Hey Toni, welcome to BBB, I have read Beg for Mercy and Angel of Mercy, already Cry Mercy is in my To Be Read pile, as I write this. Can’t wait to read it. I was amazed when you said the first two are already out of print, that is very sad, for those people who don’t have E Readers. My question is how many books do you have planned in the Mercy series, or do you know?

Lorraine, I’m so glad you enjoyed the first two books in the series. To answer your question, there will be at least three more. After that, who knows? Perhaps I be like Sue Grafton, who started with A IS FOR ALIBI and is about to release a book starting with the letter “U!”

Elie, although my brilliant agent, Miriam Kriss, did get me the right to consult on covers, I’ve never exercised that privilege. I was so thrilled with the first cover in the series that I was content to let them continue on the same theme.

Hi Toni!! I RSVP’d to the event - already have toni as friend on FB & Twitter :o)

Read Beg 4 Mercy, and want to read the others in series. (thanks to BBB my want to read list is MASSIVE)

Toni, enjoyed the video posted above, and enjoy watching your other stints on you tube. You work so hard at being fully engaged in the writing community — thanks! it’s authors like you, that keep us newbies on track and give us hope.

My question, I adore how seamlessly you develop your characters, do you have a set way in which you do character work that you’d like to share?

Also — Love to know if you’ll be starting a new series or stand-alone titles soon?

Thanks for being here for us to bombard you with questions, and for the great prize!

Axisor, from the time I decided to become a writer to receiving my first book contract was pretty fast–less than a year. But I was a business analyst at the time, and I created and followed a pretty strict plan, which included finding a literary agent.

Nicole, by the time a release comes out, I’m usually deep into another book, and this time is no exception. But I do plan to scale back my schedule a bit during July, to enjoy a visit with a friend and a trip to RWA National in Washington, D.C.

Yes, Elie, one of the characters in the Mercy series, Tino, is a Chicano street gang leader. In Cry Mercy, he’s trying to go legit, and to bring his reluctant younger brother with him.

  18. Comment by Toni Andrews — June 25, 2009 @ 9:26 am

Beet, I read all genres, but I usually look for books with at least some element of suspense. I love it when I’m kept up all night, because I can’t stand to put the book down when the characters are in the lurch!

  19. Comment by Toni Andrews — June 25, 2009 @ 9:28 am

Sarah, I have read a few digital books and plan to get a reader to make it more convenient to do so in the future. I’m also very happy that all of my releases are available in digital format. In fact, I still have one release, (BEASTMISTRESS by Virginia Reede) that has only ever been available as an ebook. You can find it at Ellora’s cave.

Jo, the Mercy series will continue, and have proposals for several stand alone titles circulating. Be sure to sign my guestbook, so you can get announcements when they sell (which they will–I have a WONDERFUL agent).

For characters, I use the character grid developed by Laura Baker and Robin Perini for their workshop, Discovering Story Magic. You can find out about it at the website of the same name–I highly recommend it.

Hi Toni. Welcome to BBB. Thanks for the interview and the bacground on Tarot Reading. I have about 2 dozen sets of tarot cards. Not because I can read them but because of the fabulous art work on them. One of these days I will get around to learning how to read them, but for now I just collect unique ones. Do you have tarot decks and was there one in particular that inspired you?

I RSVP’d and signed up for your updates & added your website to my blog yesterday (http://cc-chronicles.blogspot.com).

Chris, I went through several tarot decks before I found the one that “speaks to me.” It is the Gilded Tarot, and it was created by an Italian artist named Ciro Marchetti. He has designed several decks, and you can see them at http://www.ciromarchetti.com/.

I gave away my previous decks to others, as they were of no use to me. Someday, I suppose, I shall have to retire my current deck, but I will always keep it.

Chris, if you’re looking for an agent, I suggest you start by subscribing to Publisher’s Marketplace. Look at the deals page daily, and see who is placing books like yours.

Second, try to find out when agents you’re interested in are attending writers conferences, so you can meet them face-to-face. That way, you’re manuscript won’t end up in their “slush pile” with the other unsolicited work.

    Hi Toni
I love this series. I’ve read them all and look forward to more. Will Mercy ever get back with Sam? Also do you have any problems with your heroine being Mercy and Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson? I realize they are very different but it is funny that they both ae Mercys. Kep em coming and I’ll keep buying them. I got mine @ books a million so I guess I can’t enter that part of the contest.

So… if you could collaborate on a story with any author out there, be they alive or passed on. Who would it be? Also, who are your literary heros/idols.

And I’m curious about how you name your characters. Do you let them choose their name, or do you use naming sites or naming books until it clicks with the character.

Hi Toni!!! I just watched the video interview, and I loved it. The ‘press’ and the Jedi mind trick was awesome. I’ve tried to master that over the years, but i still have issues.

I was wondering. Who are your favorite authors, and what do you like to read in your free time?

    Hi Toni,
I haven’t read your books yet but after watching the interview I’m adding it to my list to read.
I’d like to know besides yourself, who and what are you currently reading?

Rao and Heather, I can answer both of your questions with the same answer. My favorite author is James Lee Burke.

Kainani, I am currently reading Serpent on the Crown by Elizabeth Peters. It’s part of the Amelia Peabody series about a Victorian era Egyptologist.

    Hey Toni
Enjoyed listening to your answers to so many questions. You didn’t have any ‘live’ noises to deal with this time! It’s always fascinating to hear about the research that goes into your novel writing: listening to how certain people talk and relate to one another, and your experience with hypnotists! Look forward to your next video; you always answer different questions each time which keeps things interesting and lively.

Thanks Toni. I like to ask authors what they are currently reading. It’s a great way to learn about other authors. I looked the book up. Sounds like an interesting series.

    Hi Toni,

I’m a Star Wars fan myself and even with the fantastic use and capabilities of the e-readers now I too, like the smell of a good book. Especially in used bookstores!

Anyway, I haven’t read your books yet but of course BBB likes to keep my TBR pile growing.

So I had a question (and I’m sorry if it has already been asked), since you said you had to remind yourself that writing is what you do for a career during those times when you just don’t feel like writing, what helps you overcome that “I just don’t wanna” moment?

Lyda, when I don’t feel like writing, I have to trick myself into doing it.
I used to take a kitchen timer and set it to ten minutes and see how many words I could get done. They didn’t have to be good–it was all about the count. I figured that I could stand ten minutes, no matter whether I was in the mood. And, you know what? I almost never stopped after the timer went off.

A similar tool I love is Dr. Wicked’s “Write or Die.” You set a goal, then start typing. If you pause for too long, you’re punished–with flashing colors and unpleasant sounds (babies crying, nails on chalkboard, Hansen singing “Um-Bop”). Here’s a link but I warn you, avoid Kamakaze mode!

Oh, and Lyda, if I had Jedi mind powers, I’d either bring about world peace or get the next-door-neighbor to fix the siding on the part of his house that I can see through my window. Maybe both.

Fran, I read books in all genres. I mentioned earlier that I like James Lee Burke, but he’s one of a long list. Next on my to-be-read pile is the latest Jodi Picoult.

I have a few questions for Toni. Before you were an author, what made you realize that you were good enough to get published? Do you ever feel like your inspiration leaves for a while and you are unable to write coherently, and if so how have/do you fix(ed) it?

Am signed up for BBB and RSVP’s (I think).
Read the blurbs on your books. Very interesting. Another path taken in the paranormal genre. All three books sound interesting. I will have to keep my eye open for them. I noticed you have had a book each year since you were first published. Do you plan on one book a year for your career?
