PLEASE NOTE: This is not a fixed time event, the post just goes live at 10:30 am CDT. You can stop by any time during the day or evening and leave your questions and chat.

****************************************************

Hello everyone.  I’d like to thank all of you for participating in the contest.  I especially want to thank Rachel, Nicole, and Bitten by Books for all their hard work.  That Which Bites was a labor of love for me…even though it came about because of a dare.  A friend of mine said there was no way I could write a vampire book, and  I just had to prove her wrong. Out of the five books I’ve written (four of them, non-vampire-related), That Which Bites: The Julia Poe Vampire Chronicles was the first to be published, and with rave reviews!  Check out Amazon and Barnes & Noble online…all 5-star reviews.  I’ve never written such interesting characters before, and for those who will soon be reading, I hope you fall in love with them as I have.  Good luck with the contest!

Okay…I’m here. You guys already know I’m friends with both you and Ms. Rono on MySpace and I’ve subscribed to your newsletter. (Getting some of the emails will be a problem, but I do have the newsletter confirmation coming your way.)

    As for the first question…

Ms. Rono, what do you consider to be the best genre magazine out there at the moment? FANGORIA, RUE MORGUE, GOREZONE, SFX? Please explain your seleciton in detail.

  3. Comment by Riquita Wagner — July 20, 2009 @ 8:51 am

I have three questions. 1)The book sounds amazing. When will the next book be coming out;). 2)Who are some of your favorite authors? 3) Out of the characters in your book who is your favorite?

  4. Comment by Rebecca S — July 20, 2009 @ 9:06 am

The book sounds interesting and your reviews are great.
Do you have any other books published? How long do you spend writing a day? How long on average does it take to write a book? How did you get from having a manuscript to a published book? How much of the setting for your book is based on reality?

RSVPed; Twitter & Myspace friend to BBB (Littlemisshugs). Permanent link to BBB on myspace page.

  5. Comment by Rebecca S — July 20, 2009 @ 9:06 am

Oh forgot to say subscribe to BBB newsletter.

  6. Comment by Celis T. Rono — July 20, 2009 @ 9:13 am

Hi WeirdArchives. Good to hear from you. I have to say that I don’t read vamp magazines. In fact, I don’t read magazines all that often anymore. I don’t know why. I did like Fangoria when I was in college, though. But that was a long time ago.

Hello Riquita. The book will be coming out late next year. I’m still in the process of writing it. As for my favorite authors…John Steinbeck, Graham Green, Richard Matheson,Juliette Maurillier and lots more. Of all the characters in my book, I love Poe the best. She’s not that tall, she’s scarred and harassed by the new vampire order but she doesn’t give up. She gets hurt a lot but she picks herself up and fights the good fight.

  7. Comment by Amanda H — July 20, 2009 @ 9:17 am

Ms. Rono, Your books sound amazing. I RSVPed on here.

    I have two questions:

    What writer inspired to write?
Do you have any tips for anyone who would like to write a book?

  8. Comment by WeirdArchives — July 20, 2009 @ 9:24 am

Okay, since Comic-Con is right around the corner (and I know I’ll be stepping on some toes here), a question about conventions in general. In your opinion, Ms. Rono, do you think the major genre conventions like Comic Con are becoming too commercial and losing the true purpose of having fans and creators meet in informal and formal situations without having Hollywood exploiting them for their own purposes?

  9. Comment by Heather C — July 20, 2009 @ 9:26 am

Hi Celis!!! The book sounds awesome!!! Vamps and a gun toting nun…what more do you need. :) I’m just too curious, and put this on the top of my want list. So, will the dare be continued for a round 2?

  10. Comment by Medievalgrrl — July 20, 2009 @ 9:27 am

Welcome Celis. How do you keep up with your world building?

RSVP’d , added as friend on Facebook, Myspace and add website to blog http://cc-chronicles.blogspot.com

  11. Comment by A. Boyd — July 20, 2009 @ 9:31 am

Hey Celis isn’t crazy amazing LOL!!!! Ok so I read the book and I couldn’t put it down, what I liked more than anything was the fact that it was one action scene after the other. I have to ask because I’m sure everyone wants to know, will there be any more books in this series or is this the only one?

    Thanks,
    Amanda

RSVP here at bittenbybooks.com and I will have to find my newsletter acceptance. Thanks.

  12. Comment by Cyd J — July 20, 2009 @ 9:35 am

    Good morning Celis,

If we hung character Julia upside down what would fall from her pockets?

  13. Comment by chris swan — July 20, 2009 @ 9:37 am

    Good morning Celis,

My question is what is your favorite genre?

    and

What is your least favorite genre?

    I guess thats two questions.

  14. Comment by Lisa M. — July 20, 2009 @ 9:42 am

Hi Celis! I must admit, I am not famliar with your previous work, but I do love vampires! And how cool that you wrote this book on a dare and now it’s getting great reviews! awesome! I have requested you on FB, I will post the contest link, and I will RT on twitter. oh, and I did RSVP for this event. Have a great day!

