A big welcome to our readers today! Be sure to read to the end of the interview to find out how to WIN the fabulous prizes being offered up.

PLEASE NOTE: This is not a fixed time event, the post just goes live at 10:30 am CDT. You can stop by any time during the day or evening and leave your questions and chat.

PLEASE KEEP SPOILERS TO A MINIMUM. Not all of the readers today have read Yasmine’s books.

Interview:

Hi Yasmine!

Welcome back to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!

I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been very interesting to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a writer! Readers, if you haven’t done so already please stop by and get your copy of Yasmine’s newest book Demon Mistress.

BBB: What are the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects of writing?

YG: The most challenging: at this point in my career, balancing the promotion, the administrative work, and the actual writing.  It’s a real tightrope and I work far, far more than 40 hours a week on it.  I probably put in 60-80 hours a week, especially when pre-release month collides with deadline month on another book AND then you get tossed revisions during that same period (just in the last couple weeks of a period like this).

The most rewarding:  seeing the worlds I create come to life and readers loving them.  There’s not much better than having people say “I devour your books—I love them!”  and know that you’ve given them a playground in which to escape for awhile.  Creating a world I’d personally love to live in and that I look forward to exploring with my writing.

Oh, being able to earn a living at what I love has to come in a close second, though. ~smiles~

BBB: Which of the sisters do you tend to like writing about more? I know this is kind of like asking who your favorite child is, but humor me. :)

YG: Actually, this question isn’t that hard. As much as I love all of them, Camille is definitely my favorite. I just connect with her easier and I love the more sensual aspects of her books.  There’s more of me in Camille than the others in many ways.  But Menolly and I share similar opinions on the nature of justice, and Delilah—well, I’m an ailurophile.  Love kitties!

BBB: What made you decide to have one of Delilah’s forms be a tabby cat?

YG: She just came wired that way. LOL, as I say below, my subconscious works on its own and then spits out info to me!

BBB: How do you keep track of your world building?

YG: I keep what I call my “research notebook from hell” which has everything in it—it’s basically a series bible.  I keep one for each series, and after each book is approved by my editor, I go through and update all the information in it.  You can find out more about it in my forums, in this post.  I actually give workshops on this subject!

BBB: Is it confusing to try to keep track of three different sisters that are three different types of paranormal creatures?

YG: No, I’m extremely organized and type A—to an almost scary point.  I’m terribly focused and driven with my work.

BBB: How did you choose the order of who which sister you would write about?

YG: I originally planned the series to be all from Camille’s point of view, so wrote Witchling from her POV.  But then, my editor at the time said, “So the next one’s from Delilah’s point of view, right?”  And I went, “Say what?”

Apparently my publisher had thought that’s what I intended and they liked the idea, so all of a sudden, I was writing the series from a round-robin viewpoint.  I didn’t know if I could do it, but my editor reassured me that I could and so I gave it a shot and bingo…it worked!

BBB: What do you feel are the benefits of the new electronic readers such as Kindle or Sony Digital Reader to the environment?

YG: Considering the energy it takes to make them, and the fact that they are not a renewable resource, not so much. Give me an old fashioned book any day. I’ll probably get a Kindle but not for regular reading—more for keeping a few research books at easy reach until I can buy a bigger house with more bookcases.

BBB: What impact do electronic readers create on the bottom line for authors in the end? Do you feel they have a negative impact or positive, or no impact at all that you can see?

YG: Pirating is far easier, which pisses me off.  And nobody can try to feed me the load of bull that pirating leads to new readers—the ones who do pirate books aren’t likely to go out and buy them.  They’ll just keep ripping off the authors.

Frankly, while a number of my books are in e-format, the vast, vast majority of my readers buy print copies.  So right now, I don’t see much impact.  I imagine in the future there will be more focus on e-books of all kinds as people adapt, but I’m not seeing that much distribution now.  I know I hate reading on the screen and so I will continue to buy print because I just like it better.

BBB: Who or what inspires you to write?

YG: I’ve been making up stories since I was three—I knew all along that I’d end up as a writer, that’s been my goal since I first discovered books (which was around 3 years old when I started learning to read).  The drive to write is just there…many things inspire ideas, but the will to write—the drive—seems to be hardwired into my being.

BBB: Can you tell us what your next release (s) will be? And do you have stand alone or anthology titles forthcoming?

YG: Demon Mistress just hit the shelves this week, so that’s available as in NOW, folks.  After this, on November 3, 2009 Never After—an anthology—will be out in which I have an Otherworld novella called The Shadow of Mist.

On January 5, 2010, I have two releases:  Bone Magic (the 7th OW book: back to Camille), and Inked, an anthology in which I have another OW novella called Etched in Silver.  After that, the next book will be the first in my new urban fantasy series—Night Myst.  (To squash potential rumors: the Indigo Court Series will not be a replacement for the Otherworld Series, I’m still writing about the sisters for a long time to come if things go right).

BBB: What inspired you to write about the Fae?

YG: To me, the world of Fae is seductive and glittering, dark and wild and frightening and feral.  I find it alluring. The Fae don’t play by human rules.  And I’m pledged as a priestess to a goddess of Fae, at least in her own way in her own spiritual pantheon.  I just find the whole concept mesmerizing.

BBB: Why did you choose a witch, a cat-shifter, and a vampire? Is there any deeper symbolism to them. Part of me looks at it like the trinity. Maiden, Mother, Crone. Or I could just be hallucinating again. lol

YG: They chose their own aspects and natures—apparently my subconscious works on its own a whole lot before tapping me on the shoulder because the D’Artigo sisters just showed up one night, fully-formed, insisting I write about them.   Now when you’re talking about the idea/concept of three sisters—that, in my mind, goes back to the Triple Goddess aspect of mythology, or the Fates or Norns, so yes, there is that connection.

BBB: Outside of writing, what is the most interesting job that you have ever had?

