Guest Blog, Chat and Contest with Author Candace Havens

Candace Havens is traveling, though she has promised to stop to check in today. She asked her friend Jake, one of the stars of the new release Dragons Prefer Blondes. We thought a little Q&A was in order, since we seldom get a chance to chat with a man who dates a dragon slayer. I will tell you it’s not exactly easy to speak in his presence, the man his one handsome hawtie!

Here’s a little blurb about the book:
Alex Caruthers is a sassy socialite who knows when it’s time to turn in her dancing shoes and kick some serious dragon booty. But when Ginjin—the dragon warrior who’s tried to kill her numerous times—chooses her as his mate, Alex finds herself in a situation that’s too hot to handle.

For help she turns to Jake, head of Caruthers security—and a total hottie in a suit—and asks him to pose as her boyfriend. Their relationship might be fake, but Alex can’t deny that one touch from Jake makes her burn hotter than any dragon could.

Here we go…

Q: Jake, we really appreciate you stopping by today can you tell us about your job with Caruthers’ Corp.?

A: I’m happy to be here. Let’s see, I’m head of Caruthers’ security. I’m responsible for coordinating teams to protect the Caruthers’ business enterprises, and also for the protection of the sisters Gillian, Alex, Mira Claire, and their brother Bailey.

Q: Wow! That’s a lot of responsibility. What did you do before joining the company?

A: I can’t go into detail, but I worked with some other law enforcement agencies. Both of which would cause me bodily harm if I discussed what I did with them.

Q: Okay, then. Is it true that you are dating the dragon slaying Alex Caruthers?

A: Silence.

Q: Um, would it help if I told you that both Candace and Alex said it was okay if you shared a few details?

A: Again, silence.

Q: Moving on. What is it like having to protect someone who must protect Earth from dragons?

A: Tiring. I worry about Alex constantly. She’s always getting into trouble with those beasts and she never thinks before she speaks. Though, I have to admit those are also things I admire about her. She’s one tough woman.

Q: How do you feel about dragons?

A: (His right eyebrow had gone up and he’s giving me a steely-eyed look.) I suppose they have their purpose in the universe. I don’t mind them at all, as long as they stay away from our world.

Q: Hmmm. I heard you had it in for the Dragon Warrior Ginjin. Is that true?

A: (Again, with the eyebrow) He isn’t one of my favorite beings. He’s hurt Alex innumerable times and I wouldn’t be upset if he were to disappear. If I never see him again I’ll be a happy man.

Q: Is it true he’s chosen Alex as his mate?

A: (I think he just growled.) He may have chosen her, but the feeling isn’t mutual. She will never be with that maniac. Not if I have anything to say about it.

Q: Huh. You really take your job seriously.

A: Yes, I do. I’ll protect Alex from him if it’s the last thing I do. (He checks his watch.) Sorry, but I need to get back to Caruthers’ Corp. I have some things I really need to check on.

Q: Okay, well thanks for hanging out with us today. Remember everyone, you can read all about Jake, Alex and the Dragon Warrior Ginjin in Dragons Prefer Blondes.

    Hello Jake,
What is your favorite reward for saving Alex?

  3. Comment by Alana Abbott — July 13, 2009 @ 8:54 am

Great interview, Jake! I’m curious — being a bodyguard sounds like a lot of work. What is your favorite part of the job?

Candace, what’s the most rewarding part of writing? Any personal dragons you need to slay?

(BBB is, as always, on my blogroll at http://alanajoli.livejournal.com. I RSVPed for this event.)

  4. Comment by Candace Havens — July 13, 2009 @ 8:59 am

Thanks Bitten By Books for letting me hang out today! I always have so much fun!

Toni… Wow! That’s a tough one… I think probably Charlize Theron for Alex, Alexander Skarsgard for Ginjin, and Jake is the toughest but in my head he’s very much like young Jason Statham (Transporter).

    Now it’s Jake’s turn…

My favorite reward is something I would never say in public. I’m not a man who kisses and tells. ;-)

  5. Comment by Candace Havens — July 13, 2009 @ 9:01 am

    Alana,

This is Jake… I’m an adrenaline junkie so I kind of like it when the job gets crazy. BUT I hate it when my girl Alex gets hurts. Rips my heart out of my chest every time.