  15. Comment by Katie D — July 20, 2009 @ 9:42 am

Good Morning Celis! Do you have a ritual that you do before you sit to write your books?

I have RSVP on Facebook and Blood Bank. I belong to the newsletter, Ning, Facebook, Myspace, Twitter and I have the BBB on my blog roll.

  16. Comment by Celis T. Rono — July 20, 2009 @ 9:43 am

Amanda: I was a Sherlock Holmes freak. I read his adventures at age nine. I also got into Edgar Allan Poe at that age, so I would have to blame them both for getting me into the spirit.

Weirdarchives: Yes, I’ve been going to Comicon in San Diego for years now…barring the last couple of years. Yes. It has become too commercial. It seems like everything is geared toward big movie studio films and video games. Plus, it gets so crowded at the convention that it’s hard to get around or see anything.

Heather and Amanda: Yes, there will be a sequel. Working on it now and having a great time. It takes place two years later so Poe will be more mature and self-assured. Sainvire will be as interesting as ever.

  17. Comment by Rebecca M. — July 20, 2009 @ 9:46 am

Ms. Rono, I’m so glad you did this interview. I will admit that I’d not heard of your book before BBB posted the announcement for your interview but that’s the wonderful thing about this site. I’ve found many new authors here. I checked your website and your book looks very interesting. With all of the vampire fiction out there right now yours looks to be a breath of fresh air. I wish you all the luck and success with your books.

I have another question for you, If your series became a T.v. show or movie who would you like to play your main characters?

Hi * Waves * I’ll be asking my usual question on Bittenbybooks, it’s really neat to see the varieties of answers to this: If you could collaborate with any author out there, dead or alive, on a writing project, who would you chose? And who are your literary/writing idols?

    * I RSVPed
    * Bittenbybooks is the top link on my blogger and permanent link (visionarydruid.blogspot.com)

    * Posted it on my livejournal (Morriga)

    * Already have her friended on myspace, and already apart of the Blood Bank!

  23. Comment by Jennifer Lauren — July 20, 2009 @ 10:32 am

Hello…I made it. (Just got out of class.)

    I have two questions:
    1. What was the hardest part about writing the book?

    and

    2. I remember you telling me that you based a character off your brother, which character was that in the book?
    Thanks, as always.
    Jennifer Lauren.

  24. Comment by Libby L — July 20, 2009 @ 10:33 am

Hi Celis! :) I RSVP’d - I’ll reply again with a list of what I did for the contest. I just wanted to say I’m really looking forward to reading your book!

The only question that is coming to mind is:

If you could time travel.. where would you go? Is there anyone in particular you would want to meet/spend time with? Or if you could bring anyone from history 1into our modern day world for a time - who would it be & why? OK, so that ended up being more than one actual question. ;) Sorry!

Hope you have a great day! Congrats on the release of the book! :)

  25. Comment by Sandy G — July 20, 2009 @ 10:41 am

    Hi Celis,

Do you normally read vampire books or did you have to read some
    as research for this book?

I RSVP’d and I subscribe to the BBB newsletter and follow on goodreads

  26. Comment by WeirdArchives — July 20, 2009 @ 10:41 am

    Comic book questions.:

What comic book are you a steady fan of? Is it a recent introduction (or in the case of one of my favorites HOUSE OF MYSTERY, redux) or a classic that hasn’t been published for awhile?

Which company do you feel does justice to the Horror and crime genre and which one should do a better job?

What character is your ideal superhero? Come to think of it, Which writer has been your inspiration for some of your work?

What are your thoughts of the recent limited series from DC Comics entitled THE WEDNESDAY COMICS, which harkens back to a time where individual comic strips were newspaper-length and looked like masterpieces of art?

  27. Comment by Amanda H — July 20, 2009 @ 10:42 am

A side note: I’m subscribed to bbb

  28. Comment by Darlene Ruiz — July 20, 2009 @ 10:50 am

    Hi Celis,

How many books do you think you will write for the Julia Poe Chronicles? I read the first one and loved it and am awaiting the the next.

    Thank you
    Darlene Ruiz

  29. Comment by Lexi Sylver — July 20, 2009 @ 10:54 am

    Hi Celis!

I am so excited about your launch! You are so talented and you deserve every ounce of success that is coming to you.

I have one question. If you were to make your book into a movie, who would you get to play the roles of Julia and Kaleb? (Hey, who knows, it could happen!)

    Talk to you soon,
    Lexi

  30. Comment by Celis T. Rono — July 20, 2009 @ 11:18 am

CydJ: If you hang Poe upside down, keys, stale breath mints, rosary, gum, pocket knife, Bandaid, and tissue would fall out of her pocket. Great ?

Katie: I eat breakfast beforehand…that’s my main ritual before writing. I also take a lot of breaks and play with my dogs. Boring stuff.

