PLEASE NOTE: This is not a fixed time event, the post just goes live at 10:30 am CDT. You can stop by any time during the day or evening and leave your questions and chat.

Interview:

Hi Lucy!

Welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!

I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been very interesting to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a writer! Readers, if you haven’t done so already please stop by and get your copy of Lucy’s newest book Best Wishes Always.

BBB: What are the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects of writing?

LF: Most challenging is Time with a capital T.  The luxury to just write every day simply doesn’t exist in my life . . . yet.  Anton Chekhov, who had very delicate health, had a revolving door built into his home to prevent his ever feeling a draft.  I feel like I’m stuck in that door, going around and around with the tedious existence of daily life and not able to escape often enough to do what I love best.

The most rewarding aspect is… well, three things.  First is the act of creation.  Completing a story is a high like no other (for me).  Exhilaration and joy run through me.  The second reward is having people read what I created and be entertained.  When I make people happy, I am happiest.  Last is the publisher’s check in the mail!  By the time it arrives all the hard work is just a memory.

BBB: Do you consider your writing paranormal romance or urban fantasy and do you think it is important to distinguish between the two?

LF: I write paranormal romance in my genie books.  My stories are filled with magic, love, and wonder.  When I am Savannah Russe, my shadow side, I write paranormal “unromances.”  My publisher called them urban fantasy.  I’m not even sure what that means except that The Darkwing Chronicles take place in New York City and Dark Nights, Dark Dreams in Washington DC.  As Savannah, what I actually write are erotic paranormal thrillers filled with action and sex. Guys also love them.

BBB: We know that you write under two pen names, Savannah Russe and Lucy Finn, how hard is it to differentiate between the two voices when you are writing? Or even promoting the different books?

LF: I have no trouble differentiating between me as Lucy and me as Savannah.  Lucy is me as I am to the world—gentle, sunny, and want everyone happy. The stories are fun, clever, and tremendously romantic.  Ahhh…love, sweet love.

Savannah is my dark side—and whoa! I guess she’s the part of me I treasure while I hide her deep in my psyche.  She’s Jung’s shadow self that I allow to come forth and create.  It feels different when I’m writing from that part of me and the stories reflect it.  There is nothing forbidden for Savannah…except maybe taking shit from anyone!

Promoting Lucy is way easier…  She doesn’t offend.  Savannah is not for anyone who has a problem with explicit sex, and many people do.  Also, because of Twilight, young people want to read vampire stories.  I have to tell them they can’t read The Darkwing Chronicles until they’re 21.

BBB: What is the most ridiculous thing that you have thought about doing to any of your characters?

LF: LOL.  I don’t do anything to my characters.  Once I dream them up, they tell me what happens to them.  Seriously.  The story at that point rolls out like I’m a watching a movie in my mind.  And the characters take over—I just record what they want, even when I don’t agree.  For example, in book 2 of The Darkwing Chronicles, Past Redemption,  I loved the character of a vampire from Kentucky named Bubba Lee.  I did not want to kill him.  He, however, decided it was his fate to turn to dust.  He had a close call—he was about to be staked through the heart—and I intervened and saved him. He didn’t like me doing that. But by the end of the story, tragically, he had been killed and I grieved.  Believe me, I had nothing to do with his death.

BBB: You make it easy for your readers to feel good about living in small town America. How long have you lived in your rural location?

LF: I moved from NYC to tiny Beaumont PA in 1984.  Where has the time gone?  My mother, Clara Patton, was born on the other side of the mountain in quirky, quintessentially small town Noxen, PA, as many of you know from reading Careful What You Wish For.  She had two Native American ancestors and I believe that’s why I need dirt, not concrete, beneath my feet to feel alive and whole.

BBB: How much research do you do for your books? How much of it actually gets used in the finished book?

LF: I do a great deal of research as my books are chock-full of real-life facts and information, but some of my research was done long ago.  For example, I got started in the antique business in the 1990s.  Learning about Metlox Teddy Bear cookie jars, crackle glass, and antique furniture—all of which appear in Best Wishes Always - has been an on-going process.  And I am a voracious reader with a huge interest in medicine, the paranormal, and history (Lord Byron has always been an icon for me). Much of what I write about I already know; for what I don’t, I often just go downstairs to my library and pull out reference books.  As for how much of that makes it into the books… I use tons!

BBB: How do you keep track of your world building?

LF: I have a good memory.

