Release Party, Chat and Kindle 2 Contest with Author Rachel Vincent
Hey guys, and Rachel S., thanks for having me over here at Bitten By Books. As you all probably (hopefully) know, I’m celebrating the release of Prey, the fourth book in my Shifters series, and, I think, the best of them so far.
I’ve written a bit on my blog about how difficult Prey was to write, and because of that, I consider it a personal triumph. Prey is the only one of my books so far to require a major plot revision, and that took a lot of time, a lot of work, and piled on a lot of stress. And aside from the plotline, the character arcs in this one (which didn’t change in the rewrites) were emotionally exhausting. Faythe and her friends and family are going through a truly tough period in Prey, and it was as hard on me as it was on them.
But the work was totally worth it. So far, Prey is getting the best reviews of any of the previous Shifters books, and I’m so very proud of how it turned out. I hope you all like it. And…one lucky winner with have the chance to read Prey (and just about anything else) on a brand new Kindle 2. Ten second prize winners will receive signed copies of Prey.
So, good luck to you all!
Rachel Vincent

No need to enter me. Rachel, I’m behind on my reading, but you’re one of the authors I mention when I talk to readers at book signings. And I hear wonderful things about PREY! Congratulations!!

i’m curious how you began writing… was it something you always knew you wanted to do or was it a spontaneous decision? what were your experiences when you first started writing?
Hi Rachel,
I am a big fan of your Shifters series. I can’t wait to read Prey!
Faythe is such interesting character. What made you decide to make tabbies so rare in your world?
You do such a great job making you characters seem “cat like”. Do you have cats of your own?
Thanks, Toni

Hi Rachel.
Congrats on the new book, I have another new author to add to my book reading.
Out of all of your characters which one is your favorite?
Hey Rachel!! Jessica S. here. I already follow your blog, get the newsletter, and am a member of the discussion board The Pride.
I am sooo looking forward to Prey, waiting to hear from a store to see if they have an early copy. Dying to know what happens. Loved the ending of Pride, while it left me wanting to read Prey asap it was still a fabulous read. Looking forward to the Soul Screamers series as well. Couldn’t resist temptation enough to pass up reading the excerpt of Ch 1, of course now I’m dying to read that as well!
I was wondering after your Shifters series with Faythe is done, would you return to her world again but with the p.o.v. from a different character? One that we’ve seen before or have yet to seen like Kaci or Manx?
Of course those might be examples that are hard to answer to since we still have 3 more books to read! But is short sum: Would you return to the Shifter/Werecat world but focusing on another character as a series?
Also, I know you said you have 3 Soul Screamers books so far, but is that all there will be? Or will that series go farther?
Answer what you can without giving us too much info that you can’t divulge to us just yet!
*More excited about winning a copy of Prey than the Kindle, just to say!
Hi Rachel. I love your werecats series. Do you have any other books not in this series in the works? Another series maybe? Or like a lot of paranormal authors are you going to start a YA series too?
Rachel,
I love your books, and I already received my copy of Prey from Amazon.com.
I am curious about your thoughts on the “deep south,” as you are a recent transplant. I live in coastal Mississippi now and grew up in Alabama, but lived in Philadelphia, PA for three years - it was quite a culture shock for me.
Please, keep writing!
Stacey
I also RSVP’s last week.
Hi Rachel - your book Stray was my introduction to Urban Fantasy/Paranormal books (thank you!!!). My question is have you ever, or do you think you will ever, write a book in a different genre?
Thanks for your great stories!! Kim V.
Hi Rachel,I RSVP’d and here I am! we are already FB friends, and I posted the link to this interview contest on my profile here: http://www.facebook.com/lasergirl70
Can’t wait to start reading the series and will probably be picking them up today. Since I have yet to read them, I will ask you this: which was harder, writing the werecat series, or your YA book? Thanks! Lisa
Hi Rachel,
I just want to let you know I love your shifter series. One question where did you come up with the idea for your shifter series? Pleasee keep up the awesome work. Looking forward to reading prey, considering I have read and own Stray, Rouge and Pride.
I have you as a friend on myspace.
Hi Rachel,
I just want to say that I am glad I RSVP’ed for your event. It sure is getting full. Congrats.
I love your Shifter books but was wondering if you write in any other genre or under a different name for other genres? It will give me more of your writings to love if so.
Best to you on your day and thanks for entering me in your contests.

Elaine,
“My question is if the Shifter series was made into a TV series who would you like to see play Faythe,Marc,Jace and Ethan?”
Um… Wow, that’s hard. Since I saw Transformers (the first) I’ve kind of been picturing Megan Fox as Faythe, but I don’t think she does TV. As for the boys, they’re hard to peg! I’m not sure anyone could live up to them in my head. Suggestions?
Mariah,
“My question is how did you come up with the idea for soul screamers??”
Well, I knew I wanted to write something for teenagers, and I didn’t want to just rehash what was already out there. No vamps, witches, ghosts, and not even any of my beloved shapeshifters.
So I dug into some research and decided there hadn’t been enough written about bean sidhes (banshees). I wound up adding quite a bit to the existing lore, and really making them my own. I hope you like them!
Tamara,
“I would like to know how you got interested in writing paranormal books and how you come up with your ideas?”
Well, I’ve been reading paranormal (beginning with horror) most of my life, so when I decided I wanted to write, urban fantasy (though it wasn’t called that yet) seemed natural. As for my ideas, they’re born of research and imagination. The hard way. Though every now and then, something I see or hear will spark an idea, as with the storylines in Shift and My Soul to Save.
Hi Rachel,
I was wondering if you do school visits? I am a high school librarian and the kids really love your books and can’t wait for your new series to come out.
9. added you as my friend in FB, joined your FB fan group, already a member of your forum, RSVPed on your blog,

Hi I love your books. My question is What is your mosted hated genre? I know I personally hate military histories.
Hello I’m a Rsvp!
also completed 5,7,9 on entry chances:follow rachel, subscribe to newsletter and bitten by books newsletter.
I know rachel had to do a plot revesion for prey and wanted to know if any actions from that change resulted in a character’s status changing like life and death status? looking forward to it. Thanks Kai Charles
Hi Rachel,
I read your shifter series in one weekend - couldn’t put it down and can’t wait for PREY. My question: who is your favorite author (besides yourself of course
)?
I’m a BBB subscriber, I RSVPed, http://www.blogger.com/profile/08925893910120731483
I’ve read Rogue! I have Stray in my to be read list.
My question, unless anyone else asked, if you could write any other genre what would it be?
And if you could write with any other famous writer be dead or alive who would it be?

Um… I hope it would be done well, with some really good special effects. But honestly, getting a series offer is pretty rare, and not something that’s even been mentioned, that I’ve heard.

Thank you! My werecat social structure was based loosely on lion pride structure, with the gender roles reversed. Lions have lots of female cats, but only one adult male (the Alpha) per group. That male changes; he’s run out by usurpers after a few years, but there’s typically only one at a time.
So, to raise the tension levels in my world, I reversed that.
And yes, I have two cats of my own. Kaci and Nyx. They’re both solid black, and Nyx is a manx.
Nancy, thank you!
Kate T. said,
“i’m curious how you began writing… was it something you always knew you wanted to do or was it a spontaneous decision? what were your experiences when you first started writing?”
I’ve been writing since I was five years old, though that first story was probably spontaneous.
I got serious about novel writing about five years ago, and haven’t looked back since.
Rocky Shields said,

My werecats have the normal human lifespan. Or at least they would, if they weren’t so prone to dying in fights.
Hi Rachel, Love your books. When you are done the shifter series are you planning another type of series or a spin off series of books? (not including your YA books).
I hope so I love your style of writing.

Rachel,
I love your shifters series! My question is what part of writing Prey most surprised you?
I’ve found that sometimes when i write, something will just flow but then not fit anyhere and i’ll have to put it aside, but then later on my subconscious brings it all back together and it works out perfectly. This is my excuse for never permanently trashing anything i write. I know you had a major rework on this book - did you have any pleasant surprises?
Thanks,

I’m new to your shifter series, I really like the premises of the books and look forward to reading them.
Thank you,

Hey Rachel,
You mentioned that you had written Marc’s back story while getting to know him. Right now he is kinda mysterious, which is probably part of the appeal to Faythe. Will you have this back story available soon in one of your “Shifter” books, cause we want to know him too?
Your Shifter series is one of the few that I have read as they came out, I typically wait and will start a series once there are several books out, this series has been the exception. Love it!!

