Interview:
Hi Maria!
Welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!
I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been very interesting to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a writer! Readers, if you haven’t done so already please stop by and get your copy of Maria’s AWESOME release book one in the Glass series, Storm Glass.
BBB: What are the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects of writing?
MVS: The most challenging is writing the first draft. I struggle to put down the sentences, but once the first draft is finished, I enjoy the revision process. The most rewarding has been reader email. I love getting emails from my readers and I answer every single one.
BBB: Was switching publishers from Luna to Mira in the middle of your first series frustrating? what were the best and worst things about the switch?
MVS: It was a little frustrating because my readers wanted Fire Study as soon as possible, and the switch moved Fire Study back six months. I kept getting emails encouraging me to write faster, but the book was finished. The worst thing was the long gap between Fire Study and Magic Study. The best thing about the switch is Mira has a larger marketing budget and I’m able to reach more readers and go on small promotional tours.
BBB: Your newest Glass series is also set in Sitia, how closely are your two series related? And what drew you back to writing about the same world?
MVS: The two are intimately related. Storm Glass picks up five years after the events in Fire Study. But Storm Glass is from Opal’s point of view. After Fire Study, I wanted to write a different book - one not in the Study world. My editor suggested I write another Study book to keep up the momentum. She mentioned Opal as a potential character.
I liked Opal and she surprised me by how valuable she became in Fire Study, but I couldn’t think of a story idea with her. I was explaining this to my editor and was literally in mid-sentence when the idea for Storm Glass popped into my mind. At first we were going to title the book Glass Study or Crystal Study, but I wanted a new title since I had a new main protagonist.
BBB: What do you feel are the benefits of the new electronic readers such as Kindle 2 or Sony Digital Book Reader
to the environment?
MVS: The biggest benefit is reducing the amount of paper needed to produce books. Less paper equals less chemicals in the water around the paper mills and less air pollution – it’s definitely more environmental friendly.
BBB: What impact do electronic readers create on the bottom line for authors in the end? Do you feel they have a negative impact or positive, or no impact at all that you can see?
MVS: This is a hard question to answer. I know I don’t get as much money from the electronic sales, but, in the future, as e-books become more popular, author contracts will adjust to even the royalties out. I’m more concerned about gaining readers than in money, and I think the electronic readers are a positive aspect in that regard.
BBB: How do you keep track of your worldbuilding?
MVS: I have a notebook for each of my books. In the notebook I write down details of the world, character personality traits and physical traits, a list of names used in that book, and other assorted details. I’ll also refer back to my published books. Eventually, I’d like to combine all those notebooks into a “bible” so I don’t have to search through all the books, looking for one important detail. My bible would be a binder with dividers so I can add information.
BBB: Who or what inspires you to write?
MVS: When I first started writing, my critique group inspired me to submit one chapter a month to them. Now, my readers inspire me. Knowing they enjoy the books and will discuss them is very motivating.
BBB: Can you tell us what your next release (s) will be? And do you have stand alone titles forthcoming? How many books do you plan to write in the Glass series?
MVS: My next release will be Sea Glass in September 2009. Sea Glass
is the second book in the Glass series and, so far, I have three books planned for that series.
Next spring, my book Inside Out will be released. Inside Out is going to be marketed to young adult readers, but the only difference to my adult titles is the length. Inside Out is shorter than my other books, otherwise I wrote it the same. This is also the start of a series and the second book, Outside In will be released in 2011.
I try and make every book I write a stand alone story. My biggest complaint about trilogies is that middle book is all middle, nothing is resolved or tied up at the end. I make sure each book I write has a beginning, middle and end. There may be a few threads dangling at the end, but the main plot is tied up.
BBB: If you could share one talent with any character from any of your books, what would it be? would it be magical or mundane?
MVS: I would love to be able to heal people like Yelena can.
BBB: Ten years passed between the beginning of your first novel and it finally hitting the shelves, what are some of the best and worst things that came out of that wait? Any inspiring words for aspiring
novelists?
MVS: Poison Study has benefited the most from that wait. Being my first book, I spent a lot of years thinking about the story and characters, I had plenty of time to revise and make sure all the holes in plot logic had been filled and explained. The worst thing about the time was not knowing if anyone would buy the story. Also frustrating in an exciting way was the two years between signing the contract for Poison Study
and having an actual book in hand. Those two years felt like ten, and my kids didn’t help by asking almost daily when the book was coming! It felt like the longest pregnancy in history.
Persistence is my biggest advice. I’d been writing for ten years and submitting for eight before I sold anything. Learn the craft of writing as well as the business of writing and attend writer’s conferences and classes if you can. Consider that time an apprenticeship. Be wary of predators, if someone is asking you for money proceed with the utmost caution. Get feedback on your stories from fellow writers before submitting. Joining a critique group is very helpful. I also find that if I let a story sit on my desk for a few weeks I can pick out all the problems, typos and inconsistencies easier. And I agree whole heartily with Stephen King’s advice in his book, On Writing. He wrote, “If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot.” And don’t give up! Ever!
BBB: What was it like switching from primarily fantasy to paranormal to write Night Vision for The Mammoth Book of Paranormal Romance? Have you written any other paranormal stories?
MVS: It was harder than I thought it would be. When I first sent Trisha Night Vision, she returned it with a nicely worded email that basically said it sucked! I had written more of a science fiction story than a paranormal. I was too scientific in explaining the main characters powers. So I rewrote and revised and poor Trisha nursed me the whole way. I’m really pleased how the story turned out.
I have written another paranormal. It’s a teen vampire story for another anthology titled, The Eternal Kiss and due out in September 2009. The story is titled, Sword Point and it’s about a 17-year-old fencer who arrives at her new training academy to discover that not all her fellow fencers are training for the Olympics.
BBB: If you could shapeshift, what animal would you be? And why?
MVS: A red tailed hawk. We have a couple living near the fields behind my house. I love watching them fly and dive. Being able to fly would be wonderful. The only other animal I’d consider is the cheetah – fastest animal on land – need I say more?
BBB: You have received numerous awards for your books, which one remains nearest and dearest to your heart?
MVS: While I’m honored and thrilled to have received those awards, the “award” that I hold the nearest and dearest to my heart is a beautiful young woman in Texas. She emailed me and explained how reading Poison Study helped her conquer her depression and changed her mind about committing suicide. She was inspired by Yelena’s perseverance. She was doing a Tuesdays with Morrie-type project in school and asked me to be her Morrie. I’ve been emailing her for years now and even spent a day with her and her parents last year. I have her graduation picture on my desk and when people ask me who she is, I smile and say, “That’s my girl.”
BBB: What is your favorite quote of all time?
MVS: “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.” By Thomas Edison. I also have a page on my website with a list of my favorite writing quotes. Here’s the link: http://www.mariavsnyder.com/tips/quotes.php

