A big welcome to our readers today! Be sure to read to the end of the interview to find out how to WIN the fabulous prizes being offered up.

PLEASE NOTE: This is not a fixed time event, the post just goes live at 10:30 am CDT. You can stop by any time during the day or evening and leave your questions and chat.

PLEASE KEEP SPOILERS TO A MINIMUM. Not all of the readers today have read L.A.’s books.

Interview:

Hi L.A.!

Welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!

I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been very interesting to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a writer! Readers, if you haven’t done so already please stop by and get your copy of L.A.’s newest book Undead on Arrival.

BBB: What are the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects of writing?

L.A.B: The most challenging aspect of writing is shutting out the world so I CAN write, LOL!  People do nit understand that when a book is gestating in you, just because you aren’t sitting at the computer doesn’t mean you aren’t working.  Writing is a real flow process–there isn’t an “on” switch and an “off” switch… sometimes you get up from the computer and there’s still “juice in the line,” and you’ve gotta have time to think, reconstruct, deconstruct what you’re working on.  But the average person wants to interrupt your flow with subject matter totally unrelated to your flow–BIG GRIN.  the worst offenders are family and friends, but ya gotta love ‘em.

BBB: Do you consider your writing paranormal romance or urban fantasy and do you think it is important to distinguish between the two?

L.A.B: Truthfully, I consider it both–a strong romance is always woven throughout my tales that are highly “action adventure” oriented with a LOT of urban markers in them… how to distinguish between the two is anybody’s guess :)

BBB: What inspired the idea to have musicians also be vampire hunters?

L.A.B: It had to do with all the deaths and insane shootings and violence happening around the rap industry when I began this series.  All I could think of was, “Are these folks out of their minds?”  My position was, “You’re young, filthy rich, living the life of kings and queens, and you have beef with somebody from the old ‘hood…?  What–are you crazy?”  I wouldn’t be mad at anybody with that kind of fame and fortune–not to mention the power of their respective platforms.  The whole thing just pissed me off whenever I’d hear about another rapper shot, dead, caught with a weapon, etc.  So, it just made sense that all the nonsense was demon inspired–and I wanted someone to kick their dumb asses.

BBB: What do you find to be most satisfying about writing in the paranormal genre compared to the others you have written in?

L.A.B: The sheer ability to build the entire world any way I imagine it is the greatest freedom in the world as a writer.  I’m not hampered by reality.  As long as I can develop the rules in a way that makes sense, readers who love this genre are willing to go along with you for the ride.  That’s the best.  As the writer, you create the rules.

BBB: How much research do you do for your books? How much of it actually gets used in the finished book?

L.A.B: OMG… I do TONS of research–more than for standard contemporary fiction.  I have to look up locations, esoteric religions, weapons, history, myths, legends, lore, you name it… and about 90% goes right into the various series I write.  Nothing is wasted.  It’s like Prego spaghetti sauce–it’s all in there!

BBB: How do you keep track of your world building?

L.A.B: I keep track in notes (copious notes) and on huge white sheets of dry erase paper tacked to my wall.  But once I build it and know it like the back of my hand, memory is my catalyst.

BBB: If you could be any literary character, who would you be?

L.A.B: I haven’t a clue?  LOL!  Most of them were all so tragic… my life is pretty calm and mellow.  Not sure I want all the pathos, drama, or adventure–it’s nice to read about, but living it is a whoooole “nuther” matter :)

BBB: What do you feel are the benefits of the new electronic readers such as Kindle 2 or Sony Digital Book Reader to the environment?

L.A.B: Any new technology that allows readers to take their books with them to wherever they want to be, is awesome.  Just imagine, with all the airline restrictions regarding carry on luggage and weight, if you’re able to take five big books with you on vacation–or to simply download the one that strikes your fancy.  Now that’s pretty cool.

BBB: What impact do electronic readers create on the bottom line for authors in the end? Do you feel they have a negative impact or positive, or no impact at all that you can see?

L.A.B: I haven’t really seen any negative impact yet… maybe time will tell, but I still get royalties either way.  So, to me, if it broadens the base then it’s all good.

BBB: Who or what inspires you to write?

L.A.B: World news inspires me to write… there is just so much going on, so much struggle, drama, pathos… the stream of stories and causes is endless.  The human condition is the greatest story on the planet, which is unfolding exponentially as we speak.