YG: Most were dreadfully boring or bad…I suppose it would have to be when I was transcribing interviews for the Secretary of State’s Office (the Archives) of Washington State.  The job wasn’t too bad…my boss—on the other hand—left much to be desired.  Other than that, I have a pretty bleakly boring job history.  I was a professional tarot reader for a number of years, but that was exhausting energy-wise and I don’t consider it to be a ‘regular’ job.  I led a more interesting life after I quit the State and moved into a converted school bus on the backend of five acres and slept with a hatchet by my side.  I lived in the bus for well about 7-8 months before I moved in with a friend and met and married his roommate ~grins~  The bus days were before I ever got my first contract, but I knew I didn’t want to go back to a 9-5 office job, and I knew that it was time to get my career in writing kicked off.  It took five years of hard work, but I managed.

BBB: If your series had a theme song, what would it be?

YG: Believe, by The Bravery.  ~grins~ It just seems to sum up their life and world.  For the new series—the Indigo Court series—Half Light, by Low and tomandandy (from the Mothman Prophecies) fits.

BBB: If you could pick one of your characters to have dinner with, who would it be and why?

YG: Oh good gods, that’s a hard one.  Dinner?  Just dinner?  Nothing else?  No hot time in the sheets?  ~laughs~ If it’s just dinner, I think maybe Iris –the tales she could tell.  Or, perhaps, Aeval, the Queen of Night.  I’ve got a thing for the dark Fae.  Now if we’re talking spending a week with…(yeah, my mind does wander  ~wicked grin~)…I’d happily spend it with Smoky, Morio, and Trillian.

BBB: Can you tell us what your latest Ink has been and when you developed your passion for tattoos?

YG: The last ink I had done was in 2004 and it’s Great Mother Bear and two of her cubs, on my left forearm.  You can see my tattoos (though some pics aren’t that great), on my still-to-be-finished personal Foxglove Glade site.  My passion for tattoos started to develop around 1990.  I’d never really thought about them much before but one day, I knew I had to have my totems tattooed on me.  Took me till 1998 until I could afford to start having them done, but they are addictive and I love them and am heavily inked.  I’m not into tattoos that don’t have *some* meaning to the bearer, but hey, that’s just me.

BBB: If you could shapeshift, what animal would you be? And why?

YG: Black panther—my totem.  I’d also love to be able to transform into an owl and be able to fly, or a dolphin and explore the depths of the ocean.

BBB: What is your favorite book of all time?

YG: Watership Down, by Richard Adams.  Second favorite: Rebecca, by Daphne du Maurier.  Third: LOTR by Tolkien, and after that: anything written by Ray Bradbury who’s my favorite author of all time.

BBB: Where is the most beautiful place you have visited in the world?

YG: There are two places, I think, that come to mind and both are very different but incredibly beautiful.  One is the Olympic Peninsula, here in Washington State—one of the only temperate rainforests in the lower USA.  The trees tower, huge and looming, and they’re ancient and brilliant and remind me of the Ents out of Middle Earth.  The other is on the edge of the ocean, on the Big Island of Hawai’i , where the molten lava pours into the sea.  In that barren wasteland of newly created rock, Pele is creating new land, the youngest land in the world.  I love the stark beauty of it there and the vivid contrast between the brilliance of the foliage on the island and the mile after mile of  hardened lava.

BBB: And last, but certainly not least…..Starbuck’s or Folgers?

YG: No contest. ~grins~ I’m a Starbucks fiend.  I grind my own beans at home, and that’s where we go when we go out for coffee.  Triple shot iced lattes—soy if I go out, rice milk when I stay home (because Starbucks doesn’t have rice milk), are my poison of choice.

It’s hard to think of a question related to storyline, so I will ask a personal one. If you could be on a deserted island with one type of paranormal creature with you. which would it be? and why? Thanks! Lisa

Have you had any weird experiences with fans?

  9. Comment by Elie — June 4, 2009 @ 9:01 am

Hi Yasmine this is Elie N at zenfoxflower@yahoo.com

Many times it seem the covers make my next decision about what books to read. How much creative input do you have on your covers?

How steamy are your books on a scale of 1-5, five being HOT?

I requested a friendship on myspace and signed up for your newsletter!

What’s your favorite Ray Bradbury book and why?

    Thanks for being here!

    Lisa :)

Hi Yasmine!! I am a big time fan and it is so great to see you here! I have all the D’Artigo sisters books, I almost have all the Chintz and China books, and I plan to buy Demon Mistress this week. *G* I also got a bunch of my friends hooked on your books. *L*

Quick question: Do you also write under the pen name India Ink? If it is you, then I have those as well. *L*

It is great seeing you here! I can’t wait to read Demon Mistress, plus all the upcoming books. Best of luck!!

Terrific interview, thanks so much for running it. I’m a big fan of Yasmine’s work! Yasmine, if you ever get the chance to visit Iceland, I think you’d really like it. The landscape and the feel of the place is astonishing, especially where the tectonic plates meet and shift.

  17. Comment by Roxi — June 4, 2009 @ 9:36 am

Hi! to get the formalities over with I RSVP’d sometime around 1 or 2 this morning. She is already a friend on my myspace. LOL Guess that doesn’t count. I have subscribed to BBB newsletter and a member of the Blood Bank. Now to get to the important part. I originally purchased Dragon Wytch first because it looked like a good read and since I am addicted to the Fae it seemed right. Then I discovered that I had purchased the 4th book in a series (seems I have a habit of buying the middle of the series first only to discover what I’ve done when I go to read it.) So I instantly searched out the first 3 books. I believe I bought them from Amazon or it could have been BN.

Since Artwork is what initially draws me to a book my first question would be how you came to work with Tony Mauro.

did you work with him on the look of the sisters and the cover art or did he submit something for approval and revision?

  18. Comment by ann marie b — June 4, 2009 @ 9:41 am

    Hi Yasmine,
I just picked up Dragon Wytch this past weekend and I can’t wait to read it. My question to you is if you could ask one question to anyone past or present, who would it be and what would you ask them? Have fun on BBB:)

  19. Comment by Roxi — June 4, 2009 @ 9:47 am

What advice would you give to someone new to the craft?