Hi
Reader from Finland here.
The book is looking good and sounds so interesting.
My question would which authors you love to read?
Maria,
Welcome to bittenbybooks! Both series sound fantastic! I will definitely have to get them on my wishlist!
My question would be this: if you had to pick on place to spend the first part of your immortality, where would it be and why?
Thanks for stopping by!

hi, Maria! thanks for joining us today. i love your “Study” books! my question is what three books would you take with you on a desert island?
(rachel, twittered, Facebooked, livejournaled, posted link on my blog (ohkamikaze.net), added maria’s newsletter, added her to my blog roll, and BBB is always on my blogroll)
Great interview! I LOVE the Study books and can’t wait to get my hands on Storm Glass!!
I love hearing about a writer’s process…. and I’d LOVE to get a peek at those notebooks! I think they’d be fascinating.
I linked this interview on my blog today
Confessions of a Book Habitue
And I added Bitten By Books as a friend on GoodReads just the other day.
Storm Glass plus all three “Study” books are on Storycasting - 2 people already want James McAvoy as Valek. What kinds of actresses did you see in your head for Yelena and Opal?
Great contest, and a very good interview. I’m unfamiliar with Snyder’s work, but after reading this–and the review for one of her earlier titles–I’m going to have to keep an eye out for her stuff.
I’ve since added this blog to my blogroll and look forward to reading more reviews and interviews. The notebooks Snyder keeps for each of her novels must be monstrous in size, judging by how in-depth these series seem to be. One can only imagine, I suppose.

