Interview with Author Diane Whiteside

A big welcome to our readers today! Be sure to read to the end of the interview to find out how to WIN the fabulous prizes being offered up. The contest runs until 3:00 pm Eastern time tomorrow 3/4/09. Open to readers worldwide!

NOTE: this is not a fixed time event, the post just goes live at 8:00 am PST. You can stop by any time during the day or evening and leave your questions and comments.

Interview:

Hi Diane!

Welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!

I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been very interesting to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a writer! Readers, if you haven’t done so already please stop by and get your copy of Diane’s latest release in the Texas Vampire series, Bond of Darkness.

BBB: What do you find the most challenging aspect of writing?

DW: I’d love to have more time to do it. Heck, I even like looking up the finer points of grammar (like when and how to use commas) at midnight. I’d simply rather do that sort of thing in daylight.

BBB: What is the most rewarding aspect of writing for you?

DW: Originally, writing was all about saving my sanity. I had to get the characters’ voices out of my head and into a book, where the characters could live. Now it’s just as much about meeting and talking with readers.

BBB: I have to say that you can write a love scene that absolutely smolders. Where do you get your inspiration?

DW: Thank you! I believe in always putting all of a character’s emotion down on the page; for a love scene, that usually means making it pretty darn steamy. The characters who inspire the hottest love scenes often start with somebody I glimpsed in real life, like two lovers holding hands in a café who were absolutely oblivious to the world around them. If I can capture just a little of their passion in my writing, then I think I’ve had a good day.

BBB: What do you feel are the benefits of the new electronic readers such as the Kindle 2 or Sony Digital Book Reader to the environment?

DW: Obviously, using less paper (and cutting down fewer trees) is A Good Thing! Having a lot of books or an entire library on an electronic reader also provides a ton of choices, which is wonderful. Heck, there’s nothing like having an entire author’s backlist in one, oh-so-small spot. In fact, I currently have about forty books on my PDA, on which I’ve been reading e-books for about eight years.

But I also believe it’s wonderful for people to obtain reading materials more easily (ooh, on the fly or from the Web!) and have them handy wherever they go. People have always been able to read books, magazines, newspapers, etc. while they were riding the bus or waiting to see the doctor. But being to buy a new book at 2 a.m. or while riding the subway? Or grab a magazine with an in-depth article about the latest news headline, while you’re listening to a talking head discuss it? That’s new and important. I believe electronic readers will eventually build a larger group of readers.

BBB: What impact do electronic readers create on the bottom line for authors in the end? Do you feel they have a negative impact or positive, or no impact at all that you can see?

DW: In the long run, I believe electronic readers will eventually have a positive impact on the bottom line for authors, because they’ll build the market. (Yup, I’m talking about eventually with a capital “E”.)

But in the short-term? Right now, electronic readers’ impact is tied up in a web of individual retailers (since some readers really bond their purchaser to a single retailer), copy protection schemes, publishers’ contracts involving all of the above, and authors’ contracts with their publishers (which have really bizarre phrasing about what constitutes a “format” and how much to pay an author for each format). And let’s not even get started on the copyright laws’ definition of what is or is not a digital edition, especially because that depends on the location of author/publisher/retailer. (And just try defining “location” in an Internet world! Hah!)

And if you want to really have fun, we can delve into the potential of something like the Espresso Machine for also changing things. Or maybe not.

So in the short-term, everything looks amazingly chaotic to me because the entire business model needs to be rethought for the new technology. Me, I try to keep my head down and my geeky instincts alert to filter what I hear through what I know of the technology.

BBB: If the Texas Vampire books were ever made into a movie, who would some of your dream cast be?

DW: Eric Bana for Don Rafael. Big, tough, implacable, and yet very sexy. (Don Rafael was originally inspired by Kevin Smith, who played Ares in Xena, but he’s no longer with us.)

Hugh Jackman as Jean-Marie. Period. Uh, well, who else? Can you imagine him as that master spy and assassin? And then the motorcycle scene? <swoon>

My friends want Brad Pitt as Ethan. He had the right amount of stunning good looks when he was younger but he only recently attained the leadership of men qualities recently, IMHO.

Kate Beckinsale as Grania. But somebody else would have to play Blanche, since Don Rafael really thinks they look nothing alike.

Charlize Theron as Hélène.