BBB: Can you share with the readers about your different paranormal series and the general storyline that drives them?

L.A.B: Sure… The Vampire Huntress Legends series (affectionately termed, the VHL), is about a family of vampire hunters–Damali Richards is the young hip hop spoken word artist who learns she is the millennium Neteru.  That being is “the one” who can either give rise to being the greatest slayer that ever walked the planet–or birth a day-walker (the greatest vampire.)  All sides are after her… and then her ex-boyfriend (and ex drug king pin), who was supposed to be a Guardian but strayed from the path (Carlos Rivera), gets bitten.  The entire series is about them overcoming their pasts, coming back together, and having to make some serious life changes to conquer evil before it conquers them.  The Crimson Moon Novels is my werewolf series, which features Sasha Trudeau–a genetically engineered wolf created by the military to take on the newfound paranormal threat.  the government has just learned that there is a paranormal world out there and they want it eliminated.  Enter a very sexy hunk, Max Hunter, a Native American Shadow Wolf… and entirely new phyla the government knows nothing about.  He hails from the noble wolf totem, the ones sworn to protect humans.  Now add in double-dealing vampires, the Fae, demons, and the hodgepodge of supernatural beings and you have the CM series.

BBB: Do you have any stray plot bunnies running around in your head and do you think something may come of them?

L.A.B: I always have plot bunnies running around in my head–stories that are just in the concept draft space of my brain right now.  Sometimes they evolve into a storyline within an existing series, sometimes they stand on their own and become strong enough to become their own series.  That’s the fun of it… until I get there, I just never know where stuff will go.

BBB: Outside of writing, what is the most interesting job that you have ever had?

L.A.B: Working with young people and small businesses — there is something profound about working in the community.  Each person has a story, hopes, and dreams… it is both humbling and rewarding.  There’s where you learn a lot of respect for the human spirit and where you are taught that every single person on this planet makes a difference.

BBB: If your Crimson Moon series had a theme song, what would it be?

L.A.B: “Who let the dogs out!” LOL!

BBB: If you could pick one of your characters to have dinner with, who would it be and why?

L.A.B: Aw… maaaan… Carlos Rivera when he was still a vampire.  Dude is deep–but real… would probably get myself bitten, LOL!

BBB: If you could shapeshift, what animal would you be? And why?

L.A.B: Although the wolves are really interesting, I am partial to the big cat family… a huge black jaguar would be awesome.  I like the stealth and climbing ability of the big cats, as well as their power.  They are majestic creatures.

BBB: What do you like on your pizza?

L.A.B: Everything!  Ha!  No, I’m a pesto and anchovies kinda girl with marinara sauce or white & basil… I like the gourmet pizza–the weird stuff.  But can also go with peperoni and bacon with a beer any day–BIG GRIN!

BBB: Where is the most beautiful place you have visited in the world?

L.A.B: The Caribbean.  There is where the sunsets are a religious experience, as is the dawn… sugar sand beaches and crystal blue waters… romantic, music is mellow… maaan… plant me there.  That’s where I want to one day write from six months a year, then come back to Philly during hurricane season (even paradise has a down side, smile.)

BBB: What is in your CD player/iPOD right now?

L.A.B: Depends on which playlist… I have a gym list which is nothing but crazy rap–for the heavy thumpin’ percussion and base… then on my mellow list… all kinds of smooth jazz and love songs… everything from Mariah Cary, to Debarge, to Alicia Keys, Wil Downing, Regina Belle, Prince, Celine Dione, Earth Wind and Fire, Barry White, Marvin Gaye, Luther, Maxwell, Jill Scott–my listening tastes are eclectic.  (The better question is probably, what don’t I listen to?)

Hi, I am a huge fan of the Huntress series! I am anxious to read the YA book that follows the thirteenth.

    I have a couple questions…

What happened to Ayana’s dad? Did he have special abilities, was he supposed to be a guardian?

I loved the illustrations in the last two books. Can you tell me more about them? Do they have something to do with the graphic novel (this is a comic book right?)?

You are one of the sexiest writers I have read (I mean your writing-lol), is it going to be hard to tone it down for the YA audience?