Hi Rachel,
I have a regarding audio books, if yours are on audio. Do you have any say in who narrates. I just thought it would be strange to hear a voice that doesn’t make any sense in your books
Hi Rachel,
thanks for stopping by BBB, congrats on the release of Prey. Can’t wait to read it. I loved the other 3 in your shifter series. Faythe has gotten so much stronger in each book. Did you ever want to just give up on Prey, since it was so difficult for the revision? Glad you didn’t cuz i definitely need to know what’s next.
Rachel,
I am looking forward to your new book. I have the other 3 in the series and have enjoyed them very much.
My question is- Do you do all of your own research or do you have friends who will help you with it? I love to research things, but never seem to be able to find a stopping point,so it would be hard for me to do my own.

Hi Rachel,
Let’s see - I’ve subscribed to her newsletter - sent verification copy to bbb, I’ve RSVP’d and am here to ask questions, and I’ve invited others to come today, and I’m a memeber of The Pride - username - dragon.
My questions would be:
1. Does Faythe manage to teach anyone else to partial shift?
2. WIll you be releasing your getting to know Marc in either print form or e-form?
Tammy S.
I’m subscribed to BBB & The Blood Bank.
I love you Series. Can’t wait for Prey!
Who is your favorite character from your books?
Hope you have plans to continue this series.
SHIFTERS Qs:
1-”I know that I personally don’t agree with every decision Faythe has ever made. But I have to write about her, and what’s in line with her character, not what I would personally have done.” -RV
Is there a specific instance when you wish Faythe could have just held her tongue? OR done something differently?
2-What happens to the jewelry they wear when they shift? IF Faythe wore the ring, and she shifted, would it stay on her toe?
3-What is the prevailing reason Faythe won’t wear Marc’s ring?
4-Do Faythe’s characteristics reflect her mother’s or father’s?
5-Do we ever meet Ethan’s girl friend? Angela?
6-Can Stray’s have children, passing on the werecat gene?
7-How old was Jace when his father died?
8-Is there a possibility that more Prides can be formed and get a seat on the territorial council? With only 10, there is no tiebreaker. Can the lines be redrawn?
9-Why must Michael keep who he is a secret from his wife? Will he ever tell her? Isn’t it like living a lie? I know one of the capital crimes is exposure to a human, but why are spouses involved in this?
SOUL SCREAMER Qs:
10-Why is Kaylee a bean sidhe [banshee] instead of a banshee? Why did you chose “bean sidhe” terminology?
11-I just wikipedia-ed bean sidhe, and it says stuff like “they can only cry for 5 major Irish families” and some other myths. Do these apply to Kaylee?
12-Are we going to see more people with “abilities” in Kaylee’s world? Besides bean sidhes?
OTHER Qs:
-A different author I read has an agreement with her favorite local [indie] bookstore. People order her books from the store, and when she has time she goes in and signs them all before they are shipped out. Great way to boost the bookstores business and fans get a signed copy! Would you ever consider doing this?

Hi Rachel:
I can wait to get to read Prey. From what I have read about it, it sounds like it will be really good. I just wanted to know how many more books in this series you will be writing and if you have an idea of how you would like the series to end?
I RSVD*ed, bought Prey from Amazon, friends on Myspace with Rachel and Bitten by Books
Hi Rachel,
How did you decide to name your characters, are they after people you know, or do you just like the names?
I RSVP’d and I am a subscriber to the newsletter.
Kayla W.
My question for Rachel concerns film adaptations. Do you aspire to have your work translated into film or television? Whether yes or no, do you feel a deep enough connection to your work that you’d have trouble letting a director give their own interpretation of it?
OK gonna start out by saying welcome to BBB Rachel. I have been waiting for this interview and contest for a while.
I know you have a set number of books for Faythe’s (and Marcs) story but is there any possiblity to have Jace get his own story?
What was your reaction to the previous BBB contests last month when your characters had such a fantastic showing amongst all those long standing faves.!!!???
REview of Prey…. wow I can’t believe that Faythe could survive that long without Marc. He has always been there even when she didn’t want him to be. I am hoping that the two can pull through their troubles with the exile and the others trying to take over the South Central Pride
Review of Pride…. I am with the reviewer on this…. I held on to Pride until it was done. It was a one day read that was very intense with the tribunal and the little tabby dropped on their doorstep. Faythe pulled through by the skin of her teeth but it was Marc’s sacrifice that sealed the deal.
REview of Stray…. This one again was a captivating read. With everyone so protective of the tabbies it was great how you were able to show their ability to overcome when they were kidnapped and the betrayal from a close one.
Review of Rogue…Faythe was very strong when the information came that her former boyfriend may be the one stray that they are looking for. The reprocussions of their meeting will be felt by all for a while.
OK now for the contest portion

Hi there - I can’t win a Kindle as I’m in the UK but I’d love a copy of Prey. Talking of Kindles (and ebooks in general) what do you see the future of paper books to be?
Hey Rachel!
I cant wait for Prey! My question is, will Ryan continue to be in the cage for the next book too? Does the Pride still not know what to do with him?

I RSVPed and sent requests on facebook(Beth B.)
What type of music do you listen to in your spare time? Ok I was going to ask if Faythe and Marc will get back together in the end…
Hey Rachel,
My question is why did you decide to have Faythe’s love interest be a Stray instead of a Pride cat?
Can’t wait to get Prey and find out what happens next for them!

Hi Rachel,
You talk about Prey being hard to write, in part because the characters are suffering. I’ve heard some writers say that their job is to make their characters suffer. How do you feel about that philosophy?
Thanks!

Hi Rachel,
I’ve read the first 2 in the series (love it so far!) and have the 3rd on order. I did come to ask how many (if it’s already decided) would be in it, but I think a couple of people have already asked. I was also curious what you like to read in your spare time, and if there is a genre outside of what you write that you really enjoy (maybe feels less like “work?”)
-Bethany C.
RSVP’d and already subscribe- I think we’re already “friends” on myspace and facebook, but going to check…
How would you describe your books to a potential reader? (Someone who hasn’t read any of yours but others in the paranormal.)
If you could have a choice of TV or Movie to make the books into which one would you choose? Would you have well known people play them, new faces, or mix of both?

Hi Rachel!
Nice to see you here!
Thanks to you Rachel and Bitten By Books for this AWESOME contest!
Rachel,
What series did you find harder to write so far, The Shifters or Screamers?
Question 2:
I know that you said before that Prey was an emotionally hard book for you to write. I know that Shift hasn’t been a piece of cake either. How hard was it to rewrite the entire last chapter of Shift and did it turn out the way you intended it to afterward?
I can’t wait to read Prey and I love your work. You’ll always be one of my favorite authors!!

My question
Do you use things that happen in real life in your books? And along the same theme do you catch yourself saying oh that would work in a book on observing some behaviours around you when out and about?
Is People watching something you do?
Hi again!!! Since you’ve always been a paranormal fan, what’s your favorite para movie? Plus, do you watch those sci-fi B movies? Its a guilty pleasure for me because they are usually so bad, they’re funny.
Rachel, have you ever seen the movie “Cat People”? I flashed back on that the first time I read “Stray” and wondered if it’d been a source of inspiration to you.

I RSVP’d, and here I am. In looking over your website, Rachel, I was particularly intrigued with your YA series. I’ve always thought of banshees as being terrifying creatures, and I’m wondering what in the world your heroine looks like as a banshee? Rachel, I really love this series. But I must admit that in the first book, I wanted to slap Faythe a couple of times. However, one of the best things about this series is Faythe’s maturing.
Hey Rachel,
You mentioned that you had written Marc’s back story while getting to know him. Right now he is kinda mysterious, which is probably part of the appeal to Faythe. Will you have this back story available soon in one of your “Shifter” books, cause we want to know him too?
I enjoyed learning about you, Rachel, and your novels. You’ve received some wonderful reviews. KUDOS!
I’m curious, how long did it take you to write each of your novels–write and edit to the point they were ready to submit?
Did you do any kind of research for them? If so, what topics did you research?
I wish you the very best in success!

Hi Rachel! I just wanted to say that I’ve enjoyed the Shifter series so far (though I’m a little behind), and the YA series sounds great! What was the biggest thing you had to change in moving from writing adult novels to YA? Who are some of your heroes (writers or not)?
Thanks for stopping by!