This is Candy… The most rewarding part is honestly those emails that come from readers. The nice ones. :-) They make my day!

Candance if you ever had the chance to collaborate on a story with any author out there, alive or dead, who would it be? Any writing idols/heros?

This is my introduction to this series. Besides dragons is there any other mythical/paranormal creatures?

    *I RSVPD
*I follow BittenByBooks through Twitter, GoogleReader and GoodReads.

  10. Comment by Candace Havens — July 13, 2009 @ 9:29 am

Dina, This is Candy… I think I can say I like all mythical animals. Anything to do with magic or powers is fun for me.

Dina, This is Jake… I would have gone back to the CIA or FBI. I’m very fond of intrigue.

Raonaid, This is Candy…. Wow, that’s a tough question about the collaboration. I love Janet Evanovich, Nora Roberts, Laurell K. Hamilton and Charlaine Harris, would do anything to work with them. :-)

Raonaid, This is Jake… I like all kinds of music. Alex gave me an iTouch for my birthday and filled it with music. I really do like everything from metal to country. Depends on my mood.

  11. Comment by Candace Havens — July 13, 2009 @ 9:32 am

Tina Igne, this is Candy… There are all kinds of mystical creatures demons, fairies, sea creatures and a lot of stuff I made up. :-) Duplops, which are kind of flying camels in the Demon King and I, might be my favorite thing I’ve made up so far. :-)

Another question…I noticed that you do quite a few classes and workshops for aspiring writers. What is your best advice for someone considering writing a novel (especially when they are thinking, “I don’t know if I will be any good and there is so much competition”) Thanks and glad you’re here!

  17. Comment by Lisa M. — July 13, 2009 @ 9:49 am

Hello, I rsvp’d for this and posted it on my FB page; http://www.facebook.com/lasergirl70

I was going to ask Candace if she was planning to write more biographies, but someone beat me to it. I relly enjoyed her book on Joss Whedon. The bronwyn books are great, too. Do you plan to write more on that series? Thanks.
Already a FB friend and following on twitter.

  19. Comment by Candace Havens — July 13, 2009 @ 9:59 am

Medievalgrrl… I keep notebooks now with all the info. I’ve never created a bible for a series, but a lot of my friends do. I would think that would make it easier to keep up, so before I begin writing this next one, I will be going back through The Demon King and I, and Dragons Prefer Blondes and creating one. :-)

Elie… No one can tell a story like you do. You can give three different writers the same premise, and they’ll write totally different books. Just sent down and write. Make sure it’s something you are really passionate about, and then get out there and take classes and hone your craft. :-)

Lisa M… As for the non-fiction, maybe some day. Right now I really love making up new worlds for fiction. I would absolutely love to do more books in the Charmed & Dangerous series. Bronwyn is one of my all-time favorite character. I need you guys to write the publisher and tell them you want more. :-) And tell your friends to buy those books. :-)

  20. Comment by Jo K — July 13, 2009 @ 10:02 am

*Waves hi to Jake and Candace*

I’m gagging to ask this question, because I loved Demon King and I, and can’t wait to read ‘Dragons Prefer Blondes’. Are there more books on the cards for this series?

I’m facebook friends with BBB & Candace
    I’ve twittered too. Twitter.com/hayleyjoanne

OOOOOh, before I go. Big huge hugs of thanks to you, Candace, for all the wicked inspiration and help via your yahoo group. I hope Miss Karma repays you tenfold, for all the good deeds you are doing!! Bless ya.

  21. Comment by Nancy Gilliland — July 13, 2009 @ 10:03 am

Yep, rsvp’s on July 10 at 5:10 pm (whew! I’m not crazy after all. Well, no more than usual)

  22. Comment by Candace Havens — July 13, 2009 @ 10:04 am

Jo K… I absolutely have more books I want to write about the Caruthers sisters. Right now I have about nine of them in my head. I know, there are only four sisters, but I’m bringing in some new characters in Dragons… I have proposals in for those books… So we need to sell lots and lots of Dragons PRefer Blondes so I can write more. :-)

  23. Comment by Catherine Bybee — July 13, 2009 @ 10:07 am

Jake… one quick question for ya, hon. Boxers or Briefs?

