Interview:

Hi Jennifer!

Welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!

I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been very interesting to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a writer! Readers, if you haven’t done so already please stop by and get your copy of Jennifer’s newest mass market book release Once Bitten, Twice Shy.

BBB: What are the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects of writing?

JR: Challenges: It’s 2009 and folks have been writing stories ever since some dude whose brain was overflowing with words figured out that lead left marks.  So it’s tough to come up with something new and interesting.  Characters who feel real and yet have never stepped into fiction before.  Situations that surprise while they fit into the limited kinds of conflict available for writers to exploit.  But since I, personally, love coming to a section of story where I think, Gasp!  I totally didn’t expect that to happen! overcoming that challenge is one of my highest priorities.

It’s also tough to be a writer and stay out of the cookie jar.  It’s right there in the kitchen, you know?  And I’m, like, thirty feet away!  My solution has been a morning jog.  Less guilt, more cookies.  That’s how I roll.

Rewards: Wow, did you really want to talk to me all week?  Because I could go on and on!  It started with the idea that people I wasn’t actually related to would read stories I’d written.  And that remains my biggest thrill.  Seeing my name on a book, and that book on a shelf that I didn’t buy and put together myself?  Huge!  The most surprising plus has been the contact I’ve been able to have with my fans throughout the world.  They are, hands down, the most awesome people ever.  Funny.  Interesting.  Creative.  It’s been awesome to talk to them through my website or one of my other fan sites.  I deeply appreciate the fact that they’ve invested their time, money, and energy in the Jaz Parks adventures.

BBB: Do you consider your writing paranormal romance or urban fantasy and do you think it is important to distinguish between the two?

JR: I call it urban fantasy because that’s what my editor told me it was.  Up to that point, if you’d asked me, I’d have told you I was writing supernatural thrillers because, well, I had to describe it somehow!  But I’m not that big into labels.  Lots of books contain aspects of several genres.  In fact, my friends in the UK have found mine in sections of their bookstores as diverse as horror, mystery, and romance.

As far as distinguishing between paranormal romance and urban fantasy . . . in my mind, any story that takes place in today’s world but includes supernatural elements is urban fantasy.  I truly see it as a wide genre, even more inclusive than those we’ve grown up reading like mystery or horror.  I imagine Urban Fantasy as the host of a costume ball, answering the door to her immense mansion in a rather alien and beautiful outfit that we find later is her usual getup, welcoming all kinds of funky guests to her home.  Which is how you find paranormal romances comfortably rubbing shoulders with supernatural thrillers and trading back-alley stories with, as my French publishers like to call it, Bit Lit.

BBB: How did the idea for your Jaz Parks series come to you?

JR: I finally decided to write a book that I’d love to read.  I still feel guilty saying that, because somewhere in my mind I can hear my mom saying, Jennifer!  That’s so selfish!  But, you know, if you’re going to spend months and months with a manuscript, you’d better enjoy the goodies inside!  So when my husband asked me, “What would you really like to write about?” my instant response was, Vampires!  And from there the big decisions became almost clinical.  It was like question and answer period at a slightly boring news conference.

Q: What’s the best kind of conflict to write about?

A: Life or death.

Q: Who deals with life and death all the time?

A: Assassins.

Q: Could way-cool gadgets possibly be involved?

A: Count on it.

And that inner Q & A just continued until I had a solid foundation from which to build.

BBB: What is the most ridiculous thing that you have thought about doing to any of your characters?

JR: I once considered making Cole gay.  He was so pissed at me he stopped talking to me for a week.

BBB: If you had Jaz’s powers, what would you change in the world?

JR: Now, mind you, I have no idea how I’d go about doing this because I haven’t thought it out.  But I’ve developed this deep fury that’s based on news articles I’ve read and documentaries I’ve seen that depict the crap status women in many countries outside the US are forced to submit to.  I won’t go into detail because it’ll just turn into a rant.  But if I had Jaz’s powers, I’d be out there rescuing these wonderful ladies from helplessness so they would never again have to submit to domestic abuse, rape, mutilation, educational limitation, and the bigoted laws that are designed to keep them from ever even touching their potential.

BBB: How much research do you do for your books?  How much of it actually gets used in the finished book?

JR: Gosh, I’m not sure how to quantify that.  I have to know the book’s location in great detail, so hours upon hours of research go into learning the country and its history, architecture, people, even folk stories.  Starting with Bitten to Death I also began to find myself a contact person within the country who could answer questions that you can’t find in a book or video or on the Internet.  The point, of course, is to make the background so real that when the monsters come out to play, that seems real too.  And therefore scarier.  Or more exciting, depending on how I hope to make the reader react.

I also research smaller details that have to do with weaponry, clothing, even names that would be appropriate to people living in a given region.  That goes on throughout the writing and editing of the book.  So, yeah, you’re probably talking days and days of research if you lumped it all together.

Probably three-quarters of what I learn ends up in the book, but you have to understand, I’m not into writing pages and pages of scenery.  My characters fascinate me too much for me to leave them for that long.  And I prefer creating stories that make you stay up until four in the morning.  That doesn’t happen when you have to wade through an entire paragraph describing how spider webs glisten in the sun.  So much of my research is distilled.  Sometimes what you see in a sentence is an impression I was left with after reading an entire chapter about a country.

And to answer the obvious next question, the only one of my locations I have ever visited in person was Miami.  I’m hoping to change that in a couple of years.  But my daughter’s a sophomore in college and my son will start next year.  So their needs take priority right now.

BBB: How do you keep track of your world building?

JR: I have this rad 3 x 5 card file holder that looks like a miniature trunk some rock-n-roller would pack his speakers in.  That holds all my notes in reference to Jaz and Vayl’s worlds.  A lot of it I just remember, as well.  And if I ever have a question, I can also go back to a previous book (they’re all on my laptop), use the handy-dandy “Find” function, and double-check my facts.

BBB: Jaz’s grandma plays a huge role in her life.  Is she based off of anyone real in your life?

JR: Granny May is based on my Grandma Ryan.  Her name was Mary Catherine, which just didn’t ring the way I needed it to, so I used her mother’s name, which was May Tabitha.

Keep in mind that I’m a writer, so Granny May is her own gal.  Okay, my grandma did play bridge, but it was a very proper game with nice old ladies who drank diet pop and ate peanuts from little china bowls.  So you are going to see those kinds of similarities.  And I do feel, as Jaz does, that my grandma is one of the main reasons I turned out to be a decent person.  Beyond that, Granny May is much more funny and outspoken than my sweet, quiet little grandma.  She behaves with Jaz, actually, a lot more like I do with my kids.

BBB: What do you feel are the benefits of the new electronic readers such as Kindle 2 or Sony Digital Book Reader to the environment?

JR: Hey, I’m for saving trees as much as the next gal, and you can’t deny the electronic readers are leaving plenty of pines intact that might’ve fallen otherwise.  Does that offset the environmental impact of the electricity it costs to run one?  Hope so.

BBB: What impact do electronic readers create on the bottom line for authors in the end?  Do you feel they have a negative impact or positive, or no impact at all that you can see?

JR: On the first question, I’m not sure.  I think it’ll be up to us and our agents to decide how digital media affects our bottom line, and if changes need to be made in the future to protect our rights in that area, I’m sure that will happen.

Most of the readers haven’t been a problem, and their makers have worked diligently with our publishers to protect copyright, so I’ve been happy to see that direction being taken.  It’s the lack of protection offered by some manufacturers that has become a serious issue for many of us in the business.

You can get into that old argument that sharing digital books is just like sharing printed books, but it doesn’t wash.  I may lend ten of my friends a book I really liked.  But electronic media can be distributed to thousands of people instantly, only one of whom has actually bought the right to read it.  That’s a scary concept to somebody like me, who not only depends on people buying my books to keep me in business.  But who also knows that sales rankings will impact the details of my next contract—including how much I get paid and whether or not I even get one.

I’m also concerned by an attitude I’ve discovered among some computer savvy types who seem to feel that if anything appears in an electronic format, it’s free game.  In other words, they just don’t believe they should have to pay for something they can’t hold in their hands.  This is the most problematic side of the issue that I’ve come across, and one I don’t know the best way to address.  But I think it does need to be dealt with, maybe the same way we deal with stealing material goods, by parents, teachers, and religious leaders saying firmly and repeatedly from the beginning of a child’s life that downloading books you haven’t paid for is stealing, and therefore wrong.

BBB: How many more books do you have planned for the Jaz Parks series?  What other projects are you currently working on?

JR: Right now five books have been published in the series.  The sixth, Bite Marks, comes out this October 29th in both the US and the UK.  How fun is that going to be, having a release right around Halloween? Woot!  Anyway, the story takes place in and around a fictional town called Wirdilling, which sits about half an hour from Canberra, the capital of Australia.  I actually had a lot of help from native Australians, who cheerfully answered hundreds of questions about their country, because I was really worried about getting it right both for the wonderful people who live there, and for my supah cool fans from Oz.  I’m sure I’ll hear what they think either way!