Hi Rachel,
Thank you for being here and for answering the question about the reason for there being so few Tabbies. I come from a very large family with few females so with all of our Fathers, Brothers, Uncles, Cousins and other various males it sometimes feels the same as Faythe describes. I am the Faythe for our family. I have Independence and Authority issues.
I know there are a set number of books for the shifter series, at this time. Do you feel that will be enough to tell this whole story or will you try to extend it?
Where will you go from there? something based on character(s) alredy introduced in this Shifter series? or possibly a Shifter series base on a different type of animal?
Do you have any other plot bunnies stampeding over the rest demanding to be told that have nothing to do with anything you are currently writing?
Thank You, Koren
P.S. I RSVP’d
Hi Rachel =) Thank for stopping by! I haven’t read your books yet but they are the next I am buying, I’ve heard so much about your serie on bittenbybooks it seems great!
I read all of your answers but not everyone’s question so I hope mine wasn’t asked already. I was wondering what you think makes your serie different from other shifters serie? And would you classify My sould to take as another urban fantasy or horror?
Thank a lot!

Thanks so much for being here Rachel!! I’ve been dying to know…why werecats? Why not werewolves, werebirds, or other were? I’m stoked that you did cause I just adore cats and, personally, the idea of werewolves (unless there’s a huge twist) is kinda overdone. A second question I had was, how did you do your research and then apply it to your book?

my question: why is it that none of the younger, tech and medically savvy Pride members (i am thinking of the Doctor here, for one) explored gender - inheretance? Japan and other countries have IVF-type fertility treatments where you can choose the sex of your baby with a high (over80%) degree of accuracy - male sperm swim faster than female sperm, is the basic idea. and lots and lots of people around the world are doing sex-selection. so i would think that the Prides (especially those who have doctors and other medical people, like Fayth’s Pride,) would start at least looking into it.
also: i am going now to subscrie to newsletter here; that auto enters me again, yes?

Anyway, Rachel, I think you mentioned that there will be 5 Shifter books and I know you’ve started a new YA series, but what will you be working on for the adult side? Will you be staying in the paranormal sector or have you got something completely different in mind?
Tina Christopher

Hi Rachel and everyone else.
I’m waiting to read Prey and your new YA series. You have said Prey was hard to write, but is writing YA harder or easier, or just different? Were there certain topics you wanted to avoid when writing the YA?
Maybe it’s just me, but it seems a lot of people who were writing fiction aimed at adults are now exploring the YA section. Does it seem that way to you?
Reply to denlian: For me, if someone is going to write about medical or scientific issues they had better be backed by sound logical basis; which doesn’t need to be backed up by current knowledge, but the writer had better convey why what they’re writting is logical. (I have a B.S. so this is a real annoyance to me, it doesn’t have to be real, but it does have to logical)

Hi Rachel,
Would you rather your book(s) be scripted for a block-buster movie or a hit cable tv series?
Janet H…I rsvp’d, I’m a subscriber to BBB.
Thanks for stopping by Rachel! It’s great to see you here! Er, well, not literally, ya know.
I always wonder, with each author I get the chance to ask, what do you do if a plot point won’t come to you or if all of a sudden you hit a wall with your plot? It may never happen to you, but hey, thought I’d ask.

So great to have you here, Rachel! I RSVP’d
My question is: With the shifters series now the soul screamers series, what’s next? Do you have any ideas (aside from your already established series) that are just begging to be written? A novel or a short story?
Thanks for taking the time to be here. I’m a loyal Deadline Dames follower!
LisaMarie!
As i have never read any of your books but so intend to since you posted the lineup to read..they sound very interestng..I did rsvp yesterday..
Congratulations to you on your release! I enjoyed browsing around your site and reading more about your books.
My question is:
What is the one thing you’ve always wanted to do, but never had the courage to try?
P.S. I posted my RSVP yesterday and am subscribed.
Heather C wrote,
How many books do you have planned for the Shifters series? Are their any other stories you are eager to get started on?
There will be six books, total, from Faythe’s story. After that, it really depends on reader demand and publisher interest. I might be willing to write a couple of stand alone novels in the same world, from other characters’ perspectives, if there was enough interest. But Faythe’s story ends with Alpha, book six.
Char wrote,
Aside from faythe, who is your favorite character in the series? I RSVP’d the other day.
That depends on what scene I’m writing at the time. But Jace and Ethan never fail to make me smile.
Beet wrote,
What question do you wish your readers would ask?
Um… I actually get a lot of questions, so I can’t really think of anything I’ve never been asked right now. Though you guys are doing a good job of it.
Brit wrote,
This is probably a strange question but have you ever awoken from a great dream and thought I just have to put this in a book?
That happened once. Unfortunately, I didn’t write it down, and when morning came, I could no longer remember my brilliant idea.
Jackie U wrote,
Did it surprise you that romance addicts are such fans of your book?
It did at first, but I think that’s awesome. Romance isn’t the focus of my books, but there is a strong romantic subplot in each of them, so I like to think there’s something in the series for just about everyone.
MonieG wrote,
My question is How many books are planned for the Shifters and Soul Screamers series?
Right now, there are six Shifters books planned, and all but the last are written. I’ve written all three contracted Soul Screamers books, and I’d really love the chance to do four more. I hope you like them!
Hi I rsvp’d the other day. My question was where did you get the ideas for the size and coloring of your werects.
Hi! I RSVP’ed when asked to last week!
I have a couple of questions for Rachel:
1. What was the first spark you had for writing Stray, and when you came up with the idea, did you have a series in mind from the beginning?
2. If you were a book, what would your blurb be?
I follow BBB at Twitter: sandymattgtbtu; MySpace: sandyslitehouse and sandywritesromance; facebook: sandra marlow
I added the link and graphic to my Facebook Wall; placed the link on both my MySpace pages, as well as a bulletin at both of those pages.

Rachel, who’re your favourite (main and supporting) characters within the genre?
I love Kim Harrison’s Jenks, and Jeaniene Frost’s Bones. And I think my favorite lead character would be Vicki Pettersson’s Joanna Archer. She’s strong, but very sympathetic.
Bridget H. wrote,
I was wondering, if you could trade lives with anyone in the world, past or present, who would it be? What would you do?
Oh, Bridget, right now I’m very happy with my own life, and feeling very grateful. I get to do what I love for a living, and right now I wouldn’t trade places with anyone else in the world.
Ann marie b wrote,
Out of all of your characters which one is your favorite?
Again, that depends on whose scene I’m writing at any given time. I love Tod, from my Soul Screamers series, and Ethan and Jace keep me entertained as well.

Would you return to the Shifter/Werecat world but focusing on another character as a series? Also, I know you said you have 3 Soul Screamers books so far, but is that all there will be? Or will that series go farther?
Hey Jessica,
I might be willing to write Shifters books about someone else, if there’s enough demand after the original series ends. As for the Soul Screamers books, I’d love to do 3 or 4 more, after these original 3. But that all depends on how well they’re received.
Cindi wrote,
Do you have any other books not in this series in the works? Another series maybe? Or like a lot of paranormal authors are you going to start a YA series too?
Actually, I have a YA series debuting on August 1. The series is called Soul Screamers, and the first book’s title is MY SOUL TO TAKE. It’s about a teenage bean sidhe (banshee). I also have another couple of adult ideas floating around, so we’ll just have to see where those go from here.
Stacey M. wrote,
I am curious about your thoughts on the “deep south,” as you are a recent transplant. I live in coastal Mississippi now and grew up in Alabama, but lived in Philadelphia, PA for three years - it was quite a culture shock for me.
I was born in Oklahoma, but I actually grew up all over the south before moving back to Oklahoma during college. So in some ways, my recent move to LA is like going back home. But it has been a bit of a culture shock, because I spent 11 years near Oklahoma City. By comparison, everything here seems to move very, very slooooly.
Hey Rachel!!! It’s great to have you here at BBB. I was able to pick up ‘Prey’ today at my local book store. I’m a member of you discussion group, and you’ve done an amazing job answering all of our questions. I’ve thought long and hard about this one so here it goes:
Q: How has the internet fandom impacted you as a writer and your career? Positives and Negitives??(ie…book sales, getting the word out about your series, fan support, pirated eBooks)
I just thought this was a very fitting question.

Here’s my question: I know that as a writer you must have an incredible imagination, but is there a secret (or not so secret) place in your head/heart that truly believes in the paranormal?
I did try and ‘friend’ you on MySpace, but it said that a person had to be someone you knew so requested that I enter your email address. I couldn’t, so didn’t.
I did, however, join your group on Facebook and sent a friends’ request there as well.

