to read your books.

I haven’t read you yet, but you are on my short list. I have heard much about your main characters and I can’t wait to dive into your world.

I was wondering how you deal with negative feedback (if you get any) or fans that become upset with the decisions you have made in your writing?

Thanks for being at BBB, Jeaniene! Loved Halfway to the Grave but have to delve into my TBR pile and read the rest soon.

Happy Birthday, Rachel! Wish you many, many more.

Answering the question: Don’t want predictable so gimme some twists in a story. But they still have to “fit” and not be so far out they’re not believable.

    Questions 4U:
How is writing an anthology with other authors different from writing your series? Or is there no difference?

What’s on the top of your TBR pile?

    Thanks for stopping by BBB.

My question to you is what do you do when you’re stuck with a plot point?

    I RSVPed.

  160. Comment by Laina Christy — July 22, 2009 @ 7:38 pm

I first came across Halfway to the Grave about two years ago thanks to a bookseller at my favorite bookstore. I have never regreted that my enjoyment of these books borderlines on obsession. I prefer to be surprised in a book for the most part but sometimes its fun to anticipate whats going to happen in the story.

My question is where did you get the initial inspiration for this series?

I added BBB to my myspace and my facebook pages, joined BBB newsletter, and joined BBB group on facebook. As well as posted a blog on my myspace page: http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.ListAll&bID=501704435

Oh, forgot to add that I love to be surprised in a book, provided that the plot point is properly foreshadowed and is consistent with the characters.

  162. Comment by Donna S — July 22, 2009 @ 8:20 pm

I kind of like both. I like to be surprised but I like to be able to guess where it might go at least with the relationships. And if I am surprised I like to be happy about what happens.

Thanks for posting. I love this series and cant wait to read the new one and see what happens next.

Happy Birthday Rachel! And thanks so much for posting today Jeaniene. I love this series and cant wait to read the new book.

Hi Jeaniene, Thanks for coming and sharing with us ….
Happy Bithday Racheal , Hope it’s been a great one.

I’m one of the ones that hasn’t read any of the books yet, but they are on my wishlist at Amazon. I actually prefer to wait until there are a couple of the series out at least because I hate waiting for the next book.. It’s so nice when you can read one right after another. Yeah I’m greedy that way.. :)
As for your question.. I can usually pick up the direction pretty fast, and it takes away somewhat from the story; so yeah I much prefer surprises & twists. I might grumble when that surprise is one of my favorite characters being killed off.. but that’s how it goes.

So along those lines. My ?.. Is there a favorite character of yours from a series.. any media.. that you really thought it was a mistake to kill off?
Thank you for spending your time with us, and for the contest… fingers crossed.

I love your books! Cat and Bones totally rock! The covers are awesomeness and I am so glad they have all been similar. I really like that and as to your question, I like surprises just not at the end of the book. You know like where you are left going what the ****?
    Loved the interview. :)
I don’t know if this will count for the contest, but here goes…When are you doing a signing in Texas? Because we would love to have ya!

I can’t be bothered to add all the stuff for the contest but here’s my answer

I don’t like being surprised when a character wimps out of something I’ve been expecting for several books, like, will Murphy and Harry Dresden ever hook up in Dresden Files? The surprise was that Harry started dating Anastasia Lucio, but it turns out that she…, well I don’t wanna spoil it for anyone.

But I love it when characters do something unexpected like Georgina Kincaid having to make out with Tawny on umm, Succubus On Top?

And now, back to watching Night Watch :)

    Hi Jeaniene,

I LOVE being surprised by a book. It gets boring when you can see what’s coming. When something unexpected or shocking occurs, it always makes the reading experience better for me. Knowing that anything can happen is what keeps me coming back.

Question: Are there any characters for the books that you originally made up and loved, but they couldn’t fit into your stories? Are there characters you have sitting on the back burner waiting for their chance to break free?

AHH, BUT MY QUESTION!