I have not yet read the other series, although it is on my reading list. I really love your work, keep it up!

Hi, L.A. Thanks so much for joining us here today.

Do you or any of your family or friends have any military background, or did you rely solely upon research for the Crimson Moon series?

  5. Comment by Lisa Robinson — June 24, 2009 @ 8:57 am

My R.S.V.P. is a resounding ‘YES! I’ll be there!’ and so I am and with a question, too!

    Q:

When it comes to creating a series of books, did your books firstly formulate as one entire storyline that turned out to be too big for just one book–or were the subsequent books in the series inspired after the creation of the first book?

  6. Comment by Elie — June 24, 2009 @ 8:58 am

Hi again Ms. Banks, I should have wrote my questions down, I am just so excited to be here!

I was wondering about your book cover. It looks like the same model on each book (VHL books). How much creative input do you have on your books?

I would love to be entered in your drawing. I already have all the VHL books, but I would wear or carry with pride anything else from you!

Elie N at zenfoxflower (at) yahoo (dot) com

  7. Comment by Bethany — June 24, 2009 @ 9:06 am

    Hi,
I was just wondering, as an author who writes in two different “worlds,” do you ever get an idea for a character or plot line, and then as you are writing realize it would go better or make more sense in your other series? Or do you always think clearly and purposefully as far as which one you are writing for?
    Thanks, Bethany C.

  8. Comment by Toni Smathers — June 24, 2009 @ 9:15 am

    L.A.,
You have written books in several different genres. Which do you enjoy writing the most?
Thank you for all of your great stories. I look forward to starting your Crimson Moon series.
Sasha Trudeau sounds like she will be fun to read about.
    Thanks again,
    Toni

  9. Comment by Miki Quick — June 24, 2009 @ 9:17 am

    Hi L.A.~
I love your Vampire Huntress series; they’re so detailed and deep! And it was great to meet you at RT this year. You took the time to talk to me about my writing and you were so encouraging and happy to share some tips on the business that it was one of the highlights of the convention for me. Thanks for that! =)

    Bright Blessings,
    Miki

  10. Comment by Rocky Shields — June 24, 2009 @ 9:19 am

I really enjoyed the Huntress series and was sad to see it come to an end.

I heard you were once a Missouri native. Being from Southeast Missouri I’m huge fans of Laurell K. Hamilton and Jim Butcher.

Best Wishes from the Show Me State!

  11. Comment by LA Banks — June 24, 2009 @ 9:19 am

Hey, Everybody!!! I am soooo excited to be here! will try to answer all questions as best I can :) Ok… I have “some” creative input on my book covers–but this remains the great lament of all authors, smile. I got to pick my heroine’s look and was blessed with a really great artist, Vince Natale, who did each cover–so the style is the same. And, yes… when I first began, i had this HUGE story that was too big for ne book. that spilled over into 2 books, and from there I’d add on — always with too much to fit one book, LOL–which isn’t the way you’re “supposed” to do it, LOL! Book 3 was a standalone that had “spill over” into book 4… then what I did for 4 ran into book 5, and so forth :) As far as military research, i have very good friends who are in the military (my dad was a WWII vet), plus my buddy Chip is from west Point–and he’s connected me to his Special Ops buddies, so I can get stuff straight. That’s important as a pure matter of respect for those in uniform.

Now… as to Ayana’s dad… I never defined him. Just mentioned him as an absentee father–to really show that a single Mom can make it, if she’s diligent and also has support. the metaphor is, you never know what creative gifts that child will have, so it still takes a village–even if the dad leaves the young woman. It was my nod to all those young women struggling with this heartbreaking issue. the illustrations in the last two books were to show what we can do in the graphic novels–which should be coming this fall. Although the VHL series has ended, we’re gonna pick up the story post Armageddon with the grpahic novels drawn by the Dabel Bros Productions. And, YES, it is hard to tone down the sexiness, LOL… but I have racheted it down to PG-13 for the YA novels coming out. I had to, smile… I’m a Mom and would be mad if my kid picked up something said to be tame that wasn’t… much respect :)

My fav vamp movie of all time is an oldie… Frank Langella’s Dracula… but there are so many others, like salem’s Lot that gave me the chills for days! LOL! I’m a night owl when creating, a daybird to edit :) Those two functions use separate parts of the brain, smile.