BBB: Do you plan to write more books as Savannah Russe, set in the Darkwing Chronicles world?

LF: I would very much like to write book Six and finish the series.  Signet Eclipse, the publisher, does not agree.  I will write it at some point even if I have to self-publish.

BBB: What do you feel are the benefits of the new electronic readers such as Kindle 2 or Sony Digital Book Reader to the environment?

LF: Oh boy, a sore subject. I see no benefit, NONE, to the environment, just as the computer did NOT save trees as everybody thought it would.  I think the only advantage to the product is instant access to a book…but then readers miss the joy of going to a bookstore and that magic moment of discovering a book they never knew existed.

BBB: What impact do electronic readers create on the bottom line for authors in the end? Do you feel they have a negative impact or positive, or no impact at all that you can see?

LF: From my perspective, I see little or no impact.  In the long run, because unlike books, they nearly guarantee one reader per work, authors and publishers may see greater profits.  My books have, I think, about a ratio of 15 readers to every one copy—and I think it’s wonderful, even though I don’t make a dime on 14 readers.

BBB: How many more books do you have planned for the Wishing series? What other projects are you currently working on?

LF: I have three more books I’d like to write in the Wishing series.  The next one is called Dare to Wish.  But right now I’m working on two very different works.  The first is called The Cat Prince and it is fantasy.  The second is The Dog’s Case, and it’s a straight mystery-thriller…well no, not quite straight.  The heroine and the dog can communicate.

BBB: Can you share with the readers about your Wishing series and the general storyline that drives it?

LF: The general storyline is simple: If we could suddenly have anything we wished for, what would happen?  My heroines are always women whom we recognize and know…searching for the life and the love they know exists, but haven’t been able to find.  All of them have lost a great love and think they will never find it again.  Then fate sends each of them a bottle…with a genie inside.  But genies, even sexy, macho, gorgeous one, are tricky—and so are wishes.  A woman has to be careful with both of them, lest she lose her heart or totally screw up her life!

BBB: Do you have any stray plot bunnies running around in your head and do you think something may come of them?

LF: My bunnies reproduce prolifically.  I have more than I can count in my head…and I hope to write them all!

BBB: Not many people write about the genie in a bottle, how did you come up with your concept?

LF: Funny, true story:  My agent, John Talbot, was a new father.  One day his wife said to him, “I could use a real genie, not a Diaper Genie.”  He told me what she said… and Careful What You Wish For exploded in my head.  Having watched most episodes of I Dream of Jeannie probably had something do with it.  My working title was “I Dream of Diaper Genie.”

BBB: If your series had a theme song, what would it be?

LF: “When You Wish Upon a Star”

BBB: If you could pick one of your characters to have dinner with, who would it be and why?

LF: Ohhhhh, give me Darius—the bad boy of The Darkwing Chronicles.  Please please give me Darius.  We would not just have dinner!  I take that back.  We’d never get to dinner.

BBB: If you could shapeshift, what animal would you be? And why?

LF: A cat.  I think I was a cat in a past life.   (I do have three dogs too.  But I was never a dog)

BBB: In the Darkwing Chronicles your bats have a very distinctive shape and look. Why did you choose those characteristics?

LF: Because they are fallen angels.  They are dark angels… flawed, sometimes evil, but with the capacity to be superheroes and very very good.

BBB: Have you ever lived in New York City? Or do you just visit often for inspiration?

LF: Yes I did live in NYC, in both Manhattan and Brooklyn.  I don’t get back as often as I’d like to.  I wish I were rich and could keep a pied a terre there.

BBB: What is in your CD player/iPOD right now?

LF: The soundtrack from La Vie en Rose  Favorite song:  Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien

    Lucy,

Why did you decide to write under a psuedonym instead of your name?

    I RSVP’d

  2. Comment by Alana Abbott — July 8, 2009 @ 8:53 am

Great interview! Lucy, given that you’ve got a Jungian archetype thing going on with you and your other writing name, do both you as Lucy and you as Savannah share a Muse? Or do you each have a different Muse working with you? If so, do they fight over who gets to go first?

(BBB, as always, is on my blogroll over at http://alanajoli.livejournal.com/. I also RSVPed for this event.)

  3. Comment by Megan Rose — July 8, 2009 @ 8:55 am

Great interview. I really enjoyed reading it. I’m more intrigued than ever now by urban fantasy :)

Welcome Lucy. Thanks for a great interview. I added your Lucy Finn and your Savannah Russe websites to my blog page (http://cc-chronicles.blogspot.com)

I have read some of your Darkwing Chronicles but I haven’t gotten to your Wishing series yet. Are any of your fictional characters or some of there actions based on people you know?