Eva Mendes as Steve, I think. (Nia Peebles’ portrayal of Sydney Cooke on Walker, Texas Ranger helped a lot with her, too.)

BBB: Since your Texas Vampire series takes place all over the spectrum, time and location-wise, how do you keep your world building all straight?

DW: Well, I gave up on using binders really early on! I kept filling them up too fast and then rearranging stuff.

I have a giga-normous timeline of everything that happens, starting in medieval Spain. It’s split into four columns: one for date and world events (Ferdinand and Isabella take over Spain, Valley Forge, Prohibition, etc.), plus three more which are basically one for each hero’s book. If an event is covered in more than one book, then I “merged” cells and spread the event’s description over all the relevant books.

There’s a file folder for each hero, heroine, and villain, including the heroes who haven’t yet had their own story. It includes whatever I know about them, like a picture, notes on their backstory, special skills, favorite toys, etc.

A separate file folder for each location, whether real or imaginary. Austin, Houston, medieval Toledo, 1812 Spain (oh, the fun in finding good maps!), and so on. They also have pictures, notes, and maps. If I set anything critical to the plot in a location, I try to drop a note about it into the location’s folder.

A file folder for each language used. It’s very, very hard to recreate that research; much easier to recreate research for a location.

There’s also an enormous folder about vampiro science, including the logic behind it. Every aspect was formally developed with scientists and I’m not about to go through that process again.

BBB: Can you tell us what your next release(s) will be? Do you have any more books planned for the Texas Vampires? And do you have standalone titles forthcoming?

DW: Captive Desires, the sequel to Captive Dreams, will be published this fall. It’s about a fan-fic author who’s confronted at a sci-fi convention by her stories’ hero (in person!). She’s been saving his life for years. But in order to protect his world, he must either stop her from using all magic (which includes writing) – or kill her.

I have a standalone short story about my Texas Vampires in the Second Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance, which comes out next year (I think).

I’ve also submitted a novel to my publisher about how Ethan met Don Rafael and grew from being a horse thief under sentence of death to an alferez mayor, Don Rafael’s military commander. Fingers crossed it will be published one day!

On the non-paranormal front, The Southern Devil, a historical about a hunt for buried treasure in the high Rockies, will be re-issued next month. THE ARIZONA DEVIL will be published next year. It’s about fending off a world war in late nineteenth century Istanbul.

BBB: How do you dream up your characters and are they inspired by anyone famous?

DW: My characters swoop in from all sorts of places! A glimpse on the Metro, a fragment in a reference book’s footnote, a snarky comment by a friend… (Hey, those character voices crowd in from anywhere!) But nobody famous has inspired me so far. That’s definitely a never say never, though.

BBB: What is your all time favorite paranormal/urban fantasy book?

DW: Just one? You wretch, what a terrible field to narrow down! Do you know how many books I own?

If I had to pick only one paranormal/urban fantasy book, It would have to be SON OF THE MORNING by Linda Howard. I reread that book at least once every year. (Which reminds me, I should probably buy a new copy. Hmm…)

If a book’s very important to me, I have both electronic and paper copies. Electronic, so I can have it with me at all times, and paper, so I’ll always have it no matter what weird gremlins get into my PDA. (Do you know how many times I’ve had to reload my entire library from backup? Yuck. Of course, I have been reading ebooks for years so I probably haven’t had to reload that often.) The other advantage to paper is that I can have the joy of randomly opening a much-beloved and reading whatever I find. But there are very, very few books I do that with.

BBB: What did you do before you became a writer? Do you write full time?

DW: I’m lucky enough to work full time and write part time. (If you call writing two – or more – books every year part time…) So I manage and design computers as my official day job and write books by night.

BBB: What do you like to do in between all the time you spend writing?

DW: I’d love to spend more time with my family, dogs and garden. To say nothing of reading more books for pleasure…

BBB: I read that you enjoy dressmaking. What types of dresses do you make?

DW: Historical costumes, mostly from the Regency era. I like the clothes (lots of luscious fabrics but the skirts don’t go on forever and the corsets are only for the very accurate-minded, which makes life much more comfortable) and the dances are great fun. We can always catch our breath by talking about the literature (Jane Austen! Georgette Heyer! Patrick O’Brian and C.S. Forester!) or heading over to some serious history buffs. Definitely fun times associated with those clothes.