Hi Jeaniene! I just finished reading your first three books in the series and I must say I was so hooked I had to go and track down your other anthologies to help deal with my withdrawal of Cat and Bones. I cannot wait to read the fourth book! I have it pre-ordered. ^^ I absolutely adore your characters, and I am ecstatic that you will be doing more stories outside of just the two main characters. Of course I am completely stoked for the continuing of the Bones and Cat storyline as well. That is just a given. ;)

My question is whether or not it was an intentional witticism to include a Black Volvo as a part of your story.

Thanks for being such an awesome person and author~!

    I RSVPed.
I love to find an author that writes a paranormal romance that is in a series. I frequently get books from a swap sites as this is often the only way to get a copy of a book that were published early in the series. I realize that you only see royalties from the original purchase but don’t you think that this in turn steers readers to purchase newer books written by you? What are your feelings about book swapping sites?

  192. Comment by Debbie P — July 23, 2009 @ 7:32 am

    I am hooked , Thank You !
Did you model Bones and Cat after anyone “real”?
Somebody in my reading group said that Bones reminds them of Spike from the Buffy series. Now that is how I see him.

Just wanted to let you know that I found your first book last year at my local library. Although I LOVE vampires, I was getting pretty sick of them by that time. But Halfway to the Grave was the best book I’d read all year. I immediately logged onto Amazon to see if you had written anything else. (And to buy my own copy!) I also gifted the first two books to four of my girlfriends for Christmas. Even my husband, who swears that he does not read romance books, is hooked! Keep up the good work. BTW: Consider spinning off some of your other characters (Spade & Tate in particular).

  198. Comment by Brandy A — July 23, 2009 @ 11:26 am

Hi Jeaniene! I’m a new reader of your Night Huntress series. I actually just got my hands on One Foot In The Grave and I’m really looking forward to reading the famous Chapter 32. Here are my questions:

    1. Did you know that Chapter 32 from One Foot in the Grave is famous? That’s all readers chat about on shelfari.

    2. Stephenie Meyer likes to post playlists for her fans of songs that inspired her while writing her books. I’ve recently seen another author do this. What kind of music inspires you when writing about Cat?

  199. Comment by Ashley Madden — July 23, 2009 @ 11:27 am

    I love your books Jeaniene!!!

To answer your question, I like to be surprised when reading book series, because if you know everything about where a character is going, it makes me lose interest in the book(s).

My question for you is, what’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done? :D

I am *SO* excited to read Book 4. This series is in my Top 3 favorites with the Southern Vampires and Mercy Thompson. I loved the evolution Cat made from Book 1 (amateur vampire hunter) to Book 2 (leader of her own elite group of hunters) and I simply cannot get enough of Bones. You could write an entire book about Bones doing the dishes and picking his nose and I would be rapt. I’m curious, as a writer, did you consciously give him certain traits that would make him an attractive character to your readers? Did the character just develop, in all his hotness, on his own? Thanks for writing such a great set of characters! I can’t wait to see what they do next.

Jeaniene said “Q: Is Bones based on anyone you know, or characteristics taken from a few different people you know?

Bones comes from a mish-mash of my imagination combined with visuals of a few actors that I found really hot. Appearance-wise, Bones is a blend of (young versions of) Viggo Mortensen, Billy Idol, and Bruce Campbell.”

Me: …sigh…..Bones is perfection to look at then…..

Okay, I’m back! I’ve copied questions with my answers below. If someone’s question was in my previous batch, I didn’t include it, so just scroll up for your answer there :).

Q: In how many of Cat’s lives has Cat & Gregor’s paths merged?

None. The first 20% of the book is available online (see the link in the contest announcement) and in that 20%, it explains how Gregor was in Cat’s life, yet she wasn’t aware of it until now.

Q: I’ve noticed that Catherine’s team seems to be getting dead/undead, will this trend proceed in the fourth book?

Members of Cat’s team does show up in book four, but they’re not as prevalent as they were in books two and three. Will more of them become undead? Probably, but I can’t say who or when yet.

Q: Did you have a mentor throughout the process for your first published novel? If so, how did you find him/her?

I didn’t know anyone in publishing prior to selling my first book, except for the agent who signed me. A couple months after I sold, I met Melissa, another author who would later become my friend and critique partner. We shared the same agent at the time, and I met her online when I stopped by her blog to say hello.

Q: How many books do you have planned for the series?