I RSVP’d on Monday and have sent a friends request to facebook.

Hi. I love the Darkwing Chronicles. I wasn’t aware you wrote under another name so now I have to go get copies of your other books!

What type of books do you like to read?

  7. Comment by Jo — July 8, 2009 @ 9:08 am

    *Waves hello!*

Interesting interview! I wonder, do you ever feel like a person with multi-personalities, having so many different ‘names’ for yourself? How do you keep track of who’s who?

Also, I’m a lover of darker para romance, so would a good place for me to introduce myself to your work be with the Darkwing Chronicles?

I’m really looking forward to getting stuck into your work, always great to discover a new author to enjoy!

I’ve friend requested on fb: http://www.facebook.com/hjkenwright

Hi Medievalgrrl! Oh boy are they ever based on real people…at least the idea of them. I always change the details! Some of my inspirations I can’t reveal of course, but in Best Wishes Always, the character called Ticky Blackstone borrows a great deal from my real-life handyman. Fortunately he never reads a book! Darius, oh hunky Darius, had a real-life inspiration too (can’t tell you that one!) and Rogue in Books 4 and 5 is based on a former boyfriend (loosely!).

  9. Comment by Krysten H — July 8, 2009 @ 9:09 am

Did you always want to be a writer? Were there any books you read that inspired you to write your own novel?

    I’m a subscriber & on FB, too

  10. Comment by Elie N — July 8, 2009 @ 9:11 am

HI, glad you’re here today! I was given a genie bottle as a gift, it is one of my favorite items, it inspires so much creativity!
You covers are adorable, how much creative input do you have on them?
Do your genie books build off of eachother? Are the characters the same in all the stories?

I had no idea you wrote a darker series, would you call it scary?

    Hi Megan,
I love mysteries and thrillers. I’m a big Harlen Coben fan, I collect signed first editions of Dick Francis and Tony Hillerman (I like them THAT much), and have tried to read all of Agatha Christie, P. D. James, and of course… Turn of the Screw by Henry James influenced me and showed me how to write a ghost story.
You’re going to love reading Lucy Finn. The plots are great and they leave you feeling really good.

  12. Comment by Lucy Finn aka Savannah — July 8, 2009 @ 9:15 am

Hey Jo… The Darkwings are definitely dark! You’ll like them for sure. Dark Nights Dark Dreams is even darker though…you might want to try that first.
re: schizo… Nah, I always know who I am but I do get pulled toward the darker side and have to fight it sometimes. Being a BAD girl has its joys and risks… usually I opt for safety first.

  13. Comment by Valorie — July 8, 2009 @ 9:16 am

    Hi Lucy/Savannah!
I’m a huge Darkwing fan and am breathlessly awaiting the next book in the series! The wait is excruciating! Do you know when the next book will come out?

  14. Comment by Lisa Richards — July 8, 2009 @ 9:17 am

I love the idea that so many exceptional paranormal writers are writing for the YA market. I had always felt this was an area that would help turn kids on to reading and not only benefit the writers now but also later as they make reading a part of their lifetime experience. As you stated, “because of Twilight, young people want to read vampire stories. I have to tell them they can’t read The Darkwing Chronicles until they’re 21.” Many authors have added a YA series to their writing, do you intend to do this and if so can you give us a brief look at what you are planning ?
    Lisa R

  15. Comment by Lucy Finn aka Savannah — July 8, 2009 @ 9:20 am

Hi Krysten… I wanted to be a writer since I was about 7 years old. I read some book when I was 8 about Indians, can’t even remember the title, and I was hooked. At thirteen I read Gone with the Wind and felt I absolutely had to write a “great” romance myself. I’m still working on that one.
Definitely Dick Francis showed me how to plot a story. All those wonderful old British cozies showed me how to create a puzzler. I’ve tried to recreate that in my Lucy Finn books.
I don’t know if the Darkwings are really scary…they have a lot of suspense and people tend to stay up to read all the way through. Their humor may stop the horror and chills. However, Dark Nights, Dark Dreams is pretty doggone terrifying, I think.