Very good interview, always great to read and learn about other Authors. I also checked out her book reviews and have add a few of her books to my “to read” list. Very interesting story lines.
Great interview. My question to you is, once the idea for a new book/series is swirling in your head what is the absolute first thing you put down to paper? Is it an outline, is it a map, or is it the book itself? Thanks.
Maria,
I loved Poison Study and just purchased Magic Study. I’m looking forward to reading it. I have to say that I almost didn’t start the series because it was in the romance section of my local bookstore. I rarely read romance books (ok, ok, make that never have) although I do enjoy romantic elements to any story. But your book made me realize that a good story is always worth a read regardless of where the bookstores shelve it.
Keep up the good work,
Bryan
I can’t wait for Storm Glass. I like the worlds you have created.

Maria,
Thank you so SO much for being here. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE your work! The Study series is one of the few that I read, that I am able to share with my daughter! I will be back later to blog, twit and all! Just wanted to say HI!
I enjoyed reading your interview. I also enjoyed your page of quotes. I am always looking for quotes for my e-mail signature. Bird by bird, also great, is a little long for that. But…
I did find a quote by EB White that I like “Be obscure clearly”
Hi Maria,
Thanks for the interview. I love learning about authors:)

Which country in your story would you rather live in Sitia or in Ixia and why?
I very much enjoyed your interview Maria!
I have all of your study books but I haven’t read them yet. I am going to move them right to the top of my gigantic TBR pile now!!!
I should have read them sooner as I have several friends on my favorite blog/book review site that have raved about your Study books!!
Oh and I will be getting the rest of your books too!!
It must be so rewarding to know that your writing has helped someone to conquer their depression and change their mind about committing suicide. That is definitely some powerful writing going on.
I’m glad I caught your interview and this contest. I have a funny feeling that you are going to be one of my fav authors once I read your books….which will be very soon.
Thanks
Shelley
PS I live in Canada.
Hi Maria,
Warm welcomes and glad to have you at Bitten by Books today. *^_^*
Now for my question, if you had to have a job outside of the writing field, what would it be and why? Oh and I’m sorry, but lion-tamer has already been claimed ::wink::
I’ve been meaning to buy these books for a while, I hear such great things! So I just wanted to let you know that this review totally reminded/convinced me to buy the Study books. Now I can’t wait to read them! Also, these books are so pretty. I know that covers aren’t the most important thing about a book, but these really caught my attention! And I’d also love to hear Maria talk about what books and authors she loves to read or is inspired by.
- Violetreads (Nicole E.), U.S.
The covers of these are so pretty! Also Maria seems super-nice ^_^
BTW my question is putting aside the environmental or monetary benefits of the kindle, how do you feel about actually using them?
(I feel really weird not turning pages.)
Also I’m Canadian

I am quite intrigued about Maria’s entry for the vampire anthology coming out in September. That is going to be a good story to read. Different premise and main character.
Hadn’t really planned on buying THE MAMMOTH BOOK OF PARANORMAL ROMANCE, but I am more inclined now. Thanks Maria! My husband will be so pleased to see more books on Mt Git’r'Read. = )