  24. Comment by Judy Bradley — July 13, 2009 @ 10:08 am

    Hi Candace,
I have only read the excerpts of your book so far and I am hoping to win so I can read the whole book.
How do you come up with ideas for a story line? Have you always been fascinated with the mythical world?

    Thanks and best of luck!
    Judy B.

    Hi Candace,

I just wanted to say that the book sounds like a winner and I hope to get the chance to read it. (eyeing my tumbling TBR pile and sighing)

I love a spunky heroine and Alex sounds like she fits and a drool worthy hero, mmmmm, perfect.

Do you always write spunky female characters or do you like to switch it up?

Oh and I would have RSVP’d but I didn’t check out the invite until today. LOL Good thing I got to my emails and didn’t miss the event completely. Best of luck to all those who will have lots of entries!

  59. Comment by Candace Havens — July 13, 2009 @ 4:30 pm

Sorry Gang I had to leave for a few hours to preview the new Harry Potter movie! :-) Here we go…

Catherine Bybee, This Jake… You ladies aren’t shy. I’m a boxer man, but please don’t tell Alex I discussed this with you. I fear for your safety if she finds out.

Judy, This Candy… I have always been fascinated by magic. I don’t really know how I come up with my story ideas. They just come to me. :-)

Rebecca, This is Candy… Depends on if I’m on deadline. Up to 18 hours a day but usually around 4-6 hours each day.

Linda, This is Candy…. Um, I like rich girls. I like the idea of being able to buy whatever you want. Call it wish fulfillment. But their lives are far from perfect. :-)

Sarah, This is Candy… Bronwyn’s name was just in my head one day and I knew she was a witch.

Alex D, This is Candy, I feel like my guys are equally strong. But I have a new book coming in Feb. 2010 from Harlequin where I’m both heads so you get both the male and female perspective. I do have an idea for some male warriors so maybe some day. :-)

Zarifina, this is Candy… I’d like to do about nine. :-)

Kim S, this is Candy… I do like strong female heroines. I just can’t write wimpy women. :-)

Kimberly, I didn’t do a lot a of research for Dragons… I did do a lot of research and interviews and visiting sets for the Joss book. :-) And yes he is a great subject.

Chris Swan,… I don’t hate anything, but I USED to say I wasn’t that fond of historicals. Then I read Jodi Thomas and Lorraine Heath and I can’t say that any more.

Bridget… I would want to be Bronwyn from the Charmed books. :-)

Colleen… I was a dancer and actually went to a school much like Fame, back in the day. I always thought I’d have a dance studio. But I hurt my back the first year of college and had to change that dream. My dad was the one who suggested writing. :-) And the ideas just come from me, and I’m inspired by everything!

Samk… Well, in my book the dragons aren’t very well behaved, but I Alex does become friends with one of them. :-)

Amanda… I always worry about these questions, but yes I believe in otherworldly things. Specifically ghosts. To many weird situations for me, I have to believe. :-)

    Diane…. I keep a notebook of everything. :-)

MarnieColette, this is Jake… thanks for asking a question I was getting bored. Leather, she was wearing leather. A man doesn’t forget something like that.

Margay, this is Candy… You have to read the book to find out. ;-)

Kainani, this is Candy… I love dragons too. I’m fascinated by them. So I had to write about them. :-)

Heather C… this is Jake… Alex is the one person who drives me crazier than anyone else.

Kay M, this is Candy… I would love to do another Kira story!!!!

Lizz, this is Candy… I listen to everything. But when I’m in a bind Joss Stone always help me out. :-)

ShirleyH , this is Jake… Any date that doesn’t involve dragons or my girl getting maimed or killed, I call a success. And I do my best not to make mistakes. :-)

Okay, I think we’re caught up for now!

Sharon K, I really enjoyed it. I thought they did a great job condensing that book into two and half hours, and I loved the romances. :-)

For having such a high-stress job/acquaintances, what do you do to relax.