HeatherH: How surprised were my friend when they found out about my book? Well they were really shocked. I didn’t let the cat out of the bag until I had the published book in my hands. I’m tight-lipped about some things… And if I can choose someone to meet, dead or alive, I would choose Ghandi and Mark Twain. Great questions.

SandyG: I stopped reading vampire books a while ago. When I decided to write this book, I made sure not to read anything paranormal or urban fantasy related. I wanted everything to come from my head without the influence of other authors.

Libby L: I travel once or twice a year because if I don’t I go crazy. I’m going to India this October, a country I’ve been wanting to go to since forever. The other two places I’m itching to go to is the Galapagos Islands and Kenya.

Raonaid Luckwell: If I could collaborate with writers dead or alive, I would have to say John Steinbeck and Richard Matheson.

CherylM: My favorite genre to read? I was an American Lit major so I love reading the classics.

AmandaH: Who would I want to play the main character? Well, Poe is multi-racial so I envisioned her to look like Shannyn Sossamon. As for Kaleb Sainvire…I’m not quite sure.

JenniferLauren: Hi Jennifer. Writing was the easy part. Getting an agent and publisher was a pain in the rump. As for the character based on my brother…that would be Joseph. Same personality, same sense of humor.

WeirdArchives: I love comic books. I have a growing collection. I like Fables, Y The Last Man, anything Allan Moore, Steve Niles, and lots more. My ideal superhero is Batman. He’s just a man. No superpowers, just his brains. As for a writer that influenced my writing…that would be Hemingway and Cormac McCarthy. They write to the point without using too many flowery descriptions. As for the Wednesday Comics, it’s a pretty interesting concept but they won’t fit into my comics drawers. I like indie comics most of all especially Vertigo (although they’re owned by DC)

  31. Comment by Maria Pesito — July 20, 2009 @ 11:27 am

    RSVP’d yesterday.
I’m so excited to be here at a live-online launch!
Celis, my question for you is:
Would you ever want to become a vampire like the ones in your book? Or would you stay human, like the tough vampire-fighting Poe?

P.S. Kaleb is to die for. He’s an amazing character!

  32. Comment by WeirdArchives — July 20, 2009 @ 11:30 am

Good choices on writers. I particularly enjoyed Mr. McCarthy’s THE ROAD. Arguably the best post-apocalyptic novel in recent memory and richly deserved its many awards.

Unfortunately, the question about writers dealt with comic books. Sorry if I wasn’t specific. My fault entirely.

  33. Comment by Rodrigo S — July 20, 2009 @ 11:32 am

Hello, Celis, I was wondering, do you feel bummed that you only got published on paranormal romance / urban fantasy and not with one of the 3 books you finished before this one, what might be called your original or main genre?

I added both BBB and both urls for Celis T Rono here: http://sscout.wordpress.com/ It’s all the way down at the bottom.

as facebook.com/rodrigosz I’m a fan and fb friend to Celis T Rono, I’m in the facebook BBB group, and fb friend of Rachel Smith, and, I think that’s all? ^.^

  34. Comment by Celis T. Rono — July 20, 2009 @ 11:36 am

Darlene Ruiz: How many books will I write? I think I’ll stop at three. Trilogies are best. I can’t do a LKH and write 17 Anita Blake books. I’m not that prolific.

Lexi Sylver: As for movie stars playing Poe and Sainvire…Maybe Shannyn Sossamon for Poe since she’s multi-racial and Christian Bale or Clive Owen for Sainvire? I really don’t know about Sainvire…too hard.

Maria Pesito: No, I don’t want to become a vampire. I like the sun too much. I would like to be Poe, however. She kicks butt and she’s indomitable. I love her strength. Thanks for saying Kaleb is to die for. I think so, too. He’s the perfect vampire for me. He’s not one of those vamps with their shirts unbuttoned and when he raises his eyebrows at women they automatically fall to their knees to do his bidding. Tired of that jazz.

Is there going to be a theme to your books like the Twilight Saga

  38. Comment by Jackie U — July 20, 2009 @ 12:03 pm

Ever since Nicole told me about this book, I’ve been dying to read it!

How far do you think word of mouth goes for new novels? I’ve noticed that having a big Internet presence seems to help authors, but do you think it’s necessary?

RSVP’d, friended Celis on Facebook, have BBB on my blogroll, Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, subscribe to the newsletter, and am a member of the Blood Bank. Also shared on Facebook. : )

Thank you for sharing your gift!

    Hi Celis,
I know this may be a touchy question so forgive me now
if I upset anyone or step on anyone’s toes but I’ve dying to ask.
Some of the greatest vampire authors out there have been focusing more
on sex in their books. I am wondering, since you were asked to add more sex
to your next book in the series and we know about the erotica stories (which were awesome by the way). My questions is this, should we be expecting your main character to become more sexual within in the next few novels (I know this series will go far), adding more lovers and love interests? I know this is a series debate on many sites as half like it and half hate it. I lean both ways enjoying it and sometimes feeling it can go to far. So this was the question I had to ask.
    Thanks so much!!!