BIG HUG, y’all… waiting on more questions–Leslie!

  12. Comment by LA Banks — June 24, 2009 @ 9:29 am

I wish I was organized enough to always be clear and purposeful, smile… but sometimes I get turned around and think–”Ya know… this would be better in the other story.” But thankfully, I’ve always been able to discover that before I was too far down the path–you know that point of no return. And just like you’re not supposed to have a fav child… I guess we authors aren’t supposed to have a favorite series–but i do… the VHL was my first (chuckle) and i’ll always be partial to those characters. But the more I’m writing the Crimson Moon, the more I’m enjoying them… I guess it depends on what you’re working on at the time :) (Big Hug, Miki–it was a pleasure to meet you too at RT) But I’ve always been a Philly girl… although Misouri has a way cool slogan (much cooler than ours!)

  13. Comment by Apryle — June 24, 2009 @ 9:30 am

Hello L.A.!!! This is such a thrill for me and I want to ask a kabillion questions but at the risk of being Uber Fan-thetic I’ll edit.

Having read the entire VHL (twice) series I have always wondered if your vision for Damali & Carlos was set from the beginning or evolved as they evolved?

How difficult is it for you to stay atop current street slang particularly Latino?

Thank you Leslie- I have posted to my Twitter and Fb sites! Apryle L

  14. Comment by Shell the HOckeyvampiress — June 24, 2009 @ 9:30 am

    Hello LA
I have read and own most of the VHL series and have recently picked up a couple of the others. My question is:

What is your take on the use of alias’ or pen names in the field? Do you find that using your real name (or close to it) allows your privacy to be invaded more than if you used a completely different name.?

I also would like to know who you would have play the main characters from both series if it were produced for television or movies? I kinda see Gabriella Union as Damali…

I have added your fan group of facebook and am following you on twitter.
The BBB links are already and permanently added to my blog… :)

  15. Comment by LA Banks — June 24, 2009 @ 9:31 am

PS: I was really sad to see the VHL series come to an end, too… but for a while I didn’t have a whole “book” in me–after 12 books and I refuse to cheat you guys (the readers.) But I had scenes, snippets, half stories left over rattling in my brain–which is cool for the comic format. So, i get to keep going in a series I love without protracting it and making it a sagging novel, ya know? Now, with the next generation = the children of the VHL coming out in the YA next year… I am having a BLAST! That feels all new and different, lots of world building and a LOT of fun :)

  16. Comment by LA Banks — June 24, 2009 @ 9:35 am

:) Ahhh…. these characters definitely evolved as the series evolved and as I aged them and took them through changes on the pages. In terms of staying up on street slang… that’s where my daughter and her friends came in. At the time I was writing the series I had a houseful of teenagers, LOL–I was like “The Kool Aide Mom’ and everybody’s kids came to my house to eat and hang out… so I’d hear them, and they’d make me laugh–or they’d say something, and I’d ask them to “break it down for the old lady,” and laughing at me, they would say, “Aw, Ms. B, this meand XYZ.” It was a lot of fun. I truly enjoy young people!

  17. Comment by Caden Leigh — June 24, 2009 @ 9:37 am

    Les,

I am a huge fan! I adore your books, I am always left exhilarated and quenched after reading one. Thank you for your contribution to my reading addiction. “The Cursed” is my absolute favorite, but really all are enslaving. Keep writing and inviting us into your world.

    Sisses,
    Caden Leigh

  18. Comment by LA Banks — June 24, 2009 @ 9:40 am

on pen names… i did that because I started out writing in a genre that was minimal on scary, blood, guts, and violence–then i started writing paranormal and both my agent and editor said, you have to go under a diff name so your normal readers don’t get blindsided thinking Leslie has written another romantic story of comedy–then BAM! LOL Sorta like going to the supermarket to buy Frost flakes and coming home to open the box to find Lucky Charms… not cool. Gotta respect the reader. So a name change was in order. As a public person, your privacy is somewhat lost, but not like a movie star or anything. i still go to the 7-11 with scrubs on and my hair in a ponytail and nobody knows who i am–that’s cool, LOL (no paparazzi live outside my door.) BIG GRIN!

