Bitten by Books is excited to welcome author Earl Staggs today as our featured Guest Blogger! Earl will be talking about psychic abilities and how they have impacted your life.

****************************************************

EVERYONE’S A PSYCHIC - EVEN YOU

Like everyone else, you’ve probably had psychic experiences in your life. Tell us your story.

Most people have had psychic moments. It may have been a strong feeling or a dream that something was going to happen which did happen, knowing what other people are thinking or are going to say, suddenly thinking about someone and almost immediately getting a phone call from that person, or any number of similar experiences.

Call it ESP, clairvoyance, precognition, or whatever you choose, but let’s lump them all together here under the umbrella of psychic phenomena, and talk about it.

No, I’m no more a psychic than any other average person, but I wrote a book about one. The book is titled Memory of a Murder, and the protagonist is Adam Kingston. Adam first appeared in a short story titled “The Missing Sniper”, which holds the distinction of being published in a print magazine and an online ezine at the same time. It is still available for reading in the archives of the ezine here.

The positive reactions and feedback on the short story inspired me to take Adam Kingston into a novel. The book is basically a mystery, but Adam uses his psychic abilities to help solve crimes.

In developing the character, I modeled Adam after real-life psychics I met and talked to. For the most part, contrary to the way Hollywood likes to portray people with paranormal abilities, they are normal people leading normal lives except for their special gift. They regularly assist law enforcement agencies in solving crimes. Their gift doesn’t actually solve the crime, but can steer investigators in the right direction. Sometimes their images are so vague and enigmatic, they only puzzle and perplex. The same is true for Adam and his psychic clues, and he has to fall back on his experience as a former FBI Agent and old-fashioned police work.

So post your psychic experience here and let’s discuss it. On Monday, July 14, the most interesting experience will be chosen and, if it’s your story, you’ll receive a a signed copy of Memory of a Murder

The floor is now open and I’m anxious to hear about your psychic experiences.

Hi Earl…love your post. I truly believe in psychic experiences. Many people refer to them as your gut instincts or coincidences. Tapping into your intuition on a daily basis is key. Until recently I have tended to push them aside. One particular time that stands out in my mind is: My twin sister was in her 36th week of pregancy and while I was making breakfast on that Tuesday morning, I doubled over in pain. After getting back up I had an overwhelming feeling that something was wrong with my sister. I called her immediately…no answer. I called my parents…my father answered and told me that my brother-in-law just called to tell them that she had lost the baby. I don’t know if this is really a psychic experience or only a twin thing (we are fraternal…I understand it is even stronger with identical twins).

    Regards,
    Donna

Hi, Donna. Thanks for stopping by. I’ve heard stories similar to yours before and it is fascinating. Some call it simply the “twin thing” and some say it has to do with having similar genes. As far as I’m concerned, it a psychic connection of the first order. You and your sister may have a stronger connection than you realize. It might be interesting to do an experiment. Call your sister, hold something in your hand, concentrate on it, and see if she can guess what it is. Give it a shot. I’d love to hear how it comes out.

    Hi Earl!

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your wisdom! What an interesting post.

I can’t say that I don’t believe in psychic experiences. I trust my mom’s dreams implicitly. And those are the ones I want to share here. There are three dreams she’s had that stand out to me. One was that she kept dreaming about my dad and fire. My dad was involved in a hit and run. After that she didn’t dream. When she was pregnant with me, she dreamed she had twins. One was a boy and one was a girl. The boy twin died and she knew she was going to have a girl. The last one was about my grandfather. She dreamed of him in a casket. And the day he died, she was out shopping with my dad and she looked at the clock and said “I wonder how my dad is doing” and it was around that time that he passed.

I’ve never had any direct experiences myself, short of fortune cookie readings right before I started going out with the man who later became my husband.

    lol.

Hi Earl, I was driving home from college for a long weekend at home and I got off the Hwy for gas and just as I finished pumping the gas I had a sudden urge to take the long route home. I pushed that thought aside because the back road is very narrow, full of twisted and turns and adds about 50 minutes to the drive. I started to get back on the Hwy, but luckily I accidentally managed to take the wrong turn, rather than make a U-turn, and get on the Hwy I gave in and stayed on to the back road. I made it home; as I was getting out of my car, Mom and Dad came out of the door saying they we worried because their was a bad accident on the Hwy.