  41. Comment by Lizz H — July 20, 2009 @ 12:24 pm

    Celis,
Thanks for coming!!! Can’t wait to get my hands on the book. :D

My first question is in two parts:
Do you listen to music when you write? And if so, what types?

    My second question is:

Amanda H: Yes, I’ve chosen a title for the next book. It’s going to be called Dead Surround. Hope that’s alright… There’s a continuing theme of humans finding their place among vampires without getting eaten. A new society must be built from scratch and it’s going to be a hard road for Poe and Sainvire.

Jackie U: Nicole’s been great. She helped me out a lot. The publishing industry is hit badly by the economy. There’s hardly any funds for PR and marketing. Word of mouth and the power of the internet are really important tools for writers nowadays.

    Darkreader: If I could be a paranormal character, I’d be a vampire…or a mermaid.

Sara R: For those who don’t know…I was asked by my publisher to write three erotica shorts and to use real erotica language which I would never ever dream of using (see my blog for the stories). They told me I need to sex up the next book. I remember reading Anita Blake in the early 90s. I loved it. Then as the books progressed, they became more sexual in nature. The books were good, but they got too S/M for me. LKH is a very talented author, don’t get me wrong. I’ve come to the conclusion to be faithful to the character of Poe. Sure, there will be more sex but that won’t be the focal point of the story. And it’s not going to be over-the-top.

Lizz H: Yes, I listen to music when I write. They range from Miles Davis, to indie rock, to whatever song I fancy at the time. Sometimes I don’t listen to music at all. I don’t eat when I’m writing. It’s too distracting. I take lots of breaks, though, so I snack on cereal mostly.

    Hi Celis!

    Welcome to BBB today.

I haven’t been able to read your book yet but I too have heard nothing but praises.

Anyway, you said you wrote this book because of a dare. Now that you know you can write a book and people love it, would you have done anything differently in the dare or even writing process???

Not only did Raonaid Luckwell remind me on her blog. Celis is a friend of mine on MySpace back when she wasn’t such a big hit. It is so cool to have watch you grow. I hope I’m as lucky as you with my writing. I already emailed her and thanked her for such a cool giveaway. I hope you didn’t laugh too hard over the fact I wouldn’t know how to use an IPOD lol.
I too am working on a Vampire series on the side… of my major project book, do you have dreams that inspire characters or do they pop up and bug you until you sit down and just write it out. Haven’t read the book yet, money issues but, I am very curious on your writing process if you don’t mind me asking.
GL and I’m so happy to have see you grown into a bigger fan base.
    Best of Luck

    Hi Celis,
Wow all 5 stars reviews, now that sounds good.

I have always loved to write…so my Q are: What would you say to an author wannabe?

    I RSVPed

  47. Comment by Jennifer Lauren — July 20, 2009 @ 12:53 pm

In the book, toward the end, Joseph began to address Poe as his sister. Poe herself even yelled that someone had thrown her brother off the train. Is Joseph really her brother Joseph or did they just become so close that they call each other “Sis” and “brother”?

P.S.: I like the title for the new book.

so has the book sales been doing well. hopefully will be able to read it soon i can’t wait i hope you have lots of fun writing the next one rsvp

  49. Comment by Celis T. Rono — July 20, 2009 @ 1:46 pm

Deb Greene: Hi Deb. My writing process consist of sitting down, staring at the computer screen and writing the word, “The”. That word or the first word I used zooms me into the world I’m trying to create. I don’t do well with outlines, lazy person that I am. I just take notes and the rest is up to my fingers.

Linda Ak: For author wannabes, I say don’t give up. Keep writing. Keep sending those query letters, and most importantly, never stop editing your work.

Jennifer Lauren: Poe and Joseph aren’t related. They just consider each other family. They hit it off so-to-speak.

With the LA cattle moved to the valley will Poe move around or is she going to stay in LA and keep working it out? Also who are going to take the places of council memebers?

Oh and ^5 on using the Pio Pico mansion in the book, that place rocks. My dad was actually a worker for the City of Pico Revera for 17 years. I knew exactly were you were with that LOL!!!!

    Hi Celis.

I admire that you stopped reading vampire books when you decided to write this book, It’s a great idea that you didn’t want to be influenced by other authors. So being that you arn’t currently reading anything paranormal/urban fantasy related, who and what are you currently reading besides your own work?

    Hello,
Ok hopefully my questions won’t be too repetitive. Am in a bit of a rush today so can’t check all that have already been asked.

Do you have a routine when you write?

Was it very different writing a vampire novel versus what you have already written?

I will be back with more questions and to do more contest stuff later

    Thanks, Koren
    p.s. I RSVP’d

  60. Comment by Celis T. Rono — July 20, 2009 @ 3:27 pm

Carmen R: Hi Carmen. I’m a big fan of Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend. He was the one who de-glamorized vampires.