Very interesting interview…..
Hello! Sorry to be late to the party - I’ve been traveling from LA to Arizona for my book tour
I’m really excited to be here - this is a wondeful site!
Now - on to the questions…
I would spend the first part of my immortality in Europe - I alwasy wanted to live there and explore all the countries.
I would own a Phoenix - why? Less food and smaller droppings ;>
Three books I would take to a desert island are a book on survival, a how to build a radio from natural materials, and a desert island cookbook ;>
As for actresses - I think Summer Glau would make a great Yelena and I’ve no favorite for Opal -(Maybe Keira Knightly) I don’t watch a lot of TV or go to the movies as much as I did before the writing career and mom thing
When I get a story idea the first thing I write down is the idea and any other info I think of to get it started.
Boredom motivated me to write Poison Study - I needed to look busy at work when we had no work -so I started jotting down ideas for stories (shhh… don’t tell!)
I’d live in Ixia - Why? Uniforms - no need to worry about what to wear and Hello! Men in uniforms - can’t beat that ;>
If I couldn’t write, I’d be a glass artist. I’ve learned how versatile a material glass is and seen somew onderful pieces - in fact, tomorrow I’m going to see Chihuly: The Nature of Glass exhibit at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phonenix!
As for the ebook reader - I do have a Sony eReader that Sony gave me for free - They put Poison Study as the free book on all the eReaders in the UK and this was part of the deal. I…er…haven’t used it yet - I like holding a real book in hand and spend way too much time staring at a screen - but it will be great for long trips where I don’t want to carry too much weight.
Guilty pleasure?? Sun Chips - original - ’nuff said. The Song of Music song haunted me throughout middle school and high school - my teachers thought they were being clever. West Side Story - I’m still hearing that one from men I meet - they all think they’re clever, too - I humor them before whipping out the pepper spray (just kidding - a good palm-heel strike to the adam’s apple usually does the trick).
I hope I answered all the questions - If I missed any, please let me know!
Maria
PS: I’m typing on my little netbook - so sorry for the typos!
Hey Maria!
Safe travel and fun on your tour. How long will you be on the road?
If you want to donate that reader, we have some reviewers here who could really put it to good use. lol
What is the hardest part of being on tour?
Hi Maria! I love the Study series and have been one of your “Book Commandos” from way back. I wanted to ask; what is your favorite part about promoting a book, and what is your least favorite part? And this is a comment rather than a question, but I really love how much you seem to get into the research you do for your books—it adds an extra element to my enjoyment of the story, I think.
Oh, and I’m in the US.
I love the idea of a character named Opal as the MC for a book called Storm Glass, given the gem-lore of opals containing frozen lightning. Do work any of that type of lore into your novels?
(As always, BBB is on my blog roll.)
Rachel, I joined Maria’s facebook fan page, but didn’t get an e-mail confirmation. Does it still count?
I’m back - after answering a ton of emails. I really enjoy getting emails from readers and I make sure to answer every single one even though it makes for some very late nights
I did miss a question - it was the very first one! It was about authors and who I read. Well - I like Rachel Caine, Mindy Klasky, Jeri Smith-Ready, Sebastin Junger, Barbara Hambly, Kate Elliot, Harlan Coben, Dick Francis, C. E. Murphy and Rick Riordan.
New questions: I’ll be in AZ until Thurday the 30th, but I’m in and out throughout May and June (to see my full and insane schedule - go to http://www.mariavsnyder.com/appearances.php
The hardest part of being on tour is being away from my family. My daughter in particular as she’s very good at bestowing guilt - my son is 14 and acts like he doesn’t care and my husband is happy to have the kids to himself
But I do love meeting readers and booksellers and interacting with adults instead of being alone with my computer - lol!
I didn’t know about the lore with the opals! How cool is that?? I’m going to do some more research! Otherwise, the whole weather element was just me being a weather geek
Have to prove to my parents we didn’t waste money on college!
Maria

Great to have you here! You are my best friend’s absolute favorite author. She found you at Borders and made it through all the “Study” books in a week. : )
I don’t have a question so much as a comment: thank you for writing such an intriguing series that you got my friend, a mother of 5 who rarely has time to breathe let alone read, to sit down and enjoy life for a while.

I so can’t wait for this release! I love LOVED the Study series (and am hoping there’ll be more) and I have no doubt Storm Glass will be just as great.
1. I was saving up my money for a Kindle, but I may have to purchase the Study books for this contest.
2. So my question is, while nothing to do with Storm Glass but equally important (at least to me) - will there be more of Valek and Yelena? I really want to see them together again.
4. Done or it will be as soon as I get done posting this. I’ve also linked your reviews to mine as well.
5. Already subscribed. Does that mean I was automatically entered?
6. Oh you know I’m pimping out your contests and interviews.
Here’s the link for the one today - http://www.literaryescapism.com/2009/04/28/2771/. I’ll also mention it on facebook and at my Yahoo group. Do you want those links?
7. I’m already your friend.
8. I didn’t know she had a facebook fan page! I was already in one of the many Study groups, but now I am definitely there. I even left a comment. I’ve already joined her newsletter.
9. I have tweeted it.
10. Maria’s website and blog are on Literary Escapism’s blog roll.
Hi Maria,
Just wanted to stop in and say hi! Enjoyed reading your interview and answers.
Since I already have Storm Glass (a signed copy, hehe!) please don’t include me in the drawing. But I’m itching to get my hands on Sea Glass. Congrats on another great series!

Hi there, USA here
I liked what she said about her most meaningful award came from someone who (thanks to reading about a persistant would-be suicide) struggled with depression, changed her mind about taking that final step and became persistant to live. How wonderful to have such a positive effect on someone!
Hi Maria,
I was turned on to your books by my best friend who had gotten your books from the library. She was correct in that they were an excellent series. I grabbed all three of the Study Series from the library and couldn’t stop reading until I was done with the last book. I don’t have Storm Glass yet, but it is in my TBB list and I cant wait to read about Opal’s story.
Keep up the great work, and I look forward to reading more of your work.

