Hey Toni, welcome to BBB, I have read Beg for Mercy and Angel of Mercy, already Cry Mercy is in my To Be Read pile, as I write this. Can’t wait to read it. I was amazed when you said the first two are already out of print, that is very sad, for those people who don’t have E Readers. My question is how many books do you have planned in the Mercy series, or do you know?
[Reply]
Hi, glad your here today.
I absolutely love your book covers, they are very modern, fresh and colorful. How much creative input do you have when the covers are being designed?

Thanks for offering up the free signed bookplates! Thanks for taking the time to come here. Lisa

Sorry, Toni-I just realized I left the O out of your name in my first post! Also, just wanted to mention I did RSVP for this. Thanks again!

Hi replying to my rsvp
What do you think of digital books and do you read them?
[Reply]
Lorraine, I’m so glad you enjoyed the first two books in the series. To answer your question, there will be at least three more. After that, who knows? Perhaps I be like Sue Grafton, who started with A IS FOR ALIBI and is about to release a book starting with the letter “U!”
[Reply]
Elie, although my brilliant agent, Miriam Kriss, did get me the right to consult on covers, I’ve never exercised that privilege. I was so thrilled with the first cover in the series that I was content to let them continue on the same theme.
[Reply]
You’re welcome, Lisa!
[Reply]
Hi Toni!! I RSVP’d to the event - already have toni as friend on FB & Twitter :o)
Read Beg 4 Mercy, and want to read the others in series. (thanks to BBB my want to read list is MASSIVE)
Toni, enjoyed the video posted above, and enjoy watching your other stints on you tube. You work so hard at being fully engaged in the writing community — thanks! it’s authors like you, that keep us newbies on track and give us hope.
My question, I adore how seamlessly you develop your characters, do you have a set way in which you do character work that you’d like to share?
Also — Love to know if you’ll be starting a new series or stand-alone titles soon?
Thanks for being here for us to bombard you with questions, and for the great prize!
[Reply]
Axisor, from the time I decided to become a writer to receiving my first book contract was pretty fast–less than a year. But I was a business analyst at the time, and I created and followed a pretty strict plan, which included finding a literary agent.
[Reply]
Nicole, by the time a release comes out, I’m usually deep into another book, and this time is no exception. But I do plan to scale back my schedule a bit during July, to enjoy a visit with a friend and a trip to RWA National in Washington, D.C.
[Reply]
Yes, Elie, one of the characters in the Mercy series, Tino, is a Chicano street gang leader. In Cry Mercy, he’s trying to go legit, and to bring his reluctant younger brother with him.
[Reply]
Beet, I read all genres, but I usually look for books with at least some element of suspense. I love it when I’m kept up all night, because I can’t stand to put the book down when the characters are in the lurch!
[Reply]
Sarah, I have read a few digital books and plan to get a reader to make it more convenient to do so in the future. I’m also very happy that all of my releases are available in digital format. In fact, I still have one release, (BEASTMISTRESS by Virginia Reede) that has only ever been available as an ebook. You can find it at Ellora’s cave.
[Reply]
Jo, the Mercy series will continue, and have proposals for several stand alone titles circulating. Be sure to sign my guestbook, so you can get announcements when they sell (which they will–I have a WONDERFUL agent).
For characters, I use the character grid developed by Laura Baker and Robin Perini for their workshop, Discovering Story Magic. You can find out about it at the website of the same name–I highly recommend it.

Hi Toni. Welcome to BBB. Thanks for the interview and the bacground on Tarot Reading. I have about 2 dozen sets of tarot cards. Not because I can read them but because of the fabulous art work on them. One of these days I will get around to learning how to read them, but for now I just collect unique ones. Do you have tarot decks and was there one in particular that inspired you?
I RSVP’d and signed up for your updates & added your website to my blog yesterday (http://cc-chronicles.blogspot.com).

Have you always enjoyed writing?

Chris, I went through several tarot decks before I found the one that “speaks to me.” It is the Gilded Tarot, and it was created by an Italian artist named Ciro Marchetti. He has designed several decks, and you can see them at http://www.ciromarchetti.com/.
I gave away my previous decks to others, as they were of no use to me. Someday, I suppose, I shall have to retire my current deck, but I will always keep it.
[Reply]
Cheryl, although I did a little creative writing from time to time, I never really got serious about writing until about four and a half years ago. The epiphany story on the front page of my website is absolutely true!
[Reply]
Hi Toni, nice video, something different to ..read, well see lol.
I chedk out Discovering Story Magic, cool.
Hm, perhaps I should ask something different. Like, if you for some reason fell into your books. What would you do, who would you hang out with?
RSVP:ed and here I am

How hard was it to find a literary agent and any tips?
[Reply]
Linda, I would love to be one of the Balboa Scooby Do Gang! Of course, I’ve been to the REAL Jimbo’s bar (which has a different name) but any excuse to get back to Balboa works for me.
[Reply]
Toni,
I want to start out by saying that I love your name.
I think Mercy is a very interesting and cool character with lots of room to grow.
I look forward to more books about her. Do you have plans for another unrelated book series or stand alone?
Thank you for your stories. Keep them coming.
Toni Smathers
[Reply]
Chris, if you’re looking for an agent, I suggest you start by subscribing to Publisher’s Marketplace. Look at the deals page daily, and see who is placing books like yours.
Second, try to find out when agents you’re interested in are attending writers conferences, so you can meet them face-to-face. That way, you’re manuscript won’t end up in their “slush pile” with the other unsolicited work.
[Reply]
Toni, I have folders and folders of book ideas! I am currently working on a straight-ahead women’s fiction that my agent calls “Sex in the City meets The First Wives’ Club.” I also have a proposal for a contemporary romance circulating.
[Reply]
Thanks Toni! Most of my fellow author friends are self publishers and since I am writing in more than one genre, I want to get an agent. Plus I do better with someone pushing me to meet deadlines.