Rachel, what was your inspiration for the Shifter series? What motivated you to write on this topic?
Thanks!
Lisa H
A few other writers in the genre have released their books as graphic novels - do you ever see the shifter series being released in this format?
Would you want that?
What paranormal creature would you most like to be?
If you could go back in time, what year would you go back to?

Congratulations on your release! I enjoyed browsing around your site and reading more about your books.
My questions is:
What is the one thing you’ve always wanted to do, but never had the courage to try?
P.S. I posted my RSVP and am a subscriber.
Howdy there,
So, here’s my question: AFter Prey, there are only two Faythe books left, aside from your Soul Screamer series, what other plans have you for your post-Shifters future?
So, already friend of BBB and Rachel on Twitter/signed up to newsletters/discussion boards.

Hi Rachel I RSVPed yesterday…
My question is how do you develope your characters? Do they just come to you, like have their own voice inside of you, or do you outline them, molding them to what you need for the story?
rsvped yesterday
Rachel, are there going to be more shifter books in the future??
Renee B.
You once mentioned that your first novel (unpublished) was in a different genre. Have you ever considered revisiting it with your current experience and seeing if it will sell now?
Hello Rachel,
Thanks for having such a great contest and giving us the opportunity to know you better. Do you ever get tired of promoting your work? Would you rather be writing than promoting? Have a great day.

Kim Vargo wrote,
My question is have you ever, or do you think you will ever, write a book in a different genre?
I haven’t written out side of urban fantasy/paranormal romance since college, when I wrote short stories. Right now, my heart is in urban fantasy, and I don’t see that changing any time soon. But I never say never.
Lisa M wrote,
Since I have yet to read them, I will ask you this: which was harder, writing the werecat series, or your YA book?
That’s really hard to answer. Writing is hard. Period. It’s a lot of work. I had good days and bad days on both series. The YAs typically flow a bit faster than the Shifters books, both because they’re shorter and because right now they’re new and shiny, whereas I’m trying to wrap up all the loose plot threads from an entire series in my Shifters books. But since I’m new to YA, those also needed quite a bit of tweaking in the rewrites. So… there you go.
Dawn wrote,
One question where did you come up with the idea for your shifter series?
Well, I knew I wanted to write urban fantasy, but I didn’t want to write vampires or werewolves, or witches, because I didn’t feel like I had much to add to such well-established mythologies. And I love cats, so writing cat shapeshifters seemed kind of natural.
Gayle Oreluk wrote,
I love your Shifter books but was wondering if you write in any other genre or under a different name for other genres?
Nope! Everything I have published is under my name.
Christy Turney wrote,
I was wondering if you do school visits? I am a high school librarian and the kids really love your books and can’t wait for your new series to come out.
I haven’t visited any high schools yet, because my YAs aren’t actually out yet. But I’m not opposed to the idea, so long as the school is within driving distance from where I live, or from somewhere else I’m going to be.
chris swan wrote,
My question is What is your mosted hated genre? I know I personally hate military histories.
Um… I can’t say I hate any particular genre, because for me, the quality of the story and the writing is what counts, regardless of genre. But I will say that I don’t read much non-fiction. I like my books to contain stories.
Kai charles wrote,
I know rachel had to do a plot revision for prey and wanted to know if any actions from that change resulted in a character’s status changing like life and death status?
Hey Kai! Did my revision for Prey wind up saving or killing any of the characters? No. Though it did change how a few of the characters came by their injuries.
I RSVP’d and i’m here
3.so how many books are going to be in this series?

Hi Rachel!!! I can’t wait to read Prey…I have been hooked since Stray.
What can you tell us about your Screamer series to get our mouths salavating?
Kersty I wrote
My question: who is your favorite author (besides yourself of course)?
Ha! I actually am nowhere near my own favorite writer. In fact, it’s hard for me to go back and read stuff I’ve written, because I inevitably find flaws, or at least things I’d like to change.
My very favorite writer is Stephen King. It’s no big secret that I am a huge nerd of a Stephen King fan. I grew up reading his stuff, and to this day, his books are among the few that I can get lost in, without seeing things like pacing and mechanics.
Raonaid Luckwell wrote,
My question, unless anyone else asked, if you could write any other genre what would it be?
And if you could write with any other famous writer be dead or alive who would it be?
Well, I like to think I could write in just about any other genre out there. Though I’m not sure I’m quite smart enough to pull off Sci-Fi or true mysteries. But at this point, I don’t really want to write anything else. My heart is in urban fantasy.
And I’m not sure I want to co-write something. I’m a bit of a control freak about my work (I can take a critique, but the story must be mine, ALL MINE!), and if I wrote with someone famous, I’d always be worried that it only sold because it was half-written by Stephen King. Er… someone else.
Teresa wrote,
My questions are more personal, Did you always want to be a writer? And what was the greatest moment you’ve experienced as a writer?
Yes, I always wanted to be a writer, but I didn’t think I could actually making a living by writing until I gave it a shot, in my mid-20s. And so far, my greatest moment was when my agent told me that Stray, the first novel I tried to sell, was going to auction. Not only did A publisher want it–4 of them wanted it. Best feeling in the world. Validation. Even a tiny bit of confidence.
Sharon S. wrote,
When you are done the shifter series are you planning another type of series or a spin off series of books? (not including your YA books).
I hope so I love your style of writing.
Well, I have a couple of ideas floating around in my head, both for a spin-off (of stand alone novels) of my Shifters series, and for something new. But I’m not sure exactly what’s going to happen with either one just yet. And thank you!
Axisor wrote,
as a Twitter stalker, after the 6th book, will there be more shifter books–just prequels or centered around other characters? or have you not thought that far ahead?
I’m really not sure what’s coming after the Shifters books (other than my YA series), but I would like to continue to write both YA and adult.
Carmen_R wrote,
I was wonder how many more books will be in the series.
There will be six, total. SHIFT comes out in March of 2010, and right now, ALPHA is scheduled for fall of that same year, though that could change.
Rose W wrote,
My question is what part of writing Prey most surprised you?[…] I know you had a major rework on this book - did you have any pleasant surprises?
Yes, there were pleasant surprises. The emotional depth. After the rewrite, when I was reading through for the edits, I was, frankly, stunned with a particular section, and the depth of Faythe’s pain and anger. I really feel like I got that part right. Thank goodness.
Medievalgrrl wrote,
What drew you to and made you decide to write about shapeshifters as opposed to other paranormal species?
When I started Stray, the most popular paranormal creatures were vampires and werewolves, though witches seemed to be making a strong showing. I wasn’t sure I had much to add to those particular parts of the genre, and I wanted to go with something different. So I made up a species of cat shifters and started building their world. Faythe and crew have been a big part of my life ever since.
Hi Rachel. I picked up your first book out of curiosity (yeah I know) and got hooked on your characters. Its such a different world of shifters. Did it take you a long time to build that whole world, and did you do it all at once (the world building)or did you create bits and pieces as you went along? I have the ebooks of Stray, Rogue and Pride, will be getting Prey soon as I can.

Rachel, why cats instead of wolves?
Because I didn’t have anything noteworthy to add to the existing werewolf mythology. And I’m really more of a cat person.
Julie Trevelyan wrote,
Question: Do you write in linear fashion, chapter one straight through to “the end,” or do you skip around and write different chapters and scenes until you finish?
Yes, I’m a totally linear writer, and a die-hard plotter. I just am.
Courtney H wrote,
My question is, how do you go about coming up the characteristics and demeanor of your characters?
There’s a kind of “getting to know you” period with each character. Sometimes it’s as easy as finding out what they look like, what they wear, how they speak, and what their drink of choice is. Sometimes (like with Marc) it’s a little more complicated. But in the end, each character is his or her own person. Or, at least, they should be. And it might help to find out where and how your characters were raised. Childhood (whether we remember it fondly or try to forget it) plays a big part in who we grow up to be.
FantasyDreamer wrote,
I was wondering, do you think your writing helps you grow personally in your everyday life?
Well, I don’t know if my actual writing helps me grow personally, but writing for a living does. Deadlines are no joke. And surely if I can meet deadline after deadline, I can remember to pay my studen loans, right?
Lisa Richards wrote,
You mentioned that you had written Marc’s back story while getting to know him. Right now he is kinda mysterious, which is probably part of the appeal to Faythe. Will you have this back story available soon in one of your “Shifter” books, cause we want to know him too?
Um… Maybe. No promises, though. I’m kind of pressed for time right now.
Linda AK wrote,
I have a regarding audio books, if yours are on audio. Do you have any say in who narrates. I just thought it would be strange to hear a voice that doesn’t make any sense in your books.
No, I’m actually not involved in that part of the process, and it was a little weird, at first, to hear Faythe sound like someone I’ve never heard before.
Lorraine Minich wrote,
Did you ever want to just give up on Prey, since it was so difficult for the revision?
No! I actually have a really hard time giving up on anything. I’m a fanatic finisher. In fact, I don’t have any unfinished manuscripts. At all. And I always had that final vision for Prey in my head. The key was making the actual book match that vision.
Janice D. wrote,
My question is- Do you do all of your own research or do you have friends who will help you with it?
I do all my own research, though I do have friends I can go to if I need help or advice. I also do all my own promo, answer my own email, and moderate my own discussion group. For now. But I seem to have less and less time every day, so we’ll have to see how that goes…
Tammy wrote,
Does Faythe manage to teach anyone else to partial shift?
Yes, in Prey you’ll hear about a couple of others who have managed a partial-Shift.
Okay, I’ll be back online tomorrow answering some more questions! For now…work calls!
Oh!! And I RSVPed the other day!
Forgot I was suppposed to say that…