Candace, do you have any pets?

  63. Comment by Jackie U — July 13, 2009 @ 5:48 pm

I came into this late, but saw the Jason Statham casting nod and am absolutely drooling. Handsome Rob…yum…

*clears throat* Um…where was I? A question! Right…Jake: If it came down to it and Alex did pick Ginjin over you (which I’m not saying she would, just playing devil’s advocate!), would you quietly bow down or would you fight to protect your woman, even from herself?

Shared on Facebook, RSVP’d, have BBB on my blog roll, am a following of Candace on Facebook, and am a member of the Blood Bank!

Jake, I may have missed this, but how long have you been working for the
    Caruthers?
I know you have your hands full with Alex, so to speak, but has there
ever been anything between you and either of her sisters?

  68. Comment by Candace Havens — July 13, 2009 @ 6:23 pm

LizzH… This is Jake… To relax I workout, do martial arts and run. I’ve also been known to spend a Sunday afternoon in front of football games, but not lately. Alex keeps me busy.

This is Candy… I have two dogs. Scoobie is part English Mastiff and part Great Dane, and Gizmo is part Japanese Chin and part Maltese. They are my office mates and I just adore them. :-)

Jackie U, This is Jake… I would fight for my woman, even if it’s to protect her from herself. And I bow to no one. :-)

Michele B, THis is Jake… If we want to stay away from the reporters, we just hang around the house. Alex loves her clubs, but she also likes working around the house. She thinks she can kick my ass at xbox 360, but I’ve been letting her win.

Sharon K, This is Jake… I’ve been working there for four, well hell, almost five years now. Nothing between me and the others except mutual respect and friendship. They are good warrior women, but Alex is the one for me.

  73. Comment by Lisa Richards — July 13, 2009 @ 7:44 pm

I love the idea that so many exceptional paranormal writers are writing for the YA market. I had always felt this was an area that would help turn kids on to reading and not only benefit the writers now but also later as they made reading a part of their lifetime experience. Many authors have added a YA series to their writing, do you intend to do this and if so can you give us a brief look at what you are planning?
    RSVPed

  74. Comment by Candace Havens — July 13, 2009 @ 7:49 pm

LizzH, You are not annoying me. That’s why I’m here. :-) I base most of my characters on people I know. Some of them are amalgamations of people.

    Blackroze37, Thank you.

Lisa Richards, I do have YA’s in the hopper. Haven’t really shopped them around yet. But they are all paranormal and all feature strong female heroines and romance. :-)

Are most of the other species the bad guys in this series or is it species/individual specific.?

Thanks for chatting.. hope you had a good time at the movies.

  81. Comment by Candace Havens — July 13, 2009 @ 9:04 pm

Patricia, the YA books I’ve written so far (none published yet) sort of rock that middle grade/YA fence. So I think I’d be okay with the more conservative folks. I deal with issues, but in a different sort of way. :-)

iokijo… This is Candy… The title of my next book is Take Me If You Dare. It’s not in this series, and a whole new thing I’m doing for Harlequin Blaze. Romance and intrigue in exotic locales. :-)

As to the species question, no, they aren’t all bad. Like humans, there are good and bad in all species. :-)

iokijo… This is Jake… No, I’m not always right. I make mistakes, I just don’t like to discuss them.

(I’m going to be a pest and re-paste these ’cause I think they were overlooked… or not taken seriously–and the interviewer who asked me them today was pretty serious about them)

Jake: If you could be a sandwich, what kind would you be and why?
also Jake: did you always want to be some form of “protector” when you were a kid?

and for S&G’s same to the lovely Candace :)

  87. Comment by Candace Havens — July 13, 2009 @ 9:26 pm

Shell Bryce, this is Candy and Jake, we think you’d be better off reading about Jake’s first kiss with Alex, which was his favorite ever. And you can read all about Candy’s first kiss at http://knightagency.blogspot.com/ she describes it in detail there.

As to the food question, this is Candy… Hmmm. If I’m really needing to go the distance I have to stick with boring protein snacks like raw almonds and cheese sticks, and some fruit. But I will admit when I get nervous about something I head for the sweets. We’re trying not to keep so many in the house these days for that reason.

