What other paranormal creatures are in your book besides vampires and mages, if any?

Elie, sorry the video didn’t load all the way. That’s not a repeat question at all. Besides vampires and mages, demons and faeries also make up what I call the “dark races.”

Hi Dianne, define difficult. ;) I wrote two books before I wrote Red-Headed Stepchild, which are now moldering on my hard drive. But I was pretty lucky because once I got an agent the submissions process went pretty quickly. RHS sold at auction ten days after it went on submission. But I certainly had my fair share of rejections before I sold. Thanks for pimping the contest!

Rachel, healthy doses of coffee help. But I’m lucky that I’m a full-time writer. My son is in school full-time now, so I have time during the day and at night to write. But the promo sucks up a lot of family time. Luckily, they’re very supportive.

Hello Jaye. Thanks for being here today. I really enjoyed the book.
I love the color of your office. My strange question for you is…what is that item behind your right ear, between the bookcases and above the lamp?

    ……..Spoiler Warning……..I gave a warning now shoo.

The visions that Vinca said she was having are they total hogwash or are they going to come into play in future books?

Hi, Beet! I love the purple too. It’s very calming. The item over my head between the bookcases is a mirror with a crescent moon and suns on it. As for Vinca’s visions, hmm. We’ll just have to see, won’t we? How’s that for a tease? ;)

Jaye - I re-tweeted and shared on FB.

Luv the video interview format - watched the whole thing - interesting way to use media to market.

    Questions:

    Kris? Adam? Or neither?

Since your agent is also an attorney, does he tend to give more business/contract advice or does he makes a lot of creative/editorial suggestions re: plot, characters, etc. the way that most non-attorney agents do?

  31. Comment by Jaye Wells — May 20, 2009 @ 9:48 am

Carmen, um, you know that didn’t occur to me. But thanks. Now I’ll be paranoid every time I do a video. And thank for bringing up the bet. There’s a post at my group blog http://www.leagueofreluctantadults.com where I was publicly challenged by Stacia Kane to dye my hair to look like Sabina’s. I’ve posted at poll at my blog (www.jayewells.com) where people can vote whether I should dye my hair to look like Sabina’s. We’ll see what happens. I find it hard to refuse a public challenge, though.

Hi, Tina. Good question! All my characters are like me in some way. But I wish I was more physically strong like Sabina. The only fight I’ve ever been in was a slap fight with a friend in fifth grade. Not that I want to rumble with anyone, but it’d be nice to at least be able to kick some ass if the situation warranted.

    Hi Jaye,

Welcome to BBB. I was first introduced to Red-Headed Stepchild at In Bed With Books. I am definitely intrigued by it! I’ll be looking out for it in the bookshelves!

I have a question for you. Do you remember the first draft of a full length novel that you wrote? What was the main challenge you faced?

    Thanks.

I’ve already voted in the poll and I RSVPed before the event.

  33. Comment by Jaye Wells — May 20, 2009 @ 9:51 am

Hi Josephine! Kris? Who’s that? Do you mean Clovis? If so, the answer is Clovis for one night of debauchery and Adam for long-term debauchery.

Re: agent–I’m lucky in that he gives me both. He’s a bulldog about contract issues, and he’s a great sounding board for creative matters and beta reading.

My question for Jaye: are you a pantster or a plotter? I guess plotter!

BBB is permalinked on The Qwillery (http://qwillery.blogspot.com). Already follow Jaye on Twitter and Facebook and am a member of her Yahoo Group. And Jaye’s Blog is on my blog’s blog roll. And no I’m not stalking her.

  35. Comment by Jaye Wells — May 20, 2009 @ 9:53 am

Hi Lesley, I do remember the first draft. The main challenge was ignoring my impatience to write the perfect novel (hint: it doesn’t exist), and focus instead on finishing the darned thing. When you’re starting out it’s easy to get anxious and distracted by trying to learn every aspect of craft and the business. But if you can’t sit down and finish something none of that other stuff matters.