But I haven’t a CLUE to who i’d see as damali or Carlos… like… there must be a new face… thinking how they had fresh faces for Twilight and true Blood, ya know… people we haven’t seen before so there’s no expectations of the actss… that is a running theme on the yahoogroup–and it’s a hotly debated topic–Bigger smile! Everybody has their fav pic/actor :)

Would you say your Crimson Moon series is a sexy as the VHL?

One of my favorite aspects of the VHL was the relationship with Carlos and Damali. Their intimacy (not just physical) really made the series special. Actually their intimacy with the whole team.

What kinds of paranormal creatures are in the Crimson series?

  22. Comment by Elie — June 24, 2009 @ 10:02 am

Did you get any criticism or complaints from religious groups about the content of the VHL stories?

Hi L.A.!!! Thanks for stopping by…:)

What got you interested in urban fastasy in the first place? Plus, with the VHL coming to an end, what project/series is next in line?

I just checked out the website for the Crimson series, looks great. I can’t believe you are putting out two books a year. That’s incredible considering how much research must go into each series! How many books are you anticipating for the series?

  27. Comment by Jeff Reid — June 24, 2009 @ 10:24 am

TWELVE of the L.A. Banks titles are available to cast at Storycasting, but only VH#1 and VH#2 have been cast so far - and no one has “cast” Damali yet. Very curious to see who the readers see in the role!. If you’ve read them and know who you’d like to see in the movie version, join and cast (always free and non-spamming). And see if you can get L.A. to cast as well - she has an Author Account, but hasn’t come and cast yet (although she IS really busy…)

Good afternoon, L. A. I’ve read your Crimson Moon Series which I loved and several of your Vampire Huntress as well. I have many more in my stack to be read, if only there were more hours in the day.

You are such a well rounded author, do you find it difficult switching to different genres?

I have recently noticed that some authors are offering a free pdf version of an earlier book that they had published when promoting a new book or series. When I first saw this, I was amazed. I asked myself why they would do this. No more, as I have discovered that this is a great way to hook potential new readers. I myself have purchased the promoted book and a copy of the one that I had just read free. What do you think of this practice and would you be inclined to offer one of yours free to promote a new book?

I noticed on your website you write many different genres. Do you find it difficult switching back and forth and do you have a way to clear your thoughts when you are working on one particular genre so the others don’t sneak in?

Hi Leslie, I’m so glad you are on here. I have seen all of your books BUT have never read them. Now I am ready to go out and buy all of them, LOL! I want though to start with the Vampire Huntress series. You have probably already answered this, and please tell me if I missed it, have you always been interested in vampires? Even as a child? Also, do you have any all-time favorite books that you would recommend to others, and they don’t have to be about vampires. So when I get paid on Friday, I’m heading to Borders to start my Vampire Huntress collection!
    Sincerely, Carol

  34. Comment by Lisa Richards — June 24, 2009 @ 11:18 am

I love the idea that so many exceptional paranormal writers are writing for the YA market. I had always felt this was an area that would help turn kids on to reading and not only benefit the writers now but also later as they made reading a part of their lifetime experience. Many authors have added a YA series to their writing, do you intend to do this and if so can you give us a brief look at what you are planning and what name you will be writing under?

  35. Comment by Raonaid Luckwell — June 24, 2009 @ 11:27 am

Hey! I’ve only read two or three of the short stories you have out for the Vampire Huntress Legend series. It’s what got me interested in reading the series but at the time I only found them in trade sizes - when it comes to trade size and hardbacks, I don’t buy. Too expensive for my limit funds.

Then a friend on a yahoo group had “Minion” in regular paperback, and knew that I wanted to read the series, and so she gave me the book. So I have Minion and The Awakening in my TBR pile. I also managed to find (and kept) the free booklet you had out (the collectible one)

Since I’ve been asking this same question to authors… If you could colloborate with any author, alive or dead, on a story, who would it be?

And in the writing who is your idol or do you have one?

The books do look great and love that trailer.

I have always wondered about trailers. Who does them, and do you have any input?