Tell us which is your favorite book or character and why you feel you deserve to win a Kindle 2 from her. Keep it family friendly. Come back here and post the link to your video. Good for 150 entries. Max 1 video per day good towards entries
i can’t make video as i don’t have a camcorder and i’ve not read any of your books yet. but i deserved a kindle 2 so a can read at night without it hurting my back more. also i am starting to get cateracts (they won’t do anything about them until they get bad) so when my eyes get tired and/or my vision gets weaker, i can still keep up with lovely books AND i can make the print large enough to see when i need too.

Hi! I have to agree with Heather Long that the series doesn’t go to TV as I don’t think it would do the books justice. I get a lot out of reading your books and everytime I read them again, I find something else that I din’t get the first time around.
My question, if it hasnt been asked already, where do you get your ideas from? The Shifter series has something different in each book and is so addictive that I end up reading each book at least 3 times.
Many Thanks for all your wonderful work. Siobháin

Rachel, are any of your characters inspired by real people - whether someone you know, or a celebrity?
I’m a friend of BBB on FB, part of the Blood Bank, just sent an FB friend request to Rachel.
Best of luck with your release - sounds great!
Hi Rachel,
Which comes first - character or plot?
Thanks.
Rachel,
Before writing full time (that is assuming that you are writing full time and not masquerading during the day as an office assistant or something), how did you make time to write?
Thanks,
Jerry W. Stewart
i rsvp’d, joined the facebook group, joined the bbb newsletter mailing list.
i have never read any of your books, but i am going to….
its nice to see a variation on the were/shifter front. so my question is did you choose werecats straight away or did you have another type of shifter to use before you decided?
Thank you for taking the time to answer questions, Rachel.
You’re an awesome author. (Alliterations are awesome as well.)
1. As a writer, I’ve tried writing songs, didn’t work, and poems, did work; have you ever written poems or song? Or even movie scripts? (I have, just for fun. I prefer novel writing.)
2. What’s your favorite historical period and who’s your favorite person from that same period? Mine’s the Second World War, and, of course, Anne Frank.

Who is your favorite character from your books?
The status of my favorite character changes almost daily, depending on what I’m writing at the time. But Jace and Ethan remain near the top, and I love writing Tod, from my Soul Screamers series.
Aly Anz wrote,
SHIFTERS Qs:
Is there a specific instance when you wish Faythe could have just held her tongue? OR done something differently?
No, not really. I hope I wouldn’t have made all the same decisions Faythe made in the first couple of books, but if she hadn’t made them, she couldn’t have learned from them. Faythe is who and what she is today (in Prey) because of what she went through in the previous books, and how she handled everything I threw at her.
What happens to the jewelry they wear when they shift? IF Faythe wore the ring, and she shifted, would it stay on her toe?
I seriously doubt it. Which is why she doesn’t wear much jewelry. Oddly enough, she only has a bellybutton ring because the art department gave her one on the cover, and I was politely asked to write it into the story.
What is the prevailing reason Faythe won’t wear Marc’s ring?
Faythe doesn’t want to wear the ring because she doesn’t want to get married. She loves Marc (there’s no question about that), but doesn’t understand why everyone else seems to think that means they should get married. She’s not insensitive to his wants or feelings. But if she ever marries him, it’ll be to make him happy, not to make herself happy. She’s happy with him (and committed to him) as their relationship currently stands.
Do Faythe’s characteristics reflect her mother’s or father’s?
Both.
Do we ever meet Ethan’s girl friend? Angela?
Probably. I’m waiting on my editor’s opinion on that one…
Can Stray’s have children, passing on the werecat gene?
Yes, because they all have that same recessive gene Kaci got two of.
How old was Jace when his father died?
I believe he was three.
Is there a possibility that more Prides can be formed and get a seat on the territorial council? With only 10, there is no tiebreaker. Can the lines be redrawn?
That would be very difficult to do, because no one’s willing to give up territory to a new Alpha. In fact, it would more likely go the other way—one or more territories getting “absorbed” by a particularly strong Alpha. Which would anger most of the others.
Why must Michael keep who he is a secret from his wife? Will he ever tell her? Isn’t it like living a lie? I know one of the capital crimes is exposure to a human, but why are spouses involved in this?
Michael is the only Shifter (at least that we know of) who’s married to a human, so his case is a bit of an anomaly. Is he living a lie? Well, he’s definitely living a secret. But his love for his wife is no lie.
SOUL SCREAMER Qs:
Why is Kaylee a bean sidhe [banshee] instead of a banshee? Why did you chose “bean sidhe” terminology?
Because “bean sidhe” is the proper, original spelling. “Banshee” is an anglicized form, and not technically correct.
I just wikipedia-ed bean sidhe, and it says stuff like “they can only cry for 5 major Irish families” and some other myths. Do these apply to Kaylee?
Well, not sure if you noticed, but Kaylee’s last name is Cavanaugh—she’s from one of those 5 families. I’ve taken the existing bean sidhe lore and added to it for my own purposes. Some of the original “Facts” hold true in Kaylee’s world; some don’t. You’ll have to read the book for specifics.
Are we going to see more people with “abilities” in Kaylee’s world? Besides bean sidhes?
Yes. Definitely. But no vamps, shapeshifters, or witches.
Nothing “typical,” I hope.
OTHER Qs:
-A different author I read has an agreement with her favorite local [indie] bookstore. People order her books from the store, and when she has time she goes in and signs them all before they are shipped out. Great way to boost the bookstores business and fans get a signed copy! Would you ever consider doing this?
Yes, I certainly would, but I’m new to my area and haven’t had time yet to search out an indie bookstore.
Signed up on the Book Bank. User name is Nellie Batz.
Melissa K wrote,
I just wanted to know how many more books in this series you will be writing and if you have an idea of how you would like the series to end?
There will be six told from Faythe’s perspective. After that… who knows.
And yes, I know how it will end. Getting there is another matter entirely.
KWbookfanatic wrote,
How did you decide to name your characters, are they after people you know, or do you just like the names?
In the beginning, I used a baby name book, but now there are several websites I frequent for name ideas. I also read the credits at the end of movies. Often the crew members have great names!
Rabid Fox wrote,
Do you aspire to have your work translated into film or television? Whether yes or no, do you feel a deep enough connection to your work that you’d have trouble letting a director give their own interpretation of it?
Do I aspire to have a TV or movie deal? No. Would I turn one down? Probably not. Television would open my work up to a much wider audience than it has at the moment. But in the end, it’s all about the books and the stories they contain. And yes, I’m deeply connected to the characters. But I also understand that what works in a book isn’t always what works on screen. Compromises have to be made.
Shell the HOckeyvampiress wrote,
I know you have a set number of books for Faythe’s (and Marcs) story but is there any possiblity to have Jace get his own story?
What was your reaction to the previous BBB contests last month when your characters had such a fantastic showing amongst all those long standing faves.!!!???
Will Jace get his own story? That depends upon demand from readers and interest from publishers. So… maybe.
As for the BBB polls, I think they’re awesome, and was thrilled to even be included in the list with some of my personal favorite authors.