  37. Comment by Jaye Wells — May 20, 2009 @ 10:00 am

Hey, Qwill! Thanks so much. That’s a tough question to answer actually. I’m kind of both. The truth is my process is constantly evolving. But I tend to go into a book with a plan, but leave enough room for inspiration to lead me on detours. Then I replot the heck out of the book when I go into revision mode. Lately, though, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about how I work. And after talking to my editor and some author friends, I’m realizing I might actually be what they call a “scene writer.” This means I start out with a handful of very strong scenes as inspiration and my job is to figure out the story from those. I guess that makes me more of a natural pantster, but the idea of having no plan at all makes me feel all itchy. Like I said, not an easy answer since each book is different and things evolve.

Hi Lyda, tough question! I’ve had a variety of jobs already–magazine editor, museum education assistant, marketing for a motivational speaker, corporate drone, full-time mom, etc. and I can say without a doubt being a writer is the best job for me. But if I had to choose something else, I’d probably be a professor of some sort, probably in art history, history or writing.

Dianne, I found him by reading his blog and finding out what he was looking for. Then I submitted a query through his online submission form. He requested a partial and then a full before offering.

Agent Query is a great place to start looking for agents who rep what you write. Another way is to look at the acknowledgement pages of books like yours. Most authors thank their agents. Once you have a list, vet them by googling and checking out the Absolute Watercooler to see what experiences other writers have had. Once you have a list, you send out your queries. These days, it’s so much easier because so many agents take equeries. Just make sure you make note of each agents guidelines before you submit.

Hey Jaye! I want to be a writer myself someday, soon, maybe, since I have a year left at college. I have talked to other authors about the career of writing and was wondering how challenging is it for you to write towards the word count? What kinds of things do you have to focus on to build it up? Do you need several subplots to go along with the plot and if so, how do you work with the subplot so it doesn’t deviate from the main plot?

Wow, look at the books in the background *wide grin*

    Woohoo Pajamma’s rule! Hehe

Jaye, what you said about “bad reviews” brought to mind something my on-line brother once told me. I’m a novice writer, I write more for my enjoyment (and no aims to be published. it’s my hobby, a stress release when the muse is working). But he told me along the same lines you said “Not everyone is going to like what you write, so don’t let them get you worked or riled up. Do you enjoy what you do? Then that’s all that matters. Just continue doing what you do and enjoy.” Wow, all that coming from a twenty-something year old.

Red-Headed Step-child is on my to-buy list whenever I get the chance to go book shopping. I’ve heard some really good reviews from various yahoo groups and blogs about it. And my friend Bama just said “Oh it’s gooood”

What was the first step you took in trying to get published? After writing the story that is. Did you look for an agent or a publisher? Or did you do something else first entirely?

    [Reply]

  67. Comment by Jaye Wells — May 20, 2009 @ 10:49 am

Jessica, it’s great you’re getting started so young. I didn’t start writing fiction until I was 30 and I wish I’d figured out this was my path sooner. Anyway, I don’t really worry about word count. The story is as long as it needs to be. Generally, yes, you need subplots depending on your genre. My subplots usually weave into the main story line in some way. Since you’re just beginning, don’t worry about all the technical aspects yet. Just start writing your stories. You learn a lot more by doing at this point. And then, when you’re ready find a GOOD critique group or partner to give you feedback.

Roanaid, that’s excellent advice about doing what you love. Once your words leave you, you have no control over how people receive them. So you might as well focus on what you have control over, which is writing the stories. Reading is totally subjective and each reader brings their own contexts to their stories.

    I love Incubus too :)

But no… my pregnancies aren’t fun lol. At all. Like diapers and sleepless nights are cupcakes and giggles in comparison. And yet… I’m pregnant again… I seriously need to tattoo my forehead with the words… “REMEMBER THE PAIN!”

    [Reply]

  69. Comment by Jaye Wells — May 20, 2009 @ 10:51 am

Jessica, when I finished my first book, I showed it to my critique group at the time. After i incorporated their feedback, I started querying agents. A had a few requests, but it was pretty clear I wasn’t ready for primetime yet. So I sat down and wrote another book. It was better, but still not there. Pay attention to the feedback you’re getting during submissions. Rinse, repeat. Just don’t give up if this is what you really want to do. Getting published doesn’t happen over night.

    Hi Jaye :)
I do love a good cover, and I remember seeing this one some weeks back. Wondering what the title was all about, but my eye sure feel on it. And I was intrigued.

Q: I (who suck at titles), how do you come up with good ones?