If I would have stayed on the Hwy I probably would have been right in the thick of the accident. Call it luck, fluke, precognition; or even my driving but taking the back road that day saved me, my long weekend.

In my family the women on my mother’s side often have uncanny abilities. For me, I can dream things sometimes. My most recent experience was a month ago when I had kept on dreaming the same dream in a row for 3 nights. In the dream an elderly lady walked out into traffic and was hit and killed by cars as the traffic light turned green which she had not noticed. The dream ended when some guy looked at his watch and I could read the time as 3:12 in the afternoon. So for three days I went the street intersection I recognized at 3:00 everyday to wait and watch. On the third day I saw her. The lady started into traffic just as in my dream but this time I was able to grab her and pull her back to the sidewalk in time. And do you know what she did? She hit me a few times with her umbrella for attacking her on the street. That was the thanks I got. Oh well. Just thought I’d share that.

Great post, Earl! Thanks for visiting.

I have said often (and recently) that it’s been proven that I have no psychic ability. I am a Class A worrier and I sometimes get myself really worked up over bad vibes that never pan out. My high school boyfriend lived in a town about 40 minutes away and used to visit me via city bus. One evening I freaked out when we went to catch his bus because I was certain that if he got on it, it would crash. Because I had such a strong reaction he didn’t get on the bus that night. There was no accident, everything was fine. You could say that it didn’t crash because he didn’t ride it, but I think it’s more likely that I had gotten myself worked up over nothing.

Just last week I went on a trip to CA and was really stressing before my flight, afraid that something would happen and I’d never see my family again. (I have flown over 40 times and am not usually afraid.) My trip went fine and I returned home safely.

I do believe in psychic abilities like precognition,I just think that I got the short end of the stick in that area. :-)

Hi Earl! Thanks for hanging out with us today!

There’s been odd happenings in my mother’s family for years. For me, most of my experiences happened when I was a child and in my teens. Mostly I would have premonition dreams. There weren’t about anything major, but sometimes whatever I dreamt would happen. There was the time though when I was 13. My grandmother died but I didn’t know about it yet. When I found out the time that she died, I got chills. I had been in bed (it was about 10:30 at night) and wasn’t asleep yet. I heard a beeping noise like a heart monitor and when it stopped, I saw a flash of white at the foot of my bed. My grandmother and I were close. She had 9 kids but I was referred to as the tenth child. I still believe to this day that it was her.

I’ve also had dreams about someone that has died. I lost a boyfriend when I was 18 and while some of the dreams I know were just dreams, some of them I’m absolutely positive that they were more than that.

Since I’ve grown up though, I haven’t really had many experiences like that. Occasionally, I’ll know who is on the phone before I pick it up but not much more than that.

Hi Earl, thanks for the interview. Very inetersting, but then, I have always been interested in psychic events, and people who have psychic ability. I have know 2 people that I believe have this gift. It seems to work for everyone but them!
I look forward to reading your book, Adam sounds like a very interesting character.

    Hi Earl,
How interesting all this is, I actually use a bit of psychic experiences in my last book just to give it a bit of a twist. But in real life I lost two girlfriends both in car crashes, one 10 years ago this month (22 July) the other 20 years ago, both within 100yrds of each other on the same stretch of road. I never felt anything at the time, just got that normal dreaded phone call to say there had been an accident. But weird things have happened since. My sister seems to attract psychic people and total strangers have walked up to her in the street and left messages for me, these people were (total strangers) never met them before or since and they knew nothing of me or my family or my lost girlfriends. The messages were things only I and the girls concerned knew about. I went on TV on a psychic show a few years ago, I wasn’t impressed with it and felt it was a farce; I left feeling it was a sham because nothing had happened to me. I then found a café and sat down for a meal, whilst I was sat there in walks this woman, she was the twin of my dead girlfriend looking just like her, she looked over and smiled at me and I was just shocked and stunned, I got up as I needed to go to the men’s room, when I returned she was gone.
    Thanks

Wow! I’m excited over the responses so far from Donna McDine, Virginia Hendricks, Lady Vampire, TarotByArwen, Becky, Alice Tracy, and Philip Moore. Some may not have had psychic experiences themselves, but know someone who has. This only proves my belief that nearly everyone has had them. As Adam Kingston said in a short story, “Most people have a touch of psychic ability, some of us more than others.” Keep the stories coming. On Monday, we’ll select the most interesting experience, and that person will receive a signed copy of MEMORY OF A MURDER. Remember also, if you want to read Chapter One and see how Adam uses his gift, drop me a note at earlstaggs@sbcglobal.net

    Hi,

Not sure if this fits, might be more a visitation. I’m 45 and my grandfather died when I was 18. Yes, we were very close. This happened in my early 20s at work.