Next spring the seventh Jaz Parks book, Bitten in Two, will appear in bookstores.  I’m just finishing up the final climactic scene in that adventure right now.  And I have to say, this book has been SO fun to write!  Part of it has been the location—who’s not going to enjoy writing about Marrakesh, Morocco?  The colors!  The food!  The fact that Jaz has a birthday during this book!  (Her cake is so pimp.)  Too.  Cool.

And then I’m contracted to write one more novel, which will make eight total for the series.  It will end the story arc I’ve been working on, but not the series.  I like to leave me some wiggle room!

I’m also working on a YA book which, yeah, I’d classify as an urban fantasy.  It’s called Shadowstruck.  It grew out of several questions I had rolling around in my head at once.  What really happens to kids when they disappear forever?  Why do some of them walk around with this cloud of fury rolling off their shoulders that even they can’t seem to hack through?  What would happen to a society if it lost the ability to dream?  I’m about half finished with the final draft, so I’m hoping my agent will have something to market by the end of the year.

BBB: Can you tell us about the Jaz Parks series and the general storyline that drives it?

JR: Jaz and her boss, the vampire, Vayl, are assassins for the CIA.  So, as you might expect, each book revolves around their major mission, which is to rid the world of a Big Baddie before he/she/it turns the United States into Monster Poo.

Plus.

They have kind of a thing going.  We (meaning me and my editor) like to call it a slow burn romance.  I have literally made people scream, “I want them to kiss!”  (And then made their toes curl a few chapters later!)  But I like the way their relationship develops throughout the series.  It seems more real to me than falling into the sack two days after they first meet.  And it makes sense in light of the issues you see them both dealing with.  Major, heart-rending stuff that I won’t detail here because, well, it would ruin the books.

BBB: Do you have any stray plot bunnies running around in your head and do you think something may come of them?

JR: Yes.  I have enough ideas in my head for at least six more books in the Jaz Parks series.  I don’t know if that’s good or bad, but it’s there!  As far as actual fruition for those books, I can’t predict at this point whether or not that’ll happen.  Everything depends on the readers.  I’m not sure people realize how much power they have when they buy a book to ensure that a series continues, or even expands, but I do think it’s wonderful.

I’d also like to write the book for a musical comedy which would be so brilliantly entertaining (snort!) that it would make it to Broadway.  I’ve been making notes on that for the past year, and if only I could get Mel Brooks to write it with me we’d be set!  (Hmm, maybe if Mel’s too busy I could hit up Simon Pegg.  Do you think he’s into singing and dancing cops?)

BBB: Will Jaz and Vayl’s romance be kept at a PG-13 level?

JR: Oh, man, am I hearing moans out there?  Cries of, “I wanna see Vayl naked, dammit!”  (He’s superb; does that make you feel better?)

Here’s the deal.  Part of why I write my romance the way I do is to provide an alternative to some of the hot-n-heavy stuff that, if not done well, can get old.  Because it gets in the way.  It can even crush the story.  I have read stuff where I dropped the book into my lap and said, “Holy crap, they’re screwing again?  I don’t care how long his member is anymore, what happened to the bandits?”

Another reason I don’t go graphic is because you, the reader, have a fabulous imagination.  I truly believe if I gave you details, you’d be disappointed, because your Vayl isn’t quite the same as mine.  So my job is to take you to the bedroom door and then let you go through on your own.  I think the ultimate experience is better for each individual that way.  As my friend told me the other day, “I think I’d be almost mad if you did a full sex scene.  Because I know what I think he looks like and how he acts.  And if you told me different, it’d be all wrong.”

And the third reason the short answer to your question is, “Yes,” is that my children read my books.  Someday I hope my grandkids will too.  I promised myself a long time ago I’d never write anything I’d be embarrassed for them to read.  So far it’s worked well for all of us, so I don’t believe I’ll be breaking that one any time soon.

BBB: If your series had a theme song, what would it be?

JR: “Breathe In, Breathe Out, Move On” by Jimmy Buffett (introduced to me by a fabulous fan) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xP0C5Jbmd9k

BBB: When you started writing Vayl’s character, did you know that you’d be writing one of the hottest vampires in fiction or did it just come naturally for him?

JR: I honestly had no idea.  That’s just who he is.  I think it helps to be almost 300.  You learn a lot over time.  (Ecstatic sigh.)  A lot!

BBB: If you could shapeshift, what animal would you be?  And why?

JR: I’d be an eagle, because I’ve always wanted to be able to fly, you know, under my own power.  And I love that fierce, proud look they have about them.  I appreciate a don’t-mess-with-me demeanor backed by actual power.  And, if you’ve spent any time with Vayl, you’ll have noticed why!

BBB: Our reviewer Jackie says: “One of my favorite characters in your series is Asha from Biting the Bullet.  Do you plan on bringing him back in future books?”

JR: You know, Jackie, I keep doing that to myself.  I’ll bring this fascinating character in to work with the team and then have to leave him or her behind once the story’s over.  I’ve done that again with a warlock I just adore in Bitten in Two.  At the end I’m always left sticking out my bottom lip going, Am I ever going to see you again? as they ride off into the sunset.

I’m not sure how Asha would return to Jaz’s crew, because he’s got to police that particular region until someone comes to relieve him.  I might have to just write a novel about him, and I have considered doing a couple of “spinoffs” starring one-stop characters like him, or the werewolf, Trayton, from Bitten to Death.  But I have several projects planned ahead of those, so they’re still just possibilities at the moment.

BBB: Will Cole ever find his happy ending?

JR: Yes.  (That is one thing you can pretty much count on from me.  Even if I break your heart at certain points of the story, I will always try to give you immense happiness at the end.  I figure life makes you bawl enough as it is.  Your fiction should make you smile—or even break out laughing in public so that everybody looks at you like you’re a nutcase—whenever possible.)  Anyway, I do know who Cole ends up with.  But I’m pretty sure it’s not anyone you’d expect.

BBB: The ghosts from Jaz’s Highlands adventure seemed to have one Hell of a time.  Will they have a recurring role in her adventures?

JR: At least one of them will.

BBB: Do you think you’ll ever release all the short stories you’ve written for your blog?  Or will those remain e-treats for the readers?

JR: I’m not sure.  I think that would be a great idea two or three years down the road if my agent could get a publisher interested.  Definitely we’d need to get the first eight books in the series out first though.  I will say that Orbit loves the fact that I offer my fans little stories now and then, so much so that they asked me to write one to include in the mass market release of Biting the Bullet.  How do you feel about golems?

    Jennifer,

Who was your inspiration (if you had one) for Bergman? He seems to be paranoid, a lot, about his inventions. And aside from their differences in the beginning of the series, what else prompted Bergman and Cassandra to argue a lot? Is it love or just some other things between them?

  4. Comment by Elie N — July 15, 2009 @ 9:14 am

Jennifer, I am a huge Jazz Parks fan. You are one of the first paranormal authors I read and one of my favorite. I was wondering where you came up with the idea for the cirilai? I love Bergmans inventions. you are so creative!

Jennifer — I love when one of your characters is involved in a situation that makes me laugh out loud! I get a lot of looks on the train when that happens, you can also make me cry (which is worse!). But please keep on doing what you are doing. Thanks!

    Hi Jennifer,
I found you by Digital medium. I got your first book free on Kindle and was caught. Love Jaz.
How would you advise someone who has bits of stories in their heads to proceed? How did you get started with the first story?

Hi Jennifer. Thanks for joining us here today.

Great interview — now I KNOW I must get to your series soon — they are calling to me from the tbr shelf. :)

When you are reading for fun, do you read UF, or another genre?

Great to hear that you are working on a YA idea — I am a high school librarian and can tell you that from the description, my students would love your book.

Do you ever attend fan conventions?

Hello Jennifer and thanks for chatting with us here on BittenByBooks. I really have enjoyed the first five books in the Jaz Parks series. I picked the first four up last fall, and read them in one sitting.

My questions is, Are you going to have the whole team go on another mission again?

Jennifer, Yours were the first Paranormal books that I ever read and you’ve gotten me hooked.

What I really appreciate about you as an author is the interaction you maintain with your readers on your blog. Every comment is responded too and you make it clear to us that you value our readership. So thanks for that!

    I can’t wait for October!

What is your writing process like? Do you just sit down and go or write scenes as they come? Do you listen to music while you work?

  19. Comment by MarnieColette — July 15, 2009 @ 10:13 am

Jennifer - Thanks for stopping by.

I was first introduced to you when I won a contest that gave my Another one Bites the Dust as my prize (e-book) I absolutely fell in love with Jaz, Vayl and the rest of the gang. I am on book 3 even - trying to read slowly so I don’t have as much space between the last on the new release.

I know that people have been giving you some slack about the PG-13 but I have to say it works for the stories. Sometimes I like to have it left to my imagination what goes on under the pop up tent so to speak - as long as I know something should is going on.

My question for you is simple - Is Vayl a boxer or brief kind of guy? I know he prefers to sleep in the buff.