    [Reply]

  71. Comment by Jaye Wells — May 20, 2009 @ 10:54 am

Linda AK, titles are super important. I generally brainstorm them for a long time. For me, a title has to work on several levels. Red-Headed Stepchild worked for this book because it not only referenced Sabina’s situation, but the red-head bit spoke to the world building. Plus it’s unusual for the genre, which makes people pay attention. I was lucky my editor liked the title. Usually there’s a process of compromise and going back to the drawing board on these matters. Don’t get me started on how long it too to find a title for Mage in Black.

Just finished Red-headed Stepchild and I loved it. I desperately want to go back to the world you created, and I see that from the comments (and the sample chapter in the back of my book) Mage In Black is coming out in a year, which seems a painfully long way away. Is there anything you can tell me now to give me a hint about it? A couple of my favorite characters are out of the action at the end of the first book, and I am dying to know if/how their stories continue. Plus, there’s so much to learn about the other side of Sabina’s heritage! And about her friends’. I’m really curious about where you plan to go next.

I’d settle for a teaser page on your website (yep, I searched it thoroughly after finishing the book last Saturday), but if there’s anything you can offer here, I’ll eat it up.

Okay, I’m back. Wheh! I knew there’d be bloodshed in this interview, but I didn’t know it would be my fingers from answering all these great questions. ;) Let me back up where I left off and start answering.

Lesley, I’m an aries so impatience is kind of my thing. However, I’m also very stubborn and like a challenge. That helped. It’s also nice to have supportive friends and family who encouraged me to keep at it.

Beet, I held a contest when I launched my new site. People submitted all sorts of drink recipes. The one that one was spicy just like Sabina.

Rabid Fox, I consider it a huge compliment to be compared to Joss Whedon. I’m a Buffy, Angel and Firefly fan so it’s humbling to have my work even mentioned in the same sentence.

Evelyn, it’s a challenge to keep everything organized. The notebook I mentioned in he video helps keep my worldbuilding straight. And I use a story board to keep track of the plots.

    K. Nelson, just one word? You knwo I write novels, correct? ;) Okay, if i had to choose one word it would be “Awesome.” LOL

Rachel from NJ: Oh lord, I don’t think I could list all those books. Some are my husbands, he’s a huge Fantasy and Science Fiction fan, so there’s lots of that there. As for my books, it’s a little bit of everything: para rom, UF, mystery, literary fiction, narrative nonfiction, etc. Every author I’ve read has inspired me to write. But I have to give props to Kim Harrison. Her Rachel Morgan series was the first UF i ever read and I was hooked. Not sure how many books there will ultimately be in the series, but right now I’m contracted for two more.

Happy early bday to Denise! No worries about the Ward gushing. I love the BDB too.

Seri, I got the title from the saying, “She was beaten like a red-headed stepchild.” I thought it was pretty common, but turns out not everyone has heard it. I just felt it fit the story really well. Plus it’s different, and I like different.

Bea, there’s definitely more ass kicking. ;) But overall, look to see Sabina learning more about who she is and who she’s meant to be. I see this series as a heroine’s journey, where she’s really coming into her own. Of course, there will also be more interesting characters and challenges on this path. Lots of books inspire me from all genres. There’s something to be learned in every book you read.

Elie, I have a Sabina story coming out int he Mammoth Book of Vampire ROmance, vol. 2 anthology this September. It’s a prequel to RHS and sets up background for Mage in Black.

Mary Jordan! Happy birthday, woman! Thanks for stopping in. xoxo

    Thanks, Lorraine.

Zhye, I can’t wait to see Stacia all striped up like a candy cane too.

Cindy, it’s interesting to see what resonates with readers. It’s fascinating to hear other people’s takes on it, especially when they see something I didn’t.

Cheryl, I love boxers. Mine thinks he’s a cat, which is troublesome when he wants to lay on my lap. He weighs 50 lbs.

Robin, the sample chapter at the end of RHS is all I can release right now. But I can tell you that Mage in Black takes place in New York and centers around Sabina trying to get in touch with her mage side. And, yes, some of the characters who are out of play at the end of RHS will come back in one way or another. I’m not syaing it’s in book two, but we’ll see some of them again. How’s that for vague?

Sabrina, lol. Actually RHS was originally a short story (it’s on my web site) and her name was Sabrina. I changed it to Sabina later because I didn’t want people thinking of the teenaged witch when reading about her.

