Swimming Without A Net by MaryJanice Davidson
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, pelagic means living or occurring in the open sea. To the Undersea Folk however, a Pelagic is a large meeting called by a majority of the… well, Undersea Folk. And without so much as a how-de-do for twelve (long) months from the High Prince Artur, who claimed to want her, Fred finds herself summoned by the High King to attend the Pelagic gathering in the waters of the Cayman Islands.
While at the Cayman Islands, who else does Fred happen to bump into? Why none other than the marine biologist who told her he loved her only to disappear like her other beau and have no contact with her for 12 months. What’s up with that? Now both men (okay, one man and one Undersea Prince really), are there vying for her attention. Both men also seem to know quite a bit more about this Pelagic and are refusing to clue her in on why she was summoned in the first place!
To add to her confounding joy, no one told her until the very last minute that all the Undersea Folk are avoiding her like the plague because she happens to be the halfbreed daughter of the traitorous one who tried to start a coup against the royal family and who also shall-not-be-named and a biped (aka human). It makes it really peachy when she learns she has a role in the Pelagic beyond audience and has speak in front of said Folk.
Why? Because the half the Undersea Folk have decided they want to make themselves known to the bipeds while the other half would prefer to live in peace and solitude, letting the ignorant bipeds think of them as mythological creatures. So now she has to explain whether or not they should come out into the world and let it be known that mer-creatures DO exist as well as the possible consequences of coming out of the proverbial closet. Now if it were only that easy…
Ms. Davidson brings in another delightful story of Fred the mermaid in Swimming Without a Net and I honestly cannot wait for the third book. It was hilarious and honestly too short. Once I read that first word, I could not stop until it was finished. And once it was finished, I thought it went by way to fast. Swimming Without a Net did not fail to bring the fun and Fred is just entirely too addictive. What more can I say, well, beyond, “More Fred!”