Right now there are seven Cat and Bones books under contract. At this time, I’m planning to end their story at seven (unless Cat & Bones need another book to wrap things up). There are also two “Night Huntress World” books coming out next year, which are spin-off of the series. FIRST DROP OF CRIMSON comes out January 26th, 2010 and will feature Spade as the hero. The second book, untitled as of now, features Mencheres as the hero and will release late 2010. I’d like to expand the Night Huntress world with more “spin off” books featuring side character as main characters. Cross your fingers for me!

Q: What book do you wish you could re-read for the first time?

Really hard question. Probably THE FAR PAVILLIONS, by MM Kaye.

Q: How do you come up with names for your characters? Is it hard or easy for you to name characters?

Some character names are easy, because they just come to me. Cat was always Cat, Bones was always Bones, etc. Some characters are based on historical figures, so they come with name :).But some are really hard for me to name. Damn Stan Lee for coming up with all the cool names, lol.

Q: When you celebrate anything a book a birthday do you do it in style or quietly amongst loved ones?

Some authors enjoy having release parties, but I celebrate my releases quietly, usually by going out to dinner with my husband. By release time, I’m a bundle of nerves, so less fuss and more relaxing is the way to go for me.

Q: What kind of emotions and feelings were you going through while writing AGE?

Some parts of AT GRAVE’S END were hard to write, Very emotional. As an author, I try to get into my characters’ heads to properly convey what they’re feeling, so at times, some of that can rub off on me while I write. But after I close the laptop, I can shake off the woes or fears of my characters, which is a good thing. Otherwise, my poor husband might not be able to handle it, heh.

Q: What was your biggest hard knock on the road to being published? And what was your biggest boon?

My lowest moment came when I received two rejections from places I thought were a good fit…on the day I was going to the hospital with my family to take my grandmother off life support. A note of caution: if things are already really tough in your personal life, don’t open your mail! Wait until later. I almost gave up that day, but thinking about my grandmother’s courage the last decade of her life as she dealt with a crippling stroke made me persist. Rejections from publishers/agents pale next to the determination my grandmother had shown in not letting paralysis ruin the last years of her life. If she didn’t quit with such huge hurdles in front of her, how could I quit with such small ones in comparison?

My biggest boon? That’s easy – the email that told me I’d been offered a two book deal.

Q: As you write, does a scene play out in a movie-like fashion in your mind? As if you are watching everyone through a person’s eyes?

Yes, scenes do play out in my mind like movies. I can “see” exactly how I want things to play out, but writing them is a little more difficult.

Q: I was wondering how you deal with negative feedback (if you get any) or fans that become upset with the decisions you have made in your writing?

It’s always a bummer to know that a reader was disappointed. I don’t think any author has a “whee, cool!” reaction when he/she reads a bad review. But at the same time, it’s impossible to write to reader expectation. Fans of the first book might have hated the second, or readers who loved the first and second book didn’t like the third, or readers who liked the second and third book didn’t like the first…you get the picture. For every, “I loved book A, but didn’t like book B. Can’t you write more books like A and not B?” I get another email that says, “You blew it with book A, but thank goodness you made up for it with book B!” So as an author, I write the story that I’m most passionate about, knowing it will work for some readers, but not for others. I wish I could promise readers that they will love everything I write, but all I can promise is that I’ll give every book my very best effort. That’s the only thing I have real control over.

Q: My question would be, what was your favorite convention that you’ve been to so far? And why?

Probably the Romantic Times convention, because there’s a higher interaction with readers and it has a more relaxed feel to it, in my opinion.

Q: What’s on the top of your TBR pile?

Right now I’m reading an ARC (advance reading copy) of a novel for potential quote purposes. I’ve read and enjoyed other novels by this author before, so I have high hopes that this one will be equally good.

Q: How long does it take you to write a book from beginning to end? What is the shortest time it’s taken?

On average, it takes me three months to write a first draft. The fastest I’ve done it is two months. Then it takes about another two months to edit and revise. So, about four to five months on average, with revision time included.

Q: Is there a favorite character of yours from a series.. any media.. that you really thought it was a mistake to kill off?