    Anyways, my question is:

Where do you get the ideas for Cole’s T-Shirts?

This is the first time I’ve heard I’d this series. I’m really intriguid. In your interview you stated that your bedroom scenes are left to the imagination. As a reader, do you prefer to read PG over more graphic bedroom scenes?

  23. Comment by Jennifer Rardin — July 15, 2009 @ 10:18 am

Sandy, I’d say there are kernels of people I know in all my characters, though they all develop their own personalities over time. What I mean by that is that Cole has my son’s sense of humor. Jaz has my daughter’s drive. Much of Vayl’s authority and power are drawn from my husband. But none of those characters ARE my family. They’re very different types who just have something very interesting, maybe even vital, in common with them.

Jennifer, I really had no inspiration for Bergman, beyond my own fears (which are many and varied, and more easily dealt with when I can lay them on Bergman in some other form and laugh at them). Think of Bergman and Cassandra as oil and water. He’s all about what he can manipulate and create with solid materials and science. She’s a psychic. Not a happy combination, especially given his tendency not to trust anyway. How’s he supposed to protect his secrets from somebody who can just touch him and know everything?

Wow, thanks, Elie! Cirilai grew from the idea that vampires sacrifice their souls when they opt for eternal life on earth. So how did Vayl hold on to a part of his? Not on his own, for sure. And even with the ring he didn’t do so well there for a while. But I have a theory that if even one person in your life loves you unconditionally, you will always have a chance to change your path and become the person they believed you could be. His mother did that for him.

Hi Toni! Thanks! I’d like to take credit for the titles, but I’ve only done the last two. My editor and her team came up with the rest. As for casting, at this point I’d like to see what Rachelle Lefevre (Victoria in Twilight) could do with Jaz: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0498956/. As for Vayl, I’m pretty stuck on Ioan Gruffudd (Reed Richards in “Fantastic Four”). I’ve seen him really kick it in other movies–very talented actor: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0344435/.

That’s great to hear, Stephanie! Well, I did consider being a beautician. And then the veterinary route turned my head for a while. But by the age of twelve I’d pretty much made up my mind. I’m kind of an early decision maker, I guess. I met my husband when I was fifteen and knew within three months that I wanted to spend my life with him. As for inspiration to become a writer–it was just something I could do, and then something I had to do. Like breathing. Or picking off the dead flowers in my garden. Yeah, you could maybe call it a compulsion. But a healthy one, because when I’m not writing I’m not pleasant company. At all. It’s tough to pick a favorite author, because people are so good in their own ways, you know? I deeply respect the work of Stephen King, and his Gunslinger series is probably my all-time favorite right now. I think some of Michael Crichton’s stuff is pure genius. I love the work of Ursula K. LeGuin, and will buy anything that Weis & Hickman work on together (highly recommend their Deathgate Cycle). As far as Urban Fantasy authors go, you can’t go wrong with the early Laurell K. Hamilton stuff. And I really love Maggie Shayne’s books.

    I’ll do my best, Joann!

Hi Raonaid! I really wasn’t kidding about writing with Simon Pegg. I think he’d be fabulous to collaborate with. Not only have I loved his movies (though I haven’t seen his latest), I’ve seen in them the kind of humor that I think would work well with mine. I’d also love to work with a team of Disney writers. This has been a dream of mine for well over twenty years now. More often than not I find their approaches refreshing, uplifting, and fun. Which is where I like my own stories to go. My biggest literary hero is Chaucer. Which sounds all high-falutin’, I know. But it isn’t, really. He was the first to write about regular people doing regular (often raunchy) things. Yeah, he was all like, “Screw kings and queens. Maids and tinkers are a lot more interesting!” I so love that about him!

Yay! That’s great to hear, Ladytex. I know this advice might make you gag (because it did the first time I heard it in high school English) but you cannot overestimate the value of an outline. Bits of stories will only take you so far. And then you’re stuck. Sometimes to the point where you get frustrated and quit. So let your bit of story guide you into an outline that forces you to build that story’s skeleton. You probably won’t stick to it through the whole course of the writing. I never have. At some point I always have to go back and revise the outline. But it makes for much quicker writing, fewer roadblocks, and a finished product within a reasonable amount of time. Which is what we’re all shooting for, right?

Hi Carol! Thanks so much, I’m having a great time already! When I’m reading for fun I generally read sci-fi, horror, or thriller. Though I used to devour urban fantasy, I stay away from it now because I don’t want anyone else’s ideas to influence mine, even at some subconscious level. I do make an exception for YA books in the genre, though. I haven’t yet attended a fan convention, but I’m hoping to change that trend next year. Can you recommend a good one where I could meet lots of fun people?

  24. Comment by Linda AK — July 15, 2009 @ 10:19 am

    Hi Jennifer,
    Welcome, the book looks great.

My question would be: What if you couldn’t write in this genre (don’t ask me why, maybe it was banned, the horror) what would you write then?

    Welcome to Bitten By Books!

Thank you for the answer about Asha. I can understand how it would be difficult to reincorporate him when Jaz travels the world. I’m sad, but I’ll get over it. : )

When the new story arc begins, will Jaz still be the narrator or will one of the other characters step into that role?

Hey Jennifer! Here I am for the BBB interview! Still loving the Jaz books and eagerly awaiting the Bite Marks. Saw the covers for the mass mark paperbacks and thought they were pretty cool too. The added background, really nice color selections!!

Love Bergman, he’s a pretty interesting guy. Will we still get to see more of him? Like him taking part in anymore cases?

Oh gosh! Can’t think of many questions! My mind is running blank from the excitement! If money wasn’t super tight, I’d probably buy some of the mass market paperbacks, but as money is tight for me right now, I guess I’ll just stick with my trade paperbacks. Are the books still going to come out as trade first and then later mass?

Also, how many books in the Jaz series do you have planned for so far?

  30. Comment by Stephanie — July 15, 2009 @ 10:42 am

    Hi Jennerifer,

I was wondering which of your characters is your favorite?

-I RSVPd and am a member of BBB

  31. Comment by Jennifer Rardin — July 15, 2009 @ 10:50 am

Elie, an arc is a plot-line that takes more than one book to complete. A great example is Tolkein’s trilogy. Since I have a great many more books in one series, some of my plots will arc through two or three books before I tie them up and then begin another arc. (This is just my word, not necessarily one you’ll find in an official writing dictionary somewhere!)

    Okay, Elaine, here goes:
    1. Jaz & Vayl work for a shadow department within the CIA whose job it is to protect the National Security of the United States. Mostly what they do is eliminate monstrous types who, if they ever were human, have long since forgotten the best parts of what that means.
    2. Besides work, Jaz also has to deal with family issues. A twin brother who won’t speak to her. A little sister who is hugely pregnant and pissed off that she’s away when she promised to be there for the delivery. An overbearing father who was forced to retire from the Marines and hates the fact that he can’t snap out an order to any of his kids and get instant obedience anymore.
    3. Jaz is also horrified to find that she likes the way Vayl looks when he’s walking away from her. That is one amazing ass. Wait, what? How unprofessional!
    4. Jaz and Vayl have both suffered severe personal losses which I can’t detail further because it will ruin the books. But they do describe themselves, accurately, as damaged goods.
    5. Despite this they are, hands down, the two best assassins in the world. Is this a good thing? I’ll leave that up to you to decide.

Hi Rocky, and thanks! Yes, you’ll see the whole team together again in “Bite Marks,” this October.

Hi Michele, thanks so much for trying me out! If I were to write in another genre, I’d probably go for pure fantasy. And by pure, I just mean that the entire world would be of my own creation.

Aww, Jackie, now I’ve got a warm glow! Thanks! And I’m glad you feel valued, because you are.

Okay, Jenny, I think I understand the question, but if I don’t go ahead and ask me to clarify, okay? Like I said before, I have an outline. And so I write the first draft pretty much start to finish. Now occasionally I’ll have an idea how I want to beef up a scene I’ve already written, so I’ll have to rewind a couple of chapter to do that. Or I’ll need to go back and insert a scene to make what I’m currently doing make sense. So there’s a tiny bit of back and forth. But mostly it’s straight-line writing to begin with. The revisions begin that way, but I jump around a lot more. It’s like a weaving, right? Plots, subplots, even just lines of thought, all winding in and around each other. So when something changes in chapter eight, you often have to revise the continuance of that plot in chapters fifteen and twenty-three as well. (Another difference: for the YA book I mentioned, as soon as it’s finished I’ll go back about halfway and start revising from there because the first half is already almost clean enough to publish so I know I don’t need to mess with it much. So a lot depends upon how you put the story together to begin with.) Yeah, I almost always listen to my IPod while I work.

LOL, MarnieColette! Love your question! Silk boxers.

Hi Amanda! My take on paranormal events in our world is this…maybe. I think our brains are masters at fooling us. So I think a lot of what people report can be explained. And I firmly believe anyone who tries to profit from “contacting the other side” is a con. However I do believe there’s another side. Some of my literal dreams have come true. And I’d like to believe that after I’m gone I’ll be allowed to look after my kids and even their kids, at least for a while. So I’d probably call myself a hopeful skeptic.

