A big welcome to our readers today! Be sure to read to the end of the interview to find out how to WIN the fabulous prize being offered up. The contest is open to readers US/CAN/UK/Australia!
NOTE: This is not a fixed time event, the post just goes live at 10:00 am CDT. You can stop by any time during the day or evening and leave your questions and comments over the next two days. The CONTEST portion of this event runs for FIVE days and ends at 11:59 pm PDT 4/20/09.
Interview:
Hi S.J.!
Welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!
I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been very interesting to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a writer! Readers, if you haven’t done so already please stop by and get your copy of S.J.’s AMAZING upcoming release book one in the Marked series Eve of Darkness.
BBB: What are the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects of writing?
S.J.D: Challenging - being creative on cue to meet deadlines. Rewarding - typing THE END. I never quite believe I’m going to get there until I do.
BBB: What kind of research did you have to do to create the story world for Eve. How much of your research was used?
S.J.D: I’ve had to research the Christian Bible, non-canonized texts that weren’t included in the Bible, and texts from other religions. I used all of it and have so much more yet to use…
BBB: What drew you to the story of Cain and Abel?
S.J.D: The story idea popped into my head fully formed, so it wasn’t something I played with. One day, it was just there. However, I’ve always thought that there must be more to the story of Cain and Abel than what’s commonly known.
BBB: What do you feel are the benefits of the new electronic readers such as Kindle 2 or Sony Digital Book Reader
to the environment?
S.J.D: That would depend on how much post-consumer waste is used to create today’s paper. I’m not sure. Electronics aren’t entirely environmentally friendly. As technology improves, we swap out the old for the new. One hundred million cell phones are replaced each year; many of those end up in landfills where their parts corrode and cause environmental contamination. Is that better than cutting down trees to print books? I really don’t know.
BBB: What impact do electronic readers create on the bottom line for authors in the end? Do you feel they have a negative impact or positive, or no impact at all that you can see?
S.J.D: Right now, the royalty rate on ebooks in most NY contracts is terrible. I appreciate getting my books in as many readers’ hands as I can, but when I start “losing” money, it’s tough. Hopefully, publishing will catch up with technology and authors will be paid a fair royalty on their e-format books.
BBB: What made you decide to write under so many pen names? Do you ever find yourself forgetting which pen name is for which genre of books?
S.J.D: Sylvia writes romance. S. J. writes non-romance. Livia writes the Sapphire series. So I never forget, no. *g* They’re all very different to me.
It was very important to me to make the distinction between romance and non-romance. I’m all for forewarning readers about what they’re going to get. The Livia pen name was created at the insistence of my editor, who worried that readers would become confused between my historical and fantasy romance releases.
BBB: Do you work on multiple manuscripts at the same time with your different pen names, or do you finish one “voice” before moving on to another?
S.J.D: I used to work on multiple books at once, but now I do my best to tackle one at a time.
BBB: How do you feel about having three books in a series released so near each other? Is it more stressful or is it like ripping off a band aid–the quicker you do it, the better it is?
S.J.D: I wish they were spread out, but it’s not stressful to have them together. I don’t expect too much crossover. Romance readers want their romance. Historical romance readers don’t always like fantasy romance. Fantasy readers often don’t like too much romance. Since I expect all three pen names will appeal to different demographics, I’m not as concerned about the books “cannibalizing” each other, which would be my biggest stressor.
BBB: Can you tell us what your next release (s) will be? And do you have stand alone titles forthcoming?
S.J.D: I keep a listing of all my upcoming releases for all pen names here: http://www.sylviaday.com/coming-soon/ Both of my 2009 historicals are stand-alones. The rest are installments in series.
BBB: What is your greatest inspiration?
S.J.D: My mother. She came to the United States from Japan all by herself and raised two daughters as a single parent. I can’t imagine how much courage that must have taken.
BBB: How do you keep track of your world building, do you have a tried and true system?
S.J.D: I have folders or “bibles” that contain my notes, as well as the pages of proper nouns, common phrases, etc. that the copy editors make with each book.
BBB: Is there any chance of a threesome between the brothers and Eve in the future?
S.J.D: No way! Neither Eve, Cain nor Abel would ever go for that. Not their style.
BBB: If you could shapeshift, what animal would you be? And why?
S.J.D: A dolphin, I think. I’d love to glide through the water with as much speed and grace as they do.
BBB: Which genre do you enjoy writing in the most?
S.J.D: I really don’t have a preference. I consider myself a storyteller. The time and setting is mutable depending on the story I want to tell.
BBB: What is your all time favorite paranormal/urban fantasy book?
S.J.D: Ah… that’s tough. I love so much of Stephen King’s supernatural horror and there a few books from Dean Koontz that I adore, too. I love Patricia Briggs, especially her Alpha and Omega series.
BBB: You are stranded on a desert island and can choose two things to have an endless supply of. Which one of these would you choose chocolate or books? You pick the 2nd item.
S.J.D: Books. Not sure what the second thing would be yet. I’d have to think on that…
BBB: What is your favorite quote of all time?
S.J.D: “Dance as if no one were watching, sing as if no one were listening, and live every day as if it were your last.”