I won’t say it was a mistake for this character to be killed off, but I was very sad when [spoiler alert, spoiler alert, spoiler alert for Kim Harrison fans!!!!!] Kisten from the Rachel Morgan series died. I really liked his character and I will miss reading more of him. However, I’ve killed characters in my series – and will again – so I understand it’s not something authors do lightly, which is why I won’t call it a mistake that Kisten died.

Q: What or how did you come up with the characters Cat and Bones? Was there any personal experience in this series?

I came up with Cat and Bones from a dream where I saw a half-vampire arguing with a full vampire, and the full vampire was mad that she’d left him. The series grew around that. Any personal experience in the series? Um, no. I don’t kill vampires or ghouls :-).

Q: Have you thought about making Cat and Bones Tshirts?

Yes, it’s something I’d like to do. I might have a friend help me out with setting up some with CafePress. They seem like the best way to go.

Q: Are you going to introduce a new species to your books?
Demons crop up in the series, first in a short story in the FOUR DUKES AND A DEVIL anthology, and later in FIRST DROP OF CRIMSON. I’ve already had mention of black magic and witches in AT GRAVE’S END, plus psychics, so those may crop up more, too.

Q: Are there any characters for the books that you originally made up and loved, but they couldn’t fit into your stories? Are there characters you have sitting on the back burner waiting for their chance to break free?

Yes, I have many side characters where I know a lot about their backstory, but there just isn’t room in the novels to tell it. Eliza (who is in DESTINED FOR AN EARLY GRAVE) is one of those. Her history fascinates me.

Q: Many authors have added a YA series to their writing, do you intend to do this and if so can you give us a brief look at what you are planning?

I started three YA novels about two years ago, but haven’t had the time to tinker more with them. Next year, I might shop one of them on proposal, but this year, my schedule is too busy for that. Out of the three I started, my favorite is the story revolving around demons and dimensions.

Q: What is your favorite TV character of all time?

Hard, hard question to answer! Even though he was a villain, probably the character that I really loved to watch the most was Lucas Buck on American Gothic. Gary Cole played him in just a mesmerizing way. I’ve never rooted so hard for evil, lol.

Q: Was an intentional witticism to include a Black Volvo as a part of your story?

Um, no. I like black cars, and with their safety record, Volvo seemed like what Bones would buy for Cat.

Q: What are your feelings about book swapping sites?

I am cool with any legal book distribution. Used book stores, libraries, swap sites, and discount stores are great. I am not cool with internet piracy, however. Again, if it’s legal, have at it with all my blessing. If it’s not legal, I don’t support it.

Q: Did you know that Chapter 32 from One Foot in the Grave is famous? That’s all readers chat about on shelfari.

I never expected that chapter would be so talked about! Erotica authors push the envelope much more than I did in that chapter, but somehow, at every event I go to, chapter 32 comes up. It’s flattering, in a blushing sort of way :).

Q: if you could go anywhere in the world tomorrow, which country would you choose?

Scotland. Really want to go there!

    Just thought of a question

How did you form your version of vampire/ghoul creation and religion?

I love the Night Huntress series, and am looking forward to more adventures with Cat and Bones. I love to be surprised by events in a series, it’s a lot more fun than reading something that is totally predictable.

and answering the question about series and surprised — well, even in a single, non-series book, sure, I like surprises, but at the same time, even if I can predict how something will turn out, I still want to enjoy the journey there, and plenty of times, I do. It all comes down to how it’s written. :)

and #3 - my question! :) Ah, hmm, trying to be different and all. . . if you like and are familiar with Star Trek, who is your favorite Captain, and would you go into space if you could? :)

Here is a question: If the Night Huntress books were ever made into a movie/mini series, who would you like to see play Cat and Bones (and even some of the other characters)??

  227. Comment by Jeaniene Frost — July 24, 2009 @ 11:50 am

Back for more! Here we go:

Q: How did you form your version of vampire/ghoul creation and religion?

I have two theories in my books as far as the creation of vampires and ghouls. The “creationist” theory is that Cain was the first vampire, cursed by God to forever drink blood as punishment for spilling his brother, Abel’s. Ghouls claim that Cain was changed into a flesh-eater as punishment, so there’s perpetual bickering between the two as to which species came first.