  20. Comment by Brenda M. — June 4, 2009 @ 9:49 am

    Hi Yasmine,

Will you be writing about Trillian’s world of the Dark Fae?

  21. Comment by Roxi — June 4, 2009 @ 9:52 am

That’s a good question! I’d like the answer to that too… Trillian is SO interesting

  22. Comment by Kimberly S — June 4, 2009 @ 9:54 am

I was never so glad to RSVP for a discussion. I am a librarian and a HUDGE fan. I read that you keep a research notebook. My question to you is this: what type of reasearch do you do? I am sure most of it from you imagination but do you do research on some things like myth? Thank you for your time and I can not wait to get the new book :)

I already get the newsletter. I am joining the facebook

  23. Comment by RachaelfromNJ — June 4, 2009 @ 10:25 am

If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only have one item, what would you take and why that item?

I can be contacted through my blog. Don’t want to post email here cause of spam.

Hey! Thanks for doing this today. First off I RSVP’d yesterday. ;)

Love the books! I read them out of order, having picked up 4 first then quickly backtracking when I finished that one so I can state as a reader that anyone afraid of getting sucked into another series, they can be tried as stand alone books….I’m not saying you won’t get hooked but hey one book isn’t too much to ask right Yasmine?

Anyway on with my question. Could you tell us a bit more about the new series and what it brings to the table that the sisters don’t already give us? BTW love Maggie and Mellony’s relationship but Delilah is my favorite. I really want to see more of her with the Autumn Lord!

  27. Comment by Lois — June 4, 2009 @ 10:33 am

and now #2 - hmm. . . well, a) do you have a favorite chocolate or item with chocolate and b) how is your day so far? (okay, so I nuts and lacking an imagination, but others usually come up with better questions by the time I show up! LOL)

BTW thanks for doing this today! My birth celebration is tomorrow and have been ordered out of the house to enjoy the day with friends and family. Now for another question:

Yasmine: What are your astrological signs? including traditional zodiac and chinese astrology and elements

  31. Comment by Shartyrant — June 4, 2009 @ 10:44 am

This may sound as a strange question, but I just have to ask. If your books are ever made into a movie or TV series, who is your IDEAL to play your characters? I figure some would be hard to cast. Especially Smoky!

I have been signed up for her newsletter since she posted about it on myspace. Obviously, I am a “friend” of hers on myspace (bookaholic) and facebook & twitter ( both of the latter under shartyrant) and am a member of her fan club from the time it started on yahoo groups on. ;)

i rsvp’d the other day, i already have yasmine and the moonstalkers on myspace.

i do love the sisters of the moon series, but i also loved your crafting the body devine book. i was wondering if there were going to be any further books in that area and also if you planned any books set more in the worlds of the other characters.

Do you ever go “unplugged” and write in longhand or do you strictly stay on the computer?

I have read your blog for quite some time and and getting into the books - thanks for helping inspire a fellow writer (although I am still a newbie).

Hi Yasmine!!! Thanks for stopping by. :) Writing from different points of view has got to be confusing at times. Do you ever find that you are focusing on telling the story from 1 sister’s POV, and the others are butting in and trying to takeover?

Very cool on the tattoos. I have 1 of colored stars on my ankle. Its my first so it was kind of a i really love this design, and I want to make sure I like the whole tattoo thing. I have been stuck on my 2nd, because I want to incorporate my 2 animals - a brown bear and an owl. I just can’t seem to be able to get the design right, but I love the fact you have a bear tattoo. I haven’t seen a lot of them. Abstract seems to be more the ‘in’ thing.

    Hi Yasmine!

Welcome to BBB! What a fantastic interview. :) I have the first four books in the series, but have yet had time to read all of them. I did enjoy the first one though! My question would be this, if you had to pick anywhere to spend immortality, where would it be and why?

    Thank you for stopping by!

Yasmine, I adore the D’Artigo sisters, tho I’m a bit behind on my reading. That’s okay. As soon as I finish one book, I’ll have the next!

Did anything in particular draw you to the Craft?

BBB is a permanent link on my web site, and I’m friended/ following BBB on Twitter and Facebook.

A bloody good welcome to Bitten By Books! I’ve been more involved in your writing tips than your books, but I did read Witchling not too long ago. Ever since reading that and Storm Born by Richelle Mead, I’ve wanted to know more about kitsune. Where did you first hear about the fox demon? It’s such a creative character that I’ve been looking for mention of it nonstop!

Hi everybody! Thank you all for turning out! I’m thrilled to see so many questions and good luck to everyone in the contest. So here come answers–several per post to keep the thread from going too long:

Sonya Hucks: hmmm what fruit best describes my personality? I’d have to say icy cold cherries. Never know if they’ll be sweet or tart, rich flavor, and versatile. (And if you can tie a knot in my stem with your tongue, well, so much the better. *grins*)

Lisa M: What kind of paranormal creature would I like to be stuck on a deserted island with? Dragon shifter! They could fly me to safety, they can start fires if it gets cold at night, They can eat anything that might want to hurt me, and if it’s my character Smoky, he’d make the nights a whole lot hotter in the best of ways. :)

Ria M: Who is my favorite character and why? Camille, out of my Otherworld Series–I just love writing about her. She’s funny, snarky, willing to put her life on the line, uninhibited, expresses her passion without reserve, loyal to family, friends, and her lovers, and I desperately want her BDSM wardrobe and curvy figure.

Christine Rains: Have I had any weird experiences with fans? Uh…yeah…and some I’d rather not talk about because they are just a bit too freaky–and not in a good way. But most of my fans are wonderful and supportive and I sure appreciate them. :)

Elie N: As far as cover art: With the first 16 books I wrote, none. And Tony Mauro–my artist for the Otherworld Series, was assigned to me. I sure lucked out with him, he’s done such an incredible job for my books and he really does ‘get’ my characters and nail them right on the head. I have a little more input now, but by no means do I get anything near to final say or anything. And how steamy are my books? Camille’s are the hottest, her sisters aren’t quite as sexy, but the sex does not overshadow the plot by any means. It *is* explicit, but there aren’t usually more than 3-4 sex scenes per book and I make sure they fit where they need to be. I love writing the sex scenes but really enjoy writing the action scenes too. LOL

  40. Comment by Yasmine — June 4, 2009 @ 11:38 am

Lisa Kessler: My fave Ray Bradbury book? That’s a hard one but I’d have to say The October Country. I love, love, love that set of short stories. I also absolutely love Something wicked This Way Comes and the Halloween Tree. Of course, I love everything I’ve read of his–so it’s hard to choose.