Thanks, Becky! The ideas for Cole’s tees just kind of come to me. Glad you asked, though. I’m hoping to be able to offer at least a few of them for fans to purchase through my website by early next year.

I’m glad we’ve got you interested, Tina! Naw, I don’t really care which way an author takes me romantically speaking. I like my approach, but then everybody needs a little heavy breathing in their lives, don’t you think? Like I said, the only time I get upset is when the story itself is affected.

  32. Comment by Elie N — July 15, 2009 @ 11:06 am

So the odds are pretty good that Jazz and Vayls adventures will continue?

You mentioned a YA title, will it be hard to change gears?

Do you get to travel to any of the exotic sites your books take place in?

  33. Comment by Jennifer Rardin — July 15, 2009 @ 11:10 am

Hi Linda! As I mentioned before, I’d probably write fantasy. It’s harder to do though, lots of world-building involved which I don’t enjoy. And I think it’s also harder to connect with readers. That’s why I love urban fantasy. Pretty much everybody’s eaten at a Pizza Hut or taken a cab somewhere, so there’s common ground I don’t have to explain and we can jump into the juicy stuff that much sooner!

Yeah, Jeff, they’ll be continuing their travels. As I mentioned, “Bitten in Two” takes place in Marrakesh, and then they’ll be traveling to Romania (and places even farther beyond) in book eight. That’s been one of the big attractions of the books for me, is that they don’t all take place in the same locale. Makes for some interesting scenes. (For example, I just wrote one that took place in a morgue. But it wasn’t located in the States, so it didn’t look anything like the ones you see on all the cop shows. Imagine the research I had to do for that one. Whew! The things you learn!)

Vickie, your Grandma Violet sounds like a stellar human being. Love her already! If you mean do I have a list of the songs that I mention in my books, no, but that is a really excellent idea. I’ll keep that in mind–maybe I can pull that off after I get my glossary page organized. I usually listen to music because I’m quite easily distracted, and having earphones in, oddly, keeps me focused on the work.

Woot! Great to hear Jackie W. I’m so addicted to Facebook it’s not even funny. Hope you can see my pix for Jaz & Vayl above. I used to like Gerard Butler for Vayl but my daughter kept making gagging noises every time I mentioned his name, so apparently he’s out. (Sigh.)

Aw, Jackie U, bummer. Maybe one of these days we can bring him back somehow. Never say never! Jaz is too damn pushy to allow anyone else to narrate this series. But if I wrote an offshoot book starring, say, Asha, either he would narrate it or I’d go third-person.

Yay! Great to see you, Jessica! I like the new covers too. But then, I’m a color fiend. Gimme, gimme! Yeah, Bergman will appear in both “Bite Marks” and “Bitten in Two.” He’s changing and growing, you know, and as a result he seems to be pushing for more time with Jaz. Weird, yeah? The books will come out in trade paperback first, as always. I’m sure what the timing is on the release of the rest of the mass markets. All I know at this point is that “Another One Bites the Dust” comes out August 1 and “Biting the Bullet” releases September 1. As mentioned, I’m contracted to do eight books in the series, but I have enough main plot ideas to cover six additional books. (Wow, that sounds like a lot.)

Hi Stephanie! Jaz is my favorite. She didn’t start out that way. I really thought Vayl was going to be the one. Because, you know, hot freaking vampire (fanning myself as we speak). But, yup, gotta love the girl. She’s a survivor who hasn’t lost the ability to care. I find that special.

  34. Comment by Jennifer Rardin — July 15, 2009 @ 11:15 am

It’s hard to say, Elie. Everything truly depends on how fans react to the books within, say, the next year. But never fear, even if the stories take a break for a while, I have a new series planned which should entertain just as much as Jaz & Vayl have, although of course in quite a different way! Sometimes, yeah, I have to take a minute to think about voice. Because Jaz is very singular sounding. And so is the narrator in “Shadowstruck,” but in a much different way because he’s a 15-year-old street kid. No, I haven’t traveled to any of my book locations except for Miami (and that was before I wrote the book). I’m hoping to change that with my next series.

  35. Comment by Cheryl M — July 15, 2009 @ 11:19 am

    Hi Jennifer,
You are a new author to me. I like your titles. Do you get to choose them yourself?

  36. Comment by Brittany G. — July 15, 2009 @ 11:25 am

    Hi Jennifer!

I started reading your books about a year ago and I just absolutely love this series!

My question for you is this, what inspires you most when writing. In other words, what is your muse?

It is doing a great job whatever it is. I love the characters, story lines, and dialogue. I know I’ve told you that via Myspace, though I’m sure you get tons of messages on there. I just wanted to say again how great I think your writing is.

I just thought of a completely random question! If you were to write a new series completely different from anything you’ve written to date, what would it be?

Can’t wait to read your answers!

I’ve RSVP’ed and posted a link on my Myspace page as my current status! (www.myspace.com/brittanykgreen.com)

  37. Comment by Jennifer Rardin — July 15, 2009 @ 11:25 am

Hi Cheryl! I like them too, but I can’t take credit. I titled my first book “Club Undead,” but it was too close to a book that was already on the market, so my editor felt they needed to come up with something totally different. Thus the first five titles, which all (as you have probably noted) include some form of the word “bite” in them. I’ve done the titles for the sixth and seventh books, to my editor’s relief. So we’re good to go until we have to figure out what the heck book eight is REALLY about!

  38. Comment by Medievalgrrl — July 15, 2009 @ 11:33 am

  39. Comment by Jennifer Rardin — July 15, 2009 @ 11:33 am

Wonderful! Thanks, Brittany! This is going to sound so hokey, I know. But my husband is my muse. Here’s why. I write best when I’m relaxed. When I feel everything’s going to be okay in the long run. Now I can write all the time. I can write when I’m pretty sure the world is going to end tomorrow. But I do best in the circumstances I described above, and that’s what he creates for me every day. This sense of calm and peace and, more than anything, the knowledge that he’ll always be there.

I’ve actually already written the pitch for a new series. By that I mean I’ve detailed the plots for the trilogy, done a three-page synopsis, and written the first three chapters. Which means I can’t really give you details because my editor hasn’t even seen it. I can tell it will be an urban fantasy. It will take place in various exotic locales. You will gasp, laugh, throw your book in the air, bite your nails, and lose sleep reading to the end. But that’s where the similarity between it and the Jaz Parks series ends. I’m writing quite different characters in an entirely different situation because, I figure, that’s what you need from me next. I think it’s gonna be fun.

  40. Comment by Jennifer Rardin — July 15, 2009 @ 11:36 am

Thanks so much, Medievalgrrl, I really had fun with the questions! I think I’d use the penname I made up once, which was Diana Rose Bradley. (My middle name, Rose because I just love that name, and my husband’s middle name.)

LOL, Brittany. So true! At hand, especially in the summer (because he’s teacher) saying, “Are you done writing yet?”

Thanks so much, Kay, I really appreciate that. I’d still write about vampires, because I get pissed off when people try to ban me from something. Then I’d make copies on my hand-cranked copy machine and pass them out at writer’s versions of speak-easies. But, to make money to pay for my criminal habit, I’d probably write about zombies.

Cool deal, Mary. Yeah, I’d say about a third of my reading material is YA right now. Some terrific stuff is coming out in that field, so why not?

Hi Eimear, glad you could make it! I know, I can see you rolling on the floor as we speak. It was just a thought. Cole’s had so many girlfriends I thought, who knows, maybe he’s in deep denial or something. Turns out he just really loves women right up to the moment when he realizes they are, once again, not the happy-ending ladies for him. Jaz in her department would be funny, wouldn’t it? Remember when she had to spend, like, three weeks working there? That must’ve been an interesting time for all involved. I doubt you’ll ever see anything like that in novel form, but you might see it in one of the short stories.

I’d definitely go Historical Parody, Samk, because satire’s a little too cruel for my tastes. (And also too easy. Try it sometime. Negative is always a much easier write than positive.) Plus parody gives you a broader base for comedy which also allows for more thoughtful comment disguised as pure fun.

Hi Deana!

    Hi Jennifer,

I love the Jaz Parks Series, Jaz and Vayl are one of my favorite couples. All the character in this series are amazing they all bring something special to the books. I just finished book 5 and I wanted to know if we are going to see more Cassandra and Dave in the up coming books.

Can’t wait until Oct for the next book!

    thanks,

    Nate’

Hi, Jennifer! A close friend of mine got me hooked on your series months ago and so far I’ve read the first three books, love them!! I can’t wait to read 4th and 5th and it’s beyond cool to have a release date around Halloween! :)

  56. Comment by Jennifer Rardin — July 15, 2009 @ 12:33 pm

Hi Nate’! I’m happy to hear you’re into Jaz and Vayl! Cassandra appears in “Bite Marks” (during which time Dave is back at work doing scary Spec Ops missions for the military). I’m not sure yet who will comprise the team in book eight. I do know, however, that Dave will be home on leave at that time, so it’s entirely possible that he and Cassandra will both show for that book.