The other theory revolves around vampires and ghouls being a random evolutionary mutation. Darwin at work, not God. Much like people, the vampires and ghouls in my books choose what they believe, and their beliefs differ from person to person. Even for “creationist” vampires or ghouls, there is no one religion among them. Religion is a matter of choice, and they choose whatever faith best fits their beliefs (again, much the same as people do).

Q: What is your favorite part of Bones and Cat’s relationship?

I think my answer to this question would change from book to book, because their relationship evolves as the series progresses. For DESTINED FOR AN EARLY GRAVE, my favorite part of their relationship was when they gave up expecting the other person to change. Both Cat and Bones are flawed, volatile characters. It’s one thing to love someone and overlook their flaws; another to love someone and accept those flaws.

Q: If you like and are familiar with Star Trek, who is your favorite Captain, and would you go into space if you could?

I’ll have to say Jean-Luc Picard was my favorite Trekkie captain. You can’t be surprised. English accent – duh ;-). Would I go into space? Probably not. I don’t even like to fly commercially. I can’t image flying inter-galactically!

Q: Where did you get your ideas for your books, more specifically, the characters?

Characters come to me first, with all their weird issues, personalities, and drives. The stories get built around the characters. As to where the characters come from, it varies. Sometimes a dream. Sometimes one will pop up on a page without any planning (cough, Vlad, cough). I try to be flexible about characters that I might initially think will only have small parts, but who evolve and grow into stronger roles (Tate, Spade, Mencheres, Denise).

Q: Will you be doing a book tour anytime soon?

No. I usually go to conventions, because I can see the most readers in the shortest amount of time at those. Right now I average about three conventions a year, and I’m done with cons for 2009. The rest of the year has “deadlines” written all over it, lol. Next year, I’m still formulating what conventions I’ll be attending, but tours are something that aren’t in my plans at this time.

Q: Since you like visiting graveyards, do you also do that when you travel out of the country? Which graveyard has left the most impact on you and why?

I’ve only been out of the county once, on my honeymoon, and we didn’t visit graveyards then. If I go back overseas, I’d love to check some of them out in Scotland, England, and other places.

My favorite graveyard might be Lafayette Cemetery in New Orleans. The cemeteries there are nicknamed “cities of the dead” and they really are like mini cities. So much history and beauty.

Q: Does your husband read your books also? Before publishing or after?

Heh, my husband is only allowed to read my books after they are published.

  228. Comment by Emma F. — July 24, 2009 @ 12:10 pm

Thankyou for answering my second question. Now I can’t wait to read all your books.

  229. Comment by Jocelyn S. — July 24, 2009 @ 1:29 pm

which book is your favorite in the series? why?

how does your husband react to your books? does he comment on the characters like your readers do, or does he comment more on your writing talent? which is his favorite book? (i always wonder how spouses and family members react to an author’s writing.)

where do you write the most - in your home, or somewhere else (like a cemetery)?

i can’t remember if your vampires need to be invited into a person’s home, but if they do, would ghouls also need to be invited in?

(i really hope i win one of your autographed books. it would be more valuable than the ipod for sure!)

  230. Comment by Jocelyn S. — July 24, 2009 @ 1:31 pm

duh…i’m sorry… not ipod, but gift certificate… (refer to my earlier comment)… your autographed book would be more valuable than the gift certificate no matter how much it is! :)

    I agree with Jocelyn….:)

  232. Comment by Koren Cota — July 24, 2009 @ 4:23 pm

Ok I double checked and I don’t think I missed the answers to these. I asked them in the middle of comments and compliments so they were probably just missed……

    Hi Jeaniene,

I love to be surprised when I’m reading, whatever it is. It spoils the fun for me when plots are predictable.

What do you find is the most difficult part of writing? Do you write your story in order, or skip around?

I already follow your livejournal on my blog, previously posted your book trailer on my blog. Additionally, I follow Bitten by books.

The rules are very lengthy–I just zoned out on them but I wish everyone good luck in the contest.

