Phantom Lovers: Shadowkeeper by Debra Glass
Shadowkeeper picks up a year after the events of Gatekeeper with Amy Drew moving to Alabama to stay with her stepbrother as she continues to recover from her abduction. Amy, who has lost her abilities, her sense of purpose, and confidence in herself, tries to make a new life for herself without psychic abilities, and it’s not an easy adjustment. Her decision to turn her back on all things psychic after nearly a year without being able to use her gifts is tested when, out of the blue, she starts to pick up on psychic impressions, images, and feelings moments upon arriving at Belle Ruisseau, an historic mansion that her stepbrother, Reed, is restoring.
Irrevocably changed by her abduction and premature burial, Amy is broken, afraid, and, for the first time ever, lost and unsatisfied with her life. She has become a completely different person, unable to see the good in life, like love, purpose, passion, connection, and helping others. She doesn’t listen to her own intuition simply because she no longer trusts or has confidence in herself. In essence, she doesn’t know who she is or believe that she matters if she is not psychic. But when she starts experiencing memories and feelings from a life that she doesn’t remember living and an intense and familiar connection/attraction to the spirit of William Ryan, her innate strength, courage, and confidence resurfaces to help her solve the mystery tying her to the Belle Ruisseau and William.
William is the son of a wealthy white landowner and a Cherokee princess. During his life, he was a talented, well-known, and respected artist who was accepted among people in the area despite his mixed racial heritage. He’s a passionate and strong but gentle man with a hidden agenda, harboring dark secrets. Through her relationship with William, Amy not only discovers passion, connection, and a sense of belonging , she also begins to reconnect with her own inner strength and find the strength to do more than exist—to live a full life.
I started reading, excited to see how Amy’s story would unfold, and once I did, I had to make myself stop. The chemistry between Amy and William is emotionally intense and hot. Glass does an awesome job of capturing Amy’s sense of loss and disenchantment with being a psychic who has lost the ability to see with more than just her eyes. When the novel begins, Amy has completely lost touch with herself and a huge part of her identity. As she struggles to regain confidence and acceptance of herself, whether her gifts return or not, she also learns how to trust other people again. I’m giving Shadowkeeper 4 Tombstones out of 5 because Glass continues the second book in the series with a lot of great description, suspense, and unexpected surprises.