  16. Comment by Lucy Finn aka Savannah — July 8, 2009 @ 9:24 am

    Hi Elie,
I don’t get much to say about the covers, but I do think the Lucy Finn ones are adorable.
The stories in each book are totally stand alone. None of the characters repeat and the tales aren’t connected, except that they all start off where I actually live, on the side of a mountain in the litte town of Beaumont (near Noxen) PA.
As to Darkwings being scary… I put the answer in the previous comment… so much for typing like the wind. ;-))

  17. Comment by Lucy Finn aka Savannah — July 8, 2009 @ 9:25 am

Hi Valorie, I would love to finish up the Darkwing series, but the publisher won’t do it at this point (I’m hoping Signet has a change of heart). I may have to write it and self-publish. It’s very frustrating for both me and Daphne!

  18. Comment by Raonaid Luckwell — July 8, 2009 @ 9:27 am

    Lucy,
LOVED LOVED LOVED the wishing series and darkwing series. Didn’t know about the others but if they’re really dark/scary I will probably just steer away from those…. I don’t do creepy well.

Your interview is a lot of fun! Thank you for taking the time to share with us. Is there another book in the wishing series coming up?

    BBB… on FB, I think I RSVP’d (I can’t remember… I’ve slept since then)
Lucy do you have a FB acct? Just curious.

  20. Comment by Lucy Finn aka Savannah — July 8, 2009 @ 9:28 am

    Hey Angela T…
Thanks for writing me! I love mysteries… all kinds and thrillers as long as they’re not too gory (ironic right! considering the gore in my Savannah Russe books)

  21. Comment by Qwill — July 8, 2009 @ 9:30 am

Terrific interview. I did not know that Savannah Russe was a pseudonym! Now I’ll have to pick up your Lucy Finn novels! :)

Are you a plotter or a pantster?

I RSVP’d, already member of Blood Bank, friends with BBB on facebook, have BBB on my Blog Roll at The Qwillery (http://qwillery.blogspot.com), request a friendship with Savannah on FB.

  22. Comment by Lucy Finn aka Savannah — July 8, 2009 @ 9:32 am

    Hi Raonaid…
I love Shakespeare, but I wouldn’t even collaborate with him. I’ve tried it and can’t do it. I sort of “channel” my stories and that only works when I’m in a “zone”…sort of a focused trance state.
As for my literary idols… Loved Hemingway and Melville. And then there are all thos LA Noir writers. Raymond Chandler absolutely blows me away.

  23. Comment by Valorie — July 8, 2009 @ 9:32 am

Noooooo! I’m heartbroken. I don’t know what I’ll do if I can’t find out what happens to Daphne and Darius! I did pick up just recently the Sisterhood of the Sight book and from your descriptions it sounds like something I’d really enjoy! Keep up the good work!

  24. Comment by Lucy Finn aka Savannah — July 8, 2009 @ 9:34 am

    Hi Eva,
I have a proposal for another wishing book called Dare to Wish. So far, no publisher has picked it up. I’m working on a wonderful book which is a mystery thriller right now.

  25. Comment by Lucy Finn aka Savannah — July 8, 2009 @ 9:35 am

    Hey Lisa,
I agree with you on the YA paranormals. I think they’re a great way to get kids to read. I’m working on The Cat Prince and it’s a YA fantasy. I’ll keep readers in the loop when I’m done.

  26. Comment by Nancy Gilliland — July 8, 2009 @ 9:36 am

Hi, Lucy. I’m adding you to my library of must reads. My question for you is, when you find the time to sit down and read, who are your must reads? What authors pique your inner demons and such?

    Posted to http://nancyg1950@livejournal.com
    and at http://nancyg1950.blogspot.com
I have been a subscriber to BBB since March, am a member of the Blood Bank, and I rsvp’d.

  27. Comment by Lucy Finn aka Savannah — July 8, 2009 @ 9:38 am

    Hey Qwill..
I’m a very careful plotster although the characters help me figure it out. I love twists and reversals and I spend a lot of time creating a plot that works. Thanks for asking!

  28. Comment by Medievalgrrl — July 8, 2009 @ 9:43 am

Thanks for the Sisterhood of Sight weblink. I took the fun psychic test and scored a 38.

    HI
I’m new to your books. I am really excited to read the Darkwing Series. How many books are in the series?

I am a friend to BBB here, facebook, and myspace.

  30. Comment by Linda AK — July 8, 2009 @ 9:49 am

    Hi Lucy.
Oh I love that cover, it looks fun. I am new to your books so this is going to be fun.

Q: What made you write what you write today?