Hi Maria,
Nice to meet you! The books sound great.
Hi Maria,
Nice to hear from you here! Even though I haven’t read Storm Glass I plan on doing so very very soon because I just couldn’t get enough of Yelena. My question is, “How are you able to write such long stories? Do you sit for hours just writing what comes to you or do you brainstorm then go back through and piece it together?” Thanks!
Liz E.
Hello again! Another great batch of questions
Yelena and Valek will be coming back. I don’t know when or if they’ll be in a novel or short story - but they will have more adventures.
Strangest question? Hmmm… will have to think about that one. Although a student once asked me flat out how much money I make from writing - that one threw me for a moment.
As for how I write long stories, I usually have an idea and a starting point. When I’m writing, I’ll go 4-6 hours a day and write a scene or a chapter. When I run out of story, I brainstorm for the next couple of chapters and sometimes when I’m writing an idea will pop out and I’ll have plenty of juice for the next couple of days.
I’ll stop back again and hopefully have the answer to the strangest question
Hey Maria, I love your books. I have Poison Study and Fire Study and I can’t wait for Storm Glass. My question is where did you come up with the concept for your Storm Glass series of books?
I’m already subscribed to the bitten by books newsletter, I’ve posted this contest on my myspace blog (www.myspace.com/ice_83), I have added bitten by books and maria to by friends list on Good Reads, and signed up for Study Buddies on Good Reads and last but not least I’m already a member of the blood bank.

Hi Rachel and Maria! How funny is it that I was JUST looking at Maria’s website and then saw this giveaway?! Storm Glass sounds fantastic and I’d love to read it.
My question is: If you could collaborate with any famous author, living or dead, who would it be, why them, and what kind of book would you write?

Hi Maria,
New question
I have been writing for years, never did do anything with it though. But what advice would you have for a wannabe author?
(rachel: tweeted this)
I’m always on the lookout for the next book to read, this looks like a good one.
Hello! I’m checking in before I go to a signing at the Poisoned Pen bookstore in AZ (great name for a bookstore).
The idea for Storm Glass was started by my editor. I wanted to write a whole new story and world after I finished Fire Study, but she wanted me to write another Study-type book. She mentioned Opal as a potential character and I was in mid-sentence telling her why I couldn’t when the idea popped into my head. To link Opal with the Stormdancers.
As for who I would collaborate with - I love books with humor so I would want to team up with Mary Janice Davidson - the Undead and Unwed author. Those books about a reluctant vampire queen are just fun to read. We’d write some goofy book about a hybrid superhero and it probably wouldn’t be fit for publication, but we’d have a blast writing it.
Advice for an aspiring author - don’t call yourself a wannabe - if you write - you’re a writer. I do have lots of advice on my website. Here’s a link: http://www.mariavsnyder.com/tips
And I did a series of advice blogs on my MySpace blog. You need to dig back to the summer of 2007 - here are the dates of the series in 2007 - Part 1 - July 3 / Part 2 - July 23 / Part 3 - Aug. 2 / Part 4 - Sept. 12 / Part 5 - Oct. 2 / and Part 6 - Dec. 7. I also have one about writing a plot synopsis on March 18, 2008 and one on writing Query Letters on September 12, 2008. Here’s the link: http://blog.myspace.com/mariavsnyder
Otherwise, keep writing and reading and submitting - don’t give up because of rejections - we all get rejections.
this looks very interesting,
these books sound great! I’ll have to check them out!
Interesting Interview. Thanks Maria for writing such a great series! I listened to all three Study books on Audible last year. I liked them so much I had to get the books for keepers! I am looking forward to the Glass books! MarthaE

I commented on the four reviews! Since I had read the trilogy, my comments are more in the nature of “lovin’” encouragement! I didn’t see The Eternal Kiss at Maria’s site though??
OH I friended BBB at Goodreads and will follow instructions regarding the confirmation! Thanks!
Reading unlocks the mind.

What an interesting interview. I’m new to reading this catagory of literature so my question to Maria would be which authors (besides herself) should I be reading?
Thanks!