BBB: What is your favorite quote of all time?

DW: I rotate quotes on display in my office every few months so there are a lot to choose from. How about a long-time favorite?

“Problems are the price we pay for progress.” – Branch Rickey, Brooklyn Dodgers general manager. He managed the baseball team which broke the color barrier in major league sports in 1947.

Hi, Patricia! Hugs to you for good thoughts about BOND OF DARKNESS!

Cindy - I really enjoyed medieval Spain. It struck me as a wild cross between frontier New England medieval Scotland (if that makes any sense). I’d love to spend more time writing about it, just because I had so much fun.

Thanks, Anne! CAPTIVE DESIRES was a huge thrill to write and I hope you enjoy it, too!

Y’know, Beet, Don Rafael from my Texas vamps actually inspired CAPTIVE DREAMS. My friend asked me what I’d do if he came at me in real life - run toward him or away from him? Knowing he’s the greatest lover in the world (because it’s how he stays alive & he’s had 700 years to practice) or that I had him tortured him in a dungeon for 200 years, I don’t know what I’d do. And I’m not sure what he’d do either, except I’d probably enjoy the results. LOL

Qwill - seven of my Texas vamps have given me some glimmer of their story. I’d really like to get BLOOD APPRENTICE (the one about how Ethan became a vamp) into print somehow, though.

Becca - my characters are usually based on idea fragments, not on people I know. It’s easier for me not to get confused between the real life and the fictional versions that way.

Yo, draculissa! Thought I recognised you. :-) Thanks for inviting your friends!

Virginia, a really good friend got me started on the dressmaking. We had some great times together, too!

Oh, Linda, I adored Smith as Ares. I still go back and watch him in some of the episodes to get a fix on Don Rafael.

Glad you dropped by, Carol and Joye!

Lisa, I’ve got a secret hankering to write pure romantic suspense. BOND OF DARKNESS is pretty close. (Hey, there’s a thriller hidden under there, too.) But a story hasn’t waltzed into my head yet.

Wow, Ashley, you’re incredible! Thank you!

MarnieColette - I’d go shoe shopping in a moment with Helene, my French fashionista heroine. On the other hand, Jean Marie would be cool to go shopping with, too, because he really appreciates the details behind a girl looking good. But Don Rafael would think of a way to “sex up” shoe shopping…

Hi, Jackie! People have read my vamp books on their own and enjoyed them. But you might find it easier to read them in sequence.

Oh, Sue, I’d love to have a Sony e-Reader! Happy reading and hope you enjoy my books!

    Dear Diane,

I recently read Captive Dreams. I believe it was my first story by you, so I am a new fan. Smiles. In your newsletter I learned about Captive Desires, the sequel to Captive Dreams. I am real excited about that. I loved both of the sisters and the men they ended up with.

It is so great to get to know you better by this interview. I was surprised that we have one thing in common when it comes to writing. Laughs. You use file folders for all your worlds and character details while I use portfolio’s with 12 or 13 pockets which hold each one of my stories (writing is a hobby of mine). All research goes into a pocket which includes, pictures, room designs, maps, phrases, words, random story scenes, etc. Grins. I thought I was the only one this neurotic. It is so good to see that i am not alone. =0p

Ques 1: Will your characters from Captive Dreams be seen in Captive Desires?

Ques 2: Is the new writer in Captive Desires a friend or relation to the two sisters in your previous story?

Thanks so much for being here.

The new Captive book sounds intriguing. I’ve never written fan-fic, but as a kid, I constantly fantasized about my favorite characters coming to life. At the time, those favorite characters were the Black Stallion, Black Beauty and King of the Wind :) Ah, but the adventures we’d have… But considering the hell a writer puts her characters through, she should probably be very worried if her characters come to have words with her :)

I love that writing saved your sanity. :) What is your best environment for writing? (Do you need quiet or do you listen to music? That sort of thing.)

In my writing life, I have to balance the solitude with social, or I find myself going a little crazy in the opposite direction! :)

I love the Texas Vampire series. I can’t wait to read Bond of Darkness.

How long does it normally take you to write a book in this series?