    I rsvp*ed

  31. Comment by Stephanie M — July 8, 2009 @ 9:57 am

Hi Lucy! How are you? Great interview. I just finished reading Beyond the Pale and i loved it! Vampires with the job of hunting terrorists very interesting. Ms. Finn I am hooked!LOL! I will definitely be getting Past Redemption. I have not read your wishing series yet but i will.
Oh yes my question, sorry I got carried away. What inspires you to write? Any advice for the aspiring writers out there?

    Thank you
    :o)

  32. Comment by Shell Bryce — July 8, 2009 @ 9:57 am

Hi Lucy, sorry to hear that the Savannah series is not of interest to the publisher. I just found them and they are getting near the top of the TBR pile…..

    My questions….

Do you have a comfort food that helps you with your writing? A box of Dingdongs? Gummie Bears? Pizza?

Do you have a favorite genre to read yourself for your own pleasure?

I have added you as a friend on facebook, already BBB groupie, RSVP’d on Facebook and Bloodbank…. Thanks for coming by!!

to Shell: comfort foods… Starbursts, peanut butter in any form, and pepperoni pizza Yeah!
    I’m a mystery/thriller gal.
to Stephanie AND Linda AK: I am compelled to write…and I don’t know why. I just HAVE to. I dream stories all night and want to write them all day. And my advice to aspiring writers… don’t stop, don’t let anyone stop you. Keep trying, keep writing. Creative people are not honored in our culture, but you are special… Believe in yourself. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!
to Deana: There are five books in the Darkwing series. It is really a wonderful vampire series and I know you will love it!

Since a lot of Romance Writers seem to be writing YA series, I was wondering if you have considered writing an Young Adult book?

    I RSVPed

  39. Comment by Lucy Finn aka Savannah — July 8, 2009 @ 10:39 am

    Hi Bama,
I’m writing a YA right now. It’s called The Cat Prince and was influenced by my trip to the Isle of Skye in Scotland. The protagonists are a young boy named Charlie and a cat. The cat is actually am enchanted prince of the Misty Isles, who has lost everything by one desperate act. Hopefully Charlie can help him get back his life, kingdom, and the woman he loves, but it is going to take a lot of courage and a number of battles with the darker forces to achieve it.

So little time, so much to read. Can’t get enough!

  41. Comment by Elie N — July 8, 2009 @ 10:43 am

I grew up in PA (Erie), you have beautiful Autumns there. If you hadn’t persued your dreams of becoming a writer, what career path would you have chosen?

  42. Comment by Lucy Finn aka Savannah — July 8, 2009 @ 10:52 am

Hi Elie, I would have become a painter. Maybe someday I’ll get back to my art, but right now writing takes precedence.
re: Pennsylvania… great summers, beautiful autumn…dreadful winters and late, brief springs. ;-))

  43. Comment by Marcy Strahan — July 8, 2009 @ 11:13 am

    YOU’RE WRITTING IS SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL!
i LOVE WHEN A WRIITER USES SYMBOLS IN THE BEGINNING FOR A BOOK & IT SETS A TREAD/WEB UNTIL THE END.
i FIRST LEANRED THE OLD SAYING:

TELL THEM WHAT YOU’RE GOING TO TELL THEM
    TELL THEM
TELL THEM WHAT OU TOLD THEM

    (AS A KEY WRITTING TOOL)
    (ALSO THE APPRECIATION OF SYMBOLS)
WHAT WAS ONE OF YOUR MOST VALUABLE LESSONS IN WRIITING YOU LEARNED…..THAT HAS STAYED WITH YOU?)

  44. Comment by Lucy Finn aka Savannah — July 8, 2009 @ 11:24 am

Hi Marcy! Wow! Your question makes me think! The biggest lesson I learned was “Don’t look over your shoulder while you’re writing.” In other words, don’t worry about being judged or what someone else is going to think. On the technical side… avoid passive voice, get rid of There is, There are, watch overuse of the “to be” verb… and write, rewrite, rewrite, rewrite… The first draft is only a FIRST draft. Thanks for your thoughtful question!

to Cheryl, Besides my beloved mysteries, I read the local paper every morning and do all the puzzles… I mean all the puzzles! I love the Sunday New York Times too.
to Sarah F… good question. Since I sort of trance when I write, I find Enya and any Irish music works for me. Now why it works, I can’t tell you except that maybe…who knows…in a past life I was born in Ireland. I do know that the first time I saw a photo of Dingle, Ireland I burst into tears and didn’t understand why I was crying. I did go to Dingle after that, and yes I felt as if I had been there before.