Jeaniene, it was great to meet you at the RWA conference this year. Success looks good on you! Every time I saw you, you were absolutely beaming! I wish you continued success and can’t wait for the next book. I’m taking off work that day :D

Love the books..all of them and am dying to rad dfaeg. you rock my socks!

1)why is cats favouite drink gin? just wondering, is it taken from someone else who u know treats gin like a “bloody security blanket”?

2)any chance of an Irish vamp..like a cool one? lol

  239. Comment by Jeaniene Frost — July 25, 2009 @ 1:21 pm

    Back again! Here we go.

Q: Which book is your favorite in the series? Why?

My favorite is always whatever book I’m working on at the moment. I try to pour myself into the characters’ mindsets and events (if I can’t get into my books, how can I expect anyone else to?) so my current work in progress will always be my favorite, because that’s what I’m most emotionally tied to.

Q: How does your husband react to your books? Does he comment on the characters like your readers do, or does he comment more on your writing talent?

My husband is very proud. I’ve been with him since I was sixteen, so he’d heard me talk about my dreams of being a writer for almost a decade and a half before I wrote my first book. Then he watched me go through the stress and rejection of the query process, through the excitement of selling my first book, and through the nervousness of wondering if anyone but me would love it. He constantly reminds me of how cool it is that the dream I had as a teen has come true – especially on days if I’m groaning about a deadline ;-). So his comments focus more on my career than on particular characters, and of course, he’s heard many of my other story ideas as well.

Q: Where do you write the most - in your home, or somewhere else (like a cemetery)?

I write in my home at a desk that is as far away from my internet computer as my townhouse can manage, lol.

Q: I can’t remember if your vampires need to be invited into a person’s home, but if they do, would ghouls also need to be invited in?

The vampires and ghouls in my books do not need to be invited in to enter a home. However, demons (which I introduced in FOUR DUKES AND A DEVIL, plus again in FIRST DROP OF CRIMSON) do need to be invited in to enter a private residence. I enjoyed flipping the “invitation” vampire trope into my demon mythology.

Q: Due to his past Bones has a bit more liberal outlook on many things in life (except when it comes to Cat), is this him, you or what the readers/publishers want?

That is Bones, not me or my publisher. When I researched the era Bones would have grown up in, as a poverty-stricken child in the mid to late seventeen hundreds, I realized he would have been surrounded by death, starvation, and sex (Bones’s mother was a prostitute, and he grew up in a dockside bordello, as you recall). Then later, Bones prostituted himself and becomes a pickpocket to avoid starvation, all while he was human. Add being sentenced to the New South Wales penal colonies, being worked almost to death, and then becoming a vampire…well. If I’d taken someone with that background, added two hundred-plus years of living in the vampire world, and then made him very strait-laced or conservative, I think readers would have flamed me for being inconsistent. So Bones’s outlook represents the viewpoint of someone who’s survived terrible things, who’s seen enough to be jaded, who lives under a different set of laws than humans do, and who doesn’t care what others think of him (aside from close friends or Cat). Once I knew his history, his personality fell into place on its own.

Q: What do you do to celebrate your books? Do you set goals and treat yourself when reach each one? Or do you wait until a book is complete and then celebrate it all?

I set little goals, and I have been known to reward myself with treats when I meet them. Once I’ve finished a novel, I’ll usually want to go out to celebrate. Nothing fancy; just dinner or a movie, but something to mark the occasion. I still get giddy with a sense of accomplishment when I finish a story. It’s something I hope always happens.

Q: What is one thing you’d love to do but have yet to get the chance?

I’d like to go on a cruise. They look fun, and some of those ships are just amazing. True floating cities. Ah, well. Maybe one day…

Q: What do you find is the most difficult part of writing? Do you write your story in order, or skip around?

Most of the time, I write my stories in linear order. This confuses my critique partner, who never writes linear, heh. If I get struck with a particularly strong inspiration for a future scene, I will jot that down, but most of the time, it’s written in order chapter by chapter.

Most difficult part of writing, hmm. Some days, it’s just finding the time to plant myself in front of my keyboard. Some days, it’s clearing my head of stuff going on in my life, so I can get into my characters’ heads instead. Some days, it’s knowing exactly how I want a scene to play out, but being tripped up on the words. So it varies.