Hi Toni!!! Thanks for stopping by. I was wondering, if you could have Mercy’s power for 1 week, what would you do with it?
Sorry I won’t be able to watch the video until I get home, but how is the video tour going?

Toni, thanks for the info on character work…googling to find out more now, but not before stopping by your site to join your newsletter. :o)

Heather,if I had Mercy’s power for a week, I hope that I would be up to the ethical challenge of NOT using it for personal gain. But I think I would try to help people who are in mental anguish.
[Reply]
It would be pretty hard to not try and impose your will on someone, especially if they were trying you crazy at work. Maybe a just please leave me alone…

Hi Toni, I have been following most of the tour and it is really entertaining to actually see the author as a real person not just quotes and text book comments…..
I know you are a cat person like me….. If I could shift into any animal I would choose a black panther Which animal would you shift to?
What made you decide to do the video blog tour? Have you had any negative feedback from the tour?

Alana, I especially enjoy filming my TV show and interviewing other authors. You can see episodes at http://toniandrews.com/SoManyBooks.htm

Hi Toni
I love this series. I’ve read them all and look forward to more. Will Mercy ever get back with Sam? Also do you have any problems with your heroine being Mercy and Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson? I realize they are very different but it is funny that they both ae Mercys. Kep em coming and I’ll keep buying them. I got mine @ books a million so I guess I can’t enter that part of the contest.

Hi Toni, Thanks for giving Bitten the video interview. I especially liked what you said about Tarot. Thanks also for the link to your interviews with other authors. I am going to be watching those. I have not read your books yet, but have added them to my ever-growing list.
I am following you on Twitter now as well.
[Reply]
Donna, I had never heard of Patricia Briggs’ stories when I sold Beg for Mercy to Mira–and neither, presumably, had my editor! But, since then, I’ve read Patricia Briggs’ books and like them very much.
As for Sam, I wouldn’t count him out!
[Reply]
Hi Tony… okay, I’ve been asking this same question to many of the authors here that it seems to be a Rao question…
So… if you could collaborate on a story with any author out there, be they alive or passed on. Who would it be? Also, who are your literary heros/idols.
And I’m curious about how you name your characters. Do you let them choose their name, or do you use naming sites or naming books until it clicks with the character.

Hey Toni
Enjoyed listening to your answers to so many questions. You didn’t have any ‘live’ noises to deal with this time! It’s always fascinating to hear about the research that goes into your novel writing: listening to how certain people talk and relate to one another, and your experience with hypnotists! Look forward to your next video; you always answer different questions each time which keeps things interesting and lively.

Thanks Toni. I like to ask authors what they are currently reading. It’s a great way to learn about other authors. I looked the book up. Sounds like an interesting series.

Hi Toni,
I’m a Star Wars fan myself and even with the fantastic use and capabilities of the e-readers now I too, like the smell of a good book. Especially in used bookstores!
Anyway, I haven’t read your books yet but of course BBB likes to keep my TBR pile growing.
So I had a question (and I’m sorry if it has already been asked), since you said you had to remind yourself that writing is what you do for a career during those times when you just don’t feel like writing, what helps you overcome that “I just don’t wanna” moment?

I’ve put a link to the contest on the right sidebar of my blog

[Reply]
Lyda, when I don’t feel like writing, I have to trick myself into doing it.
I used to take a kitchen timer and set it to ten minutes and see how many words I could get done. They didn’t have to be good–it was all about the count. I figured that I could stand ten minutes, no matter whether I was in the mood. And, you know what? I almost never stopped after the timer went off.
A similar tool I love is Dr. Wicked’s “Write or Die.” You set a goal, then start typing. If you pause for too long, you’re punished–with flashing colors and unpleasant sounds (babies crying, nails on chalkboard, Hansen singing “Um-Bop”). Here’s a link but I warn you, avoid Kamakaze mode!

Oh, and Lyda, if I had Jedi mind powers, I’d either bring about world peace or get the next-door-neighbor to fix the siding on the part of his house that I can see through my window. Maybe both.

Fran, I read books in all genres. I mentioned earlier that I like James Lee Burke, but he’s one of a long list. Next on my to-be-read pile is the latest Jodi Picoult.

Hi Toni,

Hey Jo Anne B, I have the dragon tarot too. I waited to buy a tarot deck until I could find the dragon one. Being born beneath the fire dragon and all.

I have a few questions for Toni. Before you were an author, what made you realize that you were good enough to get published? Do you ever feel like your inspiration leaves for a while and you are unable to write coherently, and if so how have/do you fix(ed) it?

Am signed up for BBB and RSVP’s (I think).
Read the blurbs on your books. Very interesting. Another path taken in the paranormal genre. All three books sound interesting. I will have to keep my eye open for them. I noticed you have had a book each year since you were first published. Do you plan on one book a year for your career?