Vic P: What will make you love the Indigo Court books: They are different than the OW books but they’re written by me, in my style, with the same sense of ‘twisted reality’ that I toss into the OW series. I’m not saying a lot about them now, but they’re going to be dark, edgy, and sensual–and yet there will always be my warped sense of humor involved. I’m taking an old theme and putting my unique spin on it. ;)

Maithe: Yes, I wrote the India Ink books (I had to use a pen name for that series because it was in the same imprint as the Cihintz ‘n China books). There are only three of them and that’s all there ever will be of those. ;) So glad you love the books!

  41. Comment by Yasmine — June 4, 2009 @ 11:39 am

Roxi: The publisher chooses the artist. I lucked out with Tony because he actually READ the manuscript of Witchling and he just nailed Camille–and he nailed the others too. See my answer to Elie N about cover art/input. :)

Ann Marie B: What question would I ask and to whom would I ask it: What a hard question! And so many, many possibilities…I’m going to forego the serious questions today and say I’d ask my favorite singer/musician (Gary Numan) if he’d write a soundtrack for my Otherworld Series, because his current work over the past few days fits the mood of the series soooo much. ;) (I’m such a total fangurl freak over him).

Roxi: Read widely, don’t dabble, realize the magic is real, and that you never stop learning–don’t take the weekend warrior type courses. You can’t learn magic in a week or a month–it takes years, and there are many, many paths to choose from.

Brenda M: Will I be writing about Trillian’s world of Svartalfheim and the Svartans: I’d like to at some point, and in Etched in Silver (the novella that comes out in Inked in January), you get to see the point when they met. It depends on what novellas and other options my publisher offers me as the years go on.

  42. Comment by Yasmine — June 4, 2009 @ 11:39 am

Kimberly S: Hi–always love to hear from my fans/readers! What kind of research do I do? I have an extensive background in magic, mythology and a number of other things, but my research covers everything from guns to bat guano to how to make a car blow up using magnesium from wheel rims to dragons throughout the world to the youkai kitsune to…LOL, you can see that the oddest things (and often just for a small mention, to make the worlds seem real) are up for research.

Rachel from NJ: What one object would I want on a deserted island? It would be a toss up between a good first aid kit and a damned good, sharp knife. :)

Tiah B: I’ve always wanted to write fantasy and SF–ever since I was a little girl, and when the urban fantasy genre began to grow, I realized that *this* is where my voice is. I love contemporary world mixed with fantasy. :)

Maggie Mae: Not saying a lot about the Indigo Court books yet (don’t like to talk out the energy before the first book is fully written) but what I said to Vic P above: They are different than the OW books but they’re written by me, in my style, with the same sense of ‘twisted reality’ that I toss into the OW series. They’ll be dark, edgy, and sensual- and yet there will always be my warped sense of humor involved. I’m taking an old theme and putting my unique spin on it. ;)

  43. Comment by Yasmine — June 4, 2009 @ 11:40 am

Roxi: I’m a Capricorn (Sun, Jupiter, saturn in Capricorn, Moon/Mercury in Aquarius, Venus in Pisces, Rising/Mars in Cancer). I squeaked in on the Rat cycle and both it and the Capricorn really fit me.

Shartyrant: Actually, if the books were turned into movies, I’d prefer to see them done as anime. There aren’t many actors or actresses that make me think of my characters–very few of them have that Fae/OW ‘energy’ that I’d like to see in live characters. And there’s so much good anime out there–I can so easily see the Sisters and their friends in that venue.

Christina w: I have eight nonfiction metaphysical books out there on witchcraft, tarot, meditation, sex magic and totem magic. As for future books…I won’t say never but right now, nothing is on the board. I really prefer writing fiction–the nonfiction was almost by accident. ~grins~

Della B: Do I ever write by hand? I can’t anymore–my tendonitis is pretty bad and it’s MUCH easier for me to use a keyboard. I do journal by hand, when I journal privately, but otherwise, I mainly sign checks, books, and scribble notes while working with pens and that’s about it. ~grins~

Beet: What one question would I like readers to ask me and why? What a reader can do to make their favorite authors happy. Because in my case, besides “buy the books when they’re first out if you can”…I’d like readers to ask before pulling out a camera at signings and to respect that I’m photophobic and very uncomfortable having my picture taken. And please, if a reader hates a book, don’t write hate mail to the author–there’s no purpose in spreading negativity. I don’t like a lot of books but I’d never even THINK of writing venomous letters to authors–I just find another one I *do* like. Also: if you love books, reviews (and I’m talking about balanced reviews, they don’t have to be five-star squee reviews) on sites help spread the word, talking about the authors you like in reader forums helps a lot–because word of mouth is the author’s best friend in making sure the books get out there and that your favorite series can continue. :)

Heather C: No, actually they play nice and take turns like good girls. ~grins~ And if I ‘get’ something about the next book (meaning a different POV, obviously), they’re content if I write the note down and stick it in a file for when I start that book.

Virginia H: I wouldn’t want to spend eternity as just one being if it had to be in body. I have no desire to be immortal in the physical form—I’d rather reincarnate and experience many different lives, and then when I decide to leave the physical realm, I’ll have all of those memories to take with me.

Nancy H: I entered the Craft through a couple mystical experiences that I talk about in Embracing the Moon, but I’ve always been psychic—ever since I was young—and I didn’t have any help in coping with it. I was called to the Craft by the Goddess herself.