5 - and will find the mention to this post (and the quite convenient graphic too) at at http://home.comcast.net/~loismerritt1013/ on Blog/What’s New page, and at http://ov-099.livejournal.com

    7 - Retweeted your tweet earlier. . .

    and I RSVPed. :)

    That all aside, here is
    -
3 - here’s my number three item. . . well, I never know what to ask because I always figure the interview questions in the postings do just fine without me. . . but how about what is your favorite chocolate and do you have a favorite dinosaur? :)

    Hi Amanda…
I think I was seven years old, but may have been eight. I suppose I would have written before that if I knew how to write! I have always been a writer…as long as I can remember. Ditto, btw, to my relationship with animals. I brought home my first stray cat at age 3.

  54. Comment by Heather Brewer — July 8, 2009 @ 12:09 pm

Wow, I have books on my book shelve by Lucy Finn but I didn’t know it was the same person that wrote the Darkwing Chronicles. I never realized you were one and the same.

I loved the Darkwing books and I picked up Dark Nights, Dark Dreams but haven’t read it yet.

Have you written all of the Darkwing books you are going to?

I already follow Bitten by Books on Twitter, myspace and the newsletter.

I read, and have read, anything written by John Mortimer (I love Rumpole), Harlan Coben, Michael Connelly, James Lee Burke, John Lescroart, P. D. James, Dick Francis (& son), and Tony Hillerman. Ditto Dorothy Sayers, Agatha Christie, Rex Stout, and the L.A. Noir school led by Raymond Chandler. Tough old-school P.I.’s–the mean sreets of the city… oh yeah!

  61. Comment by Lucy Finn aka Savannah — July 8, 2009 @ 1:42 pm

    Hi Toni,
re: inspiration. I get a story idea and I just have to write it… Sometimes places inspire me (i. e. Isle of Skye or Taormina, Sicily) and sometimes an incident or anecdote sets off a story, like the chocolate fountain running amok that inspired Best Wishes Always. My friend Maurisa told me about going to a bridal shower where the chocolate fountain erupted like Vesuvius… that got me thinking.

  62. Comment by Cate Masters — July 8, 2009 @ 1:43 pm

  63. Comment by Lucy Finn aka Savannah — July 8, 2009 @ 2:04 pm

Hi Cate, Off the top of my head, I can’t think of anything, except that researching the disappearance/reappearance of a ship (as in the well-known paranormal event referred to as the Philadelphia Incident) for Under Darkness of The Darkwing Chronicles did lead me into trying to figure out the physics of invisibility… oi!

to Tamara… I like the freedom to write about wild, impossible things that paranormals allow…and to investigate what might be as well as what is.
to Renee… the series are on hold for now while I write two stand alone books. We’ll see what the future holds for Daphne in 2010.

Hi Lucy!!! Thanks for stopping by!!! I know you mentioned that lack of time is a problem…I can agree with that…but what do you like to do when you have those free moments?

to blackrose: send me your street address via private message on facebook and I’ll send you bookmarks and stuff.
to Chris Swa: oh yeah, I hate true crime. Real-life villains are mostly sleaze and sickos…and I don’t want their crimes in my head.
to Heather C: I love yard sales and flea markets and I am crazy for travel. My favorite thing is finding a road I’ve never been down before and take it… a city I have never visited… My favorite countries are Italy and Ireland…but Scotland was out of this world too and is now right up there with my old favorites.
As to my Lucy Finn heroine’s choice of loves. She’s too PG to kiss a girl ;-). And while the Darkwing’s Daphne is totally straight, I wouldn’t say it was out of the question for fellow Darkwing, Benny to find the perfect gal. Benny’s guy relationships never work out so who knows?