Welcome to Bitten By Books! We’re very glad to have you.
Do you think having pen names has helped or hurt your marketability? I’ve been considering using a pen name (if I ever get published) and wondered if you had any insight.
You mentioned that S. J. writes non-romance. Does that mean that your Eve series is strictly a Fantasy/Sci-fi or do you weave in a little romance?
[Reply]
Loved getting to know more about you today. I love your blogs on Murder She Writes. Look forward to hearing more from you. Have a great day.

Yay, SJ! Stopping by to support you and to tell everyone to go get book one in this series, so that if you win you can read them in order. Eve of Darkness is great!

Hi, thanks for joining us today
What surprised you the most about researching religion for this series? any facts you’d care to share?
oh, and is this series set in the present or is it futuristic? It sounds really good

Hey Sylvia/S.J.!
I mentioned you in my interview with Rachel, lol. I had no idea you were going to be here this week. Congrats on the upcoming releases!

Thanks for stopping by Bitten by Books. This series sound great. I myself have always wondered if there was more to Cain and Abel stories… I personally would like there to be.
So which one is your favorite Cain or Abel?
[Reply]
booklover1335 - Thank you!
Jackie B - Having a pseudonym makes it harder to keep a collective audience, but if the genres are different enough the lack of crossover affects the demographic anyway, so that’s something keep in mind.
There are romantic elements in the Eve books, but romance is not the focus and readers shouldn’t expect a HEA in each book. The Marked series is Eve’s story and I just want(ed) readers to go into it with expectations I can try and live up to. *g*
Roberta Harwell - I’m so glad you like the MSW posts. Such an awesome group of ladies over there. I’m thrilled to be blogging with them.
Michelle - Thank you so much! You rock.
Raonaid Luckwell - Thank you.
Lillie - I’m glad it sounds good to you. If you try it, I hope you like it!
Sarai - The most surprising thing to me is how much of the total biblical story isn’t found in the Christian Bible. One really has to study the texts of various religions to get a “bigger” picture.
Annaliese - Thank you so much for your kind words! You rock in your own right, chica. I can’t wait to see you at RT!
[Reply]
Hey S.J. Wanted to drop by and say hi. I started Eve of Darkness yesterday and OMG - I can’t book the book down. Eve is one of my favorite heroines that I’ve read in a while.
[Reply]
I prefer not to have a HEA in each book–being guaranteed that the protagonist will find love in every single novel ruins the suspense.
[Reply]
Congratulations on the upcoming releases S.J.! I was wondering, who is your favorite character to write? Who is your most frustrating character to write?

Greetings, S.J. Thanks so much for joining us here today.
Mining the Bible and related texts for supernatural elements is a great idea — there are certainly plenty of them. What in particular inspired you to go in that direction?
I have heard wonderful things about your series, and plan to go order the first book right now!
[Reply]
Hey Sylvia!
Thanks so much for being here today. I had a chance to read Eve of Darkness, and it rocked. There was a bit of sex in it *snort*, but it really reads more like an urban fantasy. I cannot WAIT for EODestruction to come out so I can continue. I normally don’t really get into the Heavenly figures in my reading, but you have changaed my mind.
If you could have any job that wasn’t in the publishing/writing industry what would it be and why?

I enjoyed reading the interview, you can almost tell an experienced writer from an interview. Several years ago, your name came up a lot with Jordan Summers, and purchased several of your romance book, not knowing you also wrote in other genres. I read a LOT but just don’t have the time to keep up with all the many authors, so I end up missing out on some good books. Now that I know of the different genres you write in, I can pick them up at the book stores.

Hi Silvia!
Welcome to bittenbybooks.com! What an awesome interview! I LOVED Eve of Darkness and can’t wait to read Eve of Destruction!
(Thank yoU!
My question would be: if you had to choose one immortal creature to be, what would it be? And where would you choose to spend the first part of your immortality?
Thank you again!

Greta - I’m so glad you’re liking Eve! I’ve had so much fun getting to know her better. I hope you do, too.
Jackie B. - I hope the Marked books are ones you’ll like!
Bridget - Thank you!
Carol - Honestly, I was washing my hair in the shower (where I do a lot of plotting actually…) and Eve’s story came to me fully formed. I knew who she was and how much trouble Cain and Abel were going to cause her. It was really almost instantaneous. Later, when I started researching, the info I found always seemed to fall right into place. It was really a great experience writing the first three books.
And thank you for pre-ordering! I appreciate it.
Rachel - I’m really happy you enjoyed EOD! I hope you enjoy DESTRUCTION as much (or better!)
As for another job, it would probably be something to do with websites and designing them. I’m co-owner of a web hosting company and I love to play with various CMS software when I find the time.
Lisa - Thank you so much!
Holly - I hope you love Eve.
Sandy - Jordan is a really good friend of mine.
I hope you enjoy the other books you haven’t read yet. Thank you for looking for them!
Virginia - Yay! I’m happy you enjoyed EOD!
I think I’d like to be a selkie. I’d love to dart through the water like seals do. It would also allow me to visit all the tropical islands I have on my “want to see” list!