I was a receptionist for an insurance company and my desk was located away from everyone else…they were through another set of doors that were always open. The nearest smoker was on the other side of the floor…never could smell his cigs.

We were the only office on this floor and I had direct viewing of elevators, exit doors and paths to washrooms. NO ONE had passed by me in the last hour when I smelled my Pa’s pipe tobacco.

I immediately felt his presence on the top back of my right shoulder…can feel the pressure right now as I type this. I knew instantly that he was there behind me. No doubts. I never turned around but felt extremely calm and reassured that he was right there.

Have thought I could smell the pipe following that time, but never quite sure. Always when rememberting that day, I immediately feel the pressure on my back right shoulder.

Now for my 6 year-old…how does she know when I’m thinking of moving toys she doesn’t play with??? Without ever saying anything out loud, I will think about rearranging or moving to basement a certain set of toys…those she hasn’t played with in months. Very next day, if not the next hour, she’ll be playing with those same toys. Not one word spoken by me, no looking at toys, she just starts playing as if she read my mind.

    Keep writing Earl.

I dream of things that come true quite a lot. I’ve dreamt about my father having a stroke and days later, he ended up in the hospital with both a heart attack and stroke.
I dreamt one of my nieces had a baby. One baby and it was a boy. In the dream my entire family had gathered for a special occasion. My oldest sister was holding her very first grandson and her daughter/my niece, was beside her. I could feel the happiness my sister was feeling in regards to her new grandson, but I also felt the sorrow my niece was feeling. I couldn’t understand it at the time. In reality, when she found out she was pregnant, she learned it was twins. Five months into her pregnancy, one of the twins died. Six months after her son was born, my entire family gathered for my parent’s 50th anniversary.

Another dream I had was a particularly sad one for me and woke me in tears. I dreamt my two sons were playing outside and my youngest son who was eight at the time, ran out onto the street. It suddenly changed from a street to a highway and I watched as my son was struck by a vehicle and killed. The dream became fuzzy at that time and it was both me holding my son and sobbing, and not me. It was someone else but I just couldn’t see her face.
Two day’s later, my children were playing outside and their ball rolled onto the road. I stopped my son from running out and getting it and the dream I had came to me so brightly then. It wasn’t my son who would die but someone else close to me. An hour later I got a call from my mother. My ten year old nephew had been struck by a van on the highway as he crossed and was killed instantly. My son and my nephew could have been brother, their resemblance was so strong. It was then I understood the dream.

I have accurately predicted several births in the family simply because I dreamt of what they were before the announcement of pregnancy was even made. These are only a few things I’ve predicted in my dreams. I’ve written a story of a woman with physic dreams but I’ve never submitted it for publishing. I strongly believe people have the ability to see things before they happen.

AND THE WINNER IS. . .

But first, please forgive me for not posting this sooner. Our youngest daughter had what was supposed to be simple surgery, but it turned out to be more serious than expected. My wife and I spent the best part of the last three days at the hospital. The good news is, she’s home now and all is well.

But getting back to the winner. . .

The choice was not easy. All the stories were fascinating, and my thanks to everyone who participated. You’ve reinforced my philosophy that nearly everyone has had psychic experiences in their lives, some more than others. Somewhere in the organ we call a brain, there are powers beyond what we can imagine. Someday, perhaps, we will learn to harness and use those powers much, much more that we’re able to today.

FINALLY, the winner is: VAMPIRE LADY.

She told of having a dream in which she saw an elderly woman step in front of a speeding car. She went to the site for three days and on that third day, she saved the woman’s life. For reacting to her dreams and going beyond what most people would, she saved a life. For her trouble, she received a few whacks from the old lady’s umbrella. What a terrific story!

    Congratulations, Vampire Lady!

As soon as I receive your name and address, I’ll send a signed copy of MEMORY OF A MURDER your way.

My offer still stands, by the way. If anyone would like to read Chapter One of the book and see how Adam Kingston uses his special gift, I’ll be happy to send it to you via email. Write me at: earlstaggs@sbcglobal.net

And a big Thank You to Rachel for inviting me here and to everyone who joined in. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

    Best regards to all.