Thank you, Carol. It’s hard to know where to go as an urban fantasy author. Will I meet the majority of my fans at a romance convention? Or a Sci-Fi venue? What to do? So I appreciate your advice.

Aren’t friends who read just the best, Wendy? Yeah, I’m pretty excited about the Halloween connection. I’m hoping bookstores really play it up–I can see displays surrounded by garlands of plastic vampire teeth and offers of free jawbreakers to the first hundred buyers. Hey, it’s called “Bite Marks,” man. Go for the gusto!

    Jennifer,
Well, seeing your Disney comment, I want to know what your favorite Disney movie is. I’m a red-head, so, mine of course, is The Little Mermaid. :D (Also, Disney is coming out with a new movie this Holiday season called the Frog Princess, check it out!)
You made me drool thinking about Gerard Butler, but, what about Jeffrey Dean Morgan? He’s almost a mix of Gerard, and the Fantastic Four guy you mentioned.
My other question is what music do you listen to when you write? Your playlist on myspace is awesome, btw. :D

LOL, Samk! Neat! I am a pathetically avid Halloween buff! Gimme a chance to decorate (or better yet, throw a costume party) and you will be changed forever! The only holiday that tops it at my house is Christmas. And then, really, you probably don’t even wanna be near me until at least January 10th I’m just so, disgustingly, into the season! (Glittering trees in every room, much talk of Santa despite the fact that my kids are now 19 and 17, and yes, so much cheer I probably need to be sedated.)

Hi Lizz! I saw the preview for the Frog Princess and it looks delightful! Like most Disney buffs, I have a big collection of their movies, but the one I’ll always go back to is Mary Poppins. You know, Jeffrey Dean Morgan does have the right body type for Vayl, and the right coloring, so I’d totally consider him–if he could pull off that slight accent I imagine Vayl has that always gets a little more pronounced when he’s feeling some strong emotion. My IPod mix is pretty eclectic. I listen to artists ranging from the Foo Fighters to Rockapella to Jim Croce. Here are the first ten songs on my Shuffle list:

    1. “When a Man Loves a Woman,” by Percy Sledge
    2. “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling,” by The Righteous Brothers
    3. “Sweet Emotion,” by Aerosmith
    4. “Bright Lights,” by Matchbox Twenty
    5. “Thank Goodness,” from the musical “Wicked” sung by Kristin Chenowith and others
    6. “American Pie,” by Don McLean
    7. “Tin Man,” by America
    8. “The Flame,” by Cheap Trick
    9. “Straight from the Heart,” by Bryan Adams
    10. “We Don’t Need Another Hero,” by Tina Turner

Yeah, Lythande, I think the Jaz Parks adventures would make movies to rival the James Bond flicks. We did have a couple of nibbles from producers when the series was first released, but nothing since. Keep your fingers crossed!!

Hi Elaine, and thanks a lot! I’m having a great time today. Such thoughtful questions! Thank you all for spending time with me!

You made it, Carly! All right! You know, you guys are the reason Jaz moves and breathes in a place beyond my office, and I want you always to know how much I appreciate that.

Well, Bea, it’s much more structured during the school year when my guys are away for much of the day. Then I write from about nine a.m. to three or four p.m. with about an hour around noon for lunch. During the summer all that falls apart because we’re always taking day trips or doing projects around the house. Then it simply becomes about word-count and I just get in the time whenever a window appears. As long as I get to 2,000 for the day I’m happy. Yesterday I did 3,400 so I was ecstatic.

    Thanks for the links, Lizz!

LOL, Carmen! If you’re anything like my friends, you probably have twenty books sitting by your bed waiting to be read and fifty more on your tbr list! Thanks so much for adding mine!

Hi Jennifer! I bought the first two Jaz Parks books because the ladies at Smart Bitches Who Read Trashy Books were raving about them, and so far I’ve really enjoyed them. I know you said you don’t read as much urban fantasy these days because you’re worried about it influencing your work, but I was wondering if you had noticed any upcoming trends in urban fantasy—for example, demons seem kind of hot right now. I’m always interested in learning how authors do their research—any tips on how to “distill” your research, as you put it, so you don’t end up writing an “info-dump”?
I RSVPed to the event, and have become Jennifer’s fan on facebook. Thanks!

  76. Comment by Jennifer Rardin — July 15, 2009 @ 1:50 pm

Do you think he could pull it off, Jackie? Or do we need a European dude in the part?

No offers so far, Estefanie, although the manuscript is in the hands of my agency’s movie guy. Who seems to think there are already too many vampire flicks out there. Sigh. These are the obstacles you come up against when someone doesn’t really “get” what you’re writing about. However I have high hopes that some rabid vampire fan with oodles of dough will fall in love with Jaz and demand to see her in his custom-built cinema sooner rather than later! (Bruce Willis? I hear you’re building an airport. Dude. Jaz flies to all her missions. You could be the pilot…)

Hi Kimberly! Those Smart Bitches are, like, my heroes. As for what’s hot–I don’t pay any attention to that. As my editor says, by the time you write about what’s hot now, it’s already cliche. What you want to do is something you’re not seeing at all. Something you wish you could see as you’re reading everybody else’s stuff. As for distilling research, I’m not sure how to teach this in a minute, but here’s what I do. Read the research, take notes, print off (or buy the book of) whatever you think you’ll need to refer to later. And then, when you come to the scene where that information is pertinent, sit back and BE IN IT, with all your senses. And instead of describing everything, maybe go for a single detail, like a doorway, and use it to bring in the rest of the information you need, which could include the fact that the city is ancient, or that the neighborhood is a ghetto, or whatever. I hope that made sense. If it didn’t, let me know where you were confused and I’ll try to explain some more.

Believe me, Jen. If I had that kind of money, I would sure as heck use it to make this series into either a tv show and/or big screen movie. But until then, I am satisfied in knowing that I got this amazing series I just absolutely love to read.

    Thanks, Jen

  81. Comment by Jennifer Rardin — July 15, 2009 @ 2:17 pm

My pleasure, Eloise!! I was a voracious reader as a kid. In fact, by the time I was about fourteen I’d pretty much made my way through all the books that interested me in my (small) town’s library. (Typically I would be reading three to four books at the same time. I’d just leave them in different parts of the house and, depending on where I landed at any given time, that’s the one I’d pick up.) As you might expect, my tastes leaned toward the supernatural. I started out with fairy tales, devoured everything I could find by the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, as well as the Arabian Nights stories. From there I moved on to the god myths, Norse, Roman, Greek, whatever I could get my hands on. I discovered Narnia in the fifth grade, 221b Baker Street in sixth grade, and Middle Earth in junior high. After that it was everything Stephen King had ever written. Non-fiction wasn’t off limits though. I might get curious about something and read whatever my library could provide. So for a couple of weeks I researched venomous snakes. Another time I became fascinated with people who had died and then been brought back to life, so I read a couple of books detailing their first-hand accounts of their experiences. Then for a while I was into old movie stars, so I read a series of biographies, the only one of which I remember is Lauren Bacall’s. So, yeah, I have a ton of trivia crowding out the really important information that should have priority in my mind. If I forget my name tomorrow, you will remind me, right? (I’ll check out that song. Thanks for letting me know about it!)

  82. Comment by Jennifer Rardin — July 15, 2009 @ 2:23 pm

    Hey Jennifer,
I love your comment about fiction making you smile or crack up like a nutcase. I also glad Cole will get his own happy ending. I love that we get some more Jaz and Vayl romance as the series goes along.
I was wondering how you think up Bergman’s gadgets. Not really their purpose, but more their design. Also, did you base Cirilai off a ring you saw, or is it all in your head? And, how do you think of Granny May’s bridge partner combinations?

  84. Comment by Jennifer Rardin — July 15, 2009 @ 2:58 pm

Hey Ashleigh! It depends on the gadget. But usually my thought process is something like, “What would deliver the intended result but look cool–or funny–or totally out of place, in the process?” depending on what kind of reaction I’m looking for from the reader. Because, of course, Bergman thinks everything he makes is amazingly sleek and sexy. Even when everybody else who looks at it goes, “What the hell?”

Cirilai is the ring I wish my husband would buy (or more likely have made for) me. I’ve never seen it anywhere, so I’m sure it doesn’t exist, but I’ve imagined it so much in my head it seems real to me now.