Hi SJ!
Thanks for joining us at BBB!
That was a fun interview. I hope you’ll do more interviews with Rachel in the future!
Now for my question: *^_^*
What’s your guilty pleasure?
[Reply]
Hi S.J.! I have a copy of Eve of Darkness on my TBR shelf, and would love to get my hands on Eve of Destruction as well! Do you listen to music when you write, and do you have a soundtrack for your books/or theme songs for any of your characters? Do you have a writing group or a critique partner when you write?
I have subscribed to S.J.’s mailing list. Thanks again for stopping by!
[Reply]
Hi SJ!
I’m already a fan; I love your paranomal Dream Guardian series and your historicals. I’ve been looking forward to branching out into fantasy/urban fantasy and this is the perfect opportunity since I know I’ll love series! Eve sounds kick ass! I love that in a female protaganist!
My question for you is: Are there going to be more Marked books after Eve of Darkness/Destruction/Chaos?
I’m going to pre-order Eve of Darkness now and join all these great groups. I would so love to win a copy of Eve of Destruction

Well, hello, S.J.
We met in Daytona. I’m thrilled to hear about this new series. Looks fantastic on the cover of the May RTBookreviews magazine! I’ve enjoyed many a book by you, my dear. I’d like to be stranded on a desert island with you, a pack of zombies, and a couple of very powerful shotguns. We’d have so much fun picking them off! Lyda - You know… guilty implies something secret, but I don’t really have any pleasures like that. I revel in them all openly. *g* I’m glad you liked the interview!
Kimberly B. - No, I don’t have a critique partner. It’s pretty much just me and various members of the publisher’s staff.
As for music and soundtracks, I don’t listen to music while I write. I find it distracting. But I do listen to music to get inspired to write, and there are songs that seem to fit certain scenes/characters perfectly.
In the Marked books, there are abbreviated playlists for each volume listed in the appendices, for anyone who’s interested.
Katy M. - I’m glad you’re looking forward to the series! The Marked books don’t comprise a complete trilogy, so there’s definitely room to expand and continue. Eve, Cain, and Abel are all very complicated people. There are a lot more facets to each of them to explore.
Beet - Thank you!
becca - Honestly, I have NO clue. I’m always envious of authors who can describe the exact thing that set off an idea. Mine just kinda pop up out of the ether without any clear impetus.
Thank you for the luck! I appreciate it.
DeeAnn - It could be very interesting!
Draculissa - Hey, you! Good to hear from you.
Zombies? OMG… they freak me out. (One of the reasons why I love the Resident Evil movies. *g*)
Lori C - Thank you! I hope you enjoy them.
Carol M - I was about twelve years old when I knew I wanted to be an author. I’m really living the dream. I’m grateful every day.

Hi Sylvia,
I really like the idea of pen names. Gives you an idea of the book without having to read the blurb. I also remember a friend complaining about being in an airport and just grabbing a book from an author she was familiar with. She didn’t find out until she was in the air that it was a cookbook.

I’m sorry I missed the actual interview, but you’ve definitely peaked my interest with your Eve serious. I was raised Catholic, and I’d be interested in getting the real story behind things.
Its always nice to get more perspectives on religion. You are always taught the one sided version that makes everything look good for them…if that makes sense. That’s part of the reason I enjoyed the Davinci Code. Even know its fiction, it opens your eyes to possibilities.

Valorie - Sylvia Day and S. J. Day are my real name. “Livia” was suggested by my editor because it sounds similar to “Sylvia” when spoken aloud, so if a reader was to call out “Livia” at a convention, I wouldn’t be oblivious. I picked “Dare” because it’ll sit close to “Day” on the bookshelves.
Heather - I’ve found my research into religious texts so interesting that I have been looking into formal theology classes. They would definitely come in handy as the series progresses.
Draculissa - Yes, I’ll be at RT. I leave early Tuesday morning so I’m running around trying to get everything packed and organized.
Carol M - I shook like a leaf and cried. It took a while to sink in. Unfortunately, I didn’t really do anything to celebrate. So with the Marked series, I’m having a big launch party in San Diego on May 9th. Everyone is invited!! I figure this is my chance to really launch a book right!
Karin - Thank you! I hope you enjoy them.
Gayle O - ((hugs)) I appreciate you!
blackrose - Thank you!
Patty - Thank you!
