Crux by Moira Rogers
Mackenzie Brooks has reached the end of her rope. After fleeing a stalker who spoke of crazy things, like it being her destiny to have his cougar babies, she is desperate to find safety and elude the thugs that seem unshakable. When that potential safety arrives in the form of a man who might prove Marcus’s stories of shapeshifters and magic true, will she be able to extend the hand of friendship and let go of her fear?
The first story in the Southern Arcana series by Moira Rogers, Crux is a good start to what is sure to be a great series. This is the longest Moira Rogers story I’ve read so far (I think. What? I’ve read a lot of them and my memory can’t be perfect all the time *grin*) and while the progression was a little sluggish at parts, I enjoyed getting a good feel for the secondary characters and their dynamics. They are an awesome collected “family” and I can’t wait to see where they go in the future.
The tension buildup between Jackson and Mackenzie on their trip was very well done (can we say intense?), and while I was impressed with their focus on the bad guys at hand, the final culmination of that tension was a bit anticlimactic. I was greatly intrigued by the shapeshifters’ race and class issues; it added a good deal of realism to a magical culture that I get the feeling we’ve only just started to understand. All in all, not Moira Rogers’ strongest story, but definitely the start of something that could quite possible prove to be fantastic.

Cougar babies!? That poor woman.
I am always disappointed when an ending doesn’t live up to the way the book progresses. Still, it sounds like a very good book to read.

I’m about half way through the book now, and its wonderful I really like how the tension is building.

This book looks great. I know the review said the start can be sluggish but that kind of start is often the precursor to a really good book, especially when the book is the start of a new series.
I really hope to be able to get it.

As I do not have any king of e-book reader that I know of - there might be one lurking on my phone - but no way could I read an entire book on THAT screen. However, I am intrigued by the plot and the characters. I would really like to see how they develop. So this is going on my TBR wishlist! (until I can figure out a way to read it that is) All the best on your publishing success Moira.

I just bought Crux, and I hope it’s as good as it sounds. I can’t wait to get started!

I don’t believe I have ever read a book like this. The storyline seems a little bit different from what I usually read. Fleeing stalkers, shapeshifters, and magic, it sounds interesting I might give it a try.

I am always a bit scared to start a new sereis in case I get addicted.
But this looks really interesting. I love reading about magic and shifters. The most important thing to me is that the author makes rules for her universe, and STICKS to them!

This is an intriguing premise - I think I’d run away from someone who wanted me to have their cougar babies, too! I like how you warned that it’s sluggish in parts because that always throws me when I’m reading something and all of a sudden, it gets slow. Hopefully, with fair warning, I will be able to get beyond it to the end. Let’s just hope this isn’t so of all the books.

Yeh, another series to get hooked on! Thanks, Bree & Donna! My wishlist knows no bounds. I don’t mind a slow start on a series. Sometimes it’s needed to lay all the groundwork for what is to come. With shapeshfters from this writing team, I can’t wait to get started.

This sounds like a great read, exactly the type of paranormal that I enjoy piling up to read. I, however, want a book that I can hold in my hands. I know, I know, get with the program, but until I can convince myself to fork over that money for an e-reader, I just can’t get into a book that I can’t hold. The whole point of reading is to visit places that I’ll never see, meet people( and creatures) that aren’t real, and experience the unexperienced. This just doesn’t happen for me while sitting here reading on the computer. I’m always aware that I am reading it and not experiencing it. But, I think I will give this series a chance and see if this storyline can change my mind. That’s a big responsibility. Let’s see if if this series can make me take the plunge.

Just downloaded a copy of this and I am really looking forward to reading it.
Thanks for the review!

Very iteresting premise. I actually like when the first book in a series starts slow and fills the reader in on the backstory to her world, it’s rules, the races involved and how they interact and gives a good background to the secondary characters. Often secondary characters make or break a story for me. I want them well written and full bodied, not just a prop for the main character. This book sounds like it delivers, can’t wait to read!

I’m especially interested after reading that this book actually gives a real quality to the megical aspects of the story. So many stories just want you to suspend your idea of reality and just accept what they tell you so to have a book that may actually have you think, “Oh that makes sense,” will always get my attention. It looks like it’s atleast worth a shot.