Q: Why is cats favouite drink gin? Just wondering, is it taken from someone else who u know treats gin like a “bloody security blanket”?

Cat’s penchant for gin just came to me along with her character. I don’t know anyone who guzzles gin like she does (and if I did, I’d refer that person to the nearest AA meeting ;). It’s always fun for me as a writer when my characters bring their own quirks to the table. Makes me feel much more like I’m writing them as they should be, instead of just how I want them to be.

Q: Any chance of an Irish vamp..like a cool one?

Sure! I’ve got lots of different vamps I’d like to introduce into the series, Irish ones among others. As I mentioned before, my books represent only a sliver of the ideas/characters swirling around in my head. I hope I’ll continue to get the opportunity to share more of my ideas/characters as time goes on.

    Hi Jeaniene,
I love all your books and cannot wait for the new book to come out.
My question is this- What do you think would happen if Bones and Cat were able to have children and if it were possible what would the child be like?
A more logical question now- How many books will be in this series and what spin off series do you have in mind?
    Thanks a bunch! Keep writing!

    Happy Reading!
    Best Wishes,
    Lindsey F.

    Jeaniene -

I would first like to say that I love your books! I just recently stumbled upon your series after looking for something to fill my Sookie void. You met and surpassed what I was looking for!

I love to be surprised when I am reading. If I know the entire time what is going to happen, I lose interest quick.

I would definitely love to see some more options for Cat shirts.

Are you surprised that some of us (like me) are totally in love with your books? Does it make you feel like a success, or like you want to take on more?

    -Heather

    Hi Jeaniene!

I absolutely adore and love your books!!! I cannot wait until book 4 comes out….and Spade’s….and Mencheres….(^_^)

I have two questions: Will Tate ever find someone and lose the bitterness and resentment he has towards Cat being with Bones? Hmm, maybe Tate and Bones should just get slobberingly drunk, bar fight it out, and then perhaps through that become friends? Alcohol and violence may benefit them….I mean they both ultimately want the same thing: Cat, her safety, and her happiness. They just need to work it out.
Then question two: Are you going to continue on with the Werewolf line of stories? “Pack” was fantastic and I was left wanting more; it was too short!!!
You are an absolutely fantastic author, and I love every one of your books and stories!!

    RSVP’d.

Thought I had commented on this book, but can’t find it.
    I RSVP’d.
I am signed up for the news letter.
I purchased something from the Bloody Cafe and emailed the receipt.
Nice trailer for DESTINED FOR AN EARLY GRAVE. Checked out your website. Like the look of it and
your other books. BBB has introduced me to a lot of new (to me) authors. I work at a small county
library and am always looking for authors to introduce our patrons to. I’ll be looking for your books.
Question, was that you in the video? Nice covers for your books.

    And some more…

Q: Is there anyway to get books signed by you if we can’t make it to a convention?

If you email me your mailing address, I’ll send you out some signed bookplates. Those can be put in any book. Easier (and cheaper) than paying shipping to send me your novel for me to sign.

Q: What do you think would happen if Bones and Cat were able to have children and if it were possible what would the child be like?

Bones cannot impregnate Cat, or anyone else. He’s been a vampire for over two centuries – he has absolutely no living sperm. Cat’s birth as a half-breed happened because her father was so newly-dead (days only) and hadn’t, um, cleaned out the pipes before being with Cat’s mom (the most delicate way I could phrase that ;). Still, half-breeds are very rare because of how radically – and quickly – the body changes when a person switches from human to vampire. Vampire men almost never have viable sperm after the change, and vampire women cannot get pregnant. Otherwise, my books would be filled with half-breeds.

Q: Will Tate ever find someone and lose the bitterness and resentment he has towards Cat being with Bones?

I’m hoping so. Tate’s a good guy underneath it all and I’d like to see him happy. He’s also very stubborn, though. He’ll decide his own fate.

Q: Are you going to continue on with the Werewolf line of stories?

I’d like to do more stories on werewolves, yes. We’ll see how my schedule goes.

Q: Was that you in the video?