Hi Rachel, love your books. Can’t wait to read Prey.
My question is, you also write YA and you book Soul to Take is coming out soon, was is a difficult transition to go from writing adult UF to YA?
And what is it about YA that you like?
Hey Vivi! Thank you!
Was the transition from adult to YA difficult? Um…I wouldn’t say difficult, but there was definitely a transition period. Faythe and Kaylee are very different from one another, but that’s not all due to their ages. Faythe starts out kind of immature at 23, and Kaylee’s pretty mature for 16. But they’re different people, with different experiences, and different strengths and weaknesses. I think the hardest part of going back and forth is when I’m doing revisions on one or the other, then have to switch. That’s hard because revisions are where I fine-tune the voice, and I’m paranoid about personality inconsistencies, so jumping back and forth between them can be tricky.
What is it about YA that I like? The passion. Really, everything teenagers feel (be it danger, romance, jealousy, etc…) is consuming. Emotions are volatile. I remember being there, and it’s been so much fun (and slightly scary) to revisit those feelings.

I see that Prey is offered in Print but not on Kindle…. Since the others ARE on Kindle will this one be put in PRC format as well? *I hope so!*
Questions for Rachel -
Rachel, I adore the Shifter’s series. I also happen to be one of those who roots for the underdog… were you ever tempted to let the Faythe and Jace chemistry go further? In addition to that I don’t think I am alone in thinking a Jace spinoff would be wonderful
These seems like a silly question considering the contest, but will Prey be available for Kindle? I checked the amazon links and it is not up for preorder yet for kindle, so I thought I would double check.

How does it feel to have such an awesome series under your belt so to speak and another on the way with your YA books?

And I’m very excited about both series. You guys are so good for my confidence!
Bama wrote,
What type of music do you listen to in your spare time? Ok I was going to ask if Faythe and Marc will get back together in the end…
I listen to a bunch of different stuff. Everything from 80s power ballads and hair bands to Disturbed, NIN, Papa Roach, and Seether, to Pink. Anything that’s passionate and makes me feel something (anything) strongly. (I have the same requirements for pleasure reading. ;-))
Claire M wrote,
My question is why did you decide to have Faythe’s love interest be a Stray instead of a Pride cat?
That’s actually a really good question! There’s a lot of competition for Faythe’s heart, so I knew from the start that Marc needed to stand apart from the crowd. The best way I could think of to do that is to make him an outsider. Since he was raised as a human, the experiences that shaped him are different than any of the other Pride cats, and because he was orphaned and taken in by Faythe’s family, she’s known him for most her life, so she knows she can trust him.
Also, in the first two books, the bad guys are strays, and I didn’t want readers to think that all strays were bad. Marc is a very good guy, and he’s a stray, so the possibilities should be there in the readers’ minds from the beginning. Make sense?
Geri, Elise K., and Connie B each asked variations of:
Have you considered yet if you will continue with your shifters? Werecats? Maybe with another main couple?
There are six books in Faythe’s story. After Prey, there will be SHIFT and ALPHA. As for more books in that world… well, anything’s possible, but there are no definite plans for that right now.
Hi Rachel!
Welcome to bittenbybooks.com! I was soo excited about this book. And now I’m waiting on the edge of my seat for the next one! AUGH!
If this question has been asked already, I apologize, but why did you decide on one word titles for this series? Also, do you have any spin off or stand alones planned for the shifter series?
Thank you for stopping by!
(PG-Facebook shared, friends with BBB everywhere (on blogroll, etc), friends with Rachel V almost everywhere (LJ, Twitter, facebook, fan page), also I think I RSVP’d for this event
THANKS!)
just curious… on average, how long does it take you to write a novel? i know that may be a loaded question based on how you answer it, so answer it however you wish.
Cheryl M wrote,
Do you like fan fiction?
I’ve honestly never read any fan fiction.
Daune wrote,
Did you ever think your books would be so popular?
I certainly hoped that my stories would find an audience, but nothing is certain in publishing (or in anything else, I guess), so I’m really grateful to have so many wonderful readers.
Stacey wrote,
My question is–Will there be a new “were-panther” who comes into the mix to shake things up and conflict Faith even more than she already is over Marc?
Oooh, now you guys want spoilers! You’ll have to keep reading for the answer to that one.
Elie wrote,
I have two questions for you…
1. How much creative input do you have on your book covers? (This is something I would pick up, they look modern but not too sexy)
2. If you hadn’t become a writer, what career path would you have chosen?
1. My publisher has a cover art fact worksheet for the authors to fill out. We answer questions about the characters, plot, and themes. Stuff like that. But the decisions are ultimately up to the people in marketing. I think.
2. I would probably still be teaching high school English.
annalisa wrote,
Do you ever think you would enjoy writing with another author? If you do, who would you choose to write with?
Um… I’m not sure. I kind of like being in control of my own worlds. But you never know…
Amanda L wrote,
I would like to know, what past events and other authors most inspired you?
Um… There wasn’t really one moment that made me want to be a writer. I’ve always loved writing, and I’ve been reading horror and fantasy since I was pretty young. So I think it was really just a matter of time before I got serious about wtiting. Though sometimes I do wish I’d started earlier.
Alana Abbott wrote,
You talk about Prey being hard to write, in part because the characters are suffering. I’ve heard some writers say that their job is to make their characters suffer. How do you feel about that philosophy?
I think my job is to tell a good story. However, if the characters have no problems, the author has no story, so I can kind of see where you’re coming from with that one.
Jennifer K wrote,
What are your thoughts on authors controlling their characters, vs characters controlling the story?
Well, in the beginning, the author creates the characters, but once you’ve done that, you have to be true to what you’ve created, or provide a reasonable reason for the characters to change. So I don’t think characters can truly control the story (at least, mine don’t) but if I’m not being true to either the characters or the story, they both seem to have no trouble letting me know it.
and by the way, thank you for taking the time to answer all of our questions, particularly with your insanely busy schedule. i know we all appreciate it, so thank you.
Bethany wrote,
I was also curious what you like to read in your spare time, and if there is a genre outside of what you write that you really enjoy (maybe feels less like “work?”)
I read a lot of urban fantasy, both adult and YA, and I read some contemporary YA. Outside of urban fantasy, I read mysteries and horror. I love Stephen King.
Tiffany wrote,
How would you describe your books to a potential reader? (Someone who hasn’t read any of yours but others in the paranormal.)
My Shifters books are urban fantasies about a female werecat enforcer named Faythe Sanders, who’s trying to carve more out of life for herself and her fellow tabbies than the role tradition says she’s supposed to have. And there’s lots of action.
Cassandra M. wrote,
If you could have a choice of TV or Movie to make the books into which one would you choose? Would you have well known people play them, new faces, or mix of both?
Um… I honestly don’t know! But if it were a movie, I think the bigger the name, the better, so long as the acting and effects are good. But on TV, I’d love to see some really good newcomers, who won’t bring any previous character associations with them to the roles.
Shelley aka spgirls wrote,
I know that you said before that Prey was an emotionally hard book for you to write. I know that Shift hasn’t been a piece of cake either. How hard was it to rewrite the entire last chapter of Shift and did it turn out the way you intended it to afterward?
Hey Shelley! I’ve already answered your first one once or twice, so Im going to start with the second one.
I didn’t really rewrite the last chapter of SHIFT. I rewrote something about 2/3 of the way through the book, which trickled down through everything else. But the last couple of chapters didn’t change much in that process.
Unless you mean the epilogue. I dropped that one entirely.
EmmaD wrote,
Do you use things that happen in real life in your books? And along the same theme do you catch yourself saying oh that would work in a book on observing some behaviours around you when out and about?
Is People watching something you do?
I actually have used a couple of small things from real life in my books. There’s a scene in the second Soul Screamers book where Kaylee’s dad makes lasagna, but forgets to take the wax paper off the cheese, so they’re picking it out of every bite at the table. That actually happened to my best friend, and she said I could use it in the book.
And yes, I watch people. That’s the best way I know of to find habits and characteristics for your characters.
Heather C wrote,

Right now, I’d have to say Pan’s Labyrinth. I’m a huge fan of Guillermo del Toro.
And yes, I do watch B movies! I loved Lake Placid, and there was this old one about a guy who turns into a giant snake. And a bunch of others that come on late at night, when I should be

Rachel, have you ever seen the movie “Cat People”? I flashed back on that the first time I read “Stray” and wondered if it’d been a source of inspiration to you.
Oddly enough, I haven’t seen that one. I just looked it up on IMDB. May have to give that one a try.
Susan Blexrud wrote,
I’ve always thought of banshees as being terrifying creatures, and I’m wondering what in the world your heroine looks like as a banshee? All I can picture is the death eaters from Harry Potter, and I’m sure she doesn’t look like that.
Kaylee looks like a normal sixteen year old. I can’t see how she’d fit into high school any other way.
However, over the course of the series, she sees and deals with a bunch of much scarier-looking things. I hope you like the books!
is there any other genre you would like to try?
do you worry that when the end of the series comes that people will be upset as you move on?
I see alot of potential for off shoots of the series, and as they are “not in the works” right now I can only hope that something may come of it. And I really enjoyed My Soul To Take, I won a copy! My teen is now reading it and is THRILLED! But my question is : If you do not have any foreseeable extensions beyond the 6 on the Pride’s series; do you have any idea of Adult based books? Or are you going to work more on your YA series?