Kimberly B: My boyfriend and sometime editor said that Radiohead’s Hail To The Thief would be the perfect soundtrack for the book.

Amanda B: I can tell you that Poe’s not going to the valley - more like the Central Valley by way of West L.A./Santa Monica. That’s so funny that you’ve heard of Pico Rivera. That’s not a very popular city in L.A. county!

Jollee Finch: I like to observe so I tend to make my characters out of people I meet or eavesdropped to. I always have a notebook and pen handy just in case I hear something funny. I admire a lot of people but I would like to meet Aung San Suu Kyi. She won the Nobel Peace Prize for standing up against the fascist government of Burma. She’s been under house arrest for over ten years.

Jackie U: My favorite way of spreading the news about my book is through the internet. Like now (:

Elie N: I would classify my book as an urban fantasy.

Tynga: My friend bet me that I wouldn’t be able to write a vampire book since I write other kinds of books. When I did finish That Which Bites, my friend was the first one to read it. She conceded her defeat by paying up: A hundred dollars and dinner at a sushi restaurant. Very nice memory. Now she brags that she told me to write this book all along.

Koren Kota: My other books tend to be on the serious side…history ): Writing TWBs was so fun for me. I got to invent all sorts of scenarious and create a new world. I had a blast.

  61. Comment by Jennifer Lauren — July 20, 2009 @ 3:47 pm

TWB had many languages used. Do you speak any other language(s) other than English?

  62. Comment by Amanda Boyd — July 20, 2009 @ 5:11 pm

Sweet. Yeah not very many people know about the Whitter/Pico/Montebello area, and to see you have used it is awesome. Oh and you did use Olivera St, bonus. LOL!!!

Will you be using the praminad(sp) or the Peir? Can’t wait for the next installment.

  63. Comment by Shirley H — July 20, 2009 @ 5:37 pm

Thanks for offering up awesome prizes and for taking on all these questions. Congrats on the rave reviews - have added this one to my wishlist.

Questions: What do you think is the key thing that makes readers say they can’t put your book down? I’m assuming this is your only published work cause I couldn’t find any others. Would you consider publishing your earlier books, and would that be with or without some rewrites?

  64. Comment by Celis T. Rono — July 20, 2009 @ 5:41 pm

Kainani: Thanks for the question. I’m currently reading three books (I have books in every room and my purse): Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Graham Green’s The Quiet American, and Mark Twain’s Letters from the Earth.

Jennifer Lauren: Since L.A. is so multi-cultural, I just had to make Poe an ethnic smorgasbord. I took German in high school and Spanish in college. I also taught English in Japan for a year but I only remember food names. I’m terrible with languages! I had to research slang words in three different languages…it was fun.

Amanda Boyd: I’m not using Santa Monica pier…but the beginning of the book is set at the Venice boardwalk.

  65. Comment by JuanFinch — July 20, 2009 @ 5:52 pm

I can read your book over and over! Action and the perfect amound and type of humor.
I’m wondering some of your favorite movies. Not just vampire/horror (although I’m curious)…but other types too.

    Awesome, best place, IMHO LOL!!!!!!

  67. Comment by Jolee Finch — July 20, 2009 @ 6:22 pm

Awwww wow, that’s a very interesting method you use to develop your characters and wanting to meet Aung San Suu Kyi! ^_^ That’s amazing. I also wanted to know:

How much emphasis do you put on plot and characterization? Because in my own writing, my characters’ traits, emotions, etc tend to outline the plot, not always, but it’s something I keep doing. ^^ It’s draining sometimes because detailing characters requires so much emotional input, at least the way I do it. I do find it entertaining though :P Thoughts?

  69. Comment by Celis T. Rono — July 20, 2009 @ 7:03 pm

Shirley H: Many have told me they couldn’t put the book down. I credit the characters for that and for the many action scenes. Poe’s chemistry with Sainvire is quite palpable so that may be another reason.

JuanFinch: If you can read the book over and over then I’m flattered. Thanks a lot! As for my favorite movies…there are tons. I’m a movie buff so that’s a hard question. I’d have to say that Harold and Maude, Croupier, Flirting, 400 Blows, and Casablanca are all up there.

Jolee Finch: Thanks Jolee for that question. I’m like you. My book is character driven. The plot is important, too, of course, but if the characters are not convincing and worth empathizing with, then the book will not be as meaningful to readers. And you’re right, it is very taxing to focus on characters.