  43. Comment by Kimberly B. — June 24, 2009 @ 12:34 pm

Hi L.A.! The VHL series has been on my TBR list and I’ve been working my way through it for awhile. Minion was probably one of the first paranormal novels I picked up! I really like how, with all the darkness in the books, there seems to be a real positive message as well. And I can’t wait to read the Crimson Moon series, which sounds great!
I know a lot of authors talk about how their characters seem to have minds of their own, and can often surprise their creators. Did any of yours start out one way and as you kept writing turn into something completely different? And who of the recent crop of paranormal authors do you like?
I also RSVPed to this event!

  44. Comment by LA Banks — June 24, 2009 @ 12:41 pm

Hey, Naleighna Kai–LOVE YOU RIGHT BACK, Lady, LOL! Hugs! Hi, Elie… the crimson moon gets pretty sexy… but really, i haven’t gotten that intimacy between Sasha and Hunter like there was between Damali and Carlos. The VHL series had that “first love” hard down, in-your-head, read-your-mind, through the fire, hell and back kinda love, BIG GRIN. Folks, truthfully–as in real life… I only think I could pull that off once, LOL! Hunter and Sasha (are shadow wolves), older, a little more sedate… and theirs is a more primal love. But they’re getting hotter each book, i think. The differentiating factor is, Sasha didn’t love him as insaney as Damali loved carlos–like I said, that first love jones is way different.

Now, oddly, religious groups and some individuals “initially” won’t touch the books because it says “Vampire Huntress’ on the jacket. However, I have been really pleasantly surprised by the number of clerics and very devout people who have written to say that they rad me (after getting over that first hurdle on the recommendation from a friend), BECAUSE I address spiritual issues in the story in a way they can agree with and understand. I follow the Bible, the Quran, and Torah accurately… i don’t mess around with religious texts in any way that could offend folks. Much respect is always due in that regard.

  45. Comment by LA Banks — June 24, 2009 @ 1:06 pm

Hey Dakota! BIG HUG… (another fellow paranormal author who is WICKED FUNNY y’all!) I’m trying to keep up with the questions–sorry guys, LOL… ok… these are all such great questions!

What got me into Urban fantasy…? I’ve ALWAYS loved paranormal stuff and when I began, it was horror or nothing. My first novel — shelved as a romance under Leslie esdaile, was “Sundance,” for Kensington/Arabesque in 1996… it was a paranormal! But they put it in romance because there wasn’t a “category” for that yet. The guy and girl are having the same dream from 500 years ago when they shared a past life and a love that would never die… same bad guys are after them from the curse that was levied.. c’mon… that’s a paranormal :)

(Thanks also Elyane for following on Twitter!)

Circle of Seven did the trailer… that was a LOT of fun. you get input as the writer–basically can accept the script, see the actors–but you have to work within reason, ebcause unless you’;ve got a Hollywood budget, BIG GRIN, you can’t expect the folks to work miracles, LOL! They did a fab job given what I could afford at the time–and the owner is a DOLL to work with!

Now on scheduling… maaaan… I do two books+ a year for sure. One VHL (that now will be the YA), one Crimson Moon, about 4-5 anthologies (which counts as a book), plus now graphic novel scripts and the manga script for the series, whew! Plus, next year, I’ll be doing The Men of Delta Force romance series–ouch! Soooo… yeah, that’s why I haven’t been on Storycasting (my apologies, Jeff–you’re so right.) But in all honesty, I can’t cast Damali… I haven’t “seen” her yet. There are some known stars who I guess could come close–but I think this requires a fresh face.

Switching genres? LOL–OMG, that gets tricky–unless I do a hard change… like do a vamp novel, then a romance, then do a werewolf, and then do a crime. I need a complete palate change or i can begin to blur :) That’s how I space my projects, too… knit one, pearl one… and i keep it all up on a wall using those dry erase sheets, smile!

On pdf books, I’m cool with that–anything to market the new. But that’s really the publisher’s call–I don’t get to say :)

Who would I be for a day… geeze… I haven’t a clue. I’d be scared to get into someone else’s body and get stuck, LOL! OY! Forgive me, it’s the paranormal writer in me–that’s like a Twilight Zone episode. But, hmmm… for one day… I’d say Michelle Obama–gotta admit her husband is fine, ha ha ha… and I’d love to see inside the white House 9all the rooms you can’t see on tour). But with the Secret service detail, death threats, et al, nah… I’ll stay Leslie :)

My fav reads? Unfortunately… I so don’t get to read like I want to any more–can’t read in the same genre while writing. that sux