Hmmm, I have to agree, cougar babies, poor woman. >:) But as I just bought the book, I really hope that it is as good as the excerpt makes it sound!

If some guy said I was destined to have his cougar babies, I’d laugh my butt off at him, but at the same time it would certainly get my attention too, LOL!

I love a book with untold adventure and love in the air. Mackenzie’s on the run from a stalker and has to rely on a gorgeous PI named Jackson. Who doesn’t want to be saved by a handsome guy? Prophecies told, dreams and nightmares that come true, and of course, let’s not forget, love and danger. This book sounds intriguing and that it has the potential to be more in the long run. The Crux is a book I may have to read and start another series with.

I don’t know this author, but I think this story is the way to begin. I enjoy stories about shifters. I’m happy to see it is available as an ebook.

I hope the stalker gets his appropriate ending. “Have my cougar babies?” Ew…

Okay, I gave in an got this ebook because it sounds like one I would really, really like, even though I like to pile up on the couch next to the wood stove and really relax when I read. Well, let me tell you, I am now on page 163, about to start chapter 11, and this book(despite the fact that I can’t hold it in my hands and lay back on the couch on a big puffy pillow) is great. My ass is numb from sitting at the desk so long but I have hardy noticed it. Now I’m going to have to read the rest of this series. I don’t see where this has a slow start at all. Great writing! It has had me glued to my seat. Well, off to read more!!!

I’m really excited to read this book on my Kindle. I’ve never really read a lot of books in my life, but it’s been great finding new books to read. I have a few friends who are familiar with this author, and it’s about time I can also enjoy her stories!

Okay, I’ve had enough of the cougar babies. I don’t care if the ending includes Borat doing the Can-Can, now I have to read this book.
And an intensity to boot? You can resist that?

Moira, I really want to indulge in your Last Call series after reading the reviews and Crux will be wonderful!!! Cougar Babies LOL and a bar that caters to the supernatural beings and what other magical practitioners. I have joined your yahoo group and already have bitten by books as a perma link to my facebook page but have also added the link to this awesome contest.
I really liked how you are involving the other authors in your contest by having everyone visit their interviews too. The Diane Whiteside has been visited and I will be sure to visit with Mario tomorrow, his series made me laugh.
I am off to review the yahoo group now!! Thanks Shell the Hockeyvampiress

Crux sounds great and I didn’t know it was a series. I love series.

This book sounds great! I love the paranormal - always so much more exciting than “the normal”, lol. I agree that a slow start is sometimes needed to lay the groundwork of a story. Besides, if you start out hopping, everything is over much too soon.
A new series like this is just what I’ve been lookng for! Can’t wait!

I’m surprised this wasn’t felt as one of Moira Rogers’ strongest books - I think of all the blurbs I’ve read about the books, this one sounds the most interesting. I’ve read all of the freebie stories, which were all great. I think the excerpts I’ve read have really got me excited over the book and I can’t wait to read it.

I just purchased this book so I was hoping that the review would not have any spoilers. Eeek! I think we are okay and I really enjoyed the review. This book sounds great and I cannot wait to read it. I mean, shapeshifters, a stalker, and all kinds of hotness…who could ask for more?
[Reply]
I’ve been wanting to try reading some shapeshifter style romances for a while. Judging by the reviews of this story, along with reviews for this author in general, this sounds like an excellent story to add to the TBR wishlist as an introduction to this subgenre.

Crazy man talking about cougar babies…yup you had me at hello
I really liked that, funny how one sentence can make you wanna read a book

Very nice overview of the book, Sarai. I, too, am intrigued by the “shapeshifter race and class issues.” In addition to just being fun, paranormal fiction can also be meaningful when it addresses topical concerns.

I think tension between the hero and heroine often leads to a page turning story. I like the sound of this one. Oh, and the product warning posted under the book blurb….it makes me want to read it more. lol

Cougar babies? Well, I do like shapeshifters but I am not clear what this book’s world has to offer that is different than all the other books out there. But it is good to hear that the secondary characters are developed which leads me to believe that there is good interpersonal interaction between characters. This usually makes a better read. Perhaps I will give this a try.