Jackie U: I first heard about them through the InuYasha anime—my favorite anime series and one of my very favorite series overall. The concept totally intrigued me so I started looking into it more.

Rachel C: Hey lady! Where have you been keeping yourself? I’m waiting for Carpe Corpus to show in the mail, BTW, but can’t read it until after deadline. ~grins~ I just love your Morganville vamp series!

Is there anyplace you go to get inspiration for your tattoos? Art books, a certain artist? A friend whose a designer? My problem is I have no art skills, and I can’t find a good way to express what I want.

  47. Comment by Koren Cota — June 4, 2009 @ 11:51 am

    Hello Yasmine,
I have been waiting for this(your interview and Demon Mistress). First question is off topic….Can I get another roll? I don’t wanna kiss Morgaine. *whining*

More appropriate question….well many of my questions have already been asked either in the interview or by other commenter’s before me so I will wait for the answers and try not to be repetitive.

What do you see in the future for Maggie? Developementally?
Will Bruce be joining the “family”?

I am very curious to see your answer about who would play who in a film version.

I am so glad you are here and to have this opprotunity. Thank you so much for being here. Your books are an addiction for me, or at least as close as I get to one.

Koren Cota: See above for my answer about movies. As far as Maggie, while she’s always there, gargoyles in my world develop very slowly–she’ll be a baby/toddler for a very long, long time. As far as Bruce, you’ll learn more about Iris and Bruce in Bone Magic! In fact, you’ll learn a LOT more about Iris in Bone Magic–about her past and some of the secrets she’s keeping.

Do you think it important for a writer (new and/or established) to have an LLC (limited liability corporation) for protection?

  54. Comment by Liza — June 4, 2009 @ 12:37 pm

Hi Yasmine! I haven’t read your books yet, but they sound wonderful. Does the Sisters of the Moon series have to be read in order or does each book stand alone?

I already subscribe to the newsletter and RSVP’d to this event on facebook.

Koren: That, I don’t know. I’ve thought about it, but honestly don’t know yet. :)

Starla: see my response to Kimberly S. in my post made at 11:39 this morning. :)

Amy: Honestly, for an established author I think it’s worth looking into. Am in process of doing that myself, but each author needs to decide for themselves and get GOOD legal advice–check out credentials.

Liza: It helps, especially once you reach book 4–I really do recommend reading the first three before you hit the later books.

Hi Yasmine! I love your books and am currently in the middle of Demon Mistress. So far, it’s awesome!

My question is where do you come up with some of the character’s names? I know that Siobhan is a Celtic/Irish name in origin, but what about Roz, Tanaquar, Lethesanar and Aeval (just to name a few). Those are some interesting names and not very common.

HI Yasmine! First off, I really enjoy the Sisters of the Moon series and am very excited to read the other series now that they’re more readily available. Secondly, if you had to write an Otherworld novel from a perspective other than one of the sisters, who would it be?
I Joined Yasmine’s facebook fans and am following her on Twitter. Thanks!

  65. Comment by Yasmine — June 4, 2009 @ 2:22 pm

Dianne: Maggie is the only character in the series actually based on anybody real. She’s based on a friend’s senior calico kitty. He used to joke about me making her a character in my books and finally, it just occurred to me it would be cool to turn her into a gargoyle since the Sisters cannot have a cat for a pet because Delilah would have territorial issues.

Dani: most of the names just are ‘there’ when the character shows up. I really don’t ‘create’ most of the names.

MarnieColette: If I could have any paranormal power, I think it would be exceptional strength/health/athleticism. *grins*

Flip: So glad you love the books!

    Yasmine

  66. Comment by Roxi — June 4, 2009 @ 2:28 pm

Thanks! I’m a gemini in the elemental fire dragon in the chinese zodiac. I must say for those who don’t believe, look up the respective zodiacs and then meet me. You’d be amazed at how accurate they truly are.

As an author, especially one of the paranormal realms, do you ever just feel that what you have been trying to work on is more painful to write and read than having a root canal?

(I ask because I was writing something for a college class that the prof was so nice as to give me a D than the F it truly deserved)

  67. Comment by Vickie B — June 4, 2009 @ 2:29 pm

I have WitchyChicks on my blogroll as well as BBB (for the longest time) and I subscribe to your blog. BloodBank member, too….

Yasmine: Do you have a favorite place to do your writing? I do love this series. It’s action in all forms and that’s my type of book. Thanks for creating the sisters and their surroundings.

  68. Comment by Yasmine — June 4, 2009 @ 2:39 pm

Heather B: I have 7 novels in the closet that will never be published, all SF/Fan/Paranormal, then I wrote 8 published nonfiction books on witchcraft, meditation, sex magic, etc., then two mystery series–one paranormal (five books) and one not (three books) and I was so bored writing the non-paranormal series that I knew I wouldn’t be going on with it. My publishers for my nonfiction were mid-size press, then I moved to Berkley and have been there since 2002. I have 22 books on the shelves now.

Kimberly B: Iris–she has a story that needs to be told and I’m hoping to write a book from her perspective in the future.

Roxi: No, actually, there are rough days with my work, but it’s more with me being tired or wanting to go play rather than with what I’m writing. :)

Vickie B: I primarily work in my home office. I prefer the solitude-though not always silence, considering the music I listen to–and feeling that I’ve got everything I need at my fingertips. :)

Yasmine, I just picked up Changeleling a couple of weeks ago with a bunch of others at a flea market…. It was the best buy of the day. This weekend I added to the collection by buying 4 others…. they were out of Huntress. I am a big fan for life. I love the rotating POV BTW. and even though I am a vamp freak my fave is Delilah and Chase. I am only up to book 3 so far but I am soooo hooked.

My question is, trying to not give spoilers: There are 12 objects the sisters are searching for. Will there be 12 books then? How many books are contracted so far in this series.?

Hockeyvampiress: Actually, there are nine Spirit Seals, but no, they won’t find all of them in nine books–there are other large series story arcs coming into play as you go through the books and a major one opens up in Dragon Wytch. As the Spirit Seals storyline is wrapped up (and it will be as time goes on) the other major story arcs will take over. :)

    Hey there Yasmine! *Waves* Hehehe
Which characters would you like to ‘flesh out’ more? Maybe a backstory on Chase and the first ever meeting of the D’Artigo sisters?