Dianne wrote,
I was wondering if there are any up front costs that you paid to become published?
This is a great question, and one I wish more people would ask. Or research. I paid NOTHING up front to get published. Authors DO NOT pay either publishers or agents.
My only costs are my laptop (which I already had), the electricity it takes to run my laptop (which I already had), and the cost of printing my manuscript and mailing it to the agents who requested it. THAT’S IT. LITERALLY.
When an editor buys your manuscript, the publisher pays you. Not the other way around. Your agent gets a cut (15% is standard) of your advance and your royalties. But your agent doesn’t get paid until you do. Her cut comes off the top, but you don’t pay her out of pocket. Her (or his) money comes from what the publisher pays you. ALWAYS. If someone asks you for money to publish your book, RUN. Seriously.

Rachel can you tell us something about yourself that we don’t know and what are you currently reading?
Something you don’t already know… I wear contact lenses when I go out, and glasses when I’m at home. My vision is really bad. Worse than 20/800.
Right now I’m in the middle of North of Beautiful, Strange Angels, and Tithe, and I’m about to dig into an ARC of Beautiful Creatures.
Lisa Richards wrote,
You mentioned that you had written Marc’s back story while getting to know him. Right now he is kinda mysterious, which is probably part of the appeal to Faythe. Will you have this back story available soon in one of your “Shifter” books, cause we want to know him too?
Most of the back story I actually wrote went into STRAY. It talks about how he was infected and how his mother died. What I did during SHIFT was go back and reread that and kind of get to know Marc again. Like a reunion. I had to, so I could really nail his reaction to something important in SHIFT.

How long has your shortest book taken you to write and what was the longest?
And Cheryl Kaye Tardif wrote,
I’m curious, how long did it take you to write each of your novels–write and edit to the point they were ready to submit?
Did you do any kind of research for them? If so, what topics did you research?
The shortest book I’ve ever written was my YA debut, MY SOUL TO TAKE. It was 75,000 words, and was written in 5 weeks, working 5 days a week. With several days off for Christmas.
My longest book was the first one I ever wrote. It was 140,000+ words, written in six weeks. I never revised or submitted it.
Stray is about 125,000 words, and it was written in 8 weeks. Then it took me another 8 months or so to revise it, in a total of around 6 complete drafts. But I was also writing Rogue during that time period.
And yes, there was research. There’s always research. My first two books required weapons research. My Shifters books require a ton of research on trees and plants, as well as cat biology and behavioral patterns. My Soul Screamers books require a ton of folklore research, as well as some medical and a bunch of information on how highschools (classes and buildings and stuff) are structured, since I graduated waaaay back in 1996.
Kat D wrote,
How many hours a day do you spend writing?
I work from about 9 in the morning until I get the work done. Last night, that was actually 1:30 am. Some nights, I get done before dinner, and get to read or watch TV, or play Rock Band. This happens most often during a rough draft, when I have a set wordcount goal.
During release periods (tons of promo) and when I’m working on revisions, edits, or galleys, I tend to work longer hours.
But a lot of my work is online promotion. I answer all my own email (eventually), moderate my own discussion group, and post regularly on all 4 of my private blogs, and not-so-regularaly on 2 group blogs. Promo is a HUGE time committment. I’ve spent several hours a day this week here, answering your questions. And I still have to write 3000 words and hit two other Q&As before bed.
Lisa N. wrote,
What is next for you after all the Shifter books are out? Are you planning to concentrate on your YA series, spin-off the Shifters books, or is there another set of stories you have in mind?
I’d like to write more adult stuff as well as continuing with the YAs. I have a couple of adult ideas bouncing around, but nothing definite yet. I still have to write the last Shifters book, and that’s looking like a pretty big project right now.
Annette wrote,
Do you model you character after friends and family? If so, do they recognize themselves in your books?
No! Not on purpose, anyway. My family would be furious about seeing themselves in my books, even if I showed them in a positive light. Few people want their privacy violated like that. But certain characteristics and/or habits from people I know do show up in my characters. That’s hard to avoid, if you want to make them feel real. Things like knuckle popping, eye rolling, and the tendency to drop ‘ing endings, or speak in mixed metaphors.
Hi Rachel!
How long did it take you to find an agent? Were you scared going into the process?

Rachel, I have a question.
Did you start book 2 before you queried Book 1? Or did you state in your query that Stray could be part of a series and when did you have to show the next books to your agent, or how does that process go?
Thank you!

Hey Rachel!
Firstly, I’d like to say I’m astounded by your work - your creativity, originality and hilarity all hits home in each of your books.
My question is, If your #1 was (however odd it may be) was allergic to books, would you quit writing? Or would you desperately try to find an alternate solution for the best of both worlds? [I suppose this is where the Kindle 2 would come in!] hehe!
Hi Rachel!
Sorry for the delay in welcome! But WELCOME to Bitten By Books!!!
So my question for you, (I like to ask authors this) what would you do (and it can be ANYTHING) if you weren’t an author (though thankfully for us readers that’s not the case!)?
Hello Rachel,
My question is if Kaci Dillion and Kaylee Cavanaugh got in a fight, who would win? (My guess is Kaci would use her sharp claws while Kaylee ’screamed’ for her soul.) But since I haven’t read your YA series she may have some super power I don’t know.

Martina wrote,
Do you have favorite authors in these genres? If so, what are you “keepers”? Because you’re giving away a Kindle v2, I also wonder what your preferred reading format is: e-book, hardback, mass market paperback, etc?
I’ve actually already answered your first question, so I’m going straight to the second one here.
I don’t really have a favorite print format for books, and I’ve honestly never read an ebook. I will definitely try an ebook reader of some type, hopefully soon, but I want to try them out before buying, and I haven’t had the chance for that yet.
Jamie wrote,
1) What are you favorite books to read when you have down time?
2) What was your favorite book growing up?
I read a lot of urban fantasy and YA, both UF and contemporary. My favorite books in highschool were Swan Song, by Robert R. McCammon and The Stand, by Stephen King.
Jerry Stewart
I’m interested in the publishing world and the day to day grind of authors. I love to follow my favorites online through their tweets and blogs. Would you mind sharing with us a typical day in your writing life?
Um… I get up, eat breakfast, make coffee, feed the cats, scoop the litter, then sit down with my laptop on my lap. I start with email, blogging, and any promo currently on my plate. Unless I’m in the middle of a new release (as I am now), I try not to go past 10 a.m. with those preliminaries. Then I get down to the real work. If I’m working on a rough draft, I try to write 1,000 words before lunch. I don’t always make it. I either answer email or watch an episode of something from Netflix or my DVR. (Big Love, Carnivale, Heroes, Lost, Dollhouse) After lunch, I’m back at work until dinner. Then, if I haven’t met my goal, I work more after dinner. If I have met my goal, I’ll do more email or promo for an hour or two, then try to spend some time with #1.
I work very, very long hours, a minimum of six days a week. Seven, more often. There’s no leaving my work at the office. I live in my office. I live my work. Which is kind of sad, when you think about it.
Koren Cota, wrote,
I know there are a set number of books for the shifter series, at this time. Do you feel that will be enough to tell this whole story or will you try to extend it?
Six books is what Faythe’s story needs, and I won’t try to extend hers.
Do you have any other plot bunnies stampeding over the rest demanding to be told that have nothing to do with anything you are currently writing?
I have two unwritten ideas, one unrelated to anything else I have in print, one situated in my Soul Screamers world, but with none of the existing characters.
Cindy Bacon wrote,
I was wondering what you think makes your series different from other shifters serie? And would you classify My soul to take as another urban fantasy or horror?
I think the fact that my fictional world has only Shifters (no vamps, witches, demons, or any other kinds of creatures) lets me spend all of my wordcount (and time) exploring internal Shifter politics its effects on the character relationships.
Also, my characters have very strong family connections. Most of them have known each other all their respective lives, so their relationships are very complex.
Kristina C. wrote,
I’ve been dying to know…why werecats? Why not werewolves, werebirds, or other were? I’m stoked that you did cause I just adore cats and, personally, the idea of werewolves (unless there’s a huge twist) is kinda overdone. A second question I had was, how did you do your research and then apply it to your book?
Well, I think you’ve answered your first question yourself.
I didn’t have anything significant to add to werewolve lore. But werecats aren’t the only Shifters in the books. We saw a bruin in PRIDE, and we’ll see something else in SHIFT next year.
Karla wrote,
With such an amazing series under your belt do you ever feel like resting on your laurels, or are you driven to do more and more
Do I have laurels? Is resting on them really an option?
Seriously, though, thank you. I’m glad you think the books are amazing.
And no, I don’t rest very often. I’m actually very driven, and often have to remind myself (or let my agent and/or editor) remind me that I’m only human, and no one seems willing to bend that “24 hours in a day” rule just for me.