Wow, thanks! But no :). That’s a model, I don’t know who she is.

    Hi, Jeaniene,
I just want to take this time and say “Thank You” for being the author that you are.

My question for you is: What is the hardest thing to do as a writer & what is the hardest thing you have had to do so far with your books “Cat & Bones”?

Well I am so excited becuase the 4th book “DFAEG” comes out the day before my Birthday…..Yeah, Can any one say Happy Birthday to me….lol.

    Jamie

Jeaniene, answering your question…as a reader, it’s my opinion the book is your art and therefore your canvas to create what you wish. If I don’t like it, I’m not obligated to buy or to read :-) But within that framework, I insist the characters be consistant and without the distraction of plot holes or factual errors. Anything I can label ’sophomoric’ is a wallbanger. Out-of-the-box characters and storylines will win over predictable or formula type writing every time.

A question for you is: Is it easier or more difficult to write sequils? Does the story just flow once you establish the storyline, or is it a constant struggle to fit the pieces together?

Another question: Did you have inspiration for becoming an author? Such as a favorite author, series, genre, teacher, mentor, parent, etc?

One of my all-time favorite lines is Bones asking Cat if she still hunts vampires without panties. Too funny!

just as cat is half-vampire, can there also be a half-ghoul character?

is there a possibility that cat’s mom will be turned one day? i wonder what her future holds since her life revolves around cat and her friends.

Hey Jeaniene, I can’t wait for tomorrow so I can finally pick up the book from B&N. yayy. My question to you is: Will there be more romance in the future books, or will there be more action and fighting, or will both romance and actions scenes be equal? Another question that I have is whether or not the Night World series will have romance in it.

Well, last night the contest ended. I just want to say thanks so much to Rachel and Bitten By Books for having me. Plus, of course, a huge thank you to everyone who participated! It was fun for me. I hope it was fun for you, too.

And now, to answer the final questions…

Q: Will there be more romance in the future books, or will there be more action and fighting, or will both romance and actions scenes be equal?

Because of how tumultuous Cat and Bones are, probably the romance and action will be equal in their future books, though some books may lean slightly more toward one than the other.

Q: Will the Night World series will have romance in it?

The Night Huntress World books will skew toward being more romantic than the Cat and Bones books, though there’s still plenty of action in them.

Q: Just as cat is half-vampire, can there also be a half-ghoul character?
Because an organ exchange (the heart) is needed to make someone a ghoul, instead of just a blood exchange, I don’t see how someone could be half-ghoul. Unless a human had a ghoul heart transplant, that is…*mulls possibility*

Q: Is there a possibility that cat’s mom will be turned one day?
I can’t answer this because it would spoiler. Read Destined for an Early Grave. That’s all I can say on the topic ;).

Q: Is it easier or more difficult to write sequels? Does the story just flow once you establish the storyline, or is it a constant struggle to fit the pieces together?

There are pros and cons to writing sequels with recurring characters. The pros are, you already know a LOT about the characters, so getting to learn their personalities, tendencies, and backstory isn’t an issue. The con is, because you know so much about your characters – and likewise, so do your readers – you need to push yourself as an author to keep them, and your storyline, fresh.

Q: Did you have inspiration for becoming an author? Such as a favorite author, series, genre, teacher, mentor, parent, etc?

My inspirations were other authors, paranormal movies, and love of reading. I didn’t have a mentor. I didn’t know anyone at all in publishing when I first began shopping my novel.

Q: What is the hardest thing to do as a writer & what is the hardest thing you have had to do so far with your books “Cat & Bones”?

I’ll use part of the same answer as above: trying to keep my storylines fresh in a recurring series and showing my characters grow while still not doing anything that violates my characters’ personalities. That’s tough.

Another really tough thing is when characters I like end up getting killed. It’s happened before in the series and it will happen again. As an author, killing off a character upsets me just as much – if not more – than it upsets readers, but I think it’s necessary to create a feel of realism. Yes, this series is based on fantasy elements, but if no good person ever has bad things happen to them, then I cheat my readers on the trust they give me to write stories that feel plausible, even if those stories are based on fantasy.

Thanks again so much to everyone!