Maigan, glad you found it inspirational. LOL

Debi, that saying was the inspiration for the title. It connects to Sabina’s place in her world, as well as the world-building since all vampires in her world have red hair.

Sorry if this has already been asked in previous comments….But you stated that you make collages for your books with famous peoples and settings. Who have you “envisioned” in your cast.?
BTW…. saw the gun bra… Mario has outdone himself…. the pic I saw has him laughing in the background… he enjoyed himself what about you???
And your comment of the hair dye….. I just dyed mine red for the Kindle2 contest…..
I am too trying to complete my first WIP and hope to someday join the ranks of published authors. How many publishers did you have to submit it to before it got bought ?

    1) got it

2)OK, where to start. I know. I absolutely LOVE your response to the favorite author question. You are so right and the analogy you used is close to home for me. My very large family all say that bookstores are my crack house and I need my fix as often as possible sometimes multiple times a day. I also share the same feeling about books themselves, E books and readers are convienent(sp?) but cannot compare to the feel, smell, taste? of a real book.

I really like your POV on Lilith and the Garden of Eden. Also the Apple twist to the Vampire Rules.

Would love to have a job where I could sit around in my pj w/ my hair in a chip clip. Of course I would have to be able write, which I cannot. I can read and enjoy it but I don’t enjoy writing. Also either I would have to cut off most of my hair on they would have to come out with an industrial size chip clip.

I already have the gun bra pics and am waiting for the video.

Will be keeping an eye out for your personal wine lable, especially the Shiraz.

I also was very surprised and happy when I saw the name Sabina being used one of my best friends has the same name.

    3)Already subscribed and verified.

4)I voted and entered WWYD4aK2….still trying to make a video though.

I have yet to read Redheaded Stepchild, but it’s on my TBR list, and I am already a subscriber to the Red-headed Stepchildren Yahoo Group. Hey guys! I’m back and settled in for a night of answering your probes, err, I mean questions.

Shell asked who I envision as the cast. Now, some of these aren’t actors, so if a movie was ever made I’d have to think of some new people. But, Adam is Ryan Reynolds (in Blade Trinity, if you haven’t seen it, please do yourself a favor and get it). Sabina I envisioned as Shirley Manson, but I think the cover artists did a great job capturing her. Vinca–I can see Zooey Deschanel, who is adorable. Clovis is Trent Reznor (hot, hot, hot). I don’t know ho could pull off Giguhl. Any suggestions?

As for your question about submissions, I didn’t submit to publishers, my agent did. But he sent it to a handful for the initial submission and we went to auction a little over a week later.

Koren, if and when I write a weremonkey story, you can bet your sweet bippy there’ll be a weregibbon. ;)

Kara, any excuse to buy books is a good one.

Jacqueline, I feel your pain. My TBR list makes me cry. I need another set of eyes and an extra brain.

Katie, that’s a hard question. So much depends on how the story unfolds as I’m writing. But I think five is a good number. Just don’t hold me to that. ;)

Hi Ester, wasn’t RT a blast?

Kimberely asked: “what is one element of your fictional world that you wish could be real, and what is one element that you are glad isn’t?” Wow, what an awesome question. Let’s see. I wish we could really tell our enemies by their scents or physical traits, i.e. al vamps have red hair. But I’m glad vampires as I write them don’t exist. It would suck to have to bathe in apple juice every day–hell on the hair, you know?

First, after watching the interview, I am now going to make sure it grab this book the next time I am near Borders, which will be this weekend. I have rainbow stars around my ankle. I hate needles, but didn’t mind the tattoo, go figure. No worries, you don’t need to reveal your secret tattoo spot. Hi Sarai, I don’t really remember not reading. When I was in kindergarten my mom managed a bookstore, so I got the reading bug early. I definitely read about the paranormal first. I didn’t start seriously writing fiction until I turned thirty, but I discovered Anne Rice in high school and I read a lot of fantasy as a kid. Still, I never thought I’d write about the paranormal. In fact, I thought I’d write historical fiction. But I took a writing class and the teacher said to go home and look at my bookshelves to see what I read the most of. Lo and behold, I realized I’d been consuming books about vamps for years. So I gave it a try and love it.

