The Dawning by Judy Gill

In a post-cataclysmic, future Earth, a second confrontation is building amongst the survivors. The Talents, those born with psi or psychic abilities are being hunted by the Normals who fear and hate them. On the run from a determined hunter, Serena, a gentle telepathic empath, and Andrew, who she once loved but can no longer trust since he turned himself and her sadly disabled brother over to the Territorial Government, join their abilities to protect the baby Grace who is the primary target for the Normals search.
Think “The Fugitive” with a very strong psychic element. Now add in a beautiful little toddler who needs a Mama to love. The Dawning is one of the most intriguing novels I have read in a very long time. I love the society Gill has created out of the chaos and disaster of the Bombardments which poisoned the land and let lose the pathogens.
The character of Serena is so exquisitely drawn the reader will have no trouble crawling into her skin to live the event through her eyes. Andrew, the gifted and capable knight to the rescue, knows his own strengths and how to use them. The Presence which hunts them is distractingly competent and menacing yet filled with good intentions. Andrew is a traitor to his employers; Serena needs training to give her a better life than one she has on the run; and Baby Grace must be rescued and returned unharmed.
There is enough action and strong character development for a film adaptation of this novel, and the rugged Northwest where the story takes place is a very fitting setting for story as grand as the mountains are tall.