Granny May’s partners/opponents are always the funniest combinations I can come up with at the moment. I always want that foursome to be a group who, if I walked through a door and saw them playing cards, I would close the door again and fall into gales of laughter. (I also imagine the conversations at the table must be incredibly interesting, but I never quite hear what they’re saying. Maybe someday…)

Yay! I’m glad you enjoyed it! Well, zanheltgania, I do keep a printout of the outline (which gains lots of handwritten notes as the book grows) with my laptop all the time. I also maintain a file folder for each book which contains research notes, pictures, and copies of e-mails I’ve received from my contacts “on the ground” that answer vital questions like, “What’s the most popular magazine in your country right now?” and “What’s playing on TV in your country between, say, two and five in the morning?” For “Bitten in Two” I bought a travel guide to Morocco, just as if I was going to visit Marrakesh myself. That sits on my desk. And facts I keep coming back to (like what time the sun sets) as well as ideas for revisions of the second draft get typed right into the first draft–at the very top of the title page just before you would read “Chapter One”. They’re impossible to miss that way!

    Hi Jennifer, great interview.
I’ve friended and fanpaged on facebooks, and also added BBB to my blog page (www.elove-madramble.blogspot.com)
I was wondering if you automatically went for vamps as a child, or did your reading start elsewhere?
    Thanks!

Love the comment about the close proximity to the cookie jar. I know for me I can hear chocolate calling in the next room. Great interview! Very funny & informative.

Great interview! Love it when a book is a sexy romance but the sex is left to the reader’s imagination. It can be done and you’ve proven it. Thanks for that.

Questions: Why do you think so many authors of adult fiction are turning out YA books? How are the challenges of writing YA fiction different?

    (RSVP’d…Shirley H)

Hi Heather! Naw, you’re not late, we’re just getting warmed up here! My favorite vamp, besides Vayl, has gotta be Spike with Angel come in a close second (after he got his own series). Just loved those dudes! As far as baddies go, though, the hands-down winner is Deacon Frost from the Blade movie: http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0003483/. Wowsa.

True, zanheltangia, which shows you how often I write on the road I guess. I suppose everybody develops his/her own system depending in individual habits.

Ya tease! No, no, don’t let me loose on your coworkers, Samk. I’m fearfully hard to stop when I’m popping finger-sized Snicker Bars and trying to figure out how high I can possibly hang my flying witch from the light pole!

Hi Diane! Hmm, I suppose I could say “You’ll laugh until you snort Rootbeer out your nose,” but some people find that off-putting, especially when they only drink tea. I think these characters are people you’ll fall in love with quickly, feel like you’ve known for ages, and cheer for repeatedly to get it right, even when they go terribly wrong. Which they often do because, you know, they’re only human. Kind of.

Now Rocky, that one seems easily doable to me. Maybe I’ll actually manage two big cons next year. Wouldn’t that be great? (So glad you enjoyed Albert. He was a lot of fun to write. And, btw, nothing like my own dad. Much.)

My pleasure, Elie. Everyone who deals with me through my site or other fan-based contacts has been great, and it’s important to me to keep those areas very positive in nature for all involved. I figure when we meet we should all be having fun. As far as people who comment on their own blogs about my books or reviews, I never read them. Because I have a way of interpreting even the glowing remarks negatively. And then it drives me a little crazy, which affects my writing. So I realized pretty quickly, that while reviews are important to my publicists, and that other readers often depend on them to decide whether or not to buy a book, they could never be in my radar. My focus always has to be about story, making it the best I possibly can so that when it does get into you (the reader’s) hands I know I’ve given you my best shot. Because no matter what anyone else says, your happy smile when you read THE END is what really matters.

Yeah, Ashley, I’m afraid that’s stopped a lot of people and that makes me sad, because everyone should have access to owning these stories. (I’m not just blowing here, either. For ten years I was a stay-at-home mom, taking care of two little ones and writing for, basically, hobby money. So I know how precious a book budget can be.) Luckily “Once Bitten” is out in mass market right now and the next two books are coming quickly after, so hopefully many more people will be able to begin their Jaz collections.

    Thanks, Dina!

Wow, what a thought-provoking question, Samk. If this turns into an actual project I’m going to have to remember you in the Acknowledgements section. You know, we’ve been talking a lot at our house lately about the amazing accomplishments units comprised of black soldiers made during the Civil War which were, of course, largely ignored. So I think I’d pick that time and one of those groups of brave men. Remember we’d be doing parody, so imagine a comic twist to a tragic time that would manage to show both the rampant bigotry on both sides of the lines, and the lifelong ties that developed between white and black men despite it.

Well, Liz, I mentioned Rachelle Lefevre (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0498956/) as my pick before, but that was with a different actor as Vayl. I don’t think she’d necessarily work with Gerard Butler. What do you think of Danneel Harris? http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1566486/

Yes, Becky, as mentioned above: “I’m also working on a YA book which, yeah, I’d classify as an urban fantasy. I’m about half finished with the final draft, so I’m hoping my agent will have something to market by the end of the year.”

You’ve made it in plenty of time, Vale. Great to see you here! I actually thought of Vayl first. He was going to be the big star of the show. Jaz was just the peon. You know, “Carry my bags. Be the person I talk to so I’m not standing around spouting important phrases into thin air like some kind of loon. And maybe we’ll develop a relationship later on if you suit me,” kind of girl for him. Except she refused to take that role. I kept hearing her in my head while I was trying to write scene’s from Vayl’s point of view, saying droll, sarcastic, smartass things that often made me want to laugh out loud. And I finally admitted to myself that this girl was not only the real deal, her story needed to be told, and it could only be done in that voice I’d been hearing for months already. Which became a good lesson for me in the end. You can force a story, but it’ll just end up as crap. If you let it move itself, you may end up with something amazing.

Hi Beverly, thanks so much for the kind welcome! Probably the most daunting aspect of writing is the massive amount of time spent alone. I’m talking, you know, by yourself. We don’t even have any pets so, really, really alone. Which is what, I think, leads to excellent work. But which can be very hard on the psyche. So it’s important to balance that with family time. Nights out with girlfriends. Actual socializing so you don’t forget how to say things like, “Oh my gosh, what a great outfit! You look just like Angelina Jolie!”

Okay, let me know if I understood you wrong, but you’re wondering about the top ten things I can and cannot live without that don’t pertain to writing. So here they are in no certain order:

    Can Live Without:

    1. Dusting
    2. Cooking
    3. TV
    4. Phone
    5. Shopping
    6. Curling Iron
    7. Making the bed
    8. High heels

    Cannot Do Without:

    3. Books
    4. Internet
    5. Travel
    6. Friends

    Hello Jennifer,

I wanted to tell you that I think you are hilarious! My question is along that same vein, so to speak. How do you make sure what is funny in everyday life translates as funny in your books. I love to laugh! I have a funny family and down right psychotically funny friends. When I write and attempt to be funny it falls flat. What am I missing?

  113. Comment by Jennifer Rardin — July 15, 2009 @ 7:35 pm

Hi Emily, thanks! No, vamps scared me too much as a kid. Because back then they were bad, scary monsters. Period. So I started with stories I could read at night without quaking under the covers until I, maybe, fell asleep an hour later. I didn’t even read Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” until I was in high school. And by then I’d already been through King’s “Salem’s Lot,” and figured if vamps ever hit my town we were all pretty much screwed! (Um, I still can’t watch a scary movie right before I go to bed without risking nightmares my husband has to wake me from. It’s like they latch right into my subconscious and breed!)

Yeah, what is the deal with that, Krysten? Someday scientists will find an actual provable explanation for it. I mean, beyond that fact that it’s luscious and, therefore, impossible to resist!

I have three words to say in answer to your first question, Shirley: “Twilight” & “Harry Potter.” Young adults have proven their interest in urban fantasy by buying in record numbers. And when they’re done with those two series’ what are they gonna do–just stop? Nope. They’re going to look for the next neat story, because they have now discovered a genre they love. Which is why authors like those you’ve mentioned are stepping in to offer them new choices. (This is just my theory, based on personal observation of the business. I could be dead wrong. But I don’t think I am.) You’d be surprised how similar YA fiction is to adult fiction. Your characters can even swear (which makes me squirm, but that’s because I’m kind of a prude when it comes to what I say to kids). My take as an author is that you need to streamline the plot for YA. So there’s not nearly as much jumping from plot A to subplot B to subplot C back to plot A. Imagine an adult novel as a checkerboard during game play. Whereas a YA novel is more like a 5K run. Also, of course, no graphic sex and the violence would be less gory.

Yikes, annalisa, that’s a hard one. I try to make each book better than the last. Which should automatically mean that my newest one is my favorite. I find I’m having the most joy in writing “Bitten in Two” than I ever had with any of the others. But so far, “One More Bite” is probably my favorite. I’m sure you can guess why.

Hi Terri! Sometimes I think I’ve turned her off. For instance, after I finish the first draft of “Bitten in Two,” I’ll leave it alone for two weeks. And I won’t consciously think about it. But some part of my brain is stewing over it, even then. Occasionally a thought will pop up, an idea I’ll have to run and write down before I forget it. Then I’ll settle back to stew some more. So, no, I don’t think I ever really stop. This is not a good thing because often I’ll find I’m riding with my husband in the van and I’ve drifted off into story and begun fabricating something in my head–maybe it doesn’t even have anything to do with Jaz–I’m just making crap up because that’s how I’m wired. So I have to tell myself, “Be here, in this moment, because it’s not coming again.” One of the hazards of the trade, I guess.