  47. Comment by LA Banks — June 24, 2009 @ 1:19 pm

More on what I read… J. California cooper had a scary book called, “Family” — which was about a young man who got roots put on him… scared the beejeebers out of me, LOL! Then there was a paranormal by Tina mcElroy Ansa, “The Hand I Fan With,” — both were offbeat and strange… and there’s always tananarive due, who did “The Living Blood” series about immortals. But my reading taste is about as eclectic as my music taste… I read everything from biographies to spiritual and self help stuff to romance and women’s fiction–it’s hard to pick a fav… it really depends on my mood :)

On YA… I so agree that it’s great to get young people actively reading again! Right now I’m planing 3 books in that series… and going back to an earlier questions, I’m planning 6 total in the Crimson Moon. But you know what they say about “the best laid plans,” LOL. Just like I’d never intended for the VHL to be 12 books–who knows? So, the better response would be, currently i’m contracted for 3 and 6, respectively :)

AH! If I could pick two writer’s to collaborate with, dead or alive, who would they be… wow! Alive; Toni Morrison and Maya Angelou… I’d love to write a paranormal with them to pick their brains for the deep historical content and the “voice” they write in — plus the prose that’s like freakin’ music on the pages… don’t know if I’ll ever be able to do what they do, namely move people to the depths of their souls. That’s a gift. And if I could go back and work with a deceased author… Octavia Butler, arguably one of the most intelligent authors in sci-fi of an era. (Guess that also answers the question of who my writing idols are, smile!)

The greatest support while embarking on this career are/were hands-down, my girlfriends. Husbands (yes, plural–for good reason, ha ha ha) wouldn’t read my work… family claimed I was losing my mind and needed to get a day job (which I did.) Kids, fergedabout it. Only “my girls” had my back, read my ragged chapters, and told me, “Chile, this should be in print!” THEY believed in me when I didn’t even believe in myself (sniff.) Naw, looking back and laughing at it all now… So, any hidden writers out there–get a good crew of encouraging souls around you and don’t listen to significant others and family, if writing is your dream. trust me on that!

  49. Comment by LA Banks — June 24, 2009 @ 1:30 pm

Oh, yeah… these characters 9and books)- started out one way and morphed as the storyline developed. A couple of characters got so strong that i couldn’t kill ‘em, wooden stake to the heart, notwithstanding, ha ha ha! Carlos was one of those types. But if you go to http://www.vampirehuntress.com skip past the intro to get to the home page, you’ll see this HUGE site… which also morphed. If you click on “Web exclusives” you can see all sorts of stuff we added, like a free pdf of a teacher’s guide… here’s a link to the major themes behind the saga:

http://www.vampirehuntress.com/themes.html — which deals with why I’ve written what I’ve written and some of the positive messages embedded in the series.

For the most part, though, my vampires are really, really, REALLY bad guys… fine, sexy, but definitely twisted guys and gals… all except one (Carlos, smile.) He defies category. That was one of those characters that surprised me–just like Cain did. i had plans but my character had other plans, LOL.

Right now there are a LOT of fabulous authors in this genre… Sherrilyn Kenyon, Charlaine Harris, Kelley Armstrong, Christine Feehan–i mean the list is long and awesome… Hey, Dakota Cassidy, say hello, darlin’ (wink! That woman is funny as hell!) Respect across the board–I almost hate to start naming names because I know I’ll forget someone and go, “Dooooh!” (like Homer Simpson, LOL!)

Well, folks… it’s about 4:30pm Eastern Standard Time here… gotta finish up some stuff for St. Martin’s Press — right now I’m working on Crimson Moon book #5, which is due July 1 — YIKES, LOL! Also got edits coming in for 34, and edits for the first YA in the series… the next two weeks are gonna be rough… also over the July 4th holiday, I’ll be book signing in New Hampshire (July 3rd, Borders in North Conway)… that’s what’s on the docket right now: Graphic novels (to extend the VHL series beyond where it ends in book 12), manga to pick up the series before the first book–going back in time in a prequel to Minion (book 1), more Crimson Moon novels, the YA new series coming out in 2010 early next year, and the military romances (Men of Delta Force.)

