Undead And Unwelcome by MaryJanice Davidson
It is the latest chapter in the life of Betsy, Queen of the Vampires and life has just taken a turn for the worse. In Undead and Unworthy, Betsy lost two people who were a part of the entourage closest to her and one of them just happened to be a werewolf. Now, she and her husband Sinclair, the King of the Undead, must return Antonia’s body to the Wyndham pack and face Michael Wyndham, the alpha of all weres. She is totally Undead and Unwelcome not to mention completely out of her element.
You would think that life would remain as is for those who stayed at the home front while she was doing her best to prevent a war and keep an alliance with a potentially dangerous group of other paranormals. Instead poor Mark is left alone with a vampire who scares the crap out of him and the devil’s daughter, who also has her frightening moments which have been occurring rather frequently of late. And unfortunately for him, all his ways of trying to reach Betsy and have her bring her tail back home have all gone unanswered.
Tensions are high as majority of the werewolves are blaming Betsy for the death of her friend. To add weirdness to injury, all the weres are also freaked out by the mere presence of her half-brother and ward BabyJon, and she has no clue why. Even Michael Wyndham does not seem to recognize the infant’s existence in the world. And all Sinclair can talk about is his lack of cell phone service. She just wants to go on home and enjoy her shoe shopping in peace. Needless to say, she is undead and rather unaware of the impending chaos that is growing and awaiting her at home -a chaos that somehow makes the threat of 50,000 werewolves seem quite pale in comparison.
Personally, I have always been a big fan of MaryJanice Davidson. Ever since I got my hands on a copy of Undead and Unwed I’d been hooked. Truthfully, I still am. However, Undead and Unwelcome did not seem up to par with Ms. Davidson’s other works of fiction. I know and understand that the story is going through an arc and taking a new direction but I still couldn’t help feeling a little disappointed. Do not get me wrong, it is still an enjoyable (and a very fast read) I still find myself anxious for the next installment, especially with the entirely evil and wicked way Ms. Davidson left us all with the most cruel yet clever, but still VERY cruel, cliffhanger.