  73. Comment by Lisa Richards — July 20, 2009 @ 7:17 pm

Right off the bat, I must congratulate you on your book. I read the reviews on Amazon and 28 out of 28 give you 5 stars. That is so great as I expect to see at least one person that doesn’t rate it at the very top only because they picked up a book type that they never like and then expect to be overwhelmed. Apparently this book has overwhelmed them all. Just added it to my TBR list. Is this the beginning of a series? Will we see more of Julia Poe? My main question however is an economics question. I have noticed that a lot of writers are going to the (what I call) super sized paperback. These generally run double the price of a normal paperback. The print isn’t bigger, we may get a word more per line, the blank edges around the print are 3 times as wide, they are easier to hold but more expensive to ship as they weigh more so what do we as readers get for twice the amount of money paid out? We know what the writers get (and boy do you all deserve it) but this just means that for most of us if we purchase the oversized paperback we buy one less book. Why should we as buyers spend twice as much on a paperback?

  74. Comment by Carol M. — July 20, 2009 @ 7:45 pm

Hi Celis. What genre do you typically read in for fun?

  75. Comment by Jennifer Lauren — July 20, 2009 @ 7:49 pm

Someone, not too long ago, told me that if you could make up a convensing lie quickly or on the spot, which ever wording you prefer, that you would more than likely make an excellent fiction writer. Do you think there’s any truth behind that?

  76. Comment by Celis T. Rono — July 20, 2009 @ 7:52 pm

Beverly G: I’m very fickle. One day I like a certain actor to portray Sainvire and the next I throw him overboard for another. Sainvire has been so many men that he’s become his own person, really. Confusing, I know. As for the cover…I have to admit that I hate the original. It’s too cartoonish. That’s why we hired another artist and you can see his work above. That cover will be available late next month. The artist, Tariq Raheem, was fantastic. He did exactly what I specified. I’m very happy with it.

Dina: Do I have other special talents? LOL! I can’t cook, swim, sing, drink without getting ill… basically I have very few talents. I can watch movies 24 hours straight and read a book in no time.

Sharon K: Since I won the bet, my friend has given me $100 and a sushi dinner. And since the publication of the book, she’s happily taking credit for That Which Bites. One time I even heard her say she wrote it! Friends…what can you do?

Lisa Richards: Yes. This book will be a series. I believe it will be a trilogy. As for the state of book publishing nowadays, I agree with you. If a book is not long enough, publishers tend to widen the margin and enlarge the font. It’s pretty low because it wastes paper and is hell to ship. I had to insist to make the margins less than an inch at one point.

Carol M: I usually like to read most things. I read American Lit, women’s lit, classics, biographies (especially about dead presidents - boring, I know), urban fantasy, fantasy, and comics/graphic novels.

Jennifer Lauren: It would help if you can think on your feet. Lying can trigger that. However, I have a friend who’s a writer and she’s the most honest, most benign human being in the world. And she’s no liar. So I don’t know if you have to be a good liar to be a good writer.

  77. Comment by Amanda — July 20, 2009 @ 8:04 pm

i haven’t had a chance to read your book yet, but hearing everyone else rave… it is definately getting moved up in the to be read pile.

i read a lot of supernatural fiction. i am especially fond of vampires and i love to see how various authors consturct origin myths for their vamps.
do you have a origin myth for your vampires and if so how did you come up with it?

you said you didn’t read any of the genre while you were working on the book. do you think that allowed you to create something different?

on the topic of sex… do you think that erotica gets in the way of a story or do you think that it can be used to reinforce the development of the character?

  78. Comment by Michelle B. — July 20, 2009 @ 8:33 pm

    Hello,

I RSVP’d and am here. I sent all my info with links for postings, groups, friends, etc. by email. Hope that was what I was supposed to do.

Celis, did you do anything special for the friend who motivated you with the dare about writing a book with vampires, especially with all the success it has had???

    Michelle B.

  79. Comment by WeirdArchives — July 20, 2009 @ 8:34 pm

    Music time:

Do you sometimes play music when you’re writing a passage to get into a certain mood, such as something sinister in a tense moment or a ‘road trip song’ when the characters are travelling?

Any groups or singers you especially dig? Right now, Jack White’s new side band the Dead Weather is amusing me. The video for ‘Treat Me Like Your Mother’ looks right at home in Ms. Poe’s universe. (Even did a little review of the music at the iTunes Store. Hope you and the guys read it at your leisure.)

What do you think would be on Ms. Poe’s iPod, assuming she has one and they exist in that universe? Something classic rock or hip-hop or even Old School blues from Nashville?

  80. Comment by Celis T. Rono — July 20, 2009 @ 8:46 pm

Amanda: I do have an origin myth but it’s quite vague on purpose. I didn’t want the book to be anything like Anne Rice or LKH or Dracula for that matter. I think it did help that I didn’t read anything vampire related when writing this book. I think the book came away fresh and new…something altogether different. You ask if I think sex can get in the way. In some ways it helps certain books. In a lot ways it doesn’t. If the focus is concentrated on sex and how the characters are going to arrive there, then the plot and the writing will tend to be a bit tepid. I usually focus on the characters and the plot. When they do have sex, it’s the perfect time for them to couple. Sex is incidental not integral. Ertotica stories, however, is a different matter.

Michelle B: As for the friend who motivated me…we still hang out every weekend. I think that’s reward enough :) And I gave her a free copy of the book and bought her a ticket to Hawaii.

