Beneath the Skin by Savannah Russe
Beneath the Skin, the third installment of the Darkwing Chronicles, the team gets a new member, but his fit with the rest of the crew is tenuous at best. The team is brought in to protect a prospective presidential candidate whose policies are contrary to current political sentiment from an assassin. The problem is that no one knows what the assassin looks like or who has hired them.
Tallmadge, the new team member, is a vampire who lives for the dark side of vampire existence, seeking out pleasure in drugs, alcohol, sex, and fresh blood. Daphne finds her personal control slipping every time she steps into the vampire club to which Tallmadge belongs while Benny is excited to experience this facet of her vampire existence.
Daphne’s battle with her personal demons mirrors the struggle most humans fight in their own lives. Her strength and resolve give encouragement that anyone can overcome personal obstacles.
Though darker in nature, Savannah Russe does a great job of showing us the vulnerability of human/vampire nature coupled with the resiliency of personal strength. I have thoroughly enjoyed my trip through the life of Daphne and her friends - and she has such great fashion sense, too.