  114. Comment by Jennifer Rardin — July 15, 2009 @ 7:49 pm

LOL, Nancy. I’m imagining you scaling this teetering pile of books, gasping, “I just have to get that one on the summit. I heard it’s a page-turner!” No, I don’t currently have a must-read author. It used to be Laurell K. Hamilton, but Anita Blake just stopped appealing to me after a while. And Michael Crichton died, so I have nothing to look forward to from his wonderful mind anymore. I guess the upside is that the world is full of creative genius just waiting to be discovered. And it won’t be long until I find someone else whose work I just can’t put down.

Hi Rebecca, thanks! I spend between five and six hours a day writing. My contracts allow me seven to eight months to finish a manuscript, which gives me time to finish the first draft and then fully revise it at least twice before I send it in. (However, I think I should add that between the number of times I revised it before it was sold and the number of times my editor sent it back with suggestions, “Once Bitten” was probably revised about twenty times before it was published.)

Wow, Shon, thanks! The key, I’ve found, is to make sure at least one of your characters finds whatever is happening as hilarious as you do. Because then you give the reader permission to laugh. And remember, people don’t laugh when they know what’s coming. Half of the giggle is in reaction to the surprise.

I RSVP’d abut didn’t make it till now! Hi Jennifer!
Just became a fan on goodreads: (you’re a fan of Jennifer Rardin!)
requested you as a friend on FB
I must admit, I have wanted to read your Jaz Parks books for some time, but I never never gotten around to it. (I know, shame on me!) but you are definitely on my TBR list! aslo posting the link to this interview on my FB profile.
Now I am sure it has been asked, but how did you come up with the name for Jaz? Did you already choose the name before you started writing the series? or did you have a few names you were picking from? Thanks!

  117. Comment by Jennifer Rardin — July 15, 2009 @ 8:19 pm

That’s great to hear, Jo-Anne! Vayl developed very quickly, pretty much as soon as I realized I was finally going to let myself write a story about vampires. Jaz had been hanging around my head a lot longer. I wrote three unpublished (translation=bad) novels before “Once Bitten,” and I think shades of her character appeared in all the female protagonists of those books. So, if we’re going to get literal, she’d been growing in my head since I was about twenty-five. (For those of you who, like me, shun math–that’s fifteen years.) Damn. I hope this next character I’m developing doesn’t take that long to become so cool!

I just realized I’ve missed replying to a couple of posts/questions. Hey, I’m trying to ignore anyone, so if you didn’t get a response from me, shout it out, okay? I want to make sure everybody gets to play!

Anyway, Kainani, I’m currently reading two books (VERY slowly, because most of my spare time goes to writing). I’m about three-fourths of the way through Philip Pullman’s book, “His Dark Materials: Amber Spyglass.” And I just started the second book in Kelley Armstrong’s “Darkest Powers” series, which is called, “The Awakening.”

And in answer to your last question, Heather C., two of the vamps in “Bitten to Death” are gay and have been a couple for nearly as long as Vayl has known them. That would be Niall and Admes. I’m also introducing a character in “Bitten in Two,” who’s very open about who his partners are.

Um, that would be I’m NOT trying to ignore anyone. Geez. I think it’s time to kick in the caffeine!

Hi Lisa, great to talk to you! No, no, that’s cool. I understand there are only, what, a few billion books out there for you to choose from? Just glad you’ve got my series on your list. Jaz’s name grew mainly out of practical need. I didn’t want readers to have to struggle every time they came across her name which would be, OMG, hundreds of times before I was done. So it had to be simple, but not boring. It also had to convey a specific message about the character. Strength. Originality. Mystery. I think her name, and Vayl’s, did all three.

Hi again!!! Very cool about the gay characters. One thing I love about urban fantasy, is that its based in the somewhat real world…so it should reflect real relationships and kinds of people in addition to vamps, weres, etc. We just need to see more lesbians floating around. They seem to get left out.

i thought you had actually been to all of the places you’ve written about in you books! do you have like a top 5 of places that you would one day like to visit, and have the places you’ve written about influenced your destinations in anyway?

  127. Comment by Jennifer Rardin — July 15, 2009 @ 8:48 pm

    Hi Zarifina, thanks!

    1) Nowadays the action that occurs in one book pretty much inspires what will happen in the next one. But when I start out, with my new series for instance, I really want to address important issues that I think we, as a human family, need to deal with. But, of course, I have to tweak them in such a way that they fit into a world where humans coexist with fairies and many of the rules that govern our way of living have never been considered in their realm. So while I’m talking about prejudice, genocide, abuse, self-hate, family issues, it all gets filtered through a different when and where that is easier to deal with and, often, laugh at than if I presented everything in a real-world scenario. That’s just the inspiration, yeah? But you can’t write a good story if you dwell in those clouds for very long. In the end it all has to get hammered down, written out, detailed to the last comma and question mark. So I understand most of my lofty goals probably get cut away for the sake of brevity, or clarity, or even a great laugh. That’s okay. In the end, I’m just left hoping every reader gets some kind of lift from one of my books. Even if it’s just a sigh of relief that they’ve escaped from their stressful lives for a few hours. That’s enough.

    2) I write about the paranormal because I live in the normal. Writing about it would be like repeating myself. And I don’t even like going to the same restaurant twice. So, you know, booooring. The paranormal offers endless, enchanting possibilities. I just can’t resist that. Probably never will.

  128. Comment by Jennifer Rardin — July 15, 2009 @ 8:55 pm

LOL, Heather. Didn’t realize corn had a certain, unique smell about it, did you? See, now you’ve identified a gap in urban fantasy that somebody needs to fill. Where’s our newest lesbian protagonist? Can’t wait to meetcha, lady!

LOL, blackroze! I made that Can Live Without list too housework heavy, didn’t I? Hubby does help, it’s just that I hate it that much!

    Thank you, Tamara!

Yes, Jo-Anne, I badly want to visit every place I’ve written about now. Top five dream destinations:
    1. Ireland
    2. Scotland
    3. Italy
    4. Australia

Hey Jennifer! I’ve had a blast reading through your Q&A and all the comments. I really don’t have any questions for you right now since you already kindly answered them for me.

I must say that you are by far my most favorite author and I’m really looking forward to your next Jaz mini mission and your next book Bite Marks in October.

Also I was thinking that I wouldn’t have anything to read for a while but one of the books that you are reading right now sounds interesting so I think I will probably make a pit stop at the book store tomorrow.

Thanks so much for having a great imagination!

    Sarah Brackett

    *RSVP’d
    *Already Facebook with Jennifer
*I have also bought 2.5 sets of books (couldn’t find the receipts go figure)

  134. Comment by Jennifer Rardin — July 15, 2009 @ 11:24 pm

Hi Lesley! What surprised me the most was the pace at which books moved from manuscript to final product, which was slooooow. I also didn’t realize how much editing went on between each step of that process. But I appreciate every chance I get to make the book better, so I’m not complaining!

Hi Sweetsummer! What usually inspires the gadgets is me saying, “Well, sure, a regular old machine could do the trick here. But we have Bergman, who would naturally want to . . .” and the item just kind of grows from there.

Hello there, Summer Ivy! Thanks so much! Hmmm, well, yeah. Probably my favorite part is the scene between Jaz and Albert at the bed & breakfast when she finally tells him what was really going on at home while he was gone and how he reacts to that. Yeah, sometimes if the name of a minor character is translated for me as I’m researching it, I’ll choose it specifically because of what it means. But for my main characters, no, I didn’t worry about that. Yes, I’ve written three unpublished books. And it’s probably best if we leave it that way. I’d say the series is mainly character driven, because who they are and why they choose their paths is of major importance. But plot is key, and I work very hard to make sure the two work in tandem as much as possible.

Hi there iokijo! Jaz is short for Jasmine. Vayl is pretty much the only one who calls her by her full name. Also her dad when he’s mad at her. When her family is feeling extra loving, they call her Jazzy. Vayl is pronounced with a long “a.” As in “the truth is veiled.”

That’s cool, Sarah. Tune into my website tomorrow if you want to get in on part one of the new short story. I’m writing it in celebration of the August 1 release of “Another One Bites the Dust.” Nope, it’s not a mini-mission. This one is about Granny May–way before she was a grandma. Or even thinking about motherhood. Should be fun!

    Jennifer,

I really don’t know if this is legal but I just really have to thank you for answering my questions. I really appreciate it.
And your favorite scene, between Jaz and Albert at the bed & breakfast is my favorite too! (plus the scene with flip repartees between Jaz & Vayl…)
My husband thought I was insane because that very scene made me weep in Book 5! But I really, REALLY loved it. I just wish things like that happen in real life, no? LoL
Another author told me that her unpublished books are the most personal ones she has written, which I believe is so cool. There’s always this one thing that you keep. Something that no one else will ever discover. =^.^=

    Again, lemme thank you.