That said… I’ve gotta log off now… at some point, gonna grab some dinner and then head out to a writer’s meeting–and those NEVER end when we think. Sooo… I don’t know if I’ll get back on here tonight. But I truly want to thank everyone for the fabulous questions, all the love, and a fun afternoon :)

    BIG PHILLY HUG, Leslie!

PS: (Carol–did I get your all answered? I’ve always been interested in vampires and recommended books I like are above in those loooong answers, smile. But I’m a vamp movie buff–start with anything on the screen, like Dark Shadows with Barnabus collins, the Lost Boys, Salem’s Lot, OMG, you name it–if it’s vamp, I’ve seen it, LOL!)

I subscribe to the BBB newsletter, email, facebook and twitter.
    RSVP’d.

Hi LA…Wow, you are without a doubt one of my best authors. I find it difficult to put down any of your “dark delights”!! With any and every person within a stones’ throw (I love that phrase) away engaging in anything vampish, do you find it harder to keep your works unique and surprisingly fresh? Thanks for coming and all the enjoyment…much love.

    RSVP’d and belong to BBB.
I’m a children’s librarian and heard last year about VHL. I ordered it and it sat in a box in my office. When Thirteenth came out I bought it and figured I had to do something. My dilemma was where to put them. When I ordered them, the article I’d read classified them as YA (11th and 12th graders. I work in a very conservative area of the South and really couldn’t see them in the YA section here, I had intended to put them there, but after reading bits and pieces of a few books (want to sit down and read the whole thing, but not enough time) decided there would be too many problems if I did. I catalogued them today and put them in the adult section. My biggest concern was the 4th and 5th graders that have been checking out the YA section lately. I just hope they don’t get stolen too soon. Only one other library in our region has this series and six books are missing.
You put a lot of research in them and it shows. The discussion questions are good. I’ll just have to direct my older teens to the adult shelves for VHL. I had heard you had a curriculum guide for the series. Is that true?

I was just wondering why you picked the name Damali? Was it just the sound/shape or the meaning? I have seen so many differnt meanings for the name from Beautiful Vision to Young Calf. It has always been a name that I liked.

Saw your comment about your first book “Sundance” and managed to snag a copy from a site. Can’t wait to read it. I enjoyed reading the VHL series and thought I would read this earlier book of yours.

    “Vampire Huntress Legends 101
Many educators today are looking for creative ways to inspire their students to read–especially to get them to read literature that has a positive underlying message which promotes the core values of: “do the right thing,” diversity and tolerance, and thinking of the larger world community, while also asking students to think about “choices and consequences” of their actions.” Ms. DaVinci was requested to design this guide after we received numerous requests from educators nationwide who wanted to know how to harness the fantastic positive energy young people had as avid fans of the series. Given that the Major Themes in the VHL legend were in alignment with those themes many educators wanted to promote, these educators told us that they were also looking for ways to standardize a teaching methodology around the body of literature.”

After seeing this on your site, I as a parent have got to thank you. Growing up I read anything that wasn’t nailed down and would have loved to have had the choices that you and other writers are giving to young readers. The YA books are exciting enough for adults to enjoy but have that hook that will pull YA’s in and help them develop a reading habit that will be with them for a lifetime. While I loved the “Nancy Drew” mysteries, I would have been in hog heaven to have had the VHL series available.(probably wouldn’t have got much other school work done but hey a good book is just what a teen needs to step back and get away from it all for a few hours) Again, thank you for your brilliant story telling ability and being willing to share it with those of us that can only curl up in that hammock and disappear for a few hours and come back healed and willing to fight another day.

LOVE the VHL!!! Just wanted to know if you plan on continuing the series from a different perspective? I know that there is a graphic novel coming out soon…is it going to pick up where the Thirteenth left off? Also, how many novels do you plan for the Crimson Moon series? :)

    Hey Leslie,

YOu know I love you and I am still missing my man Carlos. Still trying to find him in real life LOL. But I do have a question that I hae been meaning to get around asking you. Have you ever considered a paranormal romance. I know the series you have now all have a touch of romance but have you ever considered one that would be considered a romance or if there is one where can I get it like yesterday.

It’s great to learn about you, and for taking the time to answer our questions. I can’t wait to read the Vampire Huntress series now!!! Oh, and I bet you watch True Blood…….