I’m not in for the contest, just for fun!

Next question: You have mentioned on twitter that you have some other books in the closet. Have you tried to market them or do you have any desire to?

  79. Comment by Raven Maya Williams — June 4, 2009 @ 4:01 pm

Hey Lady Yasmine, I have a question for ya.

Are you going to write a mini story for the sisters adopted baby Gargoyle? :)

  80. Comment by janice — June 4, 2009 @ 4:04 pm

Hey Yasmine! How are the kitties? I can’t wait to get Demon Mistress. I have all the other books in the series and just need for my son to come home with my gift card to buy Demon Mistress! I’m really stoked to see you here at Bitten by Books. I try to keep with you elsewhere and would just like to say THANK YOU for the great stories. I’ll pop back in after pizza to offer up entries for the contest.

  81. Comment by Nancy Gilliland — June 4, 2009 @ 4:19 pm

Where do you get the ideas for your world building? I love the books and have them all so far. I have been a member of your newsletter for a while now. Shared on facebook, livejournal and blogger. Already a subscriber at BBB.

  82. Comment by Jerol Oldenkamp — June 4, 2009 @ 4:21 pm

I love your books and am waiting for Demon Mistress from Barnes and Noble on line…I am very anxious to continue to read it. I have passed on your books to friends, they are enjoying them too. I also just ordered your chintz and china series to read as well. I have always been interested in the craft…How did you become involved in it?

  83. Comment by Shirley — June 4, 2009 @ 4:44 pm

Just love all your series but the sisters are my fav. Really sorry that C&C ended tho…too bad you couldn’t develop that series in the direction you wanted.

What do you when you have to cope with stress or negativity?
What is the most fun thing you’ve ever done?

    RSVP’d…TX for the interview, ladies!

  84. Comment by janice — June 4, 2009 @ 4:48 pm

For the contest: I am already friends with Yasmine on Facebook and Myspace and follow her on Twitter. I have receive the BBB Newsletter and I twittered. I had RSVP’d for the event too.

  85. Comment by Carol S — June 4, 2009 @ 4:49 pm

Where do your ideas come from? Do they pop full blown from your brain or are they result of your mind reworking day to day events and ideas. I too have been reading and writing stories since I was 3. When I went to kindergarten the teachers chewed my mom up one side and down the other. I also did my own illustrating. I have some of my books yet. I laugh when I read the corny plots and silly drawings but I hang on to them. I would like to write but I have so many ideas going round in my brain that I can never get one train of thought going (I shoot off on tangents). I always thought that I was over organized (I have been told so by various friends) but it sure doesn’t look like it.

  86. Comment by Starla — June 4, 2009 @ 5:01 pm

    Yasmine,

Oppss…sorry didn’t see that one … guess that’s what I get from trying to read too many things at work. haha I’ve lost my ability to multi-task.

How did you come up with the names for your kitties? Do you give them nick-names? In our combined household we have 7 cats … all have their given names and their nicknames that they answer too.

    :)

  87. Comment by Yasmine — June 4, 2009 @ 5:27 pm

SandyM/Wynterrose: Re: feline leukemia–not really, our gurlz are indoor-only kitties and we vaccinate when younger. And re: fur/computer: Everything in our house is covered with fur. Yeah, they love the electronics and it really gets kind of fuzzy sometimes! LOL

Jan: Now that I’ve delved into Siobhan’s story (in The Shadow of Mist, coming in Never After in 11.2009), and Camille & Trillian’s meeting (Etched in Silver, in Inked in 1.2010), I really want to go into Iris’s backstory which plays out to some degree in Bone Magic. I’d also love to explore Morio’s background, and Vanzir more.

Breia B: It’s open ended–I’ll write the series as long as *I* feel it’s going well and as long as my publisher lets me. :) As far as story ideas: I can’t go a day without having half-dozen ideas come to me. I think writers are hardwired to look at the world through a series of “what ifs?”.

Raven Maya: You know, the problem is she’s really just that–a baby. If I did, it would have to be pretty cutesy because right now, she’s about the level of a two year old. LOL…if reader’s wanted it, though, given that, I’d think about it. A short story, though.

    Janice: Thank you!

Nancy: I’ve always been a world builder. I think it’s coded into my DNA. Sometimes I get a little snarky and say “The idea faerie left them under my pillow” but the truth is: everywhere you look, there are ideas. I saw a license plate once that read “Hunter” and my first thought was: What if he’s a serial killer taunting the police?

Jerol: That one I answered above–here’s what I said so you don’t have to go hunting: I entered the Craft through a couple mystical experiences that I talk about in Embracing the Moon, but I’ve always been psychic—ever since I was young—and I didn’t have any help in coping with it. I was called to the Craft by the Goddess herself.

Shirley: RE: Stress or negativity: I’m not very good at coping with stress. My general cureall is to work harder–LOL. Though backrubs, sex, and caffeine are also great fixes. And the most fun thing I’ve done? I’ve had a lot of fun interspersed through my life, most of it after I was 30. I dunno…I guess…wading in the bay at Tolmie State Park at midnight with my ex-GF and spending a magical summer running through the woods, working magic, and just…being wild and free after leaving my ex was one of the highlights. Living in my bus was so hard but was also such an incredible experience.

Carol S: LOL, answered that one a couple timessee the answer to Nancy’s reply above in this post.

Starla: The cats are all named after goddesses or characters from legend and lore. And yes, they have nicknames. :) Some of them so sweet they make Sam reach for his insulin! LOL

    Hello there…

Looking through all of these questions and anwers is really cool! Thank you to both BBB and Yasmine for doing this :-)

    Yasmine,
    1) How do you feel about fanfiction, and do you object to your characters being used?
    2) If you could take a week off, with no budget limit, and go anywhere in the world, where would you go and what would you do there?