WeirdArchives: Yes. Sometimes I listen to music when I’m writing depending on my mood. I do own an iPod myself. I have over 25,000 songs. I listen to Jazz (20s-30s & beebop, 60s), alternative, indie rock - Pixies, Radiohead, Jawbreaker, Silversun Pickups, etc.), oldies, classic rock, etc.

Leslie Cheah: I can’t say anything bad about the publishing industry. It’ll get back to them eventually and I’ll be in trouble:) Ikay, so they’re a little evil. But the truth is, they are in a bind. They are hard hit because of the economy. I was told that fiction stories are the lowest priority now because they don’t sell as much as non-fiction or children’s books - plus they are sure bets for libraries that buy per county.

Stephanie M: Hi Stephanie. I’m glad you like the book. When you’re done reading TWB can you review on Amazon or Barnes? I appreciate it. As for my favorite movie, that would have to be Harold and Maude. My favorite author is John Steinbeck.

Sorry if this has already been asked. Will this be the start of a series? And is there any interest in publishing the other 4 books you have written?

Donna S: Yes. That Which Bites will be a series. I’ll stop at three, I think. As for the other books I’ve written, I’m currently editing them to death. I’m also writing the sequel right now so I’ve got a really crazy schedule.

Stacy Smith: Hi Stacy. I am going to write more books about Julia Poe…I believe two more. Yes, Rachel and the BBB crew are awesome. They do so much for writers. I’m in awe of them.

  87. Comment by Mardel S — July 21, 2009 @ 2:23 am

    Hello, Ms Rono

You mentioned that you’ve written 4 other books, though That Which Bites is the first to be published. I read the excerpt a few weeks ago, (pretty good), and now I’m wondering what genre are the other 4 books in?

Is it possible that those might be published?

Hi Celis! I finished the book last night and it was great!!! I can’t wait for the next one. I wrote a review on Amazon and Barnes. I’m also gonna review it on Goodreads. Thanks!

  90. Comment by Pam R. — July 21, 2009 @ 7:02 am

I’m just curious as to why your friend didn’t think you could write a vampire book? I would have taken that as a dare and done it too, just like I moved to Singapore for a couple of years when my mom said I’d never go.

  91. Comment by Celis T. Rono — July 21, 2009 @ 8:02 am

Mardel S: Hi. Thanks for the question. The books are totally different from each other. One is set in the 18 Century about the one year take over of the British of one of the archipelagos in the Pacific. Another is about a literal wall that separates the classes in Oxford, England. One is about a young American man who goes to Japan to teach and finds himself surrounded by excess. Another is about a bitter, legless man trying to survive the London blitz. Alot of them are historical…contemporary literature, I guess. Very different from That Which Bites. I’m currently editing a few of them.

Stephanie M: Thanks Stephanie! I’m glad you liked the book. I appreciate you reviewing it.

Pam R: I think my friend thought I couldn’t do it because the books I’ve previously written were history based. I guess she thought I was too stodgy. I like being challenged. I mean, I was told to write erotica by my publishers which I’d never done before and just to see if I can write sex scenes. And I did it. Actually a writers collective came out of it after I posted the three I wrote. Check my blog (http://celisrono.wordpress.com/). Good for you for proving your mom wrong! Singapore must have been exciting.

  92. Comment by Ester — July 21, 2009 @ 9:14 am

    Hi Celis!
I see that you had written four other books but this one was published first. Have you gotten any “bites” on the others since this one was released?
I just added BBB on my blog list at AuthorBlogSpot.blogspot.com

Good luck with your other books, Celis. Let us know when they get published as well.

    I do love vampires!

What are your vampires like? weaknesses? strengths?

Will there be more books in this series?

Thanks to Celis and Rachel for this great contest!

  94. Comment by Raquel Vega-Grieder — July 21, 2009 @ 12:37 pm

Hi Celis I Was Just Wondering If You Have Any Writing Rituals? Is There Just Something That You Must Do In Order To Sit Down And Write Your Books?

  95. Comment by JuanFinch — July 21, 2009 @ 2:54 pm

I wrote yesterday about movies…good ones, Celis! Harold and Maude is hella funny in a dark way…and did you know it’s catSteven’s birthday today?

Do you really like kung fu (or other martial arts) movies? What are ur favorites? I ask because Poe puts in some good action in the book

I hope everyone reading this tells their friends about That Which Bites

  96. Comment by Celis T. Rono — July 21, 2009 @ 3:07 pm

Patricia: The vampires in Poe’s world have differing powers. Some can fly, some can lift boulders, some can walk in the sun. And yes. This is going to be a series.

Raquel Vega-Grieder: I have two rituals before sitting down to work. I have to have a good breakfast and my desk needs to be cleared of clutter.

JuanFinch: I do like kung fu movies…Samurai too. I like Enter The Dragon, of course. That movie was mentioned in the first few pages of the book. I also like Drunken Master, and Hong Kong cinema.