Marina, all of my Captive Dreams characters will be seen in Captive Desires. (Hehehehe…) No, my heroine is not a friend or relation of Corinne or Celeste.

cherylk, I read all over the spectrum! No one favorite author, although I devour Tolkien, Howard, Lowell, Knight…

Thanks, Valerie! I’m really amazed by how clearly I can see my Texas vamps. It’s a lot harder to see most of my Devils, possibly because there haven’t as many westerns made recently. Although there is Christian Bale…

Lexee, I’ll write any subject my characters want me to. It’s easier to save my sanity that way. LOL

Oh heavens, Jessa, do you know how many authors have said exactly that to me?

Alana, I like music around when I’m writing, usually instrumental so I won’t be distracted by the lyrics. But I ALWAYS know what kind of music my hero and heroine like to listen to. So I’ve got albums of stuff like Civil War pop tunes and early ragtime songs for my Devils, plus medieval love songs.

    Hi Diane,

I have read all your books (and reviewed them for BBB (>:) so no need to enter me in the contest. I just had to tell you that you write the hottest love scenes that I have ever read. My husband thanks you……LOL.

Diane, while my mind tries to recover from the enormity of your planning for your vampire series (you gave up on binders because they filled up too easily?! head hurting from that one!), I just have to tell you that I think the story about the fanfic author who is visited by the hero at the convention is such a wonderfully unique premise! I will be on the lookout for it.

    Dear Diane,

That is so great. Now I am more excited then ever to read Captive Desires since I’ll get to visit with characters from Captive Dreams. Once again thank you so much for being here.

Rachel thanks for hosting this interview.

What a great interview. I’ve always wondered about how hard it is to keep the timeline and all the details from previous books straight. Thanks so much for sharing with us!

Yo, Lori, many hugs to you - and your DH! LOL

Gosh, Margay, I had such fun with CAPTIVE DESIRES. Just wait till you read where he has to sit through the panel discussion on his sex life…

Bestest to you, Marina! I too enjoyed catching up on Alekhsiy and Corinne and Mykhayl and Khyber and Svethlana.

Thanks, Kristi! I admit to being obsessive about research - but it also gives me ideas for new books so what the heck.

Tina b - Thanks for the compliment! Nope, no ideas for books about villains at the moment. Although I would like to write something about the dude in SOUTHERN DEVIL that Jessamyn hired as a boy toy but Morgan threw out.

    Hello Diane,
What a great interview. It is nice to hear you say you started to write for sanity. It’s true that for some, it seems the only way to get those voices out of our heads :)

Interviews are nice because they give the readers a chance to learn a little more about what drives the author to write a certain type/timeframe/ genre of story. It is surprising sometimes that some things get through the final edit, often something quite small, such as using the wrong name for a character. In one case, in a book that shall be nameless, the hero changed names entirely in the middle of the book–and it wasn’t meant to be as part of the story! I am glad you work hard on the research, since something that is glaringly wrong historically can pretty well ruin an otherwise good book!

I have to laugh about your comment about the voices in your head. I read constantly if not working or sleeping or doing housework. I find that I can be sitting there without a book and see the words in front of my eyes and realize they are not what I have read but my own story trying to get out. This really makes me crazy sometimes but I have yet to put the words down because I read so many wonderful authors and think that I can not compare so they stay in my head frustrating me. I have added your link to the contest to my facebook page and will be checking out some of your books in the reviews pages. Thanks Shell

She haunts me. She stalks me. She follows me from website to website under the guise of friendship. Draculissa doesn’t think I know who she is, and I have to admit that she has now and again thrown me off guard because of her abililty to wander day or night; she has reached that pinnacle of vampirism in which she is no longer subjected to the usual, night-in-a-box vampiress - No. Not Draculissa.
And so I wait - I wait - I don’t want to be brought into her world - do I?
    Draculissa - Temptress - Begone!

Ahhhh, Linda, we meet again. Come to me. Closer. Closer, please. Let me welcome you with open arms into my world. Eternal life. Eternal love. Temptation is sweet, Linda. Should you run again I will find you. I will shatter your defenses and make you mine!

And so Draculissa finds me again - or did I find her? Who seeks whom? I cannot ask myself these questions - I fear the answers.
    I run again!

Don’t run, Linda. It is pointless. I have you in my grasp. Think of all the wonderful things we can do. I will teach you to feast! We will fly to places you’ve never been. I admit it is a solitary life but you will live forever! PS. Bring something to read. Something by author, Diane Whiteside.