Love ya!! Back to reading Darkling :-)

    Jennifer (HappyTwilighter)

  89. Comment by Marissa — June 4, 2009 @ 5:45 pm

Yasmine I love that you are answering questions for all your readers. I love the sisters. I would have to say that Menolly is my favorite, but I do love them all. I love reading your tweets on twitter. Thanks.
Anyways my question is somewhat personally, so I understand if you dont want to answer it. But I figured no hard in trying. I have heard you talk about your husband and the kittys and even your mom. But I never heard talk of children, do you have any? Did you ever want children?
BTW I RSVP’d for this. I look forward to reading more from you in the future.
    Marissa

  90. Comment by Deborah Blake — June 4, 2009 @ 5:46 pm

    Hi Yasmine–
Already following you everywhere, as you know :-)
RSVP’d and RT on Twitter and posted on Facebook.
I’m a bit behind on the books–just finished Darkling (which I loved) and ordered Dragon Wytch from my local indy bookstore this AM. (and I have an autographed copy of book 5 waiting for me to get thru book 4!)
Here’s my question: does your real life as a witch influence your writing in any way? [As another witch, I know mine influences me, so I wondered.]

  91. Comment by Yasmine — June 4, 2009 @ 5:51 pm

HappyTwilighter: Hey Jenn! Re: Fanfic: I know it’s not popular among some fans to hear this but yes, I DO object to it. I don’t like *anybody* messing with my characters. I do not condone it. I won’t go looking for it, but if I stumble over it, I’ll crack down. Frankly, for me it feels intrusive, *especially* slash fan fiction. I write these worlds, they exist in my head and thoughts, the characters come from within me, so in a sense these worlds are very much a part of me. And I do not play well with others. Hell, I don’t think I could ever collaborate either, with another writer, either. My theory is: if you want to write, create your OWN world and series and that way you can perhaps, one day, publish it and enjoy the satisfaction of seeing your own unique vision come to life.

And re: limitless vacation: easy. Back to the big island of Hawai’i…love it there, near the volcano and the ocean. HI holds part of my heart. :)

    Yasmine

  92. Comment by Yasmine — June 4, 2009 @ 5:54 pm

Marissa: no problem on the question. :) No, we don’t have human children (our cats are our kids), and no, I have never felt the urge to become a mother. I have very few maternal instincts when it comes to people and just never saw that path as necessary for me. We love our life together the way it is, and feel that by choosing not to have kids, we contribute to lessening our global footprint in the long run, and we leave the childraising up to those who are meant to be parents.

Deborah: I don’t see how it *can’t* affect my writing. Everything that ever happened to me shapes how I view the world, how I look at life. It’s all grist for the mill. :)

    Yasmine

  93. Comment by Marissa — June 4, 2009 @ 5:58 pm

    Yasmine,
I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to answer that question. My husband and I dont have children either but our fur babies are our children. So I know what you mean.

Firstly, I RSVP’D day before yesterday,
I am already a member of Moonstalkers.
I already follow Yasmine on FB and twitter and subscribe to her newsletter. I am also a member of BBB Bloodbank. I have twittered about the contest as well.

    Hi Yasmine!!!

I am a huge fan of the series.I love all three sisters equally but the one hook up I am really yearning for is Delilah and the Autumn Lord. Will we get to see any action at all in that direction? I also have to mention that since reading Demon Mistress, I am in LUST with Vanzir. Smokey will always have a place in my bed as well lmao!!! TY Yasmine, you totally rock woman!

  95. Comment by Anna — June 4, 2009 @ 6:10 pm

    Hi Yasmine,

    I’m really enjoying your books!!

I have seen the series called Sisters of the Moon and then
called The Otherworld. I was just wondering which is it, or
    is it both?

    Anna
    annasbookblog @ gmail.com

  96. Comment by Yasmine — June 4, 2009 @ 6:11 pm

Kat: If you’ve read Night Huntress, you’ve seen the Autumn Lord’s plans for Delilah. And once you read Bone Magic, you’ll see that there’s a major transformation that happens with both Camille and Chase (separately) and the latter will affect Delilah’s relationship with him in some pretty big ways. Anymore would be way too much of a spoiler. :)

    Yasmine

  97. Comment by Yasmine — June 4, 2009 @ 6:14 pm

Anna: It’s both. I started calling it the Sisters of the Moon series when I was writing Witchling and my readers got used to that. Then Berkley decided to call it the Otherworld Series–which is the official title. So, it’s both. LOL

I’ve never come across an author that has had more than one main character in which they were equal. I love the dynamic of the sisters, and I was wondering… Do you find it difficult to balance between the three POVs? And do you find it difficult to keep the sisters equal and not let one overshadow the others?

Cathy M.: It’s Yasmine, btw, with a Y–both in spelling and pronunciation ;) Dream vacation: see what I wrote in answer to Happy Twilighter’s second question not too far above.

Sarah M: No, actually, when I switch books, I headjump into the sister in question, even though my fave is Camille. But they all are so different, it’s pretty easy for me to keep them separate.

    Yasmine

  103. Comment by Yasmine — June 4, 2009 @ 6:25 pm

Ashley: hi there! I love alternative, New Wave, 80’s technopop, dark wave, industrial goth, grunge, now and then: classic rock, Hawaiian, Celtic (though it needs to have percussion) and definitely classical. I can’t stand country music and don’t like much easy listening. ;)

Marie: If I could ignore my food allergies…well, actually, it always depends. Cheesecake–I miss it so much. I love pumpkin pie in the autumn, and apple crisp in winter. Lemon meringue pie in the summer–miss that one (can have lemon pudding, but not supposed to have the pie crust). I’ve got a horrendously strong sweet tooth, but tend to prefer fruity desserts like pie and lemon pudding and so forth.

Reading your comment about Delilah and the Autumn Lords plans for her. Hey again Yasmine,
Loved your pictures with the tattoos! Thanks for the tweet link! I know fans of a couple other series are big on getting tattoos related to the series. I got my first one last fall of the Dark Hunter bow and arrow to celebrate going to New Orleans for the first time and meeting up other Kenyon minions.