  74. Comment by Lucy Finn aka Savannah — July 8, 2009 @ 4:55 pm

Hey Adrianne S.. I am thrilled you like the genie series. They come sraight from my heart. My plots are character-driven… in other words the characters usually tell me the direction of the action, although I know how I want a story to end before I write. As to how to get to that ending…wow, I sit down and plot it all out very carefully, but then wham! something happens that I didn’t do! In Best Wishes Always, I had the treasure hidden in a certain place… and guess what? It wasn’t there! I had nothing to do with changing its location… seriously, I was writing and made the discovery and had to ask one of the characters, okay where the heck is it! Yeah, he told me…and I swear he was laughing at the whole thing.

to Doreen… I guess I like Seattle grunge since I was/am a big Nirvana fan. Pearl Jam too… Garbage… Cowboy Junkies… Smashing Pumpkins… October Project… and then inexplicably Enya
Start with Beyond the Pale to get into the Darkwings. How exciting to be beginning it all!
to Seri… When it comes to writing I don’t procrastinate, honest. I procrastinate about everything else! With my writing, I’m super disciplined and decide how many pages a day I want to write, and then just do it. It’s all magical to me and a thrill. Now work is a different story–I drag my feet until panic sets in.

Hi Heather C… I have two favorite spots in Italy (although the entire country is great and I love it all!)… One town is Ravello on the Amalfi coast, the other place is Taormina, Sicily. For the past few years I’ve only been going to Taormina though because I’ve made such wonderful friends there. I hope you get to visit…and go find your roots. In both Ireland and Italy people go out of their way to help you find any family, no matter how distant. They care, they really do. In both countries the people are terrific–warm, sincere, and kind.

  90. Comment by Kimberly B. — July 8, 2009 @ 5:31 pm

HI Lucy/Savannah! Thanks for the great interview! I have one of the Darkwing books, but I haven’t read it yet because it’s number five in the series. To Liza B and Kimberly B… You don’t have to read the Darkwing Chronicles in order. Some people I know started with five. The heroine, Daphne, is continuing and so are some of her friends, but all the stories are new adventures and stand alone. I recap the premise right in the beginning of each book so it won’t be any trouble catching on. Some readers like to start with the very first in the series though, and that would be Beyond the Pale… It’s up to your personal taste.
The genie series are three totally stand-alone books. You can read them in any order because there is no continuing story or characters.
Now as to what makes me laugh… I used to get a giggle out of Jay Leno’s Jaywalking and headlines…hope he continues them when he comes back at 10. I love comedies and pretty much limit my movie-going to them. There is an old Irish sitcom called Father Ted that I have on DVD. Whenever I’m blue I can watch an episode and just howl. It’s totally overthetop and I love it…

Welcome, Lucy! I love mysteries so thanks for the heads up on The Dog’s Case. I’ll watch for it. Small towns, PA - gotta love ‘em. Hope you get thru Big Valley sometime, between Stone Mountain and Jack’s Mountain in Mifflin County. Lots of little towns, farmer’s markets, fleamarkets, auctions, Amish, livestock, beautiful fields, wooded hills - just a wonderful place.

Lucy, I am a big Savannah fan and have all five of the Darkwing Chronicles. Would it help if all of us who really like the series contacted the publisher and begged for book 6? I haven’t read any of the genie books, but will look for them when my to be read pile gets a little smaller! There are about 20 books in it right now.
    For the contest,
    1.I think I rsvp’d.:) (its been a rough week)
    2. I belong to the BBB FB, MYSpace, Blood Bank, email, and twitter
    3. I sent friend requests to Lucy at Facebook and MySpace.

Gotta get to bed, going to have the hip injected in the am! Arthrits booo

Hi Michelle…start with Careful What You Wish For. People have told me that it became their favorite book…ever, so I bet you’ll like it.
Hi Shirley…Favorite Bad Boy? That’s a tough question. My first bad boy crush was Rhett Butler in Gone With the Wind. Darius of the Darkwings is doggone close to a reallife bad boy of mine…and I’m afraid they make great lovers and lousy keepers!
Hi Beverly! I’d be a cat from New Jersey in the 1930s…and I can’t tell you why I said that cause I don’t know.
My top ten can’t live without things… yikes!
    My animals
    My farm
    My friends
    My guy
    coffee
my computer or at least pen and paper
    TiVo
    my truck
    travel
    swimming in the ocean
    OMG!

  100. Comment by Lucy Finn aka Savannah — July 8, 2009 @ 7:14 pm

To Janice… You are an absolute sweetheart. It couldn’t hurt to beg Signet… or get a helluva lot of people to buy the Darkwing books, especially Book 5. Beyond the Pale, the first in the series, is in its sixth printing, but somehow they don’t seem to care. Anyone who wants to write the publisher… The head editor is Claire Zion and the address is Penguin Group, 375 Hudson Street, New York NY 10014
Let me know how you’re doing after the injection…write me on Facebook if you can… I hope it helps!

