Unholy Night by Candice Gilmer

Marissa Van Dyke can’t remember how she got home from the bar that night one month ago, but she has been having disturbing dreams ever since and still has the knot on her head to proclaim something had happened. She lost her family tragically three years ago on Halloween and it has been her private day of mourning ever since and she is very reluctant to go out when her friend Deanna insists they go to their friends Dale and Kristy’s for their Halloween bash. It seems especially wrong when she finds herself suddenly and intensely attracted to Neil Drigan.

Neil has been having nightmares of a woman and her scent, floral, female, and death for a month and the lack of sleep is starting to wear on him. Dale might tease him about the dreams being a sign that he is about to meet his mate, but Neil is very skeptical. Meeting Marissa at the Halloween party, feeling the intense heat, and learning to stand by her side as she works through her past is all part of being a Mate, but will he be able to stand by her side after she learns he is a werewolf and that lots of other things go bump in the night?

In a world where the momentary words of psychics at parties carry weight, Knights Templars lay the law for Mythicals (which come in every shape, size and form), and vampires hunt the night, a werewolf will love a woman and a woman will have to decide what is truly a monster.

I liked the idea of the Templars and the world they govern, it is original and I would love to learn more of both. The emotional upheaval wasn’t as well written as it could have been, but it fit the story’s length and I also liked the idea of a girls night out when the guys are howling at the moon and would have liked to see that expanded on more. All in all this is a fun, quick read that keeps a good pace and will leave you wanting more from this society, people, and family.