Do you hear about fans going out to get Otherworld related ink? If so how do you feel about it? Seen any really cool designs come out of that?

  117. Comment by Yasmine — June 4, 2009 @ 7:32 pm

Maggie Mae: You know, the one thing I caution people is make sure you’re willing to wear that tattoo forever. What if you suddenly decided you didn’t like the series? As far as getting OW tats in general…I’m not averse to it but not sure just what I think. LOL…never really thought of it before.

here’s another question for you: I know it may seem trivial or silly but, do you have a nickname? My full name is Roxanna and no one ever gets that right so I go by Rox or Roxi. Would you be offended to be called Yas? I have teenagers and it seems hardwired in my brain to shorten names if possible.

It has been an enjoyable day of getting to know a favorite writer and witch.

Merry Meet, I’m new to your books - just started reading them within the past month, and I’m hooked. I even started the mystery series today.

    My questions
    1) I found Witchling filed under Paranormal Romance, do you think this is a good genre for this series?

    2) Who drives you the most when you are writing? Yourself, the characters, or someone else?

Submitted the email with all the other info. Thank you.

    Hi Yasmine!
I have enjoyed your interview/blog with Rachel! I am a fan and love your books! The sisters Rock! I am on the hunt for the new one but it hasn’t hit the shelves here yet. :( I am checking again tomorrow.
    My questions are:
    (1) I have noticed a slow down in the books being put on the shelves as soon as they are supposed to. Do you think this is due to the economy and people not buying books as fast?
(2)After following your interviews and such, we have learned who your faves are and boy would that be a awesome weekend get away with those three! :) I also have read how important your writing is to you and your husband so I was wondering which characters, male and female does your husband like best?
Thank you again Yasmine and Rachel!

What I have done for this contest:
*I am already a subscriber to Yasmines’ newsletter, the Witchy Chicks, and her my space.
*I am already a member to Bitten by Books and the Blood Bank.
    *Asked 2 questions

Roxi: Yeah, I do have several with friends. :) I kind of prefer to use my full name (Yasmine) though, with the rest of the world. I also have an odd nickname I got many years ago and it’s “the Painted Panther”…because my totem is a black panther and I’m inked–now, very heavily inked. :)

WitchBaby: Paranormal romance doesn’t fit quite as well as ‘urban fantasy’ but until there’s an actual ‘urban fantasy’ classification on the spines and shelves, it’s the closest thing. My books have more sex/relationships than typical SF/Fan and they definitely aren’t ‘high fantasy’….so yeah, it works. And what drives me the most when I’m writing? The actual drive to write, the images in my head, the voices that need out on papper. :)

Beverly G: My husband is my biggest cheerleader–he’s ecstatly happy over my success because he watched me struggle to get where I’m at for so many years and he’s seen first hand the heartbreak, the disappointments, the little joys that all go along with building a career in writing. 99% of my friends are so supportive that it’s like having an embarrassing array of riches–I treasure their encouragement and drive to help me out when I need it. And memorable fan moments: most memorable fan was at a signing many years ago for my nonfiction. A friend brought one of her friends over–the guy was too shy to approach me on his own. He had a copy of Embracing The Moon that was held together by a rubber band and every page was filled with highlighter marks and notes in the margins. That book was falling apart and so well read that he must have known it by heart. I signed it for him (he was truly shy–could barely mumble a hello) and even though I am NOT a huggy person and don’t like hugging strangers, I couldn’t help but offer the guy a hug. He looked so happy when he left that I’ll never forget that–and I try never to forget that my books might really make an impact on someone, so I try to always remember to respect my readers unless they’ve given me reason otherwise.

Chris J: In answer to question number 1, I dunno–it depends on the bookstore. Obviously the economy has had a major impact on booksellers, and that affects how many books they’re actually stocking now. And question 2: You know, I have no idea! LOL…I know he won’t let me put the posters I commissioned of Trillian, Morio, and Smoky in the bedroom! ~grins~

Strogan/Gabby: In a word, yeah. Big time. And I’ll keep writing till the day I die.

Crystal: I used to read more blogs, don’t have much time any more but there are a few I read: Laurell K. Hamilton, Tess Gerritsen, Neil Gaiman, Janet Reid (she’s snarky and funny and gives great advice), a couple gluten free/allergy blogs, and Cake Wrecks, which I find absolutely hilarious. A couple personal friends’ blogs, and then I belong to Publisher’s Marketplace but that’s more of an industry site than anything else.

Stacey Smith: Urban fantasy with sex and relationships on the side. :)

Margrete: So glad you love the books!!!

dd03: I get asked this a lot, and the truth is, I have no idea. For one thing, it costs me a LOT of money to commission prints of the secondary characters–I’m not talking about a few hundred, either. He’s a top artist and is so worth his fee, but it’s not something I can have done often, so I wish people would stop thinking that I can just go out and get everybody done in the book. Doesn’t work that way, guys. :) You’ll have to be patient and not expect these things–they are a perk, but not a given.

Sheila R: Astrology: yes, I do believe in it, though I don’t believe in everything being totally predetermined or that everything happens for a focused reason (obviously, there’s a reason behind every action, in terms of–bump the table, knock the vase over, but that doesn’t mean the vase was destined to fall). I’m a Capricorn and talked a little about my planets earlier in the thread. I have a friend who interprets my chart for me. :)

Valerie: HI! One of my best friends lives in Berlin. She was born over there and moved back there in 2000. I miss her. :)

Okay people, thank you for having me and I’ve had a lot of fun! Bright Blessings, enjoy the books, and take care.
    Yasmine

You said that your lived on a bus for several months. Did you write and work on your books during that time? Were there any characters or plot lines that developed while on the bus?

Will there be more interaction between the girls and their dad now?
I am extremely close to mine and always have a soft spot for fathers and daughters.

I’ve read almost all your mysteries - just bought the last one last night (#2 in the series) and Witchling. I’m really enjoying them, and enjoyed your Bitten by Books interview. Happy writing!