I enjoyed the video interview! I commented earlier this month saying I’d like to see more of them and I still think it’s a great idea! Like others have already said (dang, that is what sucks about showing up late to a party like this! Everyone has already said what you were going to say. ;) ) Anyways, like others have said - it is lovely to put a face to a name! :) Fantastic answer to the question about your favorite book!

I LOVE the were-monkey idea and I’ll buy that book the day it is released. Please hurry up and write it! :D

I haven’t read your book YET - but I did just purchase a copy. It was on my shorter “TBR” list and I can’t wait to read it! I told myself I was taking a break from buying books until I make a dent - but hey, I’m a bookworm with no willpower!

That reminds me of a favorite quote. I have it on my LibraryThing profile:

“Where is human nature so weak as in the bookstore?” - Henry Ward Beecher (1813 - 1887) (funny how it is over 100 years old and still true! ;) ) I also like the one about when he has a little bit of money, he buys books. THEN food and clothing. (Erasmus, I believe)

I will check back.. I just wanted to stop by and say hi!

You lovely doll, you! I’ve read Red Headed Stepchild and will commence with the stalking *vbeg*

I LOVED the book! I don’t think this is a spoiler, so I’ll ask… You open the story in a section of L.A. that isn’t that well known to visitors. Being that you’re from Texas, I’d like to know how you captured that area & it’s ambiance? I felt like I was in that part of town and truly admire your detail. I go to that area when I have free time and, unless you’ve been there alot, you can’t truly capture its spirit the way I think you did.

I’m also here to try to win, *smirk*. Does it count that I joined you on MySpace, Twitter, your Yahoo list group and’ve annoyed you no end, prior to this contest?

Kaz! You’re my favorite stalker. I’m glad you found the descriptions of LA authentic. I have been there a few times, but I relied pretty heavily on the internet to fill in some gaps. It’s amazing the level of detail avaiable abotu cities now online. Between Googlemaps, historic sites (there’s a pictoral history of the SUnset Strip online, for example), and business sites it’s possible for a savvy researcher to fake it. For example, Ewan’s bar is based on an actual bar. I just changed a few key details and the name to fit my purposes. It also helps to have friends who live there. Right now I’m writing about New York, and I just got back from there so I have lots of fresh details. And of course, between my agent, my editor and my best friend who lives there, I’ve got plenty of people to call with random questions.

Thanks to everyone else who commented and entered the contest. Good luck!

K Hager, some of my favorite authors include JR Ward, Kim Harrison, Anne Rice, Michael Chabon, Brett Easton Ellis, Dorothea Benton Frank, Janet Evanovich–the list goes on and on.

Takara, my music taste is pretty eclectic. But when I’m writing Sabina’s books I tend to listen to a lot of Marilyn Manson, NIN, Garbage, Catherine Wheel, Peter Murphy, etc.

Michelle B, I find inspiration every where. My most recent inspiration is a trip I just took to New York. Mage in Black is set there and the trip gave me a ton of ideas for the story.

That was a great interview! And that was a bucket o’ coffee - I’m not surprised at all that you go to starbucks when it’s raining, Jaye! I think your views on e-readers are pretty interesting, though I’m not surprised when I hear authors are in support of the format - I think e-readers really allow for those impulse buys to happen a lot easier, which therefore increases the odds of your books selling!

My cousin wants to know. If you were to stab a vamp in the heart with a stick that once held a candy apple would it work to kill them?

    [Reply]

  228. Comment by Jaye Wells — May 27, 2009 @ 9:29 am

Koren, Hmm, good question. Who doesn’t love the timeless carnival treat of candy apples or their tasty cousin, the caramel apple? The trick is that there’s two parts to killing a vamp. First, you have to rob them of their immortality by introducing the apple into their systems. The stick in question might do the trick, but it’s a stretch at best since the apple essence has to get in their blood stream. The second step is actually killing them. Getting a thin stick through layers of muscles and ribs is tough. Now, if the sticks are made of apple wood you’re good. It’s a really hard wood that might do the job. But if I might make a suggestion though? Avoid carnivals where vampires hang out.

  229. Comment by Koren Cota — May 27, 2009 @ 12:04 pm

That is what I figured but it was an interesting thought. We have been sitting around thinking of apple delivery systems….An apple chip launcher, but then the question is do really dry, baked/fried chips of apple retain enough essence…or instead of a potato gun an apple gun?