my question: why is it that none of the younger, tech and medically savvy Pride members (i am thinking of the Doctor here, for one) explored gender - inheritance? Japan and other countries have IVF-type fertility treatments where you can choose the sex of your baby with a high (over80%) degree of accuracy - male sperm swim faster than female sperm, is the basic idea. and lots and lots of people around the world are doing sex-selection. so i would think that the Prides (especially those who have doctors and other medical people, like Fayth’s Pride,) would start at least looking into it.
Actually, my guess would be that Dr. Carver (or, more likely, Dr. Eames) probably is looking into that. The problem is that neither of them have their own labs, so the genetics work/research they do is all after hours and off the clock. So things move slowly. Give them time.

Anyway, Rachel, I think you mentioned that there will be 5 Shifter books and I know you’ve started a new YA series, but what will you be working on for the adult side? Will you be staying in the paranormal sector or have you got something completely different in mind?
Similarly, LisaMarie wrote,
My question is: With the shifters series now the soul screamers series, what’s next? Do you have any ideas (aside from your already established series) that are just begging to be written? A novel or a short story?
There will actually be 6 Shifters books, and after that, I do have another idea for an adult series, but it’s not in development yet. I would love to write more YAs, but I’ll have to wait and see how these first 3 do, to judge the demand for more.
I also have two short stories coming out this year. The first is an ebook prequel to the Soul Screamers series, available for free download on July 1.
darchole wrote,
You have said Prey was hard to write, but is writing YA harder or easier, or just different? Were there certain topics you wanted to avoid when writing the YA?
Maybe it’s just me, but it seems a lot of people who were writing fiction aimed at adults are now exploring the YA section. Does it seem that way to you?
Writing is hard no matter what you write, if you’re truly doing your best. So I don’t think the YAs were necessarily harder or easier than my adult books, but they were certainly different. And yes, I do hear about a lot of adult writers now diving into YA. Myself included.
Janet H wrote,
Would you rather your book(s) be scripted for a block-buster movie or a hit cable tv series?
I honestly don’t know. Both possibilities seem so far fetched right now that’s it’s hard to answer questions like that.
Ashley wrote,
I always wonder, with each author I get the chance to ask, what do you do if a plot point won’t come to you or if all of a sudden you hit a wall with your plot? It may never happen to you, but hey, thought I’d ask.
Yes, that certainly does happen, and it can totally derail a book. I go out for fajitas, then power through the problem. I get out my white board and dry erase markers and start brainstorming. I’ll also plot aloud with either my husband or my CP.
Kammie wrote,
What is the one thing you’ve always wanted to do, but never had the courage to try?
I’ve always wanted to travel overseas somewhere (I have a few specifics in mind), but never have. But not because I lack the courage. I lack the time.

My question was where did you get the ideas for the size and coloring of your werects.
That’s a great question! When I was doing my research, I discovered that there’s really no such species as a “panther.” That’s a kind of generic term for large cats, which has come to typically refer to melanistic (dark colored) jaguars and leopards. So I thought there was room within that misnomer for me to create a new species. And thus, Shifters were born!

Good morning Rachel,
Another question for you
Do you sometimes find it difficult to reach 3000 words a day? I get worn out trying to write 2000 words a day… Do you ever get drained?

Similarly, Lisa H. wrote,
Rachel, what was your inspiration for the Shifter series? What motivated you to write on this topic?
The first spark, I guess, was an idea about a female werecat who didn’t want to go home. And when I started STRAY, I had no idea it would be a series. But by the time I was halfway through ROGUE, I knew it would be a series, and where the story line would eventually take me.

How has the internet fandom impacted you as a writer and your career? Positives and Negitives??(ie…book sales, getting the word out about your series, fan support, pirated eBooks)
Hi Heidi!
Um, the biggest positive would be the readers themselves. I love getting to chat with you guys! But I have no idea how much (if at all) it affects my sales. There has been some ebook piracy, but all I can do is report that to my publisher and let them take care of it. And try to make sure people know that if you download a book for free online, you’re actually STEALING it, from both the publisher and the author, and you’re making it harder for authors to make a living. Which could ultimately affect whether or not that author is able to publish future titles.

Hey, Rachel,
From what I’ve read, you had difficult time writing it, and writing isn’t a breeze. Do you listen to music while writing to keep you relaxed or inspired?
And was there ever a time you desperately needed a break from it, what be your stress reliever?
Also, Raonaid Luckwell told me about this.

So, here’s my question: After Prey, there are only two Faythe books left, aside from your Soul Screamer series, what other plans have you for your post-Shifters future?
Um… I’m not sure yet. I have another idea or two running around in my head, but I have to write ALPHA first. Then we’ll see…
babycat wrote,
My question is how do you develope your characters? Do they just come to you, like have their own voice inside of you, or do you outline them, molding them to what you need for the story?
For me, it’s a little bit of both. I always start with a character, and I think I know who s/he is at that time. But they always develop more, the more I write about them.

There are six books in Faythe’s series. SHIFT comes out in March 2010, and right now, ALPHA is scheduled for October of that year.
Jeffrey Lloyd wrote,
You once mentioned that your first novel (unpublished) was in a different genre. Have you ever considered revisiting it with your current experience and seeing if it will sell now?

Roberta Harwell wrote,
Do you ever get tired of promoting your work? Would you rather be writing than promoting?

There are blurbs for the first 2 Soul Screamers books on my website (rachelvincent.com), but if you’re looking for an early taste of Kaylee and her world, check my blog tomorrow. Harlequin Teen is publishing a free ebook prequel (about 60 pages long) on July 1, to coincide with the official PREY release!

Did it take you a long time to build that whole world, and did you do it all at once (the world building)or did you create bits and pieces as you went along?
My Shifters world was pretty well-established (in my head, at least), by the time Rogue hit the shelves. I had to know more than the readers knew at that point, to be able to keep all the alphas and territories straight. I have maps, and spreadsheets, and lots of stuff like that.

Well, I can’t give away spoilers here. All I can say is, keep reading!

Hey Rachel. You are an awesome writer and just keep doin’ what you’re doin’. I have so many questions but most of them I don’t expect answers for until the next book comes out. Sooo, I’ve read the reasons that you say this story had that very very sad part in it. Will you please tell me whether things will work out for everyone in the end? I don’t think I can take much more.

you are such a young writer, i can see a point in time when you run out of things you want to do with this character and you don’t want to repeat, so where do you think you would go from there? a new characters but still with shapeshifter?
how much sleep did you get tonight and where will you be when the stores open to sell your book?
Hi Rachel,
it’s me Anthony (@antgly).
Where did you get the inspiration for your books?
Thanks!
Me Anthony again.
I posted to Twitter the event link (will post more).

Thanks.
To the prize goddess: do we need to link to our book reviews? Can we just put the comment on the actual review or leave it here?
Thanks.
Dear faithful Heather C,
To answer your question, you might want to **AT LEAST** let me know of WHICH review it is that you commented on.
A link is always best though, because you have verified it right then and there and all I need to do is simply give you your points.
Hopefully that answers your question.

HI! I absolutely LOVE your werecat world. I became addicted to your books a couple of chapters into Stray and counted down until each release since then. Prey was an amazing book and just makes me anticipate the next one even more! My question is…Why Ethan? Was there a reason it was him in particular?

Can’t wait to read Pride and Prey:o)Well I just found out about this contest so i have a few questions.Hope its not too late. 1. Who is your favorite author? 2. What inspired you to become a writer?

Hi Rachel,
I Love Your Werecat Series! Please Write More And More!
My Questions Are:
1) Will Marc And Faythe Be Able To Finally Work Through Their Issues And Be Together For Good?
2) Are There More Books Planned For This Series, Or Is This The last One?