  97. Comment by Vale — July 21, 2009 @ 3:53 pm

    Hi Ms. Rono!
I admit I had never heard of your work before I got the newsletter from BBB, but it really sounds interesting. And Agatha Christie started writing on a dare too, so, who knows? Good luck!
My question for you is: lately many books represent vampires as (almost) just-like-you kind of guys, who’re just trying to blend in, live a normal life, and possibly have a lovelife. Your vampires instead stand out as the bad guys, enslaving humans and milking them for blood. Why this choice? And what do you think of the new trend?

    I RSVPed.
I already subscribed BBB’s newsletter from my second e-mail (nemesis18).

    About your work with erotica…

Do you sometimes feel aroused by your writings or even disturbed? I’ll confess I have had some scary moments with my pieces and even preparation for pieces in my head.

Is there such a thing as too much research in a project? (And you can apply this question to writing in general.)

Do you feel there is too much emphasis on a certain sub-genre in erotica, such as lesbianism or trioism or BDSM? Do you wish someone would attempt a tale involving a lesser-known fetish?

Do you wish writers of erotica would put more plot and character into their work instead of going straight into the sex?

  105. Comment by Patricia Barraclough — July 21, 2009 @ 9:25 pm

I RSVP’d and subscribe to the BBB newsletter. I made a purchase from the Bloody Cafe store this week and emailed a copy of the receipt to you.
Read the excerpt on your website, Celis. This sounds like it is a very good book. This may have already been asked, but will you be making this a series following your character, Julia Poe? I’m guessing since it says chronicles, it will be a series. I think you’ve found your niche. Keep on writing. Patricia B.

  106. Comment by Leah — July 21, 2009 @ 10:24 pm

will you be using the same characters in future books? Are you currently worrking on a new book? do you have others that can be purchased?
once I find a author that I really like i seem to devour their work. I can’t wait til my book gets here!
    Thank you!

  107. Comment by Celis T. Rono — July 21, 2009 @ 11:08 pm

Vale: The new trend of vampires trying to pass as humans and falling in love is an old concept. It’s just refreshed by books like Twilight. I tried to stay away from that because I wanted to create a grungier world where nothing is quite black and white. I also wanted to make it a political book, i.e. enslavement, new world order, multi-culturalism, etc. That Which Bites is more than a love story…it’s a statement.

Michelle H: What I like to do in my spare time? I like to travel, go to the movies, do Sudoku, try exotic foods, paint, read, and hang out with my man.

Valorie T: I guess I never get tired of watching The Prestige, Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, Office Space, Casablanca, and the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

Weirdarchives: Whoa that’s a lot of questions! I’ll answer them briefly as my wrists are giving me trouble. Yes. I sometimes do get aroused when I’m writing a sex scene but there are always distractions that make me forget the feeling. I don’t think there can ever be too much research…especially if your piece is historically based. I’ve only written four erotica stories. If there are alot of sub genres/fetishes in erotica then there must be a demand for them. It would be nice to have plot and a solid story in erotica stories but some people just jump right into sex. That’s okay, too.

Patricia B: Yes. This will be a series. The main characters are going to be in the next books. Thank you for the question.

Leah: I will be using the same characters in the future. I’m working on the sequel now.

Sorry for the top-heavy questions last time. Should’ve taken your wrists into consideration. Please accept my apologies.

Here’s a quick question dealing with the Kindle. What are your thoughts about what happened with Amazon pulling the copies of George Orwell’s 1984 and ANIMAL FARM from those Kindle devices that legitimately bought a copy of those books before the Orwell estate pulled the rights?

  111. Comment by LadyVampire — July 22, 2009 @ 12:51 pm

Congrats on your release! I look forward to reading it. Here’s my question to you: What made you pick vampires? And why did your friends say that it was less likely you would write a novel about vamps?

Nicole H: Hey Nicole! Long time no hear. I still remember your generosity and I thank you again for all your help! As for weird combo of foods…I like eating Mexican food with Thai food ie, Tamales & pad thai. I also like potato salad with ketchup, dipping taquitos in vanilla yogurt, grilled cheese sandwich with crushed peanuts, and baked beans with brussel sprouts.

Virginia: I’ve always liked the paranormal. As a kid, I read H.P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe, Dracula, Ray Bradbury, and Richard Matheson. They blew my mind.

Weirdarchives: It seems like a copyright issue, of course, but I believe the people who already bought the novels beforehand should be able to keep them. Amazon pulling stories from people’s Kindle is very Big Brotherish. I mean if a bookstore sold an uncopyrighted book, the sense police won’t come knocking at the door of the person that bought it to confiscate it right? Just because they can do it quietly doesn’t make it any creepier.

Ladyvampire: I think my friend chose vampires because I was obsessed with the undead when we were kids. That was all I talked about. Bram Stoker, Richard Matheson, Anne Rice…