    Stay Cool! =)

I posted my question before but I think you missed it because it had to many links on it and took a while to come up so I thought I’d post it again.. :\ LOL :D

Question was: “Jennifer, you said that you considered making Cole gay, so I was wondering if were to turn any other character gay (just for sh*ts & giggles) who would it be and why? :D”

    (: Love your books.

  138. Comment by Jennifer Rardin — July 16, 2009 @ 12:14 am

Here’s all I can tell you, stacey: I’ve actually already written the pitch for a new series.

I think you’re okay to comment as much as you like, Summer. Chatting’s no fun if we can’t have at least a little back-and-forth. Yeah, real life would be a lot more satisfying if, just once, we could squeeze a scene like that from our uncooperative relatives. This is true, about the personal stuff as well. That’s why it’s hard to let a book go when it’s done, and harder still to read reviews, because you’ve left a little part of your soul in there. However, I believe that’s what it takes to make any work worthy of public consumption.

  139. Comment by Jennifer Rardin — July 16, 2009 @ 12:16 am

I’m sorry I missed it before, Taylor. I might consider taking Bergman that direction, just because he’s so clueless about who he is and what he wants beyond the workplace. But I’m pretty sure, deep down, he’s straight.

  140. Comment by Taylor B — July 16, 2009 @ 12:38 am

HI JENNIFER - i know it’s late but i did rsvp so thought i’d show up. had problems with my ISP for the last 8 hrs! this interview event looks to be a great success! YAY for us - and you too.

My question is: in an interview last year, you mentioned you were developing other projects. how’s that coming along?

now for the standard stuff: RSVP’d, FB friend, BBB and JR newsletters, asked a Q, and going to B&N to get another book.

about the book buying thing - i generally don’t buy books as i’m a big believer in using the library AND all that environment stuff (no new purchases and reuse repurpose reclaim). BUT i love your books so much i had to own them so i could keep re-reading them. :-)

KEEP ON WRITING!! You ARE the bees knees.

    Oh, one more Q:

Vayl retains his soul. I remember that from book 1. I seem to also recall he has a heartbeat? Is that right? How?

Sorry if this has already been asked.

    3. Jennifer - you know we all want to see Vayl naked - did you have any particular inspiration for that body - any other naked bodies we should be looking at to work out exactly how he should look like? lol

I love to find an author that writes a paranormal romance that is in a series. I frequently get books from a swap sites as this is often the only way to get a copy of a book that were published early in the series. I realize that you only see royalties from the original purchase but don’t you think that this in turn steers readers to purchase newer books written by you? What are your feelings about book swapping sites?

  146. Comment by Vale — July 16, 2009 @ 6:14 am

Lol!!! Yes, that looks like tipically Jaz behaviour. :-) I can imagine her following you around in your head and shouting to you the whole time, until you’re forced not only to pay full attention to her, but also to admit she’s right - at which point she’d think “heh! told ya”. lol

  149. Comment by Jennifer Rardin — July 16, 2009 @ 8:07 am

Hi rox! Great to see you here! Yes, Vayl has a heartbeat. In my world, when vampires rise, whatever power that revives them, the “Un” in undead also revitalizes their organs so that they can continue to nourish the body the vamps use.

Lisa, I seriously doubt book swapping sites are the only places people can get early books from a series. Unless a book has gone completely out of print, bookstores can always order them for you, (Amazon’s pretty great about carrying early stuff as well) and even then they can often get a copy from the publisher’s warehouse. I know this is a much cheaper way to read, but in the long run it hurts authors, because it affects our paychecks and the terms of our next contract. Basically, if you like a series and want it to continue, the only way to let a publisher know that is to buy a book new. Because the only way they have to track whether or not readers care about that series is through those sales numbers.

    Exactly, Vale!

    Thanks, Elyane.

Thanks so much, Dawn. I hope you enjoy the rest!

  155. Comment by Jennifer Rardin — July 16, 2009 @ 12:43 pm

Hi Jen! It’s tough to pick, but I think I can narrow it down to one my grandma gave me that had been hers as a kid (and she was born in 1911 so you can imagine how carefully I had to treat it). It was “Tarzan of the Apes” by Edgar Rice Burroughs, a hardback copy printed in the twenties, which I still have, though many of the pages have kissed the binding goodbye now. I read that book front-to-back so many times I had whole parts of it memorized. She also gave me several others in the series that she had, as well as several books from the “John Carter of Mars” series. Absolutely enchanting.

  156. Comment by Jackie U — July 16, 2009 @ 12:44 pm

Sorry about the late response!! I think someone more European needs to play Vayl, honestly. Yes, Jeffrey Dean Morgan has an adorable accent (in P.S. I Love You at least) and makes me hotter than a damn sauna, but I see someone a little less bulky.

    Hi Jennifer! Welcome to BBB.

Sorry I couldn’t make it sooner. I haven’t gotten into your books yet though I hear nothing but great things about them. I do applaud your reason to keep your books (the sex part at least) at PG-13 level. Sex is pretty much everywhere nowadays. But with you that means your books have more story to it than not and that really makes me curious about your books.

    Anyway for a random question,

What would you do if you couldn’t be a writer? It could be ANYTHING. Though another author did already claim assassin and another one got dibs on lion-tamer. *^_^*

That’s great though, right Dianne? So you always have something to look forward to.

Hi Seri! A lot of times procrastination is a sign that I’m not happy with the story. So the first step is to make sure I’m positive, deep down, that the plot is still moving in the right direction. This has been happening to me the past few days, in fact, leading up to the last climactic scene of “Bitten in Two.” Turns out I didn’t want to write it as planned because it wasn’t supposed to turn out that way. After putting it off a couple of days, I realized exactly how I needed it to work. But, the way I did that was to write everything else I could leading up to it. So, as for the other type of procrastinating, I’m afraid it comes down to being your own strict taskmaster. I try to be extremely disciplined about when I get up in the morning. What my daily routine involves and when I go to bed at night so that I have optimum writing time. And then, of course, it’s all about butt in chair. (Which-by the way-is on a different floor of the house than the Internet and the TV for obvious reasons.)

    That’s wonderful news, Eva, thanks!

Hi Lyda! My second choice career-wise would be horticulturist. Can’t even begin to tell you how happy gardening makes me. But it’s probably one major reason I don’t need professional therapy.

  165. Comment by Jennifer Rardin — July 16, 2009 @ 8:25 pm

Hi Bookspot! Hmmm, I suppose the vamp with the least to learn from Vayl about hotness would have to be Dracula as depicted in “Dracula 2000.” As for the one with the most to learn from Vayl? How about the same dude in Nosferatu? (http://www.nosferatumovie.com/vampires.html) Yuck.

  166. Comment by Patricia Barraclough — July 16, 2009 @ 10:18 pm

Hi. Very interesting interview. I found the PG-13 comments interesting. I like the way you think. I too have thrown my hands up when reading a book and thought “Can we just get on with the story already and forget the detailed sex.” It really gets in the way sometimes. We all have pretty good imaginations, let us use them. I was going to ask about your YA book being “safe” to put on the shelves of the library where I work. If your adult books are PG-13, I shouldn’t have to worry about the YA books. It is hard to put out books for the older teens because I have 4th graders in the YA room checking out books they are way too young for. When do you think the YA book might be ready? I’ll be checking out your books. They sound interesting.

    I RSVP’d.

I ordered something from Cafe Press by the BBB link and emailed the receipt.

Jennifer, why did you decide to write in this genre - was it a conscious choice or was it just how the story came to you?

    What’s your favorite musical? :)

  170. Comment by Jennifer Rardin — July 18, 2009 @ 7:34 pm

Thanks, Patricia! Yeah, you can feel pretty safe about the YA book, although there will be some mild swearing and thriller-type violence. I’d actually give it a PG-13 as well (except the ‘romance’ stays wayyyy tame).

Hi Liza, thanks so much! Yes, each books is designed to stand alone. In other words, I may refer to action that has happened earlier, but all the history is explained well enough in each book that you can start anywhere. Having said that, I’d still suggest you start at the beginning just for the joy of following Jaz & Vayl’s growing relationship as the stories progress.

Hi Margay! I’d just finished a big project and it was time to write another book. So I was discussing my options with my husband (while at the same time bemoaning the fact that I was approaching forty and still hadn’t been published). And he basically said, “Why don’t you quit worrying about all that and just write about what you love?” (Have I mentioned that he’s extremely wise?) So I chose this genre because I love it and my husband finally convinced me to follow my heart.

Hi emily! My favorite musical is Avenue Q.

  171. Comment by seraphina — July 20, 2009 @ 4:17 pm

what do you think of writing contests? is it s legitimate way to break into the biz?

  172. Comment by Jennifer Rardin — July 21, 2009 @ 2:43 pm

Hi seraphina. Well, a friend of mine over at the League of Reluctant Adults broke in that way, so no way am I going to dis them. However, I’d like to suggest that your chances are much higher if you go the find-an-agent route as well. And, of course, you need to make sure the contest is legit to begin with.