  88. Comment by Candace Havens — July 13, 2009 @ 9:28 pm

Axisor, this is Jake… I’ve never thought about being a sandwich. I think I’d be a hero sandwich. LOL. SOrry couldn’t help myself. As to the protector question… hmmm… I did have a habit of looking after my little brother, and the underdogs on the play ground.

This is Candy… A sandwich? OMG, really? Huh. Um. Peanut butter and jelly. :-)

  89. Comment by Axisor — July 13, 2009 @ 9:31 pm

Thanks for answering. I said PB&J too… because its something that’s reliable and comforting, but you can switch it up to keep it interesting (Grape or Strawberry, Crunchy or Smooth, White or Wheat… etc) :-D

  90. Comment by Candace Havens — July 13, 2009 @ 9:36 pm

Axisor, the peanut butter would have to be smooth, but I like the flexibility of being any kind of jelly or jam I want to be. :-)

    RSVPed and I am here!

Loved the Charmed books. Can’t wait to read the new series. Sounds wonderful!

Martha, this is Jake… Of course I think Alex is sexy. She’s the most beautiful woman in the world.

Wendy, this is Candy, I have about 9 in my head, but how many depends on the publisher and how these first ones sell. :-)

Virginia, this is Jake… It’s a part of who Alex is, so I deal with it. I don’t know anyone who really loves having a camera shoved in their face, but I do what i must to support her.

Lorelei C., this is Candy… Thank you!

Hi Candace. Thanks for joining us here today.

What inspired you to choose a library for the main character’s workplace in Like a Charm?

Do you enjoy attending fan conventions?

  101. Comment by Chris J. — July 14, 2009 @ 7:03 am

    Hi Rachel, Candace and Jake!
Great interview and blog, it is always so much fun here at Bitten by Books!
My first question is for Jake:
If you were dating and it got serious, like marriage would you quit your job because protecting her would be a full time job yes or continue as is? :)
On the subject of a collabaration, anthology, I think that would be awesome!
So my second question would be to Candace:
Would you do a erotica with like Lora Leigh or a paranormal with like Yasmine Galernon and which would you perfer?
I told Gennell you were working on a YA series and she is as tickled as I am! Go Candy!
I love the book trailer your friend made for you!
Hope ya’ll have a Lovely Day and Thank ya’ll for such a wonderful contest!

    Things I have done:
I am a friend to Candace on Myspace, she is in my top 7.
I am also in her writing group.
    I get her newsletter.
I am following her blog Tour, which is alot of fun!
I am already friends with Bitten by Books and the Blood Bank.
I have purchased Dragons Perfer Blondes thru Amazon and already recieved my copy!! Plus all her other books when I first discovered her 2 yrs ago.(I also sent a copy of my confirmed order to ya.)
I emailed this to all my friends and cc’d you Rachel.
I also emailed my friends introducing Candace and how I think they should all be reading her! :)
    I RSVP’d.

    Thanks!

Sorry I’m late Candy and Jake. I just loved your Bronwyn witch books, hope there will be more. Haven’t had time to read the Caruther’s books but they are definitely on the TBR list. Will there be more of the Charmed books?

  103. Comment by Candace Havens — July 14, 2009 @ 7:30 am

Chris J, this is Jake… Wow! That’s a lot to think about. But I couldn’t see giving up my job any time soon.

Chris J, this is Candy… Um, I don’t know Lora Leigh so probably Yasmine, who has become a great friend. We blog together on the witchychicks site. I think I’m more comfortable in the paranormal realm, not to say that I wouldn’t think about the other. :-)

Lorraine, I would love to do more of the Charmed books. It really is up to the publisher. :-)

  104. Comment by Carol M. — July 14, 2009 @ 8:23 am

Hi Candace. I think you missed my questions in #99 above. :)

  105. Comment by Candace Havens — July 14, 2009 @ 8:48 am

CarolM, The idea of a magical library is something I’d wanted to do for a while. Kira, who is the main character in that book is based on two friends of mine, one of whom is a former librarian, Shannon Canard. You’ll notice I used her name, aged her quite a lot, but it was Shannon’s idea to use the library entries at the beginning of each chapter.

