In Twilight’s Shadow by Patti O’Shea
In this sequel to In the Midnight Hour, Patti O’Shea once again crafts a world within our own normal world. This paranormal supposes that everything is not as it seems. Demons roam the streets but thanks to the Gineals (humans with paranormal powers), ordinary humans (or outsiders) are safe.
Maia used to be a Gineal troubleshooter until she relinquished her powers. Now Creed, another troubleshooter, has shown up on her doorstep suffering from a demon attack. Maia is forced to face her past while Creed is forced to face his future.
O’Shea is a clever writer who knows how to work that edge of character growth so that it is realistic. Even when I was ready to strangle Creed for being a jerk at one point, I was so involved with his character that I had to keep reading to see if he failed as spectacularly as I thought he might. Of course, O’Shea is a master of redemption so he does not fail.
Maia also has to grow as well as let the relationship between she and her sister, Ryne, mature. They’ve been stuck in a certain phase where she continually tries to be the caretaker. It’s an interesting side journey as the two sisters learn to interact more on an adult level.
Is Creed falling to dark magic? Can Maia survive as an outsider? Will the demon who stalks both of them and Ryne be vanquished? In this powerful story of love and redemption, O’Shea will grab you by the throat refusing to let go until you have turned that very last page. In Twilight’s Shadow gets five tombstones only because we don’t hand out ten here at Bitten By Books.
Book Excerpt: “Something Wicked…
Maia Frasier thought she’d escaped the world of troubleshooters and demons when she’d ceded her magical powers years earlier. Now a wounded enforcer has turned up in her home, claiming Maia’s sister is in danger.
Creed Blackwood needs Maia’s help to hunt the demon he’s after, especially since he’s hiding the fact that his powers are becoming erratic. And then there are the blackouts…
Maia soon begins to fear Creed has fallen to the dark forces himself, and with his strong and increasingly unreliable magic, he is as dangerous to her and her sister as any demon could be.”