I RSVP’d and belong to BBB. Your Lucy Finn books sound like fun. As you said, Savannah Darkwing books are definitely in another category. Every once and a while I like something a little dark to read. I like so many different genre of books, that I find myself cycling through them. Need to get Careful What You Wish For for when I need a change of pace. Like you, I need to be in the country. Have to be in the mountains. Love what the cities have to offer, but don’t want to live there right now.

Well way too many people commented for me to go back and see if someone already asked you this question but I will pose it anyway.

Have you ever written something that you truly loved but others refused to publish it? If so, why did they refuse?

I RSVP’d and belong to the BBB newsletter. I am also a friend of BBB on goodreads.

  111. Comment by Wendy — July 9, 2009 @ 2:32 am

    Hi, Lucy!

Wow, I did not know you were Savannah Russe, too! I’ve read her - er, yours! - Darkwing Chronicles and Dark Nights, Dark Dreams which I’m hoping there’s more of, I really liked that one!

I haven’t read your Finn stuff but I can’t wait to check it out! But you haven’t been writing under Lucy Finn for a long time, have you?

Hi Lucy - What authors are autobuys for you and what one book will you always remember and why?

For me I have a few gutwrenching books that I love - Three Wishes by Barbara Delinsky and Linda Howard’s Sarah’s Child.

    I subscribe to BBB newsletter.

Both series sound good & I will certainly look for them as I have yet to read any of your books. How did you choose your pen names? How much time do you spend writing each day?

  116. Comment by Lucy Finn aka Savannah — July 9, 2009 @ 7:00 am

Hey good morning…don’t know if anybody is checking in, but here are the answers to the questions that came in after I turned in…
to Valorie T… there are a couple of movies I watch over and over. One is called Caro Diario, another is Everlasting Piece, and an early Fellini film called Nights of Cabiria. When I was about five, I watched Cinderella seven times… but not since ;-))
To Michelle H… if I get stuck writing I just start writing anything without thinking about it…eventually I get back on track.
To Rebecca S… I write 4 or 5 hours a day. Lucy Finn was created by using a favorite first name and a friend’s last name… I just liked it!
To Pat L… The book I will always remember is Ulysses by James Joyce, not because it was gut-wrenching (it’s far too cerebral) but because of the impact it had on mind and my own writing.
To Wendy… I’ve only been Lucy Finn for the past 3 years, so you’re right!

I love your books!! When will the next dark cresent sisterhood book come out and when will wee see Lucy’s next book.

When will book six possibly be out in The Darkwing Chronicles? Maybe 2011? Does the Series have to end with books six? I enjoy the characters so much and see so many possibilities. Thank you for allowing us into their world.

    Hi Lucy,

Welcome to BBB! I do hope you’re enjoying yourself with us!

Anyway, I haven’t had the pleasure of reading your books yet, so my question is, when do you know when your work is done and no longer needs any editing whatsoever?

Oh and random fun question I like to ask all authors -What would you do if you couldn’t be an author? It could be anything. And assassin and lion-tamer have already been claimed. *^_^*

Lucy, I also love your books under your Russe name!
I know most already asked you everything, so I’m just going to ask about your inspiration to be an author. Who do you look back to from the past, an author or famous person, that influenced you to want to be a writer? If you could meet them now, what would you like to ask them?

I find it intriguing that you write two different types of paranormal fiction under two different names, reflecting the two sides of your “nature.”

I have the Darkwing Chronicles, but need to give the lighter Lucy books a look, also.

Hello again Lucy! I read several book blog sites and have read several negative reviews. If you’ve ever gotten any negative reviews or feedback, how do you keep from burying your head in the sand?

  130. Comment by Kainani — July 11, 2009 @ 11:38 am

I am not done reaading the Darkwing Chronicles but I enjoyed the ones I have read and plan to finish reading the rest. Pardon the French….but it totally sucks that Signet will not publish the 6th book. How stupid is that? If you do end up posting the 1st chapter on your website, I’ll be there!

I wasn’t aware that you wrote under a diffrent name until I read it here on BBB. I went out they other day and got a copy of Careful What You Wish For and can’t wait to start reading it. I’m excited.

Lucy, Thanks for the great books.

I would think it would be difficult just writing DOWN those ideas before you can write the actual stories! I find that it’s hard to rein all the ideas in. Perhaps one should carry around a tape recorder 24/7 for when one is inspired? Sure beats writing it down on scraps of paper, I suppose! Anyway … good luck!