I enjoy meeting fans no matter where I am. I’ve never been to RT, but really want to go next year. :-) I hear it’s crazy, but it has to be good with that many people who love books. :-)

  106. Comment by Amy — July 14, 2009 @ 8:57 am

    Hi Candace,

I am a new fan and have just discovered “The Demon King and I”, WOW! Is all I can say…going out later today to get “Dragons Prefer Blondes”! I’m pretty sure I RSVP’d, I know I did on Facebook. ;)

My question is this: if at any time you have writer’s block what are some of the things you do to push through it?

    Thanks,
    Amy Stewart

  107. Comment by Candace Havens — July 14, 2009 @ 9:03 am

Amy, I don’t really allow myself to have writers block. If I feel stuck, I move on to the next chapter or scene that I know. Or I write the end of the book so I know where I want to go. :-) I have lots of little tricks that I use. And sometimes just going to the movies or a museum and taking a little break is all I need.

Out of curiosity, to the great BBB PRIZE GODDESS…. Does referencing my previous lines help you at all? Same with giving my RSVP number?

to Candance: I scanned the used book store I sorta work at for your books and was sad and pleased to not find any. At least no one is willing to give them up yet

  110. Comment by BBB Prize Goddess — July 14, 2009 @ 11:04 am

    Dear Axisor,

Normally when one references their previous lines it is of a great help and thus pleases Me. However, your name is truly one of a kind. Therefore, telling Me all your previous comment numbers is an unneeded task. I already know the comments you have made before.

The RSVP number on the other hand, does help with confirming what you say is true.

    Hope this answers your question.

    Blessings and entry points.

  111. Comment by Elie N — July 14, 2009 @ 11:15 am

Hi Candace, what do you do in your free time (not that you have much)? Are you an outdoors-adventure seeker or are you a read a book-work in the garden type?

  112. Comment by Candace Havens — July 14, 2009 @ 12:11 pm

Elie, I am a read a book in air conditioning type of girl. I love movies, even though watching them is a part of the day job. But curling up with a good book is my favorite thing to do!

  113. Comment by Axisor — July 14, 2009 @ 12:34 pm

    BBB Prize Goddess,

That’s why I used Axisor. Its a lot more unique than Elizabeth. I’m still hoping I inspire other contest entrants to put reference numbers down as well and make your job much easier. I figure its the least we can do for the hard work you’re already doing.

Candace, I’ve absolutely devoured your books, so I’m very happy that Dragons Prefer Blondes is out. : ) My comment / question for you is probably influenced by how much I’ve had to work the past few days…and how early I had to start. Bleh. Anyway, the tone of your writing is just perfect in those times when Bronwyn just wants to send her job to another dimension and go sit on a beach for a few weeks, so what was the worst job you ever had?

    Candace

Can’t wait for your YA books. I am by no imagination a YA but most of the series I have read, I have loved. My whole family are all big readers and my kids always struggled to find age appropriate and interesting books to read. Thank you and all YA writers for recognizing this hole in the reading selections available.

  117. Comment by Candace Havens — July 14, 2009 @ 5:28 pm

Tania, I think the most boring job I had was working at a sunglass place the summer before college. I also worked at Kinderfoto that summer where the kids were great, but the parents were awful. :-)

  118. Comment by Lesley Cheah — July 14, 2009 @ 5:35 pm

    Hi Candace,

Which do you find harder to write? The action scenes or the quieter, emotional ones? Thanks.

    I RSVPed.

  119. Comment by Dianne — July 14, 2009 @ 5:49 pm

Lesley, I never really thought about that. Hmmm. Probably the action scenes because I can see it in my head so clearly but getting the right words so the reader sees it too is sometimes tough. :-)

  121. Comment by Lori T — July 14, 2009 @ 8:59 pm

    Hi Candace~
I read that the titles of this series of books are based on movies. How many books are in the series and do you have the titles picked out yet?

Do you have plans after this series is finished?

I am already subscribed to the Bitten By Books newsletter.
